The aisles are a pain in the butt and it's always super crowded because it's in downtown Millbrae in the perfect location. There's a bus stop on the side and parking isn't impossible... it's lot is also very narrow and traffic coming in from el camino does not help one bit. For a safeway, they don't sell a lot of things like someone mentioned.. scratchers for one and not even a red box (gasp!). The people at the cash register are rude and incompetent and the only reason I come to this place is if I'm in a rush to get something or Lucky's a couple minutes away does not have what I am looking for. Gave them a three star mainly because of their prices, it can always be lower! Store is the largest grocery in the area..It has most everything and every dept you may want. Aisles are wide and clean, shelves are usually stocked. There are usually lots of carts and baskets, but there is the occasional time there are no carts so you have to take a basket. This visit I entered the store into the produce/flower depts with really high ceilings that make it seem very large. I was thankful for the a/c since we are experiencing very hot weather. I came for a few items and ended up with lots more, plus a Starbucks drink. I did need directions to find items and found a very helpful employee who directed me to them. Checkout was about average. I was number 3 and there were some problems with the people in front but the cashier knew what she was doing and the line kept getting shorter, and I was done Overall this Safeway is the best grocery in the area and carries lots of assorted foods and other items. I do recommend it especially on Fridays when they have their $5.00 sales. You can really get a good price on those items selling on that particular friday read more

This is perhaps THE worst Safeway in the Company! I have been there numerous times... 90% of those times has been a negative experience. Today's visit was the reason I will NEVER go to this Safeway again. After I had made my purchase, I proceeded to go the Starbucks kiosk they have inside the store. I have been here several times and have always been so graciously served by a Barista named Ben. Unfortunately, he was not there today. They had one Barista behind the counter who was having difficulty closing out a transaction at the POS. In front of me, was a woman (who works there, as I have seen her before.. I believe she is a Supervisor or ?) Anyways, she saw the Barista having difficulty, but took about 10 minutes to go behind the Counter to help her. At this point, there was another Customer behind me. I could tell he was getting frustrated as well. There was no " I'll be right with you or I apologize for the wait". After another 2 minutes, the other customer left. As I was standing there at the Counter, I asked the "Supervisor" why it was taking so long. To which she replied "he has a big Order" ??? She then came behind the counter and I said to her "you are going to lose customers" to which she sarcastically replied "no, he's a customer" (the person who had the large order). I then says "the customer behind me left" to which she rudely said "Excuse me??" I repeated what I had said and she replied "ohhh and shrugged her shoulders and walked away". There is never enough help here. I have gone more than once and found cashiers arguing with each other about break time because they are strapped for help and not enough people to cover for them. The lines get especially long and it is frustrating, because you know Safeway is a company who can afford to hire more help. The store looks decent, but the aisles are super narrow, which may be part of the reason people seem to always be bumping into one another and dodging oncoming cart traffic. I go there out of convenience passing on the way home, but I actually try to avoid going there if I can. read more

If you're craving excellent gelato and sorbet did you ever think Safeway would come time mind? Visit this new Safeway if you don't believe me and try the pistachio or mint chip. They've shut down the old market at this location and built an enormous, 21st century Safeway - Whole Foods hybrid. The layout is lovely and spacious, and the building itself, offset at an angle, is a great improvement to the old Safeway. They still don't have quite the broad selection of natural products Whole Foods has, but it's a good combo. Once they tear down the old Safeway there will be more parking. The prepared foods are the highlight of this new store. There's a bakery oven, nut and make your own peanut butter station, a full sushi bar with very reasonably priced sushi prepared on the spot, lots of deli and other food like chinese. The employees seem very proud of this new accomplishment which is a nice environment to shop in. Some things are still much less at Trader Joe's but for an overall supermarket I would definitely come to this Safeway. There were even teenage kids raving and offering their parents to shop, at the grand opening. read more

6.5 pounds of ground beef on a styrofoam tray, its plastic wrap ruptured, bagged in a produce bag to avoid nasty spills and contamination. They saw this and grabbed the produce bag by its edge to avoid soiling their snowflake hands. They then placed the ruptured tray, open end of the bag first into the plastic grocery bag, perpendicular to plane in which a tray of meat should be transported. The grocery bag became engorged with blood, a mess, a damn bloody mess. Next, the 16oz clamshell of super greens, then the loose garlic, then the loose tomato, and finally the mushrooms. I didn't catch the lad's name, but they had bleached streaks running through their medium-length hair. They never said a word, they never skipped a beat, they handed me my blood filed grocery bag and sent me on my way. A dirtbag that one, a certified dirtbag. read more

There are often long lines at the store. If you're in a hurry don't go here. They have plenty of registers but they only put about half the people at them. There are very few people around to help you find things. Generally the store is understaffed and don't expect any help from anyone. I would suggest Trader Joe's they always open registers. The reason I'm writing this review today as I actually had to leave the Safeway store because I didn't have time to wait. Very important: this location is not 24/7. As a new mom, I'm up all hours of the day and night, which means I'm often wide awake and ready to run errands at odd times. Cue this morning: finished a feeding around 3:30 a.m. and thought I'd check to see if any grocery stores were open. Saw this Yelp page and drove on over, only to find all the doors locked. If anyone was watching the security cams I'm sure they had a good laugh as I stupidly walked to several entrances, puzzled as each door failed to open. And yes, I know I should have double checked the hours on Safeway's actual website. Consider that a partial fail on my part. I submitted an update request to the Yelp gods; hopefully they change the hours soon, so no one else has to be fooled by this page's erroneous details. Also note the reason for the two star review is due to their customer service, or lack thereof. I've found the checkers to be surly and the baggers incompetent. Not a friendly face in sight, except for the very sweet older lady at the Starbucks inside. I don't need their employees to be overly chatty. But a "hello" would be nice. Or perhaps a "thanks and have a nice day" when I'm handed the receipt. I worked at Albertsons in college as both a bagger and checker, so I know how the job works. I always put my groceries on the conveyer belt in the order they should be bagged, and I've yet to have one of their employees take advantage of that. Instead, they push all the items through and wait till the end to put them away. This means the fragile items are often thrown in under heavy stuff. Hot Foods Section Review I'm pretty disappointed in their hot foods department. I usually come here after a workout at 24 and get their combo, it used to be $5 or $6 for 1 entree and 2 sides. I came in here early this morning ~ 9 AM hoping to get a good breakfast in and asked for the combo. They raised their price to $7 which is okay, but when I asked for wings as my entree, the lady who was in charge told the new lady to only give me THREE pieces. 3. Are you kidding me? I told her they usually give me 5 or 6 at least and if they are only going to give me 3, I don't want it. How would that even make any sense? I'm never going to come back here in the morning, it makes me not want to come back at all knowing they raised their prices and are so stingy with their food. I too, was once a Whole Foods addict, but my heart opened up to a new kind of Safeway; one that was of an unknown joy. The demands of a relentless Palo Alto, Atherton & Menlo Park crowd have created one of the most exceptional Safeway Shopping Stores I have been to in my entire, well-traveled life! Solid POINTS that surpass Whole Paycheck... Ahhhghem I mean Whole Foods: ~ Organic Fruits & Veggies that are impressive, beautiful, & abundant. I've been especially enthused with them meeting just about 9-10 out of 12 of the mandatory eat organic or die list! ~Plenty of antibiotic-free, free-range, hazelnut & dried cranberry, serenaded to sleep at night chickens for sale (at reasonable prices....who would've thought!?)! ~Grass-fed Beef available too! ~and last, but not certainly not least~~ NO ONE asks me every single time I shop there the type of question, like, "Did I find everything alright??" If I found what I was looking for, it would be in the basket and if I didn't, why the f+*k are you reminding me that I could not find it in the first place?! This Safeway location has seen a complete makeover & man, oh man, what a terrific metamorphosis! Previous incarnation was getting pretty ghetto & there were little hoodlums hanging out to the point it was almost intimidating to go in there after the sun went down.....I'd much rather have gone to the Trader Joe's across the parking lot But TJs is more of a specialty item-place for us & not a staple-supplier like Safeway is.... so when the Mr & I were in the area & needed to stop by to replenish our fridge & cupboards, complete surprise set in when I pulled into the parking lot Nice shaded garage-like parking w/ lots of spaces to be found - and the store sits on top of the parking - genius! Similar in setup to the newest SF Whole Foods on Dolores - they probably had the same architect Nice, wide aisles, lots of selection of just about everything. There was a huge line at the deli, SBux was booming w/ people waiting on lattes. What made this a 4-Star review is their Self Check Out Station. It is the most frustrating piece of machinery I've ever encountered! We brought our own bags but after EVERY item, the machine wouldn't let us proceed until the attendant overrode the command. Apparently the bagging side wasn't recognizing the item as it was being placed in our bags, then was telling us we didn't have a bag & it was a nightmare And this was happening at 3 other stations as well.......please fix the software on your machines. Seriously irritated. I've been a Millbrae resident FOREVER. Before the remodel, I was in and out of this store at minimum 7-8 times a week. It was so convenient. I'd pick up bagels for my early morning class, coconut milk in the evening for my fish, sausages to cook for dinner when I was sick of eating chicken, ice cream at midnight because I could... I seriously looked forward to this remodel. Pay attention Safeway because it's not hard for me to go back to shopping at other stores because I've already been doing it for a year. Fix your issues that I am going to graciously number for you here: 1. I just came back from Safeway tonight... the escalator is broken AGAIN. Came in very early on Wednesday morning.... it was not working then either. Should I mention that it was broken on the first day too? Perhaps an omen of things to come? And why is it that when I do need to come in early (5:30am-6am) that the only checker you have open is CLEAR on the other side by the elevator?! Have you forgotten the convenience side of shopping? 2. The store is a mess! Where are all these lazy workers getting hired from??? The area on the ground floor entrance behind the courtesy hand wipes was DISGUSTING! Hand wipes and garbage strewn all over the floor! I bought doughnuts last week. The morning crowd already hit it and I noticed that the doughnuts were getting replenished. Awesome.... except when the person restocking the doughnuts started putting the doughnuts on existing empty trays instead of bringing them out on fresh trays. For example... she put the fresh sugared doughnuts on a tray that previously had doughnuts that were glazed with red, white, and blue sprinkles. Is there no running water in the bakery area that clean trays can't be used??? She also didn't bring all the older doughnuts towards the front of the tray to leave the fresher ones in the back. She just filled the empty spaces in the front for most of them. I could not help but to think of all the "shortcuts" being utilized in other areas of service. 3. I'm not done with the employees. When you hire them... are they required to AVOID the customer at all costs? Because they are experts at it! And I KNOW I'm not alone when I say that! On NUMEROUS occasions I have seen employee after employee avoid eye contact with customers that have been waiting in the deli area for service. I'm not even going to get into how SLOW THEY MOVE. I am talking... I am second in line.... they are helping the person in front of me get some pieces of chicken and that takes a good ten minutes. The deli person goes to the back for who knows what... still hasn't acknowledged me and ignored the other gentleman that was standing by their register. This man goes behind the counter and grabs a plastic fork-- clearly agitated. They weren't even busy. 4. Tell your workers to stop BS'ing. They need to learn what's offered at the store. On one visit, As I was leaving, the person behind me asked the checker if you had any Hostess products. The checker then tells the customer that you don't carry those products yet and don't know when you would be carrying it. I turned to the customer and told her that they've been carrying it for a week but they sell out as soon as they are able to stock them. Are your employees aware of the connection between customers and their paychecks?? 5. One day I picked up some personal sized Simply juice. It had a sale price tag on it for a dollar off and I had 5. She rang it up and it came up regular priced. I brought it to her attention that it was marked with a yellow sales tag. She then got a bagger to run and check the price. This was fine. He got back and confirmed what I said and then she started questioning the bagger as if I put the sales price on there myself. Like, for reals? 6. Some of the workers look like they just rolled out of bed. Groom yourselves please! 7. One evening there were two checkers with their numbered lights on indicating they were open for service. The one closer to me had no line and as I walked up... the checker saw me, backed up and started small talk with the other checker as she did her work. Can the employees just get over themselves and WORK? You have one saving grace. Sushi. All three of them smile and thank everyone for each purchase. It's a shame we can't clone them for the entire store. I know parts of my grievances sound absolutely snobby but sadly, I'm sharing all very recent personal experiences. I dig eating a quick $5 lunch from Safeway's deli section: Monday: Tomato Basil Soup Tuesday: roast beef Chicago Slider Wednesday: Crab Corn Chowder soup Thursday: Caesar salad Friday: Pacific Clam Chowder mMgood. But they keep the utensils behind the deli counter and not out front next to the soup. Precious lunch minutes tick away while I wait for a clerk to hand me a spoon. This turned out to be a reoccurring annoyance with this Safeway. I ask Deli Lady, "How come you don't put the spoons out front?" But I really mean, "PUT THE DAMN SPOONS OUT FRONT!" Deli Lady: "The HOMELESS help themselves to the soup if we leave the spoons out. Then we have to throw away the whole batch." Me: "AHHHHH" (enlightened and disgusted) "Good idea, keep the spoons back there, nice and clean". To be straight, I've never seen a homeless person at this Millbrae Safeway. But geriatric traffic offenders driving massive Oldsmobile and Cadillacs? Yeah, plenty of retirees in Millbrae. I've seen them BANG and BUMP around the parking lot and then drive off. I normally love Safeway and Safeway brand items but this location is getting 1 star and a review from me because of their security issues. Now most people don't review grocery stores because who cares right? But because of my experience last night, I hope it draws more people away from it after midnight. I was at the gym till about 12:45 a.m. at the 24 hour down the street and I got a text asking for milk. No problems there. Fast forward 30 minutes later when I'm walking down the aisle with half and half, milk, soda, and raisins when two guys grab a case of Corona each from the soda/beer aisle behind me and just WALK out of the Safeway. Did I mention there were people still shopping? There were about 8 cars in the parking lot, the store is brightly lit and the poor cashier couldn't do anything about it except run after the thugs who had a car waiting at the door. Yeah, it's just beer but according to the cashier it happens frequently. In this current economic crisis we're facing, who's to say they're going to stop at just stealing beer? There's no cameras, no security and higher management just doesn't care about the safety of it's employees and customers. I called the next morning to express my concern about the theft and lack of security (someone should) and all I got was the cold shoulder. If that were my cashier or my store, I'd suck up the extra bucks for peace of mine and a fewer chance of shortage. So, this place has been renovated, but there are still better places around. This place sucks. The produce is not fresh and expensive. A lot of things of the shelves are past their expiration date, so be sure to check things when you buy them here. The fish is HORRIBLE. The bakery is OK, I guess. The only benefits of this place are the selection of everyday items and that it's always open. Some people tend to say that things here are cheaper than other more uppity stores in the area (Andronico's, Drager's, etc) but I think that is only true for the specials. Daaaaang, this Safeway is nice! I have a well documented mad-on for Safeway but if this was my local outlet, I might just change my crabby Safeway attitude. I swear the produce section is larger than the entirety of my local Safeway store. I didn't check, but I bet even the parsnips are fresh. There's a huge natural foods section that looks like you wandered into Whole Foods. Bins of exotic uncooked grains, bottles of herbal supplements aplenty, Lush-style chunks of natural soaps that are probably pure enough to eat (I'm lucky to score some bars of stinky old Irish Spring at my store). THEY HAVE A HOT NUT BAR! No, that's not a euphemism for some freaky Safeway aisle of depravity, it's literally a bar that serves up every different kind of hot roasted nut you can think of. I didn't even know that was a thing and now I'm mad that my Safeway doesn't have one! I was here smack in the middle of a Saturday and there was a perfectly acceptable number of checkout lines open - no excessive waiting, and the staff seemed legitimately friendly and helpful. Whoever owns this place decided to rebuild the safeway into a whole new complex. 2 stories with parking on the ground level. 2 different entrance from the parking lot with very inconvenient maze like parking grids. It's a pain in the ass trolling around with the carts from second floor to the first floor. Speaking of getting upscale... I'm chinese and probably the most chinese ABC out there. This safeway apparently rips off the chinese community. For example, Napa Cabbage; normally $2 at a chinese market.. or even $2-3.5 at Dean's Grocery down the block. Even $2-4 at a high end Japanese market. HERE! It's mother-fracking $1.99 a lb. My Napa Cabbage came out to be $7.68! Call me cheap, but who the hell pays that price when I can get quality goods at a Japanese market? If you buy thing that t he cashier never seen before, GOOD LUCK! They would be looking in the guidebook for the code, and or asking for help. Long wait at the cashier because more of them are uneducated and part time. For example, American's normally don't have Napa Cabbage in their diet. The guy didn't know what that vege was when it reached the scanner. Another example, Daikon... Most never seen that before. My sister asked me to pick up a cake for her sons b-day party the following day (she was too sick to shop). This is one of the worst pharmacies I have experienced. Here's what's wrong: 1. They Don't Care. They don't call you when your prescription has a problem. At Walgreens, if they have problem renewing a prescription, for example, someone will call you. But not here. They just let you go there and find out yourself, and then rudely tell you that it's your job to call the Doctor. Oh, by the way, they don't call you when the prescription is ready neither. I receive courtesy notification may be 50% of the time, if that. 2. They are RUDE. One time the male cashier handed me the prescription without saying anything. At other places like Walgreen, they ask for your phone number or address to verify your ID. Here, they ask for your birthdate, and they can't hear you if you don't speak out loud - and that means everybody else can hear you. I think it is a big security risk giving out birth dates. I had the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE this morning from a checker named Sylvia. The poor girls at the Starbucks had a machine & a register down and it was obvious they were super stressed. I felt so bad. The starbucks girl asked me to take my drink to the register and I did. Sylvia picked up my drink and said "What is this!?" and I told her what I had ordered. I said, " I got a chai tea" and she have me a smirk on her face like I was an idiot for asking her to ring me up. I said, "There is a code on my drink because the Starbucks register is down." She snapped at me quickly, "I KNOW THAT MAAM!" I looked at the customer behind me and I would tell he was a bit shocked to hear an employee raise her voice at a customer. I worked in retail for 10 years, and I could NEVER get away with treating my customers the way Sylvia did to me today. read more

I must say, I am very disappointed in the new Safeway. In my opinion, they should have put the parking upstairs and the food shopping downstairs. There go the days of just "running into the store". The fact you have to wait for an elevator, climb stairs or go on the escalator just to "run into the store" is not a very good idea. If it were me, Trader Joes, down the street, is much easier to just "Run into the store". I was so looking forward to this store, but I think I will stick to Burlingame where it's much easier to get to the food. The store is beautiful though and lots of good things about it, I just hate the fact that it's upstairs. read more
