This is the 24/7 Safeway in truckee. It has a large parking lot and feels like any other Safeway. I would say inspect your fruit beforehand. I saw some mold in the blueberries which was a bummer. However the green grapes were very firm and everyone said they were delicious. We got a lot of cooking supplies here like pancake mix and bacon. With Covid-19 still in full swing and on the uprise, this location does NOT practice safe procedures. I counted 5 staff members wandering without a mask including the store manager for this scheduled time. The manager believes the chin area is a safer place. Distancing is NOT practiced. On asking a deli staff member if it was mandatory or voluntary to wear a mask when working, he stated mandatory and if you don't the store gives you one. It was already hard enough to even find what we were looking for as all the milk and many other products were sold out completely. On top of that the cashier didn't apply our membership and deals correctly and overcharged us over $15 for some of products. They even reassured us they had done it correctly but clearly mistakes were seen on the receipt even though it wasn't even that busy at the time in the store. We were here during Memorial Day weekend to pick up a few items and specifically a Friday special. At check out we noticed a discrepancy in the price actually significantly in our favor. We thought about just leaving but decided we didn't feel real good about that so mentioned the discrepancy to the very friendly lady at the customer service desk, Lori. She was very, very thankful for pointing out the difference. She call the manager Jael who very kindly said go ahead and keep the items without needing any further adjustments and thanks us for pointing it out. Lori was so pleasant and friendly, really nice to work with. I know this Safeway get crazy busy but it seems to be well stocked. Back in the Bay Area the specials are always out of stock. I usually don't review Safeways, but this one was a lifesaver during our stay in Tahoe. Open 24 hours, and with staff that goes out of its way to help you out and be friendly, I was quite impressed at this one compared to those from the Bay Area. Whereas most Safeways near me feature apathetic workers and sometimes deserted stores, this Safeway was different. When trying to find homemade pico de gallo, the man from the butcher/meats area personally dropped his knife, took off his gloves, and led us to the area happily. When in line to buy alcohol, in addition to the typical "you look 18" after I show ID, the cashier started giving me very interesting drink recipes with liquors I've never heard of. I think frankly I am HAPPY and excited that there is a Safeway here because it really helped us during our Fourth of July stay in Tahoe. I mean, it's almost like, when you're out in the middle of nowhere you can usually trust that a gas station will be available at any time for amenities and bathroom breaks ... you can trust that Safeway will be open on a holiday because you KNOW you forgot something. Of course, this also means that the lines here are horrendous and the service isn't all that awesome, but hey ... if it means you got that extra bag of charcoal for your BBQ ... fantastic! Of all the markets in Truckee , Safeway is the lowest rated. I think management and the corporation needs to ask themselves why. Myself ------- I would give this Safeway minus 5 stars if it were an option.I have had a second home in Truckee for 36 years, and since Safeway is closer to my home, I thought I would give it another try. My biggest complaint is the management of this store. But since I am at it, I will also review the quality of foods sold as well. I am a credible reviewer. I have been a Registered Dietitian for 47 years, with three degrees in Nutrition. I am also a good cook and try to use quality ingredients. In my early years I did graduate studies on food labels, so I am one that always reads the labels. I last visited this supermarket in the late afternoon, on a Thursday, five days ago. Although I did not want to make a special trip, I decided to return spoiled food. This was not the first time. Also in the course of 36 years, I was overcharged numerous times. When I arrived , no one was available at the customer service counter. I waited and still no one arrived. I then asked a cashier to call someone, but still no one arrived. I then decided to call myself. To be heard across this store, I loudly stated......."customer needs help at customer service." Still no one arrived. Finally someone came. She identified herself as B.M. ( I am using her initials only ) and that she was the manager. She then went on to reprimand me, and accused me of yelling , and told me that my behavior was unacceptable , and she was about to throw me out of the store. Yes, me, a soon to be 79 year old senior woman , a little old lady. How pathetic. I've been retired many years and worked in a clinic with patients from many different countries. In all those years, I never had one negative encounter and when I retired, it was with honors , receiving a plaque from the Governor of California , commending me for outstanding service to the community. I felt angry and humiliated. I recall before "Covid" that there were problems at this store - very long lines at the register, unhappy employees, overcharges, butchers not knowing how to cut meat, spoiled produce not removed, fishy smelling salmon, improper storage, prices jacked up on the weekend, and the list goes on. Some of them problems cannot be resolved at this store, but need to be addressed at a corporate level. Heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, etc. are prevalent in our population. Residents and visitors of this town deserve to have a supermarket that sells processed foods free of hydrogenated fats, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors, and other harmful ingredients. One example among many is the foods sold at the bakery. If you look at the labels, almost all have such a long list of unhealthy ingredients that one can get dizzy just looking at such labels. I should follow through and attend a Truckee Council meeting. I would like to discuss my concerns. I believe this shopping center, called Gateway at Donner Pass , is managed by Kimco Reality. They need to be made aware of practices at this store. On my end, even though I would have to travel twice the distance to another store in Truckee, I should bid this store goodbye completely. Two days ago, I shopped at Raley's. The employees appeared happy, the lines were shorter, and unlike Safeway, they had an express line open. Foods were healthier and better in quality. By far the best Safeway I've ever been to. First off, other reviewers talk about the long waits and how it's overcrowded. I'm sure it's true once in a while but this Safeway had 8 self check out lanes open plus three manned stations at 9:30 am. I can't ask for anything more than that. That's 11 total check out lines on a weekday at 9:30. I would love all these negative reviewers to go to the Safeway in Pollock Pines where they have a total of 3 lanes (no self checkout) open on a weekend. You'll easily get lines of 25 to 30 people with waits of up to a half an hour to check out. I mostly go to Safeway for the deli and today specifically for breakfast burrito. The lady working was super fast and efficient and was doing lots of things at once. Finally! A store with employees who are able to do their job! I feel like I'm in a whole new planet or something. Lol So the breakfast burrito was delicious and perfectly hot. I love adding vegetables to it for crunchiness. Just onions, bell peppers, and jalapeños. Try it! It's great! I also carry a nice big bag of Taco Bell hot sauce packets when I need it for occasions like this. I've come to find out that Taco Bell is useful for at least one more thing other than throwing lard all over their food. Gotta give credit where it's due :) read more

if i could give 0 stars i would given how uncomfortable i was.. passing through this town just to charge the car and decided to pop into safeway the store was nice and clean no problems until i checkout. I went to the self checkout with all my items as the worker fake sweeps to get closer to me and i was using 2 payment methods and me KNOWING that i went to use my other card before i hear "you still owe money" over my shoulder then i realize the worker is talking to me as she repeated my exact total. First off why are you that close in my personal space and second thank you I can read the screen myself which is why I picked the self checkout myself! Then already irritated from that I grab my receipt from my paid items and walk away while she tries to call me and my boyfriend back to the machine for what reason you just sat over my shoulder watching me scan and pay for everything.. so no i didn't walk back to her and i'm glad this isn't my forever safeway , whoever was the old white skinny lady working from 9-10pm around self checkouts on may 14th ruined my experience. read more

I came to this Safeway to purchase a bottle of alcohol and got turned away by GINA because I have a Nevada ID and was accused of it being a fake. Nevada state IDs have what's called the "Greater Seal of the State of Nevada" and GINA accused my ID of being faded where the seal is at. I am a 23 year old woman, I look young but it is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE to be accused of having a fake ID just because it is a Nevada ID and I appear to be young. I have never faced such discrimination from here and have used this ID to purchase alcohol here before. I am appaled and quite frankly will never take my business back to an establishment that promotes employees who make false accusations without obtaining the appropriate knowledge. read more

Headline: Safeway DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS and DOES NOT FOLLOW THROUGH ON THEIR PROMISES. If you get injured by their stores they will DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. Story from my Wife: On Thursday, April 15, I, an 88 year old female, had finished my shopping at our local Safeway, in Truckee, CA, and was pushing my cart out of the automatic doors. The heavy door swung shut on me and wounded my left arm. A person outside (not sure if they were an employee or not) directed me back into the store to customer service. I removed my left sleeve and found that my arm was badly bleeding. Two young employees bandaged my arm, filled out a form with my information, and asked if I needed further medical assistance. At that time, I declined (which I later realized was a mistake), and they gave me a $25 gift certificate for "my trouble." When my husband changed my bandage that Sunday, we realized that the wound was more severe than I initially thought and had not stopped bleeding. On Monday, we called the Truckee Safeway and asked for the manager to see what they would do about the situation. Instead of being apologetic and helpful, he responded "well you have insurance," and said it was out of his hands. He told us we would receive a call from Headquarters, but we never heard from them. On Tuesday morning, I went to Urgent Care, but the wound was bad enough that they had to refer me to Outpatient Wound Care. Now I am in the situation of having appointments twice a week, which has been ongoing for over two months now and I am still being treated. After days of not hearing back from Safeway Headquarters, I called them again and spoke to someone at Customer Support "Corporate Welfare". The representative assured us that they would help us and take care of everything. He told us that the District Manager would call us back, but they never did. When we tried to call and speak to the representative again, we were told by someone else that he was "unavailable" and that he would call us back. Once again, they NEVER CALLED US BACK. After numerous calls, we still have not received any sort of resolution, let alone an apology or any evidence of ownership of responsibility. They have evaded us, lied to us, and have pushed the blame to us rather than owning up to their mistakes. Since the incident, we have learned that Safeway has a reputation for this blatant and unforgivable treatment of customers, especially seniors. We will never return to Safeway and would like to warn others of the terrible way we were treated. They could not care less about their customers, they just want your money. read more

Good friends of mine have a vacation house nearby this Safeway in Northwest Truckee, so i've been here half a dozen times in the last several years. We refer to it as the "Evil Safeway" but it's really a love-hate relationship: -- Love the huge beer and wine aisle; Hate the one-dimensional selection (e.g.only one choice of Porter (and you were out of it) - what's wrong with you people?) -- Love that it's open 24 hours; Hate that it's so damned crowded on the weekend, with all checkout lines extending far into the aisles -- Love the large footprint; But hate the standard, sub-par Safeway selection (really hard to get a good steak here) But I can't complain too much. At least when I'm here, I'm also usually on a long weekend or vacation, so any angst dissipates quickly. read more

So, I visit this Safeway multiple times a week and I love it. The staff is fantastic. There's a gentleman who works in the bakery who has the most delightful accent and is SO friendly. I buy bagels there two-three times per week not only because they're delicious, but because i know he's going to be there to brighten my day just a little bit more. I work as a hiring manager for a local company, and trust me Safeway, hang on to this gentleman. Service and product-quality of that caliber is difficult to come by! I did have one bad experience with the floral department, which is normally extremely courteous and helpful. I asked for a half dozen balloons on a day when they were preparing for a wedding and i was treated as though i'd asked them to re-landscape my entire yard in 30 min. I offered to go to the safeway in kings beach but the women bruskly insisted, with an irritated huff, that i come there. I almost wanted to deny it at that point. I went to safeway to return some Brussel sprouts that were infested with worms... It happens. What I didn't expect was the treatment I received from the store manager, Bob Kleidosty. Bob was on his cell phone and refused to hang up to talk to a customer. Instead he kept with his conversation grabbing the sprouts from me... Only asking for my receipt... Then continued on with his conversation. Never stopping to say hello or asking why I wanted to return the item. I even offered to wait till his conversation was done to continue, but I received a dirty look and he kept talking. Hope you like dealing with people, bad service, and paying too much. And this is coming from someone who LOVES Safeways. I have to admit, they can get away with outlandish prices and bad service just because of the huge tourist population that rolls through Truckee. Its not really like they need to build a base of locals in order to survive. Infact, if it wasn't for the tourists and people who own second homes here, the town of Truckee itself wouldn't be able to survive. This Safeway is located conveniently in a large shopping center, right off of Donner Pass Road, and truley is the best and biggest grocery store that is nearby. When I go to Donner Lake, I try to pack everything I need with me, this includes food. I only come here when I forget something and HAVE to have it, and I'm stamping my feet the whole time. I never bother getting a cart (no matter how heavy or how much I need to buy) as there is so many people shopping inside the store that you can't push a cart around, and checking out.... be prepared to wait. Its the worst on busy holidays and weekends like memorial day, fourth of july, labor day, etc. You get the idea. Also in the winter time with skiers. The tourist season never dies down in this town so Safeway is always busy. I've been inside this store all times of the year and on all types of weekends (especially non holiday ones) and have yet to have a pleasant experience. This place is packed on a Wednesday afternoon! I always leave here feeling like I'd just been asked to grab my ankles. This review is for the floral department who delivered the most AMAZING bridal bouquets for my September wedding. If you are getting married in the area look here first. Christy (sp?) and her staff made the most gorgeous floral bouquets imaginable for my wedding, for an extremely good price as I was on a tighter budget. They literally looked like they were out of a high-end bridal magazine! Safeway floral is always high quality and I'm thrilled these wonderful ladies were able to deliver exactly what I was picturing. All I did was bring in some photos I liked, gave my general color scheme and some flower suggestions, and they went from there making sure everything was in season and would work with the weather. I could not recommend them enough! They also made awesome boutonnieres for the groomsmen that were a simple white rose with some cool greenery that went perfectly with the bouquets. At this location they have not done a lot of weddings other than providing loose flowers for arrangements, but were definitely up to the challenge, were very willing to work with me, deliver ON TIME, and make me one happy bride at the end of the day :) My Mother in Law kept the bouquets at her house (unwrapped in vases) and said they lasted for over a week at her house, wow.
