My colleague ordered the blackened shrimp salad and that definitely looked better. Perhaps I should come back for dinner and try a different item. Service was great. Much nicer than the strip mall that is attached to, parking was a bit of a bummer as the front lot packs up relatively quick. Good thing is that there's street parking if you don't mind the walk. Definitely a good energy from the crowd and the waiters are very attentive. The crab/shrimp rice ball specials were fantastic--although I'm still not sure if there was actually fish in there! I ordered the halibut for my main which was a little bland, nothing some salt couldn't fix. Sage is a local Italian restaurant on Route 4. They are BYOB, offer parking, and have a large spacious interior. They give all customers Italian bread with olives on it. I find most of their dishes to be fairly basic. There are some other Italian restaurants that have more robust flavor, but a couple dishes I consistently enjoy are the Thai Calamari appetizer and the Shrimp Scampi. The last time I forgot to ask for my scampi over linguini and they served it with rice. I wish they had asked. My husband got Penne Vodka. I don't love their Penne Vodka, because it is not as creamy as other places tend to serve it. It's closer to a marinara sauce, which is why my husband actually likes it. Pasta dishes range from $18 - $20 and often come with a salad. I can't say Sage serves my favorite local Italian, but they are decent. read more

The good news is that my sesame crusted salmon was actually excellent. The bad news is that the proprietor's managerial and organizational skills need work. We were a table of 11. The food took a long time to come out. When it did, it was 5 1/2 trips of two plates at a time spaced 2-3 minutes apart. The last plate was at least 10 minutes after the first plate. The people at our table that got their food first did not know whether to wait and let their food get cold or start eating while others had no food. I complained to the waiter that they should have lancaster stands and large trays or work in teams so they could bring out 11 dishes in either one or two trips. Lancaster stands are those criss cross folding stands that they put next to your dining table and then a waiter brings out a big round tray with a bunch of dishes. In the alternative, group serving is where waiting staff services their own table but when there is a large seating they team up for 2 minutes and bring all the food out at once. The manager got defensive. He told me he has been in business 8 years and knows what he is doing. He said the AC in the kitchen was not working properly and it was a 90° day. I admitedly lost it and told him to go back to cooking school and get a mechanical contractor to fix his AC. However the point was that the food should have been left for a few minutes under the heat lamps and coordinated to bring everyone's food out at once. We had a diabetic at the table that was served dead last after waiting 45 minutes for his food. It was just chaotic and they could do some work to better engineer delivery from kitchen to table. That said I won't pan the place. The food was good and I would probably give them another chance. read more

The Thai shrimp appetizer was especially good and everyone in our party had a different entrée which everyone enjoyed. We had a wonderful dinner at Sage on Friday night. The food was out of this world. The Thai calamari was cooked perfectly, as well as the broccoli rabe and sausage appetizer. I had the Tuscan ragu special and it was magical. The portion was large and I had the left overs on Sunday, I swear it was better haha. My boyfriend had the honey roasted salmon, it was cooked perfectly, but he would prefer less sauce. This is merely a personal preference. A friend had the chicken special, which she loved, and the rest of the table had the Tuscan ragu as well. We finished our meal with the bread pudding special and the warm apple encroute. I visited Sage for a nice relaxing dinner after a long day of work, and I got exactly what I was looking for! I read ahead and knew to bring a bottle of wine because they are BYOB. They sat me immediately and served my wine without missing a beat. I enjoyed the burrada salad as my appetizer, which was large enough to be my entree! It was delicious, and they serve it with prosciutto, fresh tomato, and greens. As my entree I enjoyed the seafood special, which was amazing! I even saved room for dessert, creme brûlée. The sage chicken I got was out of this world. It's so pleasant to see the craft of the chef when working with chicken. Too much of something and it steals the whole plate, too little and it's bland. Some of you Yelpers need to get out of Bergen County more often! I don't see how this restaurant is worthy of 5 stars. The menu is dull. The specials were dull. The best item that landed on our table was the focaccia loaded with olives. Wife started with the smoked trout appetizer. Three or four fillets on the plate. They were good. 60% of the plate was then filled with baby greens, capers and red onion. The greens were not dressed. There was a horseradish dipping sauce served on the side. Why do restaurants that give you a free salad with every entree serve you appetizers with portions of salad that are larger than the free salad you are going to receive next? It makes no sense. Do diners really want THAT much salad? My starter was a special named eggplant napoleon. It was two long thin slices of lightly fried eggplant with some roasted red pepper in the middle and some melted mozzarella on top. The portion was skimpy for $11. The eggplant was flavorless. Wife's main was a special item named Chicken Eduardo. It was a fried chicken breast cutlet and a thick slice of prosciutto on penne or with a vodka-like sauce topped with melted mozzarella. It took a few bites to determine if it was truly chicken breast or a recently frozen patty. We are betting on former. My main was the double (just $7 more) of Pork Chops Murphy served in a brown garlic demi-glace sauce with mushrooms, onions, hot cherry peppers and potatoes. This was a solid dish. Excellent restaurant - at least 4.75 stars overall - had to round up to five since four just didn't do the place justice. Food: wonderful. Here's what we had: Mozzarella caprese salad as an appetizer. HUGE. One of the best salads I've ever had - and that's just taking into account the perfectly dressed mixed greens with a balsamic flavor. Fresh mozzarella, tomato slices and sun dried tomatoes dotted the lovely greens. (Salads that came with entrees were totally unnecessary after this - but he was blown away with the honey mustard dressing on his.) Shrimp sage - YUM. 6-7 jumbo shrimp, perfectly cooked I might add, with shitake mushrooms in a white wine/sage sauce that was enhanced by cream. The dish was rich and satisfying, and felt luxurious without being too much food. It was paired with tender, candied carrots that were wonderful, and rice pilaf that I found to be just okay (sort of a throwaway). Overall an outstanding choice. He loved his veal bruschetta off the specials menu. Enormous piece of veal, thick and cooked to perfection. Smothered with bruschetta and mozzarella. Despite the gigantic nature of the dish, he couldn't stop himself from eating every bite. The veal bruschetta was paired with an absolutely DIVINE penne in garlic oil - simply perfect pasta that I could eat over and over. We split a wonderful brownie with ice cream for dessert. Delish! Decor/ ambiance: beautiful. High ceilings but an intimate feel. Simple, classy decor. Terrific date restaurant but would also be great to take friends or family. They have a kids menu, but I wouldn't take your kids there at night unless they're really well behaved - it's more of an adult place. (BTW it's located in the space previously occupied by Campania on Broadway.) Service was terrific overall. Zero complaints. Very reasonably priced for what you get. Make a reservation and BYOB! Fair Lawn has some great places of late. From Juicy Platters to Picnic and now SAGE. Roughly 7 months old and already recieving positive reviews, Sage has quality Italian food for good prices. Try the Sage Chicken or the Seafood Diablo. Both were fantastic. Its a BYOB which many prefer. If you hit the weekends you need to call beforehand. During the week its busy but laid back. This is a great restaurant. Kind of a hidden gem. It looks like an unassuming store front in a small run down strip mall. Once inside, the ambiance is very nice. Tablecloths, candles and friendly waiters are waiting inside. Dim lighting provides for a romantic date night. We started with fried calamari which was cooked perfectly had crisp breading and was not oily. It was served with a marinara sauce that was ok, nothing special about it. For the main course I ordered the tuscan ragu. It is rigatoni topped with the ragu sauce, ricotta cheese and shredded provolone. I thought the pasta was cooked to al dente which was a big plus. The ragu itself contained nice pieces of beef short ribs and pork shoulder. While not overloaded with meat, there was definitely enough in there for me. The tomato sauce was a deep red color and not acidy. My only complaint about the dish was that it was a little too salty. That said, it did not stop me from devouring it and I would order it again. We did not order dessert on this trip as the appetizer and main course were filling enough. I do plan on returning here to try some other menu items. read more

It has been my favorite restaurant ever since it opened; my boyfriend and I have declared it our go-to spot period. Everyone else in my family is in love with it as well. There are so many reasons why I love Sage, and I wish I could give it 10 stars for the superb quality of food, the supreme effort the staff puts in to your experience in the restaurant AND outside of the restaurant...and how can I forget...the glorious option of BYOB. What is better? NOTHING! These elements make Sage Restaurant the hands-down best restaurant not only in Fair Lawn, but arguably Bergen County, in my opinion. Rob, Darren, and the rest of the staff at Sage restaurant are not only excellent in conducting business, they are amazing individuals personally as well, in that they are friendly, accommodating, and so much fun each and every time I have come to Sage (and I have been here probably fifty times or more). The vibe of the restaurant is extremely lively, but at the same time, there are soothing tones of green throughout the restaurant that reflect a calming dinner environment. Love the interior of this place. There's ample booth seating as well, and the dining area is spacious. No matter how busy they get, it never seems to be the usual loudness of a restaurant. Lastly, my favorite: the FOOD!! I get so excited when I eat at Sage. For starters.. 1.) Two words - OLIVE BREAD. And it's free at the beginning of the meal. When you dip that perfectly toasted bread into their fresh olive oil provided on the table, I promise it will change your outlook on bread before meals! 2.) Thai Calamari or regular. I highly recommend either because it is simply delectable. 3.) Their Caesar Salad is phenomenal. I get it every time. 4.) My two favorite entrees have to be between the Shrimp and Clams Bianco, or the Ribeye Steak (medium-rare). 5.) Their desserts are all amazing. Overall *** We tried Sage twice as I wasn't sure after the first. Two times is enough for me as in my opinion it is just not anything special enough to put on my go to list. Setting *** Sage is a local BYOB located in a fairly run down strip mall where you can get your nails done and a tan. In the evening it does provide plenty of easy parking. The restaurant inside is nice, nothing truly special except two large semi round booths. There is lots of local art hanging and for sale but in my opinion it is not a positive as it is ghastly. Service *** Everyone is friendly, pleasant and competent. Nothing that wowed us but nothing that hurt besides the host who stinks of cigarettes. Food *** Our appetizers of Mussels, Calamari and Buratta were very good especially the sauce for the mussels. We dunked so much of delicious Olive Foccacia bread into it we almost didn't need dinner. In the end I wish we did stop there as unfortunately the whole experience took a bad turn with the entrees. My Veal Saltimbocca was very tender but incredibly salty to the point that I couldn't finish it. The Fish special was a tasteless mess of a dish that looked like an amateur put it together. The other Fish special was visually more appealing but again was described as tasteless. Sorry, but I do not agree with 5 star reviews of Sage. I ordered the onion soup and found it very bland. (for 5 star Onion soup I would go to Latour in Ridgewood) For my salad that accompanied my entree, I choose blue cheese dressing... no crumbled blue cheese in the dressing, tasted more like Ranch then blue cheese. My husband ordered the Pork Oscar with scalloped potatoes. He said the pork was moist but found hollandaise and odd choice of sauce to accompany pork. The scalloped potatoes were really potatoes au gratin and rather mushy. My entree was off the special menu: Rigatoni ragu with short rib and pork shoulder. Very good, solid dish. I have seen several other Yelpers comment on the ragu special, so maybe they should add this entree to the regular rotation---that would probably sway me to come back. We split Creme Brulee for dessert----the creme was fluffy and eggy tasting instead of a rich, vanilla custard. (for 5 star Creme Brulee-Latour). Looks like I'm going to Latour. read more

This was my first time at Sage. It was a Wednesday at 11:45am. I ordered the Chicken Sage from Jaider, which came with my choice of soup du jour. The complementary bread was fresh and almost a meal in itself. The Lentil soup came as a larger serving than what I'm used to and turned out very tasty. The entree was small in quantity it was still a satisfying meal when adding in the soup and bread. I tried cutting the chicken in strips just slightly larger than the mushroom and then eating one strip with one mushroom. The taste is top notch. I enjoyed my meal while listening to adult contemporary tunes including covers of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark" and Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" in the empty restaurant. Parking can be very tight but you can park at the business next door according to a sign. read more

When my friend suggested we meet for lunch at Sage, I did some preemptive Yelping. While the 4.5 star average fits in with my suburban inflation theory, Sage is in fact a nice option in Fair Lawn. Once you're in the restaurant, you forget you're in a strip mall next to a tanning salon. The waiter was very friendly and attentive, although we were only one of two tables there. I started with a bowl of cream of mushroom soup. They also brought out sourdough and olive bread warm from the oven. I had the lunch special steak salad. It was a decent sized portion with yummy fresh greens and blue cheese. The only thing I would change (maybe my personal taste) is less dressing and a different cut of steak (mine was a little thin and tough at points). If you live in Fair Lawn and you're looking for something a little fancier than IHOP, don't hesitate to give Sage a try. read more

Pleasantly surprised. Was looking for a BYOB for Sat night and saw this place. Was hesitant to book this place just by the location and small front and the fact we were going with others. Luckily they had an open reservation for 7:30. One step inside and was very surprised at just how roomy this place is. Nice decor, clean, a bot noisy, but overall very nice. The retro booths were very surprising. I was intent on the shrimp and broccoli rabe, but settled on the Ragu special with short ribs and port shoulder over rigatoni and I am so glad I did. Even my wife who had the sea bass had to try it. Scrumptious can't even come close. Calamari was good, Thai shrimp very good. I will be back again for sure. 5 excellent stars! read more

I went to the area for a weekend of shopping. Read about this place on Yelp. We went for dinner on Friday night and went back again Saturday because we both enjoyed it so much. I loved the menu choices as well as the atmosphere. The tables are placed so you aren't on top of each other. The food is incredible and the portions large. The staff was friendly and attentive. It says a lot for a restaurant that you go to twice and the food is just as great the second time around.
