Nice rooftop bar. Attire was laid back and drinks were flavor forward. Not the best view from the roof and a bit pricey.

Was there last night with my husband. Quiet night. Server was outstanding from the very beginning. International type of menu with at least an item for everyone (many items for us). Had the Shrimp with Mole and the day soup, and husband had the Gazpacho and Indonesian chicken with sauce on the side. Kudos to the Creme Bruleé. Too expensive. The rooftop bar can't do a simple drink... they have to be super creative and ruin a decent martini. Service is lacking and everything is overpriced. There are tons of other places with better food/ drinks at lower prices in the area. Huge disappointment. read more

I went to this restaurant with a friend and from the moment we sat down it was disappointing !! ( we even joked about being secretly filmed for a " what would you do" episode!!) Sadly the service and food were very poor. My friend asked for bread with his pate only to be told they could charge him $3.50 for a small piece of naan bread ( which he was happy to do because who can eat a block of pâté in its own?!) 10 minutes later the waitress returned to tell him that she had misspoken and that they couldn't "spare " any naan after all! When asked if he could have any kind of toast cracker etc ( which is quite usual with pate!) The waitress said they never serve bread of any kind as the chef didn't want to go in that direction!!. She then gave us what seems like a very lengthy presentation about why the restaurant is so amazing and how lucky we were to have such a skilled chef preparing our food! This was then followed by at least 4 other staff members , interrupting our conversation on several occasions to ask benign things or coming to our table to ask if everything was ok and giving us their opinion of why bread is not served! We then had our very bland entrees followed by dessert ( because we were starving as the portion sizes are tiny, apart from the brick of pate!) It was an exhausting experience and one that we will not be repeating. I can't see that they will last very long with the current way they are conducting this business which is unfortunate as the venue could be something special. The building is pretty but was renovated very cheaply the lighting is very poor ( I'm a renovator and my friend is one of the country's top interior designer's so we have a wealth of experience in that department) I hope this helps anyone considering dining there as it wasn't a cheap experience either. Our bill was a little over $300. There are far superior restaurants in Sarasota that also make you feel special. The whole experience was just odd! read more

The food itself was excellent. That said, everything else was sub par and we will not be back. Extremely expensive for Sarasota and we went for pizza on the way home as the portions were very small. It took 35 minutes to get a cocktail after we sat down. I am willing to pay those kinds of prices, but the experience has to be better. read more

Was a little concerned having read some of the reviews. But I always wait at least 6 weeks for a new place to work out the kinks. In the end my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Yes, a little pricey (for what we are used to in Sarasota) but we both found our meals to be well done and satisfying. Great ambience supplied at a level not typical here. My take is that this place is not what Sarasota is used to, and may represent an evolution in dining experience. I have been through this transition in other places and it feels and sounds similar. This restaurant is getting one star for its beautiful ambiance. We had 7:30 pm reservations but still waited 20 minutes(there were five empty tables at all times). After being seated we waited another 10 minutes for our server to arrive and then another 20 minutes for drinks. The wine list was weak. Our waiter was slow and inconsistent. The pasta was flavorless. The crab cake was good with a burnt short rib on top, which was an unusual combination. If I ever return to this establishment it will be to have a drink on the rooftop which is gorgeous. It's such a shame this restaurant's food and service was not up to par. read more

We visited Sage last Friday night and had a wonderful experience! There were three of us and we tried a few of their unique cocktails that were tasty and creative and our meals were excellent. I had the sea bass which was flavorful and a perfect portion. My family also had the chicken and salmon entrees that both were a great size and had incredible flavor. All were cooked perfectly. Definitely recommend Sage to anyone who loves great atmosphere and elevated dishes. read more

Hands down, best meal I've had in Sarasota. I started with the Caesar salad, made in the classic style...delicious. My main course was Sea Bass. It came wrapped in a steamed pouch, which was opened table side....OMG!, tender, flavorful, subtle, AMAZING!! Dessert was yummy. Our waitress (Bailey) was great. We we're very excited to finally see the newly renovated building that Sage now occupies. Everything was very elegant and inviting. Cocktails were good but glasses were only half full and at $32 for two drinks expected more. I had the Caesar salad and wasn't crazy about the pork belly croutons, very chewy. However the bouillabaisse was delicious but the portion was small for such a high price tag $44? The chocolate mousse for dessert was amazing. Also had a bottle of Pinot Noir from New Zealand that complemented the meal nicely and wasn't overpriced. read more

My wife and I went to the beautiful rooftop bar on a Saturday night. We sat by the fountain/fire pit, the fountain that we were sitting next to overflowed, directly into my wife's purse and ruined everything including her phone. When we spoke with the manager, she assured us they would "make this right". We tried to contact Sage via email and phone with no response. After several weeks, we only heard from their lawyer stating it was my fault. No refund; no phone replacement; no customer service. Will never go back again! read more

I took my wife for a Friday night date night and everything was first class. As soon as we walked in we fell in love with the ambience and beautiful style of the decor. It was a mix of sophisticated class with speakeasy craft. Once we sat, our server was knowledgeable and recommended a fantastic Merryvale Carneros Pinot to start us off. His suggestion paired perfectly with the Tomahawk Porkchop I ordered. The porkchop was juicy and cooked to perfection. To my surprise my wife's dish was even better! She ordered the Thai Bouillabaisse which was an explosion of well thought out flavors that complimented each other for a truly unique experience. Chef Covelli really perfected this dish and my mouth is watering just thinking about it... After dinner we sat on the rooftop bar and enjoyed the company of David (a bartender) who charmed us with some unique cocktails. The view was outstanding and we could see the whole city from up there. Overall I would absolutely recommend Sage as a must go spot in Sarasota. read more

Just came back from one of the worst dining experiences I've had in Sarasota. And looking for something to eat now. The 2 stars are for the decor. I was excited to see the old Ceviche space finally open again. Upon entering, I liked what I saw - but that's where it ended. The food was so-so, the prices way too high, and the worst part was being seated next to a table of 15 - yes, 15 - who were hoopin' a hollerin' all night. We could not hear each other talk. When a party of that size comes in, they need a separate room. The Borscht was more like a beet puree with tiny, almost invisible dollops of sour cream in it. The Sea Bass in Paper. NO - in a crazy clear plastic bag. And such a small portion for $38 - I'm still hungry. There was some kind of potato in there, but that was plastered to the bottom of the plastic bag - sort of melted to it - so I could hardly get to it. And th4e sea bass predominant taste was something like red pepper. A companion had the chicken, and it was too small and too spicy for her. THe pasta I am told was bland. The tortilla soup was pretty much a watered down tomato soup. Caesar salad was good. I had just plain old vodka straight up - and it was more water than vodka. And for $14.00 PLUS $2.50 for some reason (olives?). Others at my table had mixed drinks that they did not like. Can't see returning here. What a shame - it is such a great space! read more

Very disappointing evening. We had an 8:00 reservation- they weren't busy but we had to wait for our server to seat us which took 20 minutes . We learned that they had already run out of all of the specials and several menu items. We ordered the tomatoes and burrata salad- the tomatoes were so unripened- needed another month on the vine- absolutely no flavor... My 1st glass of white wine was served at room temperature which was disappointing especially with a$13. price tag. I did order a 2nd glass of wine BEFORE our entrees were served- the bar was 5 feet from our table , the bar wasn't busy and yet I had finished my entree before my wine was served. We went up to the rooftop for an after dinner drink where the service was terrific... If we return to Sage we will limit our visits to the rooftop bar... read more

I am happy and disappointed at the same time. Such a cool building , great bar on the roof and then.... you make the mistake of eating dinner. Short version is just don't. The longer version is everything is flat ... as in not enough salt flat. Everything. Next is the minimalistic approach to flavor and choices .... or lack there of. Quality is half decent but the price vs wow factor is wow and damn that price is high for the lack of wow. The staff is awesome and make up for the lack of good quality. The owner put a lot of love into the building and the building is awesome. The joke really turned out to be they had reservations and could "barely" get us in. 23 of the 30 tables open. Whew so glad the could squeeze us in. Spent Close to $400 bucks for two after drinks dinner and tips. Not mad. I just want more out of the food. I know it's first week. Work on the menu and salt levels quick ... don't take it personal or take reservations... first come first serve you will be "bar packed" for most of the night. This is the strength of the place. Sage is absolutely hands down the finest restaurant in Sarasota. The food is extraordinary. The chef greeted us and explained some of the nuances of the cuisine and how best to enjoy some of the more exotic dishes. The sea bass in English parchment would rival any upscale restaurant in the New York (my current full time residence). The antelope was superb and perfectly rendered. The entire experience was other worldly. Our waiter Jesse Lippert is not only an accomplished musician- capable of transcribing Bach for guitar - but he is an absolutely amazing waiter. He is knowledgeable and charming and is a joy to be around. I was reluctant to try Sage since the initial reviews were lukewarm-pay no attention to them. This place is an experience you will remember for years to come ! Bravo! read more

SAGE , a new gem of a find here in Sarasota. From the minute you walk in and look up at the lights and fixtures - the mood has been set for a great experience. The building itself is something to gander at. Just opened, not even a week yet and was surprised how well things were done. PEOPLE need to give restaurants some consideration during the 1st couple weeks to work things out. Sat down at the main downstairs bar, love the copper top, ABBY our bartender was Very knowledgeable about the Bourbon we liked and poured us a delicious Old Fashion & my husband a Manhattan. We shared the Chicken Paprikas, it tasted excellent with the spices used & served with light & airy spazettle. We had fantastic service and atmosphere is very classy. (Almost speakeasy like)The rooftop bar looked very cozy and it was hopping. Will definitely become part of my normal rotation of restaurants here, would love to stop in for a late night cocktail and dessert! read more

Interior is beautifully done and a vast improvement over the old Ceviche (I was there the last night before it closed). Service is excellent. My companion had cesar salad and tagliatelle, both of which she liked. I ordered scallops. The dish was beautifully presented and tasty BUT consisted of only four small scallops surrounded by three tablespoons of mashed potatoes, for $34. This would have been considered an appetizer in most other restaurants. As others have noted, there was no bread served. The tiny entree and a cup of coffee totaled $45 with tax and tip. We did not order drinks, but their wine bottle prices are very reasonable--all are twice the price of a single glass. Otherwise, this restaurant is unfortunately way overpriced. I doubt I'll be returning any time soon. If you want to eat very, very expensive food that is really worth it, go to Beach Bistro. read more

My group had dinner at Sage and were highly anticipating the evening based on the press for the restaurant! While I wish I could give it a higher review our experience was not worthy. The restaurant decor and setting ARE beautiful. The food was great. The drinks are EXPENSIVE and half the size of what you would receive at other fine dining establishments. The service was abysmal; long wait for food with no explanation, empty water glasses with no wait staff in sight to offer water. We witnessed management staff being very rude to other diners. Fortunately there are too many other great, fine dining experiences in Sarasota with helpful, friendly staff and management so our group see NO reason to return to Sage! read more

This restaurant leaves a lot to be desired... The decor is lovely and warm but the food is less than average. The beet and salmon appetizer was horrific and unattractive with 4 small square beets interspersed with small cubes of salmon of poor quality. 3 people at our table left hungry as dinner portions are small and the accompanying potato or rice is minuscule at best. Our friend had a salad which was so bitter and stringy that she returned it. The octopus was chewy and tasteless... The chicken was ridiculously small and unattractive with a skinny slice of potato underneath it. There was no bread served and service was poor. And the hostess was unsure where our table was and sent us upstairs, only to find that we were seated downstairs. This restaurant has a long way to go to entice avid diners to return. We do not recommend eating here. Go for a drink on the roof and dine elsewhere. read more

We started out on the rooftop deck for a drink with stunning views of downtown Sarasota. Moved to the main dining room for our meal which was outstanding. We were so excited to dig into our meals we forgot to take pictures! I had the salmon and hubby had the tagliatelle. Mine was prepared gluten free, much appreciated. Both were so delicious. We stopped at Sage for a quick meal and sat at the bar. Very good food but no bread. It's a silly trend for the gluten crowd and chefs trying save a few penny's yet charge high end. One of the most, if not THE most, unique and classy place in Sarasota with delicious dishes from all around the world! My favorite is the Tagliatelle pasta, which is completely fresh and handmade in the kitchen. The cocktails are fantastic too, especially The Conclusion with the edible Szechuan button! Definitely stop by the roof top bar for an incredible view of Sarasota. Sage SRQ is definitely one of my top favorite places for atmosphere, food quality, ambiance, and amazing service. I took my wife, her family and friends from California to Sage for my wife's birthday. I was embarrassed as our entrees took 1.5 hours to arrive. Multiple Excuses from the floor manager were unacceptable and I am truly angry and embarrassed to have taken my lovely wife and her family for a night of very expensive horrors. We waited a year to visit Sage, as we know how hard it is to start a new restaurant that is trying to achieve greatness. There are still flaws and rough edges -- it was not a flawless experience. This review is based on one visit on a Thursday night. We arrived an hour early in order to check out the roof-top bar. The front of the house was confused about something. We eventually conveyed our plan, to which they replied, "Come back down five minutes before your reservation and we'll seat you." Oh tsk tsk, how tacky. A world-class restaurant would have retrieved us, or at least called the bar tender to remind us. Points off. The bar was just fine, the view was pleasant, but there were no munchies available. Hmmm, a few more points off. We made our way downstairs to the check in. Again, there was some sort of confusion with a waiter assigned to seat us. "Oh, take these people instead." Not terribly welcoming. The facility is interesting and charming -- we were seated on the mezzanine level. It does need a couple of acoustic panels. Conversation with Eating Companion (EC) was close to shouting level. We ordered drinks. It took a while and while we were waiting, we noticed small bread plates on the table but no bread ever arrived. When the drinks arrived, we asked the waiter. "Oh no, there is no bread served". More tacky, worse, confusing. He then removed the plates. Sigh. For appetizers, EC ordered the baquerones escalivada. This is marinated white anchovies on toast with vegetables. EC though it tasty, but the toast was a bit hard. Some olive oil underneath would have helped. I ordered the the roasted garlic caesar with smoked trout and habanero sugar. This dish was a complete failure. I tasted no garlic or habanero anything. I think the preparer forgot the garlic and the habanero. The trout was quite good. Our waiter removed the salad from the bill. Entrees were char siu butter fish for EC and shredded pork Peking duck wrapped in phylo for me. The butter fish was meant to be a Korean re-creation with kimchi and was quite outstanding - perfectly cooked. The duck was less successful. While the duck itself was very good, along with daikon, carrot, and scallion, I'm ambivalent about the phylo. I suspect a rice pancake would have been better, but I'm not sure. The real issue with the dish was soy hoison poured in the bottom of the dish making a sloppy swamp soaking the bottom of the phylo. It was a bit of a mess. We did leave room for dessert. The Sage's website lists three graduates from The Culinary (CIA, Hyde Park), one of whom was listed as the pastry chef. The offerings didn't impress us as anything a true pastry chef would be proud of. We ordered the carrot cake something, but it was very mediocre - the waiter also removed it from the bill. The wine list was very good and priced reasonably. Our final judgement - the best we can give is three stars. They have a ways to go. I would skip this place and go to Euphemia Haye (Longboat Key) for a truly world class dining experience - the food isn't as au courant as Sage, but the experience will be superior in every way. read more

Love, love, love. We have been there three times now and having thoroughly enjoyed ourselves each time. We did have reservations and were seated promptly each time. The hostess and wait staff are prompt and yet not pushy. Reading the menu leaves your mouth watering and a difficult decision of what to try. Everything we have tried is delicious. New favorite place in SRQ! Been long time Indigenous patrons and this place is giving it a run for its money! So well executed on the food and wine. The rooftop bar is great for a sunset. Have a drink on the rooftop but save your time and money in the restaurant. Too long of a wait, even with a reservation, took forever to get the food. Portions are small and pricey. We know it's an "American" thing to have bread on the table, but if you're going to have to wait that long to get your meal, may need to rethink that. read more
