First time to Sage and it won't be the last! The venue was visually stunning. We learned it's actually a historic building - being the original Sarasota Times. We even got to hit up the rooftop for a pre-dinner drink. The food was phenomenal. The menu changes every 3 months but we had a couple staples - to start the fois gras. I had some time to kill but not enough for a full sit down meal so I ordered the Scallops Starter to go. I barely had enough time to use the restroom before my take-out bag was ready. A biodegradable cardboard box in a paper bag contained 2 of the largest scallops I have ever seen. They were 2 inches across and 1 1/2 inches deep, resting on a bed of greens and onions with plenty of fresh herbs. I felt that I should have received more than 2 scallops for the $25 + tax price tag, even though they were cooked to perfection. read more

I get frustrated with Yelp because people will rate very average restaurants with 5 stars and outstanding restaurants with 3. I think it's because not all Yelpers are true foodies. Because there is no way Sage SRQ is anything but 5 stars. It is a fantastic restaurant - everything from the rooftop bar, to the ambience of the historic building, to the friendly and knowledgeable service, and of course the delicious food. EVERYTHING is deserving of 5 stars. There is a reason Chef Covelli has won awards - including recognition from the James Beard Foundation - because everything he touches is pure gold. The bartender, Aaron, has a special flair with his cocktails. I ordered The Scottish Thistle which was gin based with hints of rosehips, and a blackberry and sage shrub. It was very good. The cocktails in the dining room are even more inventive. I took a chance and ordered The Green Goat. It had a blueberry goat cheese foam which intrigued me but also scared me a little. Our server, Katie, told me how extraordinary it was so I tried it. It was amazing! My husband ordered their version of a Mai Tai which was also outstanding. But the food...wow. I don't even like foie gras - but I loved it here. It was a napoleon with foie gras mousse and a generous piece of foie gras on top. Simply divine. My husband really enjoyed his pork chop and I though the sturgeon was delicious. And Katie's recommendations for wine pairings were perfect. Beautiful location, spectacularly decorated... but we came to eat, and the food was spectacularly disappointing. We won't be back. We started at the rooftop bar with a couple cocktails, which were tasty. When we went downstairs to the dining room, the hostesses were very friendly. After we ordered, a food runner brought us an amuse Bouche, which we thought was a nice touch, until we tried it. It was a sliver of cucumber with goat cheese and some micro greens. But it was bland, bland, bland. Which would set the tone for the rest of the meal, unfortunately. We started with the foie gras, which was delicious, but was screaming for some bread or something for texture. The few pieces of pear they gave us were cut quite small and weren't really enough. When my GF asked if they had any bread, we were very rudely told by our server "We don't serve bread. Use the pear. That's what it's there for." Then he walked away. It reminded me of the soup Nazi on Seinfeld: "No bread for you!" We also had the beet salad, which was tasteless and underwhelming. My GF ordered the duck, which we were both looking forward to. However,when it arrived, it was not a duck breast, as we were expecting, it was an anemic, overcooked leg, that was chewy and under seasoned. For the price they charged, and the way it was described on the menu, I would've expected a beautiful breast with well rendered fat and crispy skin. Nope. I had the lamb Rogan Josh. It wouldn't stand muster in any Indian restaurant I've ever been in. Just grossly under seasoned. Shame. We both live full-time in Sarasota, and there are many fine dining options here that we love. Granted, Sage is a beautiful spot, but perhaps they should spend more time on their food, rather than on the decor. read more

I was with a party of 8 for a bachelorette and every single dish we ordered (except the Caesar salad apps) needed salt - which wouldn't have been a problem to add ourselves if our waitress didn't disappear for 30 mins at a time. After ordering dinner at 9:15 pm and getting our plates at 10:15 pm - I will definitely not be recommending this place to groups or anyone else looking for a delicious spot. I stumbled on to this a block from my hotel. I was totally stunned! The ambiance was great, the tables spaced so you could have a conversation. The music was nice, but a bit loud particularly since I am hard of hearing. The service was STELLAR! It's obvious they take the time to train their staff and it shows! Not overwhelming, but there whenever I thought I needed something. Then the food! I had the foie gras appetizer, it literally melted in my mouth. The house specialty is a Thai Bouillabaisse with lobster, scallops and shrimp in a red curry sauce served over perfectly cooked Black Rice and julienned veggies. It was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. For dessert I had the Better than S'mores, a perfect finish. Last minute dinner plans and was recommended to Sage by someone familiar with the menu and their vegan options. They had a vegan option for appetizer, main, and dessert but offered another vegan main dish in vegetable curry. As a curry connoisseur, I couldn't resist. This was so flavorful and filled me right up. Love the choice to use forbidden rice (I think that's what it's called) instead of white! The dessert menu came and despite being extremely stuffed, it's rare there's a real vegan dessert on a menu so I said yes. Warm, flavorful, and really hit the spot. Having read so many glowing reviews, I had been looking forward to coming to this place. Unfortunately, I can't express how truly disappointing the food and service were. We sat at the bar on a Friday night when the dining room wasn't overly busy. Initially, the service was slow but good as we got our cocktails. The Oaxaca old fashioned was probably the highlight of the evening. After ordering an first course, the server came with an amuse bouche...sage gnudi with apple chutney...it was flavorless. Then the wild boar cannelloni arrived. I'm not sure what the cannelloni dough was made of but it surely didn't have the texture of pasta...more like a flour tortilla you'd eat in an enchilada. Then the braised short rib dish, which was ok but I've had a lot better and this one was a bit dry almost seeming like eating a roast. Oddly, none of the dishes were actually served hot...they were barely warm. We would have ordered dessert, but it had taken at least 20 minutes between when the bartender brought the dessert menu touting the in-house pastry chef to when she finally came back to check on us. So we decided to go elsewhere for dessert and just asked for the check. Was greeted by the hostess and waited briefly for our server to lead us to our table upstairs overlooking the first floor. Usually tasty and dependable restaurant. Last night was a wiff, though. 1/2 duck and fingerling potatoes roasted in duck fat was so-so at best. Duck is all about managing the skin. You need to render the thick layer of fat and then crisp the skin. Neither step was taken last night, leaving the duck skin fatty and chewy. Since the duck fat wasn't rendered there wasn't much fat for the potatoes, which were whole and bland and barely coated with duck fat. I was expecting potatoes crispy and unctuous from being sauteed in yummy duck fat, but got only oily potato lumps. I liked the sauce--bright and citrus-y--but there wasn't enough of it. This restaurant is amazing. We were in the area for a work conference and one of our friends recommended it. The ambience is great and the pictures around the restaurant are very interesting. I normally don't eat lamb, my boyfriend ordered after I asked the waiter for his favorites and wow!! That lamb was amazing, super tender melting in your mouth and perfectly seasoned, it was really nicely combined with the naan and the beet yogurt reduction. We split the Caesar salad, which was very interesting and delicious, instead of croutons they give you pork belly- yes I said pork belly- can you believe that?! Bison brisket was tough and the portion was small. The knife had trouble separating the meat. The thai boullibase was tiny. 1 frozen lobster tail, 1 undercooked shrimp, and 1 undercooked scallop. When I mentioned the portion was small the waitress said this is not Olive Garden, they are European portions. I've been to Europe many times and the portions are much larger. Go to Selva instead. The newest rooftop bar in Sarasota also has the best ambiance of all of them - casual but upscale; cool but classy. Their signature drink list is top notch. Their mixologist - Brandon on the first night we surveyed - was on his game serving up delicious concoctions. On the second night, table service was prompt, attentive and the Manager was ever present. Now, this review is just for the rooftop bar (not the restaurant) and it is the best in town. So, why only four stars? Simply, they do not offer a separate Happy Hour menu. Speciality drinks are $13 or $14 each - and while probably worth it - that is in Jack Dusty territory (Ritz bar) and not on par with most other restaurants. A lot of places in town offer some really good values for HH and we visited several of them on the same night (Duval's, Boca and Bricks). Restaurants attract you with a value, fill up the bar to create a buzz, then encourage you to stay for dinner. It's a proven formula, but I blew my budget at Sage on drinks. However, I highly recommend you try it - and their only one block from Florida Studio Theater - so a great place before a show or the improve. read more

A new resturant (2 weeks?) and they are still working out the kinks - so grading on a curve. Just trying to set expectations. Service was good, but a little inexperienced. We weren't told about any specials but other tables around us were. They had some plating issues. Some of the elements on the plate were pretty cool/cold when served, but others were hot. It seems the timing was off a bit. Food prices were high while the bottle wine prices seemed lower than usual. It helped, but overall on the higher end of prices for dining out. The flavors were excellent! The scallops were perfectly prepared. The Thai bouillabaisse was superb. It was suggested to add pork belly to the Ceasar Salad and that was a great idea. Perhaps a bit heavy on the amount of dressing. Really good and imaginative cocktails. Wonderful location. Very interesting spaces to eat and the rooftop area is excellent. We'll be back. The server, Jonathon, was outstanding! The building is a true gem and has a charmed history in Sarasota proper. The concierge (manager) was argumentative with me at the outset of our experience. He stated, "that they did have vegetarian and could offer a vegan dish"! My serious spice allergy was in question. He over promised, and couldn't deliver. The food was over priced and was beyond mediocre. Over the years I've been blessed with phenomenal, global dining experiences in places like Paris, France. This establishment has a lot to learn about any dining at all. The parking situation isn't patron friendly. The food lived up to the poor experience I've heard about! I have food/spice allergies and to my dismay I had a terrible reaction to the garlic which I requested them to go light on. We would have had a better vegetarian meal at Chipotle!!! My new favorite restaurant in Sarasota. Valet made parking simple on a busy Friday night. The historic building has an open feel with two story space but they have managed to control the sound and the design is terrific. We saw people dressed in everything from nice shorts to an evening gown. That's Sarasota during Season. We arrived at 5:30 for a pre-Sarasota Ballet dinner but by the time we left at 7:00 the restaurant, balcony and outdoor patio were nearly full. Make a reservation. Our server, Patrick, greeted us at the hostess stand and walked us to the table immediately bringing water and returning for drink orders. The staff is very responsive. The menu is brief and exquisite. Several Gluten Free and Vegan options appealed to our guest and she remarked that vegetarians frequently are given only choices of dishes with mushrooms but there were creative non-mushroom dishes for her. I had the salmon over Israeli couscous and it was divine. My partner had the chicken provencal and said it was the best meal she had tasted in a year. Our vegetarian friend loved the potato leek soup, the frisse salad and we all split the bahji appetizer with apricot chutney which was outstanding. I highly recommend Sage for food, ambiance, location, service and interesting people watching. We had a leisurely dinner and drove the five minutes to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I had the pasta with porcini mushroom and truffle. Very nice portion size with homemade pasta. Waiter recommended a nice wine that paired well. Although not usually a dessert person, we decided to split the chocolate mouse dome. They had a guy playing classical violin to modern pop songs, it was such a relaxing way to end the evening. After moving to Sarasota from the NY Tristate area, we had almost given up hope of finding a restaurant worthy of the designation 'NYC quality'...well, last night we were treated to that experience at Sage by Chef Christopher Covelli. We chose Sage to celebrate a special occasion, and from the moment we arrived this is exactly what happened...we were made feel special. Our server, Jordan, was exactly what you would expect in a restaurant of that caliber...enough with the accolades, and let's get down to the nitty, gritty. Upon being seated, Jordan realized that we were there for a celebration...he didn't ask, he just brought over 4 complimentary glasses of champagne...then proceeded to give us a tour of the menu, explaining that the Chef changes it 4 times a year (with each season) the one offered this evening was the Spring Menu. As appetizers, we had the Avocado, Spinach and Lime Caesar Salad with Romaine and Parmesan, the Carrot Ginger Spring Rolls with Shrimp, Pickled Vegetables and Fresh Herbs, and the Sauteed Scallops with Onion and Fennel in Pernod Broth...in our family, forks reaching across the table is customary...and so we did, tasting and savoring each other's selections. Main courses were the Heritage Berkshire Pork Porterhouse (cooked to perfection) and Thai Bouillabaisse of Lobster, Shrimp, Scallop and Fish in a Red Curry Coconut Sauce over Black Lotus Rice and Vegetables which is the Chef's Signature Dish and never comes off the menu...all outstanding. We skipped dessert because a special dessert was waiting for us at home, will definitely try it the next time. Also, a very interesting and affordably priced wine list...The bottle of Seghesio Chardonnay was the perfect accompaniment to the meal. This is a restaurant that is appreciated by food connoisseurs...if you are looking for big portions or a fast-paced dinner, I suggest you go somewhere else...on the other hand, if you are ready to relax, enjoy your company, experience a great dinner...you have arrived.
