Saigon Beach is a small restaurant near Newport Beach so be wary of parking as it may be hard to find and it costs money; I believe parking is free after 6pm. It's a fairly unassuming place since when I entered, all the employees were hanging out in a place where we couldn't even see them. They sell Banh mi's (baguette sandwiches), pho (soup), wings, bao buns, and noodle dishes. I tried out one of their buns and bahn mi's and I must say it was like a happy, colorful explosion in my mouth. Vietnamese food isn't one of my favorite genres but this place puts a lot of attention to detail to the quality of their food. A banh mi and two boa buns cost me $25.96 and I shared it with a friend. Maybe it's because I'm Vietnamese and have high expectations for Vietnamese food, but I was very disappointed. The photos looked so good, so I was excited to try this place. I ordered the combo bánh mì, but the bread was soft and chewy instead of light, airy, and crispy. There were also so many pickled carrots and daikon that they completely overpowered the rest of the sandwich. It also had an unpleasant bitter taste. My husband ordered the pork belly bánh mì, and his sandwich was extremely soggy. The Vietnamese coffee was also disappointing. It was premade and poured from a plastic jug in the refrigerator directly over ice. It tasted old and had a strange aftertaste, as if it had been sitting in the plastic container for too long. So I give Saigon Beach 4 stars instead of 3 because being located in Newport Beach on the peninsula by the pier, I had low expectations and knew what I was getting into so I don't feel it's fair to give 3 stars when I had a feeling beforehand that the food wouldn't be authentic. However, it is 3 stars when compared to authentic Vietnamese food - so be warned - yet they do have some yummy dishes. The shrimp spring rolls for example have avocado - not authentic at all - yet very delicious! The sauce that comes with the spring rolls (we got the pork spring rolls too and those were even better than the shrimp) wasn't authentic at all either but was very tasty. The Banh mi sandwiches were also quite tasty and I would recommend ordering them. I've had both the chicken and pork and both are great. However DON'T order the Pho! The broth was awful and the worst pho I've ever had it actually didn't really even taste like Pho and the noodles were weird like synthetic noodles. If you're a tourist or not used to Vietnamese or spicy food then this would be a great restaurant for you since it's good tasting food - just not very authentic. read more

I was surprised when I got there because I thought it was a sit down restaurant but the set up is really for take out/delivery. We used to go here often in 2018-2019, but haven't been back until January. We came in at 3:30 PM, which is a slow time of day. We came in and ordered a pho, chicken wings, green rice, and a couple pork bao. The food came reasonably quickly, and overall was very good. The wings were fantastic, by far my favorite. The green rice was also good, and everyone ate it up fast. The pork baos were good, but the one jalapeño was a surprise to my little ones. The pho broth was good, but not outstanding. The ambiance was, in a word, COLD. The door was always open so the restaurant was truly COLD. Also, the staff were cold; we had to wait for them to come from the back to take our order, and they never checked in on us. Also, there is very little seating space here; we wedged ourselves into a corner with the largest table, but had to move some chairs to make it fit. The 420 green rice is my favorite dish from this restaurant - which has shredded marinated chicken on a bed of cilantro rice. I like to pair this with sriracha. The egg rolls were huge and delicious and worth the 9.00 price point. I ate 1/2 of the 4/2 and saved the rest. The pho broth would get a 2. It was overly salty and lacked any true beef broth flavor. It also lacked the traditional spices you taste in a good pho broth like the star anise and ginger. However, I do know that they are serving a non-Asian population and so the flavors have been adjusted to the audience. Very disappointed! Tried Saigon Beach for the very first time, yesterday and I will never be back here again. As soon as I walked in, no one was at the front and waited about 15 min until someone finally came out. Young lady that came out, greeted and gave me a slight attitude but I paid no mind to it. She was prob not having the best day but showing customers attitude is not very nice. I ordered a Bánh Mi combo sandwich, Nam Nam Wings and Pork Loaded Fries. When the young lady was making my sandwich, it was very unsanitary. She put a pair of gloves on and she placed the bread on the hot stove/flat. As she waited for the bread to heat, she started touching fridge handles, touching surfaces with the same pair of gloves. Grabbing raw wings to place in the fryer. Not once did she change those gloves. So this is very unsanitary. Once she was almost done making my order a young man came out, he started helping her to complete the order. He was wearing AirPods and I saw he removed his AirPods as customers arrived. As soon as customers placed an order he took off his AirPods and didn't even washed his hands. He went straight to the kitchen and started touching food! They honestly don't seem to care here. So if you gonna eat here, be careful. I love various types of Asian food, and if I'm looking for the best Viet food particularly, I'd tend to stay in the Garden Grove/Westminster area.
