Honestly this spot has gone kinda downhill over the years. I used to come here for lunch when I worked in downtown San Mateo and the food was solid so when I was back and craving some pho I thought I'd pop by. They took our order quickly and got our food out quickly as well so no issues there. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside it's a no frills restaurant with plenty of chairs and tables and a big tv that plays random Asian videos on YouTube.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The one that was playing when I was eating was this girl fishing in between rice paddy fields. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside it was empty on a Saturday night which should have been a warning sign but I ignored it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Second was that there were absolutely no Asian people inside other than the workers which again I should have noticed but it's ok.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Anyway the food came out and it was decent but nowhere near as how I remember it tasting pre-covid. Will definitely be retiring this place from my food roster.

Egg rolls over rice noodles and side of broth. Chicken and sea food pho with bean spouts, lime, and chilis.

It was cold this morning and I had a craving for hot soup. We decided that the most fresh tasty soup would lbe Vietnamese so we went to our go to place. We ordered number 19 and number 38 and they were both delicious. The soup was served steaming hot, with the traditional sides of lime, basil, bean spouts and hot chilis. My wife had the egg rolls over rice noodles with a side of broth. The egg rolls were crisp, fresh, and cut into bit size pieces. The broth tasted like it would be fantastic to help a head cold, it was smooth, fresh, chicken broth with a hint of spices. Great lunch at a very reasonable price and the service was outstanding. Quick and to the point. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Small family restaurant with an old school charm and the owner was our waiter.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Imperial Rolls (5)

my family and I have been coming to saigon city for years now- and can definitely say their imperial rolls are the best! besides the filling being delicious, the crispy skin is so unique and goes perfectly wrapped in the lettuce, pickled veg, and noodles with the dipping sauce. as for food, we always order some variation of the beef pho. I love getting just the rare steak since I prefer a thin tender beef, but my parents love adding the tripe and tendon too. the soup is delicious and the rice noodles aren't too mushy which I like! [[HIGHLIGHT]]the restaurant is very casual and cozy, and the service is always so quick.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] overall, definitely recommend stopping by for the spring rolls and a hot bowl of pho

    Grilled Pork Chop Over Rice

First time in central San Mateo and realize there's so many Asian food around. Stumbled across this shop and decided to give their rice dishes a try. The pork chop was flavorful and sweet. Good mix is lean and fat meat on the bone. Though the meat was a little on the drier side the further away it was from the bone. The salad on the side came with some mayo creamy sauce. I wish it was placed on the side and not directly on the dish. Otherwise the service was attentive and quick. Overall enjoy my dinner with my partner

I came here a year ago and I ate at the restaurant and got the pho and chicken and rice. It was really good and I especially love the imperial rolls! They were crispy and filled with flavors. Also the portion were really good for the price. However I ordered take out yesterday and got the pork and rice with imperial rolls and the rolls were soggy but the pork was pretty good. So I recommend getting the imperial rolls there when it's fresh but overall I really enjoy this place!

    pho & banh mi

food here was pretty solid! they serve both banh mi & pho which is not what our place back home does. it was nice to have both options. service was fine. they were polite and kind, though clearly more interested in watching TV than checking up on guests. i appreciate their efforts nonetheless! there are no extra silverware or sauce cups provided at the tables; you have to request them for some. same goes with napkins. as for the food itself, the pho was REALLY generous. i was surprised to find so much tendon, tripe, and meat. i finished my noodles before i could get through all the protein, which is never the case for me! the broth was excellent, though we noticed it wasn't clear like traditional pho is served. while it did not affect the flavor, it was interesting. [[HIGHLIGHT]]the building is relatively small but still big enough to maintain privacy at each table.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] overall, it is a decent restaurant. it has its hiccups, but the food is very good. a little pricier than what we're used to, but it all delivered!

We went on a Saturday for lunch and it was crowded, we had to wait a few minutes for a table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant decor is simple and seats 35 people.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have a lot of options on their menu for such a small restaurant and great value. The Vietnamese crepe was very good. We ordered other dishes as well, pho, chicken basil over rice, and garlicky noodles. We also ordered takeout for a weekday lunch recently. It wasn't as crowded and service was quick. The staff are very nice every time. The food is good. I rate them 4 stars because their chicken dishes are just OK.

Large chicken pho vs medium beef pho
    Jason X.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]No major issues, just didn't love the food or experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm not an expert but the pho seemed "meh", the beef pho didn't have tendons or tripe despite the description, and the kitchen seemed to forget our order so we had to wait while multiple tables who came in after us got served first until the server checked in for us. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was busy throughout our dinner though, so maybe we just don't have the right palette![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Had dinner my sister last Thursday night at Saigon City. Didn't know about this place and only discovered after realizing Ben Tre was gone. It was a good replacement--although Ben Tre was better--and I was craving some 5-spice chicken. My sister ordered the fresh spring rolls and ordered the fried spring rolls. Everything was very good--fresh, delicious and plentiful. Saigon City might be by Go-To spot in Maddy-O as their food is good for an affordable price. That is right up this guy's alley. Service was also good-- no complaints. Check the pics.

Fresh outta SFO I located this tasty spot. Grilled pork Bun vermicelli bowl, grilled pork banh mi. Rice noodle bowl has limited amount of veggies, heavy of the noodles, Good amount of meat. Fish sauce was a bit sweeter than average. Banh mi was a nice combo of light pickled veg, grilled pork, w a sweet tangy marinade. Quick service. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Pretty busy inside restaurant on a Sunday afternoon.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Yes, I would return.

    catfish claypot and rice

Needlessly long review here but I feel like rambling. tl;dr food was good and the price was good I was hungover today so I spent 3 hours trying to figure out what to eat. Nothing really sounded that good and I had heartburn from last night, which made me wary of getting something spicy. I remembered that when I was drunk last night, a friend mentioned how I got them onto catfish dishes at Thai places, sometimes curries, sometime just a saute. Unfortunately, both the Thai places I liked that served these dishes closed, so I spent a significant amount of time looking through spots that might serve catfish. All the Thai places that had it nearby looked a bit overpriced, and I saw Saigon City has a catfish claypot. I used to have a friend who just loved this restaurant, and I never really wanted to go because he loved the pho, which isn't my favorite dish. I went once, got some meat and rice plate, was fine but forgettable. My mom disliked this restaurant but never bothered to explain why. So I figured today would be the day to go and try it with a fresh mindset. I walked in knowing I wanted to get that catfish claypot. It hit the spot. I can't say that it was perfect, like I think it could use some more ginger, green onions, maybe yellow onions too. But to get a meal of catfish and rice for 20$ including tip is a steal in 2025. For sure satisfied my craving for catfish, which I haven't had in 3-4 years. I'll be back, and it'll be soon.

Beef and imperial roll bowl and fresh lemonade
    Tiffani T.

The food here was absolutely delicious! I had the beef and imperial roll rice noodle bowl and a fresh lemonade and I absolutely loved it. The beef was perfectly cooked in my opinion and the roll was crispy and flavorful. The portion was very large in my opinion and I ate every last bite. Also very nice service as well. Will definitely be visiting again.

This place is a hidden gem. It's a landmark as long as I'm living in San Mateo 35+ years. Good food good prices good service, friendly no nonsense Vietnamese restaurant.

I came again for dinner with my family and everything was consistently good as usual. We even got to try a couple new things we haven't tried before. We ordered our three favorite rolls to start than for entrees got the filet pho, big gao fried rice and house fried rice Pho Roll 5/5 stuffed with flavorful ribeye, crispy shallots on top add a nice crunch and the fish sauce dip is the perfect perfect compliment and not overly fishy at all Imperial Roll 5/5 always served hot and when you wrap the lettuce, Thai basil and mint (all served with) around the roll it creates the best bite Fresh Shrimp Roll 5/5 something simple just executed so well. The shrimp is plump and juicy with all of the fresh veggies and rice noodles. The peanut sauce is savory snd sweet Filet Mignon Pho 4.5/5 just nitpicking, the beef could've been a little more tender. But that was the only thing I could pick out. The broth was deep and umami. The accompaniments turned it into a flavor bomb. The noodles had the right amount of chew and were so satisfying Big GAO Fried Rice 4.5/5 big portioned served with a big piece of bone marrow. When all mixed with the steak and rice it creates a perfect bit. I do wish the salad it came with was dressed but the raw veggies serve as a good palate cleanser between bites House fried rice 5/5 first time getting this and was genuinely surprised how good it was. Another fairly simple dish just executed perfectly. The Chinese sausage was sweet and reminded me of a Filipino longanisa. The shrimp and egg were both cooked well too and the seasoning of the rice was savory and flavorful The service was quick as usual and we were lucky to get there when the place wasn't packed yet. We came on a Thursday and we were one of the first in line even though we arrived just five minutes before opening. The dining room had energy but wasn't loud. We just see amazing looking plates being brought to everyone around us. I've tried a couple dishes here that weren't for me in the past but once you know what you like here and see the things GAO does especially well, you'll never have a bad experience

When you first walk in there is an iPad with a waiting list, I went on a Sunday and waited about 25 mins for 3 people which is not a bad/ long wait. It is located in downtown San Mateo so we just walked around the streets whiling queuing. Starting off with the drinks lemongrass ginger ($8) was such a lovely combination and reminded me of ginger drinks my mom used to make. The milo coconut freeze ($9) was my absolute favorite, Milo is a typical Vietnamese childhood drink that I remember and it paired so well with the coconut freeze and herbal jelly! Fish sauce chicken wings ($17) were also so amazing the sauce was nice and flavorful, the wings were crispy and not soggy despite being drenched in the sauce, and the added salad/vegetables in the dish with the extra sauce was addicting. Next for us was "what da duck" ($44) garlic noodle with duck, which was something I wasn't thinking too much about because garlic noodles are just garlic noodles, but this dish paired with the duck and sauce blew me out of the park. The duck was so nice and tender and the garlic noodles were perfectly al dente. Lastly the SeaZilla ($125), it came with a variety of seafood items such as abalone, softshell crab, lobster, and more. It is combined on top with a banh canh base of lobster roe broth. Overall I loved the fresh seafood that was in the dish and the broth. I think it is a dish to splurge and try on once. Overall the service was amazing, all the staff were attentive even when they heard my chopsticks drop. They heard and reassured me that they will get me another pair!

That really threw me off, especially because I saw a Yelp review before coming that showed bean sprouts with the pho. Secondly, they served my pho with thick, flat noodles instead of the traditional rice noodles you normally expect. I politely asked the waitress if those were the only noodles they offered, and she told me they also have the traditional pho noodles.. you just have to request them. I've honestly never had to ask for regular pho noodles anywhere else, so that was really strange to me. The broth was also very watered down and lacked flavor. The chicken was dark and honestly didn't even look like chicken, which made me not want to eat it. I took two bites of my bowl and ended up leaving very disappointed. I also want to mention that parking was a hassle. There's very limited street parking, which made the experience even more frustrating. I understand that every pho restaurant has its own recipe, and I'm very open-minded when it comes to trying different places. I'm not a picky eater at all, but this experience was just way off from what I'd expect when ordering pho. I'm honestly not sure how this place has so many positive reviews based on the experience I had. The one positive thing I can say is that the customer service was good. The staff was kind and attentive throughout my visit. Unfortunately, the food itself was a 0/10 for me, and I wouldn't come back.

Customary at most Vietnamese restaurants, you get your food with minimal check ins and not even a plate clearing until the bill comes. This was NOT the case here. There service was definitely in the A/A+ range! I ordered on my phone via QR code, but there was an option to order in person from a server. I ordered many items to try out. I ordered spring rolls, crispy salt and pepper wings, grilled pork banh mi, beef dac beit pho, and a Thai iced tea. Thai Iced Tea was pretty good. Grade: A I thought the Spring Rolls were decent, but what made them even better was the peanut sauce! I always hate when the peanut sauce is watery and this was far from that! An excellent gooey peanut sauce and maybe one of the best I've had fpr consistency. Grade: A- Crispy salt and pepper wings definitely had an incredible crunch. They were up there in crunchiness. The drumettes were meaty which I appreciated. They were well seasoned also. I think I need to try their other wings before crowning these, but some of the cruncheist wings I've had for sure. Grade: A- Beef Dac Biet Pho had some real high quality meat in it. I had options in noodle and my go-to for any pho spot is the egg noodles. I wish it had more bo vien in it, but I appreciated the combo of meats. The broth seemed authentic, but I wanted a tad more flavor out of it without adding sauces. Overall, the pho grade was a B+ bordering an A-. The star of the show was the grilled pork banh mi. The meat was tender and saucy. In fairness I asked for extra pickles and mayo, but I was very impressed. The bread had the crispy crunch we all look for but minus the stale bread. The breads soft yet crispness made it seem as if it just came out of the oven! I'm going to dub this as the best I've had in the Bay Area! There I said it! Grade: A+ Everyone who ordered the sampler seemed very pleased at other tables, I would definitely try that. Also, want to try the other banh mis and noodle options for the pho. There was a nice vibe at this place. I didn't feel rushed although they do close fairly early at 8pm. The server's mom is the one cooking in the kitchen and I appreciated the family feeling at this place. They do have a newer location in San Francisco that has a DJ Friday nights that I may check out. I believe the server said that they are open til 2am on most nights, but I may have misheard her. Feel free to Yelp that location. My only disappointment was that I really love papaya salad and it was not an option. I may make this my go-to spot from now on, but as a Yelper, we all know we will keep trying new places. This will be the one I continue to frequent. Well done Pho de Nguyen!

Hunan Mifen is another good spot worth trying if you love authentic Asian cuisine…read more I don't eat spicy food so I was happy that they have some dishes that is not spicy, I love the flavor of their broth, tasty not salty and it has a balance. I love that they have variety of appetizers and side dishes. Price is very reasonable for a freshly cook dishes. I would give them two thumbs up

Had low expectations coming here and was pleasantly surprised!…read more Food: T-he braised beef noodles were amazing. Noodles were chewier than most beef noodle soups I've had and the beef pieces were very tender and soft. The soup wasn't too spicy by itself and had alot of depth and flavor. -Pro-tip: There is a little self-serve station near the kitchen where you can get add'l condiments like cilantro, green onion, chili, and pickled daikon. SCORE. Add in the cilantro/green onion for a flavor explosion. -Ordered one of the combo noodles + 2 sides. For my sides, I got a blanched bok choy and a fried gyoza. The bok choy was needed to help cut the spiciness of the soup and to add veggies b/c without it, you'd just be having carbs, beef, and soup. Gyoza was a win too. Service: FAST and friendly, just how I like my non-fine dining restaurant experiences. You scan a QR code at the table and then choose an english/chinese option. If you have questions, you can ask the staff, but there isn't a TON of options to choose from, so make it easy on yourself and order a noodle soup. Ambiance: Ample seating at 1:30pm on a Sunday. Didn't have to wait, which was a big plus as all the other restaurants in San Mateo over near 3rd/4th and B street were packed. Overall: Highly recommend and would come again. This might be my favorite niu rou mian spot!
