This place really doesn't look like much from the outside, but step in and you'll taste one of the best banh mi's you can get in the area. I always get the grilled pork banh mi which I believe is around ($7.50). It used to be cheaper (and the original price is still on the menu) but once you get rung up it's a bit more than that due to a recent price change. Regardless, it's super tasty and fresh every time and their bread is always the perfect amount of crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I did have to knock a star though because the meat is sometimes a hit or miss where it's sometimes way too salty, and they don't fill the sandwich much at times. I've tried some of their other dishes previously but the banh mi is what really gets me to come back. I was craving Vietnamese food on a gloomy Friday and chose this place for its breadth of vegetarian offerings. I couldn't decide on a single item, so I ordered the Vietnamese Noodle Soup and the Steamed Rice with Special Spicy Tofu. The noodle soup came with rice noodles, lots of soft veggies, and some spices. It was comforting on a cold evening, but when I had the second portion the next day (the one entree was enough for two generous servings), I was struck by how one-dimensional the flavor was. I was hoping it came with more garnishes like peanuts or herbs or spices. The tofu dish came with tofu, rice, a fried egg, an tofu egg roll, and a "salad" with lettuce and veggies. The fried egg and egg roll were good, but I composted the side salad as it looked suspiciously wet and bedraggled. The sauce was not evenly distributed on the tofu, so bites alternated tofu blandness and one note pepper spikes. I was also pretty disappointed in the flavor of this dish, but it came in such a huge portion that I was able to use the rice and tofu as a base for meals later with added garlic and veggies. The staff packaged the takeout quickly (10 min) and efficiently, but didn't put their masks on until I walked into the store. All in all, I probably wouldn't return as the flavor was pretty lackluster. But since I paid $25 (including generous tip) for essentially four large servings of food, I would recommend this as an extremely fast, cheap place to get a large portion of filling food. read more

I love supporting the small and local independent businesses around U-District! Saigon Deli has been one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants that I have consistently come back to for the past three years. The manager is always very friendly and if you order a banh mi to go, she makes sure you get it in less than five minutes! I often grab a banh mi for when I'm on the go in between classes! Get: The Banh Mi- I recommend the pork, but the tofu is good too! I find the chicken to salty for my taste. They put cilantro, jalapeños, and pickled carrots inside of a buttered and toasted baguette! The Bún- I like the tofu, shrimp and egg roll bún. It comes with lots of veggies, noodles, and protein! The sauce is also very flavorful. I recommend getting it spicy if you like a little kick! The Vietnamese Coffee (but only in the early morning)- I ordered a Vietnamese coffee (coffee with condensed milk) at this place with my dinner one time, and was up until 5am the next morning! The pricing is also one of the best I've seen out of any Vietnamese places I've been to. I've also gotten the Pho and the rice with chicken and vegetables. The serving for the chicken and rice is quite large and I always have extra for a snack later or the next day! The service is always amazing as well, even when it gets busy the food is always delivered quickly and if you're getting takeout they are very efficient. The sandwiches meat was sweet even the tofu ones and they didn't have the full vegetables they usually put on them very limited even though I asked for extra. I was in the neighborhood of Saigon Deli and ordered a couple of their shrimp spring rolls and their version of the banh mi which they call the Vietnamese Sandwich Spring rolls were just fine how I like them and the peanut sauce was most delicious although I could have used a tad more. And the price value was excellent The Vietnamese Sandwich was a tad bit different than I was used to. The seasoning was a taste that I had trouble really embracing and the ingredients too not the maybe typical. I have spent time in Hanoi so accustomed to the real thing. The bread or baguette was the best part, crunchy and full of flavor. I enjoyed this aspect of the sandwich the most. If I ordered again and I will return perhaps I would try and fine tune the ingredients more. I tried this place and another in the area after I read a blog post mentioning the best bánh mì sandwiches in Seattle and this was by far my favorite. I found it a little hard to find. The address brings you to this main building but it is actually around the corner in that same building structure but just on a different side than where I thought it was. I got banh mi with bbq pork which I noticed to be pulled pork rather than the usual chopped variety. I thought that to be a great choice as it made for a juicier sandwich. I would say that I wish they packed their banh mi with more meat/toppings, especially since my usual go-to Vietnamese restaurants put in more toppings at a cheaper price. The pho was good, and I have not really tried pho that had wontons in the past. After finishing the meal, the nice server gave me and my sister homemade Vietnamese yogurt for a sweet treat. Saigon Deli in the U-District is a standard Vietnamese restaurant with pho, rice noodle dishes and the like. They also have teriyaki on the menu. Prices here are actually decent, but typical given the heavy competition for customers in the area. I ended going for the pho, which I thought was disappointing. The broth was bland and flavorless. The yogurt to accompany the pho was an unusual dessert given the typical cream puff. The consistency of the yogurt was similar to jello. It was just okay. Overall it was a subpar dining experience on the whole with better Vietnamese dining options to be had in I-District. For the Ave, I would say Saigon is typical however. read more

This is a solid spot to get all around good Vietnamese food! Also, if you're eating fried eggs on your banh-mi, rumor has it this is the OG. The spring rolls are freshly made with just as fresh ingredients. The herbs and shrimp really come through and are of course perfectly complimented by the peanut dipping sauce. The banh-mi is a-okay, until you add a fried egg, then it a-mazing! I never would have thought of asking for such a topping, which is embarrassing since I'm a self proclaimed egg slut. I can't say it's the highest quality on the block, but definitely a good fast eat if you're every in a pinch. Banh mi: really good sandwich! Very simple, no frills and honestly not much filling, but the classic French bread was great. Pho: hot take but this might be my favorite pho on the block. Takeout was extremely hot when I got home and the flavor was very strong. I will say, probably on the saltier side. That's alright for me, I like my food flavored.
