I've had this place bookmarked and I am SO glad I finally made my way over. I went during lunch, so it was BUSY and a little bit of a mad house but the staff kept up with the rush impressively well. I sat down. You order and sit down and then go back up to pay and you're never given a ticket or a receipt but somehow they manage to get your order and price correct which only adds to its charm. From what I've heard I think i've heard of more people coming to get the banh mi than their Vietnamese food. The banh mi came out really quick and tasted good. I liked the fact that it came out hot. Even though we've moved out of Seattle, we regularly make the trek over for the best pho in town. My wife is vegetarian and can't speak more highly of the veg pho. At most other places we've tried, the veg broth is pretty darn bland and doesn't flavor the veggies much at all; basically just steamed vegetables and noodles in hot water. But at Saigon Deli...amazingly flavorful veg broth! And it stands up well taking it to-go and eating it at home (they always provide very good instructions for how best to prepare it at home for best results!). Saigon Deli was a staple of my college years. The number of banh mi purchased here is downright embarrassing. Regardless, I would vouch that they have my favorite pork banh mi in the city. The price for a banh mi has gone from $2.75 to $3.75 in the last 5 years, but it's still one of the most affordable meals in the U District. The French baguette is always freshly toasted and is loaded with the pickled carrot and radish, jalapeños, mayo, and a heaping portion of that perfectly marinated pork. Do yourself a favor and add a fried egg for $0.75 - you won't be disappointed. The small dining space makes for a very quaint setting and the service here is always extremely friendly If banh mi aren't your thing they have a full menu of Vietnamese cuisine from pho to rice dishes and vermicelli bowls. Don't skip on the yogurt as it's ridiculously refreshing and a unique finish to your meal. Note that they no longer serve the yogurt for banh mi orders, only entrees. Saigon deli is a go-to spot for a quick and cheap sandwich. I get a banh mi with egg to go, which I would give a solid 4 stars for taste, quickness, and price. I've tried a rice and pork dish and wasn't very impressed by it, it wasn't something I couldn't have made and was really watery because of the sauce. The meat in it was ok and overall flavor was lacking, but I could see that being a family cooked dish if I was Vietnamese. It also came with a free yogurt dessert which was pretty good and similar to a Beijing yogurt, which can be really expensive here in the US (3 bucks for a small cup at the Asian Mart up on the ave). I had my Bahn Mi virginity taken here and it was fantastic! The bun is super big and the meat is tasty. It's also pretty delish that they'll add a fried egg to the sammich if you like! Woot! I went three years of college without trying Saigon Deli, and that was a mistake. It's in a slightly less visible location, but it's very close to UW campus and the rest of the restaurants on the Ave. They are probably most well known for their Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches), which are filling, delicious, and extremely cheap. But I personally love their bun, which is vermicelli noodles with lemongrass sauce, fish sauce, and a topping of your choice (this ranges from spring rolls to chicken or pork). The sauce is so flavorful, they have a healthy helping of vegetables in it, and the portions are ginormous. My favorite bun is the one with tofu and spring rolls. It is really a perfect lunch. The lady who works there during lunchtime is very pleasant and friendly, as well. With delicious, inexpensive food and great service, Saigon Deli is the perfect lunch spot. read more

Been going to Saigon Deli for 10 years now and it has always reigned supreme. My usual order is a ham Bahn mi, some meatballs, and some shrimp and pork spring rolls. The Bahn mi hasn't been beat anywhere else. The bread is always fresh, and the mix of warm and cold ingredients in the sammy seems to be great. It's got the pâté in it and it's very good, although has more of a soy sauce flavor than other places. It doesn't make it "better" but it sets it apart. The meatballs are my favorite! The shrimp and pork spring rolls...the pork needs some work it's usually just a dry thin slice of pork. The other pork rolls with the crunchy stick are actually my new fave! It's the same pork as in the meatballs! And to wrap this up, all the hot food is excellent. I get the chicken, not sure what to call it but has the chili peppers in it. It's BOMB. read more

Apparently they're not affiliated in anyway whatsoever. But the sandwiches here beats the Saigon deli in the ID a looooong way. The sandwiches are a bit pricier but it's so worth it. You have the option of adding an egg for only .75 cents. I ordered a BBQ pork with egg and let me tell you, it was amazing. The bread was my favorite part. It was crunchy, flaky, and soft. This is the nearest "not only pho" Vietnamese place to my work. I've ordered rice dishes, noodle dishes, banh mi, and of course pho. Each time the food reminds me a little bit of home, but a bit more bland. I have a few other places I go to for pho, so I won't order it here. Nothing against them for that. But I'll go here for the rice dishes and noodle bowls. The rice dishes (I went with the Special Rice) come in many variations of an egg over easy, some pork, a little bit of fresh greens (lettuce, cucumber, carrot). There is a small bowl of nuoc mam, which I doctor up with various chilis. The cold noodle bowls are what Zao Noodle Bar wishes they can make. And it's not all that hard, just don't be lazy about things. The sliced veggies are at the bottom of your bowl, so really mix things up before you eat..otherwise you wind up with soggy veggies at the bottom. You can get various meats or tofu as your protein in this dish. The banh mi are a bit disappointing. They're just too..light. The bread is too airy, it needs a bit more weight, heft, and crunch. The filling (BBQ pork) was fair, but no jicama, cucumber, or jalapeno was to be seen..or pate or butter..so yeah, it was just a "lite" edition of a traditional banh mi. They provide a complimentary yogurt dessert at the end. It's kind of weird but a nice palate cleanser. I'll be back, but only for the rice and noodle dishes. read more

Because of Saigon Deli's sub-par location, I knew this place had to be good--how would it stay afloat in the over saturated Ave area otherwise? I finally had a chance to go in today, and had a pork bahn mi with a fried egg. It was good overall--the meat had some intriguing flavors that I could not put my finger on, which probably made it taste even better. I've only tried the bun bo hue. Good flavor, and spicy. I like to support small family owned businesses and not so much the hipster-fusion spots so this was an obvious pick. You can get a banh mi sandwich here for around 5 bucks......I opted for a vermicelli bowl with grilled pork and an egg roll. It was really good and only ran me 10 bucks otd....This Saigon Deli by the university is operated by central Vietnamese people...with an integration of northern flavors. It's a great deli with amazing food and people. I'd definitely recommend giving them a try. The loaf is crusty on the outside, and soft on the inside. It was about a foot long, and cost about ~$4. Can't beat the value of this item at this price range. Also, the pho broth is very well flavored and has that quintessential mild yet deep broth flavor. Under $10, you are gonna get a great bang for your buck. We picked up two Bun Bo Hues but there was nothing bun bo hue about them. Missing the correct noodles (they had used pho noodles and run rieu noodles), the correct herbs, veggies and meats (over cooked beef slices no pork hock). Gem of a place! Love the variety of soup noodle that's not just your run of the mill beef pho. The hot and sour soup was flavorful and has plenty of veggies and protein.
