I came here today for the first time and it was the worst decision of my life. Do not come here during your lunch break, you will regret it. They took 45 minutes just to get my order wrong. I told the idiot cashier that I wanted shrimp egg rolls and egg noodles with shrimp and instead I received shrimp spring rolls and mint white noodles. I did not argue with them because my lunch break was already over, I really needed to head back to work, and I didn't want to get in trouble with my boss. In addition, I was observing the waitress going at every table giving water except for me. I found that very rude because she would look at me while passing by. I came here for dinner. As we walked in, we were greeted hello. We were seated at a table in the corner. I noticed the huge fish tank at the back of the restaurant. My daughter wanted to look at the fish. Very cool. As we got seated, we were served iced water. I looked at their menu and ordered the number 89 which was grilled beef with vermicelli noodles. I also got to try the thick noodles with veggies. I liked the thick noodles with veggies. Very good. However I didn't like my vermicelli noodles. They were too soggy and had a starchy taste to them. I immediately stopped eating the noodles. The meat was flavorful and delicious but the noodles ruined my whole meal. I should have ordered the fried rice. How can you mess up on fried rice unless you cook it soggy? A couple of bites and I was done eating. Service was great by the guys working here. It's raining, decided to get pho for lunch. Usually I go to Pho Cao Da, but my brother recommended this place (Boy, was he right). The broth is favorable, and authentic. You get a lot for you money. I've got to give a quick update and ask for some feedback from anyone else who cares. So, let's take a second to talk about the spring rolls here. Are they getting bigger? The last two times I've ordered them they've been about a third bigger than usual. I'm not complaining but am simply wondering if I'm getting a little love from the kitchen or if this is happening across the board. Either way, delicious! The way I do it is to take some of the Sriacha, mix it in with the peanut sauce, a few dabs of the chili paste and dip away... you won't be disappointed. Once you've polished off the spring rolls take the remainder of the dipping sauce and stir it into your chicken broth and your pho experience will never be the same. Don't even bother calling to order to go. Especially weekends or holidays, no one pick ups the phone. And if n wen they do the person can hardly speak or understand to take ur order. Came here again after over 2 years. This is a great family seafood restaurant, offering both Chinese and Vietnamese styled food. My Fave Relative loves Pho Tai, no onions, so she got that and there was hella rice noodles in there, which she loves but couldn't finish! Usually she is digging for noodle bits, but not here. Cheap too, at $5.25! I ordered Hu Tieu, seeing that seafood is their specialty. They have about a dozen, plus another have dozen Ap Chao, or fried (sort of like Chow Mein, Pad Thai, or Yakisoba in their respective cultures). They offer both the "wet" and "dry" type Hu Tieu, and either in rice or egg (Mi) noodles. I asked for dry, which is served sort of like Bun (vermicelli) but all in one bowl and the broth on the side. After tasting it, and added some broth, I asked for more broth. The Hu Tieu was chock full of 2 scored squid bodies, 3 fish balls, 4 shrimp de-tailed, 3 crab meat strips, and several slices of Jambon ham, plus all the veggies and seasonings. It was really good. Service was excellent, as our waiter was friendly, spoke English, and was very attentive, unlike many other Chinese or Vietnamese places. This place is popular, with Asians and Non-Asians, for good food at reasonable prices. Yes, this restaurant is as good as it gets! I have been going to this place for 3 years now. FOOD There is a wide selection on the menu, ranging from traditional Vietnamese to Thai to Chinese food. Everything I tried here was delectable, e.g. their egg rolls, the vermicelli noodles (with or without soup), the soup rice noodles, the pho, etc. SERVICE You would be seated quickly and they would work hard for achieving efficiency in everything - taking your orders, bringing out your food, busing the tables, etc. Sometimes I felt like it was understaffed on weekends, but their efficiency kept the wait bearable. Some servers were nice, some were rude. But if they get the job done, I don't care! I still tip them well for their hard work. AMBIANCE It's like a large dining hall with very tall ceilings and hard floors, so you can imagine it could get a bit loud in there. My friend and I wondered how the hell they got the huge TV up there. You see it then you'll know what I'm talking about... It's definitely good for large groups as they have a few large tables that can sit more than 10 people. Good place to be noisy with your friends! PRICE Very reasonable. Checked it out for the first time and wow, unassuming on the outside but spacious and nice wall art on the inside. The menu is EXTENSIVE (just lots of little variations on particular dishes but hey, I like having choices). My man and I both got round rice noodle dishes - the shredded pork and shrimp, but he got his shrimp wrapped in bean curd skin. Mine (the shrimp) was okay char-grilled, but the shrimp in bean curd skin was delicious. The bowls themselves were huge, and came with fish sauce and this incredible creamy coconut sauce that I'll be craving until the next time I go there. Pork itself seemed a bit dry, but adding the sauces and mixing everything up, the food was great in its entirety, well priced for the amount, and very filling. Yep...I love Saigon...it is a perfect place to go on a cold, rainy day and get a big bowl of pho or noodles....the large menu makes it easy to go often without ever getting bored. Keep in mind, this is not a fancy place...at all, but the food is delicious. I love the noodle bowls with eggrolls and the spring roll appetizer that is filled with fresh basil...and super fragrant! Service is quick and not terribly friendly, which is pretty typical and expected. Tea and water came when we asked for it. They have a page of House Specialties which don't sound too good to me, but my brother seemed to enjoy ordering curried frog. I love how this place is always packed and you can find families happily enjoying dinner at 11:00 on a Saturday night. You know a good Vietnamese restaurant when you have antiquated giant TV screens mounted onto the side of the walls and speakers for karaoke. The decor definitely screams Asian. I ordered Bun Bo Hue. The broth for that particular noodle soup was really rich in flavor. Also, we ordered the spring rolls with shrimp and pork. Even that was really good as well. Although the restaurant looked dirty, the Vietnamese food was excellent. The waiters were all over the place analogous to the Road Runner running from one table to another. I've tried many Pho restaurants but this particular one did not stand out to me. I was quite disappointed. I trust some peoples comments and recommendations but this time around was a FAIL. There's a large parking area so don't need to worry about parking. The facility itself is large. There are two large TVs (old school style) on the wall close to the ceiling. Hmm not sure why it's there if they show games or something. Really 80' look. A lot of room to move around and very large tables. The waiter was very courteous and smiling. Now for the food. The Tai Pho is not that good. The broth seemed to be chicken rather than beef broth. Not tasty at all. We did however order the egg rolls. That I must say was delicious. Very reasonable prices. Came here for Mother's Day. First thing I noticed, the parking lot, looked like a back alley complete with a dumpster and trash littered everywhere. The spots were abnormally small (for SUV owners, it's comparable to forcing a spring roll through a keyhole) but we luckily found a big, wide, open space next to the dumpster and back entrance. Let's skip over the monotonous process of looking through the menu and ordering and fast-forward to the food. I don't know the exact names of the food so I'll just briefly describe what we ordered: -Some sort of seafood chow fun. Big fan of these flat rice noodles. The portions were large, the vegetables were covered in delicious sauce and it was decently priced. -Mixed seafood soup with rice and egg noodles. My dad pretty much orders this thing every time we come here. It's sort of like pho but with wontons, imitation crab, squid, shrimp, rice noodles and egg noodles. -Deep fried duck. Can't comment on it because I didn't try it. But it definitely looked and smelled good. Maybe worth a try if you're into that sort of stuff. -Three-color bean. Sort of like halo-halo minus the yucky jack fruit and plus soft, sweet beans. Worth a shot condensed milk is your thing. Kind of annoying trying to fish out the beans in such a tall, narrow glass though. Especially if the ice is still blocky and thick. Service. Definitely one of their weakest links in this establishment. It took almost 20 minutes just for a waiter to take our orders and it took more than 25 minutes to get our food. And when they did bring our food out, they brought the soup first and the rest of the food didn't come until the soup was already cold... the service left a bad taste in my mouth but I'll just chalk it up to the Mother's Day rush and being understaffed. The check never came so we had to go to the front desk and ask for it. A minor inconvenience but it would be nice to get some sort of notice that that's what we're supposed to do instead of sitting around for another 30 minutes waiting for the check to come. Overall, the food was gratifying but the service and experience was not. Maybe try coming here when it's not busy..like on a tuesday morning....if you're already in the area. I also love the fact that they add fresh mint in their fresh spring rolls. When I go elsewhere for fresh spring rolls, I'm almost always disappointed in the size and taste. I'll come here just to order these. I have eaten their pho, fried spring rolls and combos with vermicelli noodles. Their portions are huge, fresh and tasty. Also, the prices are pretty decent. I can get my vermicelli noodles w/grilled beef and fried spring rolls with an order of fresh spring rolls for about $11. This will last me 2 meals. Service is attentive and good. Last time I came here, I ordered to go and they took about 35 mins for my order. I was getting irritated but they kept thanking me for being patient so my irritation quickly went away. Looking over their menu can take a few minutes on trying to decide what authentic dish to try. Their portions are Huge! expect to eat a big meal or have left over! Down the line of reading every type of noodles that they served i found my craving for Noodles and order the 'Curry Goat with Egg noodle soup'. It was Very delicious! The Goat meat is very tender and the skin is cooked to a chewy perfection! The Curry is very tasteful as well. To me, the meat did not seem gamy at all, but my partner said it was. I was very torn between four stars and five stars for this place, and here's why: Everything on the menu is four star, but nothing is five. I know that seems simple, but here's why it's not: Most Vietnamese places have one five-star dish, and everything else is three. A place will have amazing goi cuon (summer rolls), but mediocre cha gio (spring rolls). One place will have amazing banh xeo, but everything else is weak. Another will have the best pho ever, but don't even think about ordering their bun. You could get a five-star version of each if you drive all over town, or you can get four-star versions of everything in one place. THAT'S why it's always packed. If you're looking for just one thing, go to the place that specializes. But if, like most of us, you aren't eating alone, aren't ordering just one thing off of the menu, the sum is greater than its parts because everything is above average here! Except the koi tank. Wow, one of my first yelp reviews ever needs an update. Since the last time I reviewed Saigon, I've tried pho at other Vietnamese restaurants such as Pho Ca Dao and Pho Hiep & Grill. Simply put, Saigon doesn't make the best pho, but still decent. I'm still keeping my four star review because Saigon's menu is still extensive as ever with dishes and drinks worth ordering. You can't go wrong with their Chinese style dishes. Plus, Saigon is comfortable enough (not comfortable, period) to seat a good-sized group of people, unlike at other Vietnamese eateries. The Chashu fried rice is really tasty if you're looking for fried rice. Their rice noodles are also delicious, I prefer the seafood with vegetables with rice noodles. Service here, could be good, could be bad. This place fills up fast on the weekend nights so get here early. There's one waiter that can fully understand your needs, the others, well you can always hope. Sometimes you'll get your water filled up more than 3 times, sometimes it won't get refilled at all. I have included a photo. You get a huge plate of perfectly cooked noodles with strips of fried tofu, green onions, and peanuts on top. It also comes with another huge plate of lettuce, mint, sprouts, and fresh fruit and vegetables (it varies, but can include pineapple, cucumber, carrots, jicama, etc.). FOOD: They offer a large variety of choices from appetizers, rice plates, noodles, soups, vegetarian, beef, chicken, pork, etc. Through my personal experience here throughout the years, I would prefer their dry plates over their soups (pho, bun bo hue, etc). because their noodle soups are often times very bland and unpleasing. But their rice plates and noodle plates are quite impressive. My all time favorite dish is Banh Hoi Chao Tom Nem Nuong (Grilled meat with shrimp cakes and fine rice noodles) $10.95 For those of you who has never tried "Banh Hoi", you are missing out ! It is basically fine rice noodles that are attached together to make them similar to a pancake. Then you eat it with assorted meat, veggies (lettuce, cucumber, pineapple, bean sprouts, etc) and top it off with "nuoc mam" (mixed fish sauce). It is DELICIOUS !! Try it out ! I have been going to Saigon ever since it opened - and because it is nearly in my neighborhood, I've been a regular here. All of their food is good, and their menu is so extensive that it would take a month's worth of visits to try every single item. Their fish is incredible, their shrimps, their noodle dishes, all of them are amazing. I'd give 5 stars for their food. But I digress. I am really, REALLY getting very tired of their terrible service. Over the years I have befriended different waiters over the years and they were always friendly and conversational. But even then, the service was very slow, and almost always the food will come at different times, appetizers came last, and some dishes were served immediately and others were not brought out until the early dishes were almost gone. If everyone ordered their own food instead of sharing, you would not be getting your food at the same time. It never fails. It is hit or miss. But LATELY the waiters we have gotten have been just awful. Rude, and they go out of their way to ignore you. There are basically two types of people working the floor. There are the waiters who take your order. Then there are the guys who bring out the food, and half the time they don't even know who ordered what. Tonight I felt like bitch slapping our waiter. He is a young tall guy with a 12 year old face. He gave our eggrolls to a table who came in much later than we did. Then I had to remind them that we ordered eggrolls, and this is after one of us got their order. They look at their customers with such disdain, as if we are such a huge inconvenience to them. Food here is decent, there is a wider selection than most Vietnamese restaurants. Fried rice is pretty good. The thing I hate is that they have really bad service. I mean, who stops entry to the restaurant 20 minutes before the set closing time? Bad business sense. I used to go to High School across the street and used to think this place was the bomb! I have since become more of a connoisseur of pho or xe lua, and after coming back for the first time in over 15 years, I found this spot to be just average. Dont get me wrong, I still like the place. This was my first Pho spot ever. But it doesnt quite have the wow factor I thought I remembered. I dont think the location is as bad as my fellow yelpers make it out to be. Whatever other people think about the neighborhood matters not to me. This is home. I feel safer here than anywhere in the world. Dont let the yuppies dissaude you. There is plenty of parking, and if it IS full, use your imagination. I came in to the familiar smell of fish and pho. The waiters didnt notice me at first, but when another party came in, and I didnt sit with them, they realized the error, apologized and ushered me to a great seat by the fishies. Ordered the #1 like I should. It came out quick. It is quite good and all, but quite brothy, which didnt have as much flavor as I am currently used to. No beef balls. Only a strand of tripe. Plenty of tendon though. Only 2 pieces of tendon? LOTS of noodle. I usually eat it with a combination of sriracha and hoisin sauce. But there was no hoisin sauce. It was hoisin paste. Not too bad though. I really needed salt and chili oil to flavor the broth up a bit. They didnt skimp on the vegetables and leaves, thats for sure. I also ordered fried eggrolls. They give you 6 well portioned eggrolls for I think $4.50. But they didnt taste that great. I ate half of them with the delicious sweet & sour sauce. I gave the rest to a cousin of mine the next day, and she swore up and down they were the best! I guess that would be a matter of taste. I had Iced Tea, which was horrible. Im starting to think thats a Viet thing, either that or they are brewing tea with old coffee. Ugh. I did have to flag someone down for more water, but an employee on his break eating HIS dinner got up twice to wait on me. Besides that, everyone was friendly. I come here mostly for nostalgia. I'm now retired but have ordered food deliveries from this restaurant... Always satisfactory. I think Saigon offers one of the best Vietnamese crepes around. This one of my three most favorite Vietnamese restaurants in all of San Diego County (the other two being Pho Cow Cali and Phoung Trang 2)! This restaurant stands out from the crowd because it serves dishes beyond typical Vietnamese entrees such as pho and broken rice that you can find at any Vietnamese restaurants. The menu offers a rich array of seafood dishes (they have a tank containing live seafood) and entrees that many Vietnamese culinary enthusiast may have never had or seen. FOOD I had the ROUND RICE NOODLE WITH CHAR GRILLED BATTERED SHRIMP AND PORK served with coconut milk and fish sauce (Banh Tam); the dish was AMAZING! As my first time having this dish, I was blown away. The coconut milk and fish sauce stirred together with my noodles created a unique synergy of fresh sweetness from the coconut milk and slightly sour saltiness from the fish sauce. The meats were both seasoned and marinated to perfection and grilled until they were crisp golden brown. The vegetables were fresh and very green. The vibrant colors of each component of the dish created a beautiful presentation; the strong aromas of the basil, coconut milk, grilled meats, and fish sauce can cause anyone to salivate. By looking around at my food and other dishes in the restaurant, I would have to say that the serving sizes are very generous. My dish filled me up, but not to an uncomfortable level. SERVICE The service was not great, but not terrible... typical service you would experience at any Vietnamese restaurant. AMBIANCE I grew up in San Diego with this restaurant--when I was living in City Heights as a child, I would come to this restaurant almost weekly for my pho fix. Today was my first time returning to this restaurant after nearly a 5 year hiatus. All of the decor and ambiance of this restaurant has remained the same over the years, giving me a great sense of comfort that certain memories of my childhood remain unchanged and intact. My dad especially likes this restaurant because it reminds him of his life in Saigon because even though the restaurant interior is simple and old, it feels distinctly Vietnamese. Vietnamese landscape murals line the upper portion of the walls and light Vietnamese music plays in the background. There is a giant fish tank towards the end of one room and a large Buddhist altar at the cashier bench. OVERALL I highly recommend this restaurant if you want to experience authentic and/or new Vietnamese dishes. The pricing is like any other Vietnamese restaurant, but the quality and serving sizes are impressive. Although the interior and furniture of this restaurant may feel slightly outdated, the restaurant itself offers a sense of timelessness of the Vietnamese immigrant experience, especially in the changing City Heights. I just want to say that after 13 years since the last time we were here, nothing much has changed! The wallpaper, the layout, the huge round tables with lollipops on top that greet you as you open their front door, after getting through the blast of air curtain I must say it felt like 2004 all over again lol! This is not a knock but a pleasant memory trigger of our delicious memory here! And the most pleasant thing that did not change since then was the delicious entreés that they dish out! We lunched on their House Fried Rice, Pork Spareribs with Pepper and Garlic, and Garlic Shrimp and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Matter of fact they were so delicious that we felt sad going back to L.A. and face the fact we will not find one there that taste this good! I always knew since way back when the wait for food is hella long. But for them to not even pick up to accommodate phone orders. SMH. What was super annoying was when I walked in, no memus were available on the little cart, so I had asked a server (young scrawny looking twig) if I can get one from his hands, he threw it on the little cart &told me they're right there. When his punk ass could've handed me one! Erk my nerves when people in hospitality or customer service occupations don't know how to deal with people in the correct manner. &no, language barrier was not an issue, cause he sure understood my "WTF. We love coming here! The service can be kinda slow. You always have to wait for your take out even if you call it in. Servers can be smart assy but they're always nice and have a smile. We don't get anything new here we know what's good. Must get the hot and sour soup with pork. It's so good I would say best soup on the planet. And get the shrimp and pork salad. One of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. Frankly, I am not a fan of their pho. For some reason I never really like their broth. With that said, they have some of the most extensive menus compared to most Vietnamese restaurants. I've been coming here for more than 10 years and I rarely dine in. My absolute favorite dish is their Mongolian beef. I love that stuff man. The portions are amazing, I can normally eat it for multiple meals. Other than that, I remember loving all of their fried rice and broken rice plates. You cannot go wrong with any of those choices. Another reason why I frequent this place so much is because of the lack of good Chinese food places in San Diego. Saigon is my go-to place whenever I want my Chinese food fix. It reminds me of Chinese restaurants in sf. Service is normally slow but that has been my experience with most older Asian establishments--subpar service. Still, their food is top notch. So I suggest you put their number in your phone and just phone in your order. Oh, and don't forget to try their Mongolian beef, its freaking delicious! read more
