I would have never thought this because it seems as though pho and banh xeo are their most poplar dishes. So if you ever feel like wanting to change up your usual order, I highly suggest trying their bun bo hue. Customer service here is pretty much on point, food comes out at a reasonable speed depending on the dish ordered, plus don't be surprise, if there is a wait time to get a table since they seem to always be busy.

I usually avoid the area because finding a spot can be a headache, but Phuong Trang has a large parking lot that makes stopping by so much easier. I came in for a quick takeout lunch. One thing to know before you go is they don't accept Apple Pay, so make sure to bring a physical card or cash. The staff was incredibly welcoming. They greeted me when I walked in, gave me plenty of time to look over the menu, and never made me feel rushed. That kind of hospitality really stood out. I ordered the Char-Grilled Beef Vermicelli and the Shrimp, Pork & Jellyfish Salad. The salad comes with shredded green papaya, celery, cucumber, carrots, shrimp, pork, jellyfish strips, fresh mint, crushed peanuts, and shrimp chips.The salad was refreshing with plenty of shrimp and jellyfish throughout. I especially liked the crunch from the green papaya. My only complaint was that the dressing felt a little one dimensional. I wish it had a little more brightness to bring out the fresh herbs and vegetables. It was still enjoyable, though. The Char-Grilled Beef Vermicelli was my favorite of the two. It came with vermicelli noodles, fresh herbs, pickled daikon and carrots, crushed peanuts, plus five grilled beef rolls wrapped around scallions. The beef had a delicious smoky flavor from the grill. The only downside was that the inside of the rolls was a little chewy since it didn't get the same char as the outside. Even so, every bite was packed with flavor, so it wasn't enough to take away from the dish. Between the friendly service, quick turnaround for takeout, and solid food, I can see why Phuong Trang has stayed so popular for all these years. I'd happily come back and keep working my way through their menu.

Food wasn't quite as good as I remember. We had fresh spring rolls, beef stir fry noodle dish, large pho, egg roll and grilled pork bun and wonton noodle soup. Main entrees were all about $17 and decent portion. I like Chinese style wonton noodles and beef stir fry noodles better--I feel Vietnamese style can be a bit sweet.

We family-styled everything which is honestly the way to go so everybody can try a little of everything! It was majority of our party's first time dining there. We started off with some drinks, I got the Non-alcoholic Guava Mocktail and I got to try what was the equivalent to an espresso martini too. Definitely liked the guava drink better because it tasted like guava nectar juice (kind of like Kerns or Jumex). The Expresso Martini had fresh mint in it and it tasted earthy which wasn't my cup of tea. For food we started off with the Heirloom Tomato Salad which was DELICIOUS!! I don't know what they put in the Vietnamese Green Goddess (probably fish sauce since all the dishes basically had this) but it was magnificent and one of my favorite dishes of the night. Then the Scallops and the Black Cod came out. The Scallops came in a set of 3 and we cut them in half so we could all have a taste. The sauce on this was DIVINE!!! It was citrusy but still really flavorful bursting with umami. I'm literally starting to drool reminiscing about it xD We wanted to keep it to use on other dishes because it was so good. The Black Cod was also delicious. It had fried skin attached and a sesame soy glaze. Next up came the Beef Tartare and the Wagyu Steak. The Beef Tartare was probably the least flavorful out of everything we ordered, but it was still well seasoned. My friend said it was really spicy but it might have just been her bite because I didn't think it was spicy at all. I like that the give you the option of leafy greens or shrimp chips to eat it with. The Wagyu though, was an all-star dish. It was the crowd favorite for sure, we all enjoyed not only the steak but the picked baby eggplants that come with it, and the sauce was phenomenal!! Lastly came the Dry Aged Duck which is what they're known for. It was definitely the biggest fish out of all. You were able to eat the duck with two different sauces, one they called a "Fish Sauce Chimichurri" and "Vietnamese XO sauce" which is more so satay. My friends liked the XO sauce but I liked the Chimichurri better. They had actually forgotten about the side of Buttered Rice but I was told it was incredibly flavorful on its own so we still asked for it. It had more than just butter in it, there was dried shrimp and sesame seeds, and it was made with coconut milk or something because it had a sweet but savory taste to it. I saved some of my duck and Wagyu to eat with it which was actually pretty good. Overall I liked that they brought out the dishes from lightest to heaviest and especially after they brought out out 2 sides of Buttered Rice we were all satisfied and full. It was the perfect amount of food. Honestly EVERY dish was different but amazingly dank and I think it's the fish sauce in everything. They were also sweet and kept the cake we brought in the fridge, placed the candles on it for us, and even after we sang they cut the cake for us!! 10/10 would recommend coming here for not only the food but the impeccable service!! I have been craving a meal of goi cuon, cha gio and cafe sua da (salad rolls, egg rolls and vietnamese iced coffee) since I had a bad experience at Goi Cuon in Hillcrest (that review is also posted on Yelp) To find this, I decided I was going to drive down El cajon Blvd and try every place I could find. (My usual place had recently had some quality issues so I have been expanding my search). I grade places on food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. The food was great. The salad rolls were huge, twice the size of normal and were well wrapped with great fillings. The peanut sauce was delicious. The Cha Gio were also really big. And crunchy! and delicious! They basically ran them to me right out of the fryer! The fish sauce they came with was spicier than usual which I loved) The Cafe Sua Da came to me already brewed and mixed. It was great but a little weaker than I am used to. The restaurant was large with ample parking and very clean. This is a big space with 20+ tables. If you like to be warm sit as far from the kitchen as possible for cooler tables suit to the left and near the kitchen as that is where the A/C is. I went on one of San Diego's rare very hot days and was very comfortable. The service was great. I had a busser and a waiter. Both made sure that I was taken care of. I drink a lot of water and they never let my glass get empty. To put this in perspective, I drank about 8 full glasses of water during the meal. Atmosphere: I went during the day so it was quiet, I can see this place being fun and loud when busy. Even though I am continuing my quest down El Cajon Blvd. I will be back to this place again! I wanted to give Saigon Restaurant another chance after a previous disappointing visit, hoping for a better experience. Unfortunately, my visit today did not meet expectations, in both food quality and customer service. I ordered the Pho Ap Chao, looking forward to a dish of crispy fried noodles. After waiting for 15 minutes, the dish was served, but the noodles were not crispy at all--instead, they were cold and appeared to be straight from a bag, just mixed with some stir-fried vegetables. More concerning was the shrimp, which smelled spoiled, suggesting it had been left out too long. I pointed these issues out to the server, who was indifferent and insisted that this was the norm at their restaurant. I emphasized that while I might tolerate an undelicious dish, serving potentially spoiled food is unacceptable. This experience was worrying enough for me to consider notifying the Health Department, as I wouldn't want anyone else to fall ill due to their food safety practices. I caution anyone considering dining here--your health might be at risk from the spoiled food being served. read more

I have always heard about this place and wanted to check it out. I took my mom as I needed to take a break away from work and was starving. The place is a large open room with lots of tables. We were just missing the lunch hour which was good for us. The waiter immediately had his hand raised in the air to tell us that a table was ready for us. I liked that. Being that I have only had Pho one time before at another Vietnamese Restaurant, I wanted to try it again. I got the large combination beef soup which came with several types of beef. My mom got the smaller one. I was expecting a long wait, but it was out quicker than expected. A large side garnishing of mint and sprouts came.Lots of beef and noodles. Tasted fresh. It was absolutely delicious and more than I could eat. I had enough to take home for a second meal..... Nice... The staff was attentive as well. Came here for dinner with my gf. The food was alright; we got the spring rolls, crispy intestine, Mongolian beef. The spring rolls are huge, but their sauce was a little bit watered down. The crispy intestine was good. The Mongolian beef was ok, nothing special and super greasy. The service there is pretty bad. One of the waiter came and took our orders and he started to yell at us, wasn't sure if that's the way he normally talk. And another old waiter came and retook our orders and he looked very annoyed, wasn't sure what was wrong. All in all this place has a lot of choices of food and most of their food are ok, but they need to improve on the service. read more

Had a bowl of Chicken Pho.... Pho King is still my favorite. It was kind of dark and grungey in there. Reasonable service at a reasonable pace. Like most pho places the guys don't speak very good English. The chicken in the pho was amazing...still had the skins on which I'm not sure if that's why the chicken was so tender. Different reviewers mentioned different places having different broths. My palette isn't so developed as to be able to differentiate. Like most other places you can "hot rod" your pho by adding japenos, hot sauce, that brown sauce etc. Was able to get outta there for less then tn bucks including tip, very reasonable prices. read more

My fiancee and I usually go once a month and the service is ok for the most part, but yesterday mothers day we really dislike the service. It was Horrible, we waited 50 min for our food. Other people whom came before us were eating already, I got up to the front desk and complained and they didn't CARE at all... NEVER GOING BACK... the food is great, but it the service is Horrible the food will not taste the same, knowing that you've got mad before eating. Saigon was my introduction to Vietnamese food. If you want Pho, there are twenty places down the street better than Saigon. But, if you are looking for a lot of variety and yummy food, I recommend Saigon. The egg rolls are among the best I have tried and the house special fried rice is great. The staff is friendly, but sometimes slow when the restaurant is busy. If you are a newbe to Vietnamese food, Saigon is your place, but if you want a little more quality, there are a couple other restaurants I would recommend. read more

Talk about bad service... this is the one I have the worst experience with. They greated you nicely at the door, but after you seated down, night mare starting to happen. They rush me and my friends into order, but after we ordered, the food did not come out until 25 minutes later. Im only giving 4 stars because the food was really good in the fried rice to me was the best and the vermicelli noodle soup was awesome if I can get stars on food and separate stars on service service Their Stars would be one or half possibly I mean there's is working tables can be with a family of four and you're waiting over 40 minutes for some soup and some rice. I always get the same thing when I go here. The veggie pho with no mushrooms. I always tell myself to I am going try something new but it is so good I just can't. It's loaded with veggies and the noodles are not too soft. I have been to Vietnam and besides there this is the best pho I have had. I have tried most places in town. I will excuse the 1980s big screen TVs and the sketchy neighborhood and give this place 5 stars. Just do yourself a favor and try the pho. you will not be disappointed read more

Agree with Laurel T on the service and the pho and Clarie G. on the fortune cookies. The pho is that good. You can also tell by the crowd who frequents the place... those for whom this restaurant serves their home-country cuisine, this is a must-visit place. Location can be a little tricky (it comes up quick and you have to be ready to turn). Be sure to bring the map your first time. I noticed a review that read the service wasn't all that great because "the guys didn't crack a smile." As a graduate student in INTERCULTURAL RELATIONS, be advised that it is only in the US where strangers SMILE at eachother. Go to any other country, especially Asia, as a stranger and foreigner and try and SMILE at people. The waiters are awesome if you get to know them. Wow... Where do I start. This place sucks. The food sucks, the service sucks. The servers are eating mouths full while serving your food. It took 3 guys to get my order right...and it took 45 mins to come out. Don't waste your time going there. Oh and they had some channel on their TVs showing a surgical procedure WTF. I came back about 30 minutes later, and they told me my order was almost ready. However, I noticed two new dine-in tables had already received their food. That was frustrating, so I sat down and waited another 10-15 minutes. I finally asked, "Where is my food? I may need to cancel the order if it isn't ready because I have a baby waiting in the car and I need to leave." She said, "No, no, no," ran to the kitchen, brought out my order, and apologized. I don't think I will be coming back because of the poor service. It felt like my takeout order was pushed aside and made after the dine-in orders, even though I had already been waiting. The worst part was the fish fillet with salt and pepper. It was not what I expected at all. The pieces were extremely thin and covered in a heavy coating. I honestly could not accept that this was the dish being served. I would like to know what Chinese restaurant normally prepares fish fillet this way. I also had the feeling that the order was rushed after I complained, which made the experience even worse. I hope the restaurant understands what happened and takes the time to respond to this review.

When the cashier came over, I jokingly asked if our server had gone on break or gone home. She smiled and asked what was wrong, so I had to point to the drink on the menu because my Vietnamese has really gone downhill. My tones and pronunciation probably give them a headache. The soup was also much saltier than I remember, and that's saying something because I usually love salty food. The chanh muoi was really refreshing and was probably my favorite part of the meal. I'm not sure I'll be coming back anytime soon, though.
