Tofu Banh Mi
Steve A.

Cool place that could be the best stall in the French Market. It's certainly not the cheapest though. Saigon Sisters has the street style Vietnamese. Banh mi and other handhelds. The prices are kind of high for the portions, but not unusual for stuff in the rest of the market it seems. After getting here before our train, we came here to eat. It's one of the places that opens pretty early, so it's good if getting something for later. This is one of the stalls friendly for vegetarians. Okay prices on most items. There's a pretty good variety. Each of us got the Tofu Banh Mi. It's about $10 for a sandwich. Crispy bread but that changed fast. Kind of small but it was okay. This came with cilantro, cucumbers, daikon, jalapeños, red peppers, and sesame seeds. Had a bit of a spice to it. This certainly wasn't the best banh mi. Kind of soggy bun made it a bit of a bummer. The price made it seem worse to be real about it. Basically it's an okay stop if you need a quick bite. It's still not giving you what you pay for. The food from this place isn't the best and for the price you may not like it, but there's good things such as the spice though.

I got the classic banh mi and a bag bun with the BBQ jackfruit. The banh mi was great. I hadn't had one before, so can't really compare, but I enjoyed it a lot. The bao bun was alright, but the BBQ flavor sort of overwhelmed everything else inside

Wish I could give 0 zeros. Their vegetarian option was not substantial. Mostly rice with a little bit of tofu. I should have known when it came out in under 45 seconds. When I asked to exchange for a bahn mi, they refused to exchange and were very rude when I asked. That's a bummer too because I've gone here over the years and raved about the pho to people. I will be telling everyone to avoid this place now.

Just Stir Fry Noodles Chicken Curry

I came to the French Market location of this restaurant during lunch. I ordered the stir fry noodle bowl with curry chicken. Unfortunately I did not enjoy this meal. The noodles were extremely sweet and the chicken was dry. I was expecting the curry chicken to have curry sauce. Nor was there an immense amount of flavor you would expect in a curry dish. The service was below average. I was not greeted when I stepped up to the counter. Instead the woman just stared at me until I indicated what I wanted. It is a decent size lunch portion and has a nice presentation but unfortunately was not appetizing.

Vegetarian rice vermicelli noodles for $7

Don't eat here. I went to the one at French Market. Service = terrible. She took my order but didn't understand me... I can understand language barriers but I don't understand rude. She just disregarded anything I said with a mean attitude. I am not even entitled with customer service but she was just simply harsh and didn't care what you said. Maybe find someone who is a bit more patient and nice and who speaks English fluently for orders? I got my vegetarian $7 rice vermicelli noodle and was starving afterwards. It came with a sliver of rice noodles and a small number of veges. It was in a small flat plastic container and I definitely was not happy with starving after the meal. Maybe the physical restaurant is better?

Really fast preparation for a delicious sandwich! Dark meat chicken and a lovely yellow curry sauce on a soft baguette. Would recommend! Convenient spot for food before or after taking Metra.

Banh Mi - Curry Chicken

Visited the French Market hoping to find some gems. Always love a good banh mi as they are hard to find. Had a craving for curry as well so ordered the curry chicken banh mi trying to kill two birds with one stone. Not bad but underwhelming. Was hoping the bread would make be spot on being there early in the day around 10:30am before the lunch rush but it was average. Not as airy and light as I had hoped. Crust was flaky and crisp but I've had better. Filling itself on the lighter side. The pickled carrots and daikon are shaved I think for a quick pickling - I'm a fan when they are thin cut so they provide a crunch factor as well. Solid effort but I'd want more attention to detail for that price.

The Porky

I remember seeing Saigon Sisters in the French Market for the first time and beeing so excited. If you feel kind of done with fast food, remember, savory, sweet, spicy, and fresh veggie Vietnamese flavor combos are available. Just bob and weave your way through the lunch crowd and grab some bánh bao or maybe order a bowl your way. For a place that has to deal with sudden lines, they move pretty fast considering what you will be eating. Everything is pretty decent. I love the minty shrimp spring rolls. I've had better pho but it serves a necessary, warming, revitalizing purpose during Chi town winters so I'll undoubtedly get it again. Remember, its take out pho. Tired of the same ol sammys, they have interesting bánh mì flavors. I've only had Classic and Porky so far. Not bad. I will be trying the curry chicken and bbq jackfruit soon. Buns, bowls, spring rolls are my usuals. Glad this place is here.

Shrimp chips. Watch out for seasoning - very spicy if you don't like lots of spice don't get them. If you like spice go for it

Tried the rice vermicelli noodles with tofu. The tofu was good however the salad had little lettuce and little noodles. Too many pickled vegetables which over powered the salad. Nuoc Cham dressing was decent. The shrimp chips were good but the spice they put on was very spicy.

I have eaten both in restaurant and lots of take out. I love their boas and spicy ribs. The Thai ice tea is also quite delicious.

Delicious casual vegan meal. Had a short few hours in Chicago and came here for dinner. Wife and I…read moreeach got an appetizer-I got their buffalo drum sticks which were somehow gluten free and delicious. For my entree, I got the bimbibab or however you spell it, with tofu. Would have liked a meat alternative but other than those drumsticks, which are brought in frozen and premade and therefore, the "meat" cannot be used in an entree-only the tofu was gluten free. Although I mixed in tamari and sirahcha, this was delicious. The hot pit crisped the rice perfectly and the veggies and tofu were cooked really well. We also got their raw berry cheese cake and a scoop of soy vanilla ice cream for dessert. The crust of the cheesecake wasn't really good but everything else was excellent. Service was great with a lot of good suggestions and he was very friendly. The place isn't much to describe. Just a very casual interior with an Alice in wonderland motif. Cute, but not a place you come for the ambiance. You come for the food and service.

I do not care for the bbq sauce, it has a sharp bite at the end and no sweetness like bbq sauce. The Kung Pao Ding; for the sauce I was expecting a slightly tangy flavor with maybe a little heat but it was not that. The sauce feels sticky, thick, and the flavor is flat. The protein tasted over cooked to me. I also ordered a couple drinks that I've never tried before to test them out. The flavored water tastes like there's stevia in it, a weird after taste. The cardamom grape was not as sweet as I was hoping, and a very faint flavor. It's very possible I just chose the wrong items for my taste buds. But these were my first impressions on this order.

The food was amazing. We got the "frychos" which were like loaded fries and it was the probably one of the most flavorful and fun vegan dishes I've ever had. Ofc we also had to get the vegan deep dish and it was also really good. Since we were the only ones there we chatted quite a bit with the bartender and he was super friendly. We ended up putting a movie on the bar tv and watching that while we ate. They also had boardgames and free pinball and we played battleship while waiting for our pizza. If you have the chance to check this place out, you definitely should!! The bartender said they were usually busier because it's also a concert venue, but it was a nice day so we think people were going places they could eat outside. But quiet or hoppin this place would be an 11/10! :)

My partner got a sour beer, and a chicken parm sandwich with French fries. He reported his was also very thick / dense.

Lincoln Ave., and between the menu and the name (yes, the elephant caught my attention), I knew I had to check it out. There's plenty of street parking in the area, I went on a Sunday, so meters were free. The interior is bright, green, and inviting, with lots of seating and great natural light coming in from the front windows. There's also outdoor seating, but it was a bit too cold the day we went, so we stayed inside. Service is counter-style, and the staff was very knowledgeable about the menu. It's fairly simple, but still fun and satisfying. I ordered an Impossible burger, tater tots, and a strawberry almond milk smoothie. My friend got fries, so I was able to try both. After over 40 days without fried food, I was especially excited for the tots and they did not disappoint. Overall, the food was good and solid across the board. Nothing that completely blew me away, but definitely satisfying. If you're vegan or vegetarian and craving a classic burger experience, this is a great option. The smoothie was good as well, though I personally prefer fruit-forward smoothies with lighter juices, so the almond milk base wasn't quite my favorite, but it still complemented the meal nicely. Overall, if you're looking for a casual sit-down spot with a cute atmosphere and a solid Impossible burger at a reasonable price, Elephant + Vine is a great choice. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
