I had never been along the stretch of Lake Street past Clinton before, so I ventured with my boyfriend one day last week. This place caught our eye - it's located in the first floor gallery of the CTA headquarters building near DesPlaines and Lake. The decor is modern and appealing, and the atmosphere (at lunch time) is quiet and cozy - good for conversation. This place does an amazing Bahn Mi. I'm no expert - it's actually only the second time I've had a Bahn Mi (the first being in San Francisco about 5 years ago). However, I like to consider myself an experienced diner when it comes to Asian and fusion restaurants, and in that respect, this place satisfies me to the fullest. The lunch menu is slightly less expensive than the majority of restaurants in the Loop/West Loop area. Your average lunch is gonna run you under $10. The dinner menu looked really interesting - I'm undoubtedly going to return some evening to check it out. I got the Sun Tanned Cow Bahn Mi, and my boyfriend got the Classic one. I can't decide which was better. The pork on the Classic was ridiculously tender, and the pate was delicious as well. My Bahn Mi was exactly what I was looking for - the slight coconut and lime leaf flavors complemented the beef perfectly. In both cases, the bread was fresh and well portioned in relation to the amount of ingredients inside. We also ordered one Bahn Bao just to try it. We got the glazed pork belly one. Very cute and tasty. Loved the small novelty size and the ingredients were great, as well. For only $2.50, it made a great mini-appetizer for our lunch. The total was under $20 for both of us, and the server was bubbly and helpful, so we did not have a problem tipping her generously. I'll definitely have to try the dinner soon. I don't go to the French Market often, but felt like taking a peak at thier offerings. I got thier Pho Banh Mi and was disappointed at the quality of the food. The sandwich itself was $10, which would be acceptable if it was amazing, but it literally tasted like a canned meat sandwich. Also, the portions we're tiny. I could have gotten a tastier sub for half the price at either, Potbelly's, Subway or Jimmy John's. I've had many Vietnamese sandwitches before and none tasted like this. read more

The PHO is excellent but my favorite sandwich is the pork belly. The sandwiches come on a very soft French roll but depending on the sandwich you get it can be a bit dry. Pork belly was very juicy and saucy so it complimented the French roll very well. If you are ever under the weather get the Chicken PHO. Superior to chicken noodle soup and superior to the beef PHO which is not as flavorful and does not absorb the broth as well. read more

The restaurant is a small chain but the loop location is the best.... Their is not one item on the menu not worth ordering. Best items to order: 1. Beef pho and oxtail noodle soup. 2. Saigon Sisters is underwhelming. I'd heard that their V.B.Q. was worth a visit, but it was overpriced ($8) and unsatisfying. The sandwich's beef & bbq sauce had a nice smokey flavor, but the sandwich as a whole wasn't anything special. The next time I'm at Chicago's French Market, which is actually a great place for a lunch break, especially when the weather outside is bad, I'm going to eat at one of the many other restaurants the venue has to offer. read more

This was the WORST Vietnamese food I've ever had in my life. Scratch that, make that the WORST FOOD I've had ever. I guess they're still around due to location and the general lack of knowledge of the ppl in the area, but goodness, it was just a train wreck. They had a duck noodle special, which looked delicious on the menu, but tasted like crap. The noodles were mushy, like they'd been boiled in water that hasn't been changed and it was overly salty. It was almost inedible. I stopped after 3 bites - and that's 3 bites of a $15 entree. I went with 2 other ppl who both disliked their choices as well. Save your money and don't come here, you'll have a better meal with Chinatown, Argyle or cup o' noodles. read more

I'm a frequent lunch customer, and always order the beef pho. Lately the quality/quantity has really suffered. I've started ordering mine with "extra noodles" just so the bowl isn't half empty. Why couldn't they fill the bowl up with more broth? Also - they provide approximately 6 bean sprouts, and 1 shriveled old basil leaf. Restaurants on Argyle are charging less for 3X the amount of (better) pho. PLEASE review the serving size....I guarantee you will garner more repeat customers. Thank you! read more

I've eaten here several times, and had two different Bahn Mi sandwiches. The Classic, which is "Vietnamese Pork, American Ham, and French Country Pate." and The Porky, which is "Braised Duroc Pork Belly, pho flavors, and hoisin sauce." At $7 each, a great lunch deal in the West Loop. The Classic I picked up on my way to catching a flight out of Midway. The bread was a little stale and the sandwich was kind of dry, but I really liked the flavors, so I gave Saigon Sisters another try a few weeks later. This time around I ordered The Porky. It was the greatest pork sandwich I've ever had. EVER. Even If I could speak 15 languages I wouldn't be able to communicate the greatness that is The Porky. If I was on Death Row, this would be my choice for my last meal. Add a whole bunch of Siracha and you'll be in heaven, I promise. I would (and have) gone way they heck out of my way to get to Ogilvie to grab one of these sandwiches to go. Soooo good. Oh, and the staff is really helpful and friendly. Go here! You'll thank me! Saigon Sisters may be the best thing about Chicago French Market, especially if you are a fan of the Banh Mi sandwich. Not only does Saigon Sisters make a great traditional Banh Mi with pâté schmeared on great crusty French bread piled high with ham and studded with traditional veg, cilantro and chilies, they offer several twists on the same. Saigon Sisters. Bringing a bit of diversity to the drab, fast food lunch scene in the Loop. I'm glad that the French Market finally opened, and that Saigon Sisters are here. With banh mi, i have only tried the Classic. Pork, ham, and pate. Tender pork, salty ham, then a smear of buttery-textured goodness only liver can provide. The veggies provide a nice contrast to the meat. Yes, the portion is a little small, and price is perhaps a tad higher compared to other well-known sandwich operations. I have also tried both summer rolls on different occasions. Perfect lighter lunch when the situation calls for such. Great crunch overall. What i like about Vietnamese food is the texture sensation happening as you bite into the food. The tofu in the veggie roll is nicely seasoned. Oftentimes, in a dish with tofu, it is usually left as is, and it's up to the sauce to do the work. Here, they took care to season it separately. Nice touch. Also just heard that they have found a spot on Lake St and a real restaurant is in the works. Good news. Why 3 stars? They definitely bring a bit of freshness to lunch options in the Loop. Value for price i would agree nothing beats going up to Argyle. But this is a weekday lunch, and i'm even lucky to get out from the office. So give banh mi a chance. When you're in the mood for bahn mi and pho, this place just hits the spot dead on, every single time. Pork belly and the classic are our fave banh mi options. We live close to Ogilvie station so we've been to this location a few times, and the people who work there are just so gosh darn friendly -- that adds so much to the value of a meal these days, in my opinion (did I just sound too much like I'm in my 30s?) I hesitate to give it 5 stars only because they don't have vietnamese hot coffee at this location, which I'm fairly addicted to from their Northwestern location. read more

Tried the pork banh mi. Ingredients are fresh. The baguette was lightly toasted but I prefer it to be a little bit more toasty. It was a good authentic vietnamese sandwich. This is the kind of sandwich that should be eaten right away, otherwise the baguette may get a bit soggy on my train ride home. So no problems, I ate it straight away and boarded the later train :-). My one complaint is that they seem to run out of stuff late in the afternoon. I am more than likely to drop by after work. Both times I have been there around 6pm and they were out of the summer rolls. I hope in the future they are better stocked for us latecomers. Come on 6pm is not that late. But it is their first week and they are still working out the kinks, so I will be back. Don't expect Argyle Street prices, this is located in the Loop after all. I think their prices are comparable to other gourmet sandwich shops in the Loop. UPDATE: Bumping up to 4 stars. Been back several times and they have since added new sandwiches to the menu: Frenchman (Duck Confit), Meatball and Sun Tanned Cowboy (short ribs braised in coconut kaffir lime). Yummy. read more

It seems that I may have ordered the wrong item at Saigon Sisters and that's part of the reason why I'm giving it three stars. Aside from Out the Door, I haven't seen Vietnamese sandwiches for the same price as a bowl of pho ($8). Wanting some noodles and soup, I ordered the beef pho. The bowl of noodles came in a small plastic bowl and the key word here is small. There weren't a lot of meat in the bowl, a few pieces of beef and beef ball but no brisket, tripe, or much else to warrant the $8 especially since it was a small bowl with mediocre tasting noodles. The sandwiches on the other end looked enticing; wagyu beef, candied kumquats, coconut braised beef, duck confit, and much more. The next time I return to Chicago I'll make a note to try their sandwiches and avoid the noodle soup. read more

We checked out the new location on W. Lake Street, a cute little spot on a Friday night. We had the bao appetizer (wagu beef, pork belly, caramelized chicken) which was ok, the pork belly & egg rice, pho, and special ramen (udon, 5-10 egg (really a soft boiled egg), fish cake, and mushrooms), followed by the che dessert. Was really underwhelmed by the dessert (coconut milk rice cream, butternut squash, peanuts) which came out as a mini rectangular pudding square (think panna cotta) over a shmear of coconur rice cream. I thought "carmelized" hell yes!!!! but it just was not good, it was too sweet and left a terrible taste in my mouth. Not to mention I pulled gristle out of my teeth twice. I realize this might happen, but twice in one sandwich? Sorry, go to the french market, and go to Fumaré, stay away from here. I ordered a bunch of food before I caught my train back to the suburbs and checked the yelp reviews while my food was being prepared (instead of before I ordered). I think the prior reviews are dead on that this is a 3 star place. Food was prepared quickly. The veggie spring rolls were the highlight. They were super fresh even though they came from the case. The chicken curry was just ok. The teriyaki tofu was just ok. The pho was ok but I could see ordering on a cold winters night and adding lots of hot sauce. For my Friday French Market treat last week, I tried the Hen House banh mi here at Saigon Sisters, and I was veeery happy about it! The chicken - I believe it's dark meat - was juicy and well seasoned. Pickled ginger gave great flavor, and you definitely get a kick from the jalapenos! Baguette is very flaky and crusty on the outside but soft inside. Definitely fills you up but didn't feel like "too much," you know? Only complaint is the price! At about $7, it's not expensive, but banh mi are tradtionally pretty cheap and this one is not. I'm going to guess that's because it's pretty good quality (and because it's at the French market....) I'd love to come back for more sandwiches, or the pho! read more

This was the first place I've tried a bahn mi sandwich and it was so good! I can't believed I've always missed out. I got the VBQ sandwich and it was quite tasty!! I orginally went here to get pho and shrimp roll which they ran out--which is a bummer because they say they normally run out in the morning and I went at night for dinner!
