My husband and I went to Sajj last night (Saturday, December 19th) around 6pm to pick up some dinner. The lady who helped us was extremely rude and made sure we got small amounts of the requested toppings. I was shocked because normally the employees at Sajj are super nice and happy to help you. Food is good but never ever had good service here - it's always terrible. Can't order kids meals here for my kids without getting questioned or harassed by the workers. What is their deal? Many times I come in and they don't even acknowledge you in line and they just keep making the online orders instead of helping customers in the store! Holy cow. I was in there around 7:30 this evening and there were 2 people working who were obviously overwhelmed. And the customers were absolutely terrible- complaining about everything, asking for "extra" everything, yelling at the employees, etc. I felt so bad for these employees who were trying to do their best given how busy they were. I just wanted to get on here to say that the customers tonight sucked and I felt so bad for these employees. Manager should know that they were so obviously trying and doing their best and the entitled customers were terrrrrible. So this place is essentially chipotle with Mediterranean food. Two of my favorite things smashed together into one delicious fast casual restaurant. We came here yesterday right around 12:30 and it was absolutely packed. Easy to understand why after you eat their food. The give you the option to take your chicken shawarma, beef shawarma, falafel or shawafel (chicken or beef with falafel). Then you choose if you want a rice bowl, salad bowl, pita or wrap. I of course chose the salad bowl because I am trying to be healthy these days They you add all the fixings like eggplant, cauliflower, cucumber mixture, feta or avocado (extra $) and a whole bunch of delicious sauces. I personally was a fan of the tzatziki and the garlic sauce followed by that bomb cilantro mint sauce they have past the pay station. This place has such a cool concept approach to Mediterranean food, which is clearly why they are so successful. Flavors were on point and they give you a lot of food. I love the concept of tailoring your bowl or wrap to your specifications - while you watch. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma bowl with rice, cauliflower, cucumber, tomatoes, onions, hummus, tahini sauce, and tzatziki. In retrospect, I should have asked for all the sauces on the side because since everything was mixed in together, it ended up being a bowl of indiscernible mush. I was able to separate some of the sauces and still managed to enjoy the food. Lesson learned. Unfortunately, there was not a lot of chicken in my bowl. :( They need to kick up the portion on that, please. All the food tasted fresh maybe because they source their meats and veggies from local farms in Half Moon Bay, Petaluma, and Brentwood. Nice. I liked how they had more than just sodas to drink. They offered Tamarind, Strawberry Lemonade, and a Mint Lemonade. You also get a free bowl of soup with every order. I think it's some sort of green lentil soup. I have been in love with there food ever since I originally found them at Santana row in Santa Clara mall. I was very sad when they left. The food was fresh, crispy green leaves and tasty chicken. I got the swarmafel in the a bowl with salad. Too much salad and hard to mix due to bowl full of food. I love the pea soup that came with it which was pretty hot. Someone might tell you "it's the Mediterranean Chipotle." OK yes technically you can customize your own bowl, but it's so so much more than that. I got the falafel bowl with pita on the side and was pretty blown away. The falafel is unreal - crunchy and flavorful. Add ons like eggplant, cauliflower, beets, cabbage, cucumber are so much better than what most Med joints offer. The hummus is good, the garlic sauce is pretty solid and the pita is fresh. I shared the bowl with a friend and we were stuffed. The pita chips as an add on was $1 and really good. The baklava is also stellar. I can't believe how good this was coming from what appeared to be a chain in a strip mall. We had a bowl, pita chips, baklava and spent $11 between 2 of us and we were stuffed. Each pack is $29.95 and comes with warm pitas, hummus, tzaziki, falafel, rice, sauces, and your choice of meat - chicken shawarma (thigh) or beef ($5 extra). If you're a vegetarian, you can also substitute the chicken for cauliflower or eggplant for free. Each pack is supposed to serve 4 people, so we got 3 sets for 14 adults, and we still ended up with leftovers. I tried to order ahead through the app ($10 credit for every $100 you spend), but the app would not process my credit card since apparently it has a $100 limit, and my order was just a few dollars over after tax was added. The guy working at the counter was very friendly and tried to churn out our order quickly since I ended up having to order at the counter. App credit card payment/online ordering issues aside, everyone was really happy with the food, and it was a really reasonably priced way to feed a lot of people. read more

I love Sajj so much! I realize there's a "fast food" feel to it, but I crave this place all the time. Anytime I'm in the area (1-2 a month), I ALWAYS hit up this location. While I've never visited any other Sajj's in the area, my company regularly has this catered from somewhere in San Mateo. I typically order the bowls with greens and chicken. The melding of flavors makes it even more amazing. I'm not a fan of the soups, but I'll eat them. I've never had an issue with service at this place either. read more

I'm pretty surprised at how this place is so highly rated. Tried to call in a take out order, but was directed to their website. The website gives a time estimate (I think it was 25 minutes from when it was placed), but when we came to pick up, the order wasn't started. She had to put together the order as we waited, which defeats the purpose of ordering ahead. Maybe if I could have been able to order by phone, they would have actually seen the order? We ordered the steak family meal ($35), which is supposed to be food for 4. Definitely not enough food for four, and I don't think I eat large portions. It is probably more along 3 servings. There was a weird distribution of food (ie only 3 pieces of pita bread, enough rice maybe for 2 servings, but way more tzaziki and hummus than you would need). The steak shawarma was okay, but a little dry and cold. The rice was bland, and falafel was hard and also cold. The salad was literally a mixed salad you would buy from a bag at the grocery store and repackaged into their to go container. A pretty bleh meal. If you do come here, I would just buy individual meals. To top it off, I bit into a piece of plastic, which looked like some container edge had fallen into the food. read more

Superb Levantine street food style quick lunch spot! I love this place - generous with their healthy toppings, friendly staff, and quick service. Love it! I find their felafel quantity to be just right along with the toppings etc. - keeps me full all day. Any more and it would be too much. I haven't tried their meats so can't comment on that but they do look good. The cilantro sauce on the side is terrific! Fried pita is way too greasy - skip it. read more

Epitome of "fast casual" (in a good way)! I've been to their food truck before at Off the Grid, but this was my first time at their brick-and-mortar. And it was great! Service was fast and friendly, the place was clean and comfortable, and my salad was delicious. I ordered the mixed greens with chicken shawarma, and loaded it up with tons of yummy toppings: chickpeas, roasted cauliflower, roasted eggplant, hummus, garlic sauce, Israeli salad, and assorted pickled veggies. Then I topped it off with some of their spicy green cilantro sauce. And it was fabulous! I was nervous about the chicken, because I'm super picky about chicken and so often it's dry and tasteless, but this was really moist and flavorful. And everything mixed together so well. I'd definitely get that again. Unfortunately, the soup that my meal came with was pretty bad - I barely touched it. It was ostensibly lentil soup, but it was more like salty lentil-flavored water. Not a bean in sight, and super thin. I appreciate the idea of a side included in the meal, but I wish they had just skipped this one. I don't know if our server just didn't mix the pot well or what, but I wouldn't eat that again. That salad, however, was good enough to make me want to return! read more

This place is great. Loads you up with healthy calories. I usually go for the shwarma / falafel rice bowls. Online, you can only order one dollop of sauce (garlic tahini / tzatziki / hummus), but in person they're usually happy to give you all 3. They all taste great. The vegetables are awesome, from the cauliflower to the beets to the salad greens. And they load you up, to the point your container is bursting. You get free soup, I'm personally not the biggest fan but I drink it anyway (need the calories). You also get chutney. I am an enemy of cilantro in most circumstances, but their cilantro chutney offering doesn't taste half bad. Overall if it's before 9 PM, when you compare the quality of the food to fast-food offerings like In-N-Out, it is hard not to make the recommendation: your vehicle of caloric overload should take you to Sajj. read more

What is SAJJ?? well.. in simple term... this is a MEDITERRANEAN Chipotle... meaning you go up to the counter and you get to pick whether you want your meal as a ricebowl, salad bowl, wrap (like a burito but the wrap is thicker than tortilla), or pita (it's like a pocket and they stuffed stuff inside).... then you go down the assembly line telling them what protein (chicken, beef, falafel)and toppings you want.... LOTS of options for toppings from grilled eggplant, cauliflower, garbanzo to variety of pickled vegetables. Each order comes with a small bowl of lentil soup and if you check in on yelp, you get a bag of pita chips for free.. yumm yummm... The humus sauce is sooo good... and also the garlic sauce ... just don't kiss anyone after... There is always a line during meal time but it moves quickly. So far, I haven't been too impressed with the Chipotle-ification of restaurants in the this area, but Sajj may have change my mind for good. Chipotle-ification, noun: the act of turning all kinds of restaurants into Chipotle-style fast food joints with pre-made options. See: pokeLove, Pieology, Tava Indian Kitchen, etc. What makes Chipotle (and similar type restaurants) successful I think is that it has to be the kind of food where mixing all the ingredients together works, flavor-wise. You can't always keep everything separate in a rice bowl. This is where Sajj works. I love the Mediterranean flavors. The pickled veggie options (cabbage, hot peppers, cucumber/tomatoes) are complementary, not at odds with the main flavors. The strong hummus, garlic, tsaziki, and tahini sauces can be eaten with everything in the bowl. And the aromatic spices used in everything from the pita chips to the pomegranate chicken mean that the flavor doesn't just come from sauces. In short, with the Mediterranean options at Sajj, the flavors are enhanced or complementary when all the ingredients inevitably get mixed together. This makes the concept successful. Sajj not only gets the flavors right, but I was impressed with everything else as well. The prices are kept at sub-$10, there are enough options that you can make enough different combinations to not get bored (but not so many the line moves intolerably slow, I'm looking at you pokeLove!), and they give you a ridiculously large amount of food. It's a busy plaza for parking sometimes, but if that's the biggest worry I think they're doing pretty well. My only regret is that I waited so long to go. One of my new regular favorites! :) P.S. Come here weekly, and tonight the staff has been extremely rude not to account for having to continue to repeat items and still get it wrong. When I corrected them telling them that I didn't want an item they just grabbed it by hand and removed it (one bowl was a vegetarian bowl that had chicken added then removed by hand!) when I corrected the girl making the bowl they guy at the counter was more focused on telling me what I can and can't have or do! Never coming here again; lost a weekly customer with the staff you guys have. I love everything about this place! From the friendly staff and quality service, to the ease of ordering and delicious food options, you're guaranteed to have a great experience at Sajj. I visited for the first time last week with my boyfriend and our friends and the owner/manager treated us like family. He went out of his way to make sure we tried the entrees, sides, dessert, and drinks - everything that they had to offer. Thank you again, Mr. Kardashian :) I was blown away by the flavors, especially in the Chicken Shawarma rice bowl. Mine included Tomato & Cucumber, Cauliflower, Tzatziki, Pickled Cabbage, and Spicy Tahini Sauce. The chicken was juicy and well seasoned and the cauliflower tasted like roasted awesomeness! Everything else in the bowl complimented it very well. I had a side of their falafel and it was by far the best I've ever had. If I wasn't full from everything else I would have ordered more. I don't know what they did to the falafel and cauliflower to make them taste that good, but if I was forced to be a vegetarian eating those two items is the only way I could survive. The baklava tasted like someone's old family recipe - it was an honor and a privilege to try it. Sweet, flaky layers of honey-drenched goodness. The mint lemonade was refreshing and so was the tamarind. I have yet to try the mint yogurt but it looks interesting. Basically, it's like ordering a burrito bowl and chipotle but it is middle eastern, and wayyyy more delicious (and significantly healthier). Welcome to the mid-2010's, where yet another Chipotle-Model-Following-Chain (CMFC) is open for business. If present trends continue, every restaurant in the U.S. will follow this model by 2023* Unlike some other cuisines, the CMFC system works well for Mediterranean food, which involves plenty of toppings, veggies and sauces that all complement each other. Sajj does a decent job with this model, offering four configurations: rice bowl, wrap, pita, or a salad with different proteins: falafel, chicken, steak, or shawafel (shwarma + falafel). The ingredients seemed high-quality and the toppings were nicely done. My meals here so far: -- Pomegranate chicken rice bowl: (9-ish dollars without drink) Pretty good for the price. I asked the server if this was "fesenjan" (my favorite Persian dish), and he said "yes." This turned out to be a lie, but it was still pretty good; tender chicken with a light pomegranate spicing (no sauce to speak of). With added hummus and a few toppings, this was a satisfying meal overall. Still, I was wishing I had a small slice of pita to scoop up the hummus and juices. (No option for this without extra cost). 4 stars. -- Falafel wrap: ($7.50) Three large falafel balls, one sauce, toppings and veggies all swaddled in lavash. The falafel was surprisingly warm and moist for something that came out of a bin. It had a pleasant, nutty flavor as well. Still the overall wrap was a little on the dry side. 3.5 stars; a six on the falafel scale. -- Shawafel: (9ish dollars) The chicken shwarma was nothing special, and once again the falafel was better than expected for something not made to order. Too bad I can't get this with the pomegranate chicken instead. 3.5 stars. So in short, 4 stars (when rounding up).
