Absolutely WOW is the only thing I can say! I'm currently eating my lunch here, but I just couldn't wait to write the review. My eyes are rolling back with every bite, I swear. The epitome of FRESH. Since it was my first time here, I didn't know what to expect. I arrived right before lunch on a Tuesday - around 11:45 - and thankfully there was no line. Only a few people ahead of me, but the service was so incredibly fast. I ordered a rice bowl with steak shawarma, chickpeas, cauliflower, garlic spread, tomato and cucumber salad, arugula, onions, feta, and spicy tahini sauce. I also asked for a side of soup, and it's complimentary! One downside: I think it's a bit annoying that feta is an extra $1. I get avocado being extra, but seriously, feta!? A huge ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine shouldn't be extra in my opinion. Ugh, worth it though so I'll keep paying. Back to the amazingness -- each bite is seriously just packed with fresh, full flavors. The onions? Crunchy and seasoned. The tomato and cucumber salad? Classically fresh. The cauliflower? A hearty addition. The steak shawarma? OH. MY. Succulent!! Plus, the service was incredible. The woman who greeted me was so cheery and welcoming, asking me about my day and making sure to tell me that almost all toppings were complimentary, and no limits. The interior is beautifully designed with some sweet looking plants to make it comfortable. I took mine to go, but it looked like there was plenty of seating. Right before walking out I grabbed some extra sauce that they have on the table with forks and napkins. They have something that's spicy and a cilantro chutney. Even with getting the spicy tahini, my bowl wasn't hot at all. There's definitely room to make this super spicy if you want or not at all. There's another great mediterranean place in San Mateo called Hummus, which was my favorite until now...I mean, support local business and still visit Hummus to decide for yourself (they have more fish options), but for me, Sajj blows them out of the water. read more

VEGAN REVIEW! This very well may be my new favorite / go-to spot in San Mateo. The ease of ordering, variety of toppings and friendly service alongside how tasty everything was has me over the moon. I ordered a falafel rice bowl (since I wanted to pile on toppings) with hummus, cauliflower, garbanzo beans, eggplant, sumac onions, cherry peppers, pickles, cucumber and cabbage. All that topped off with spicy tahini and a side of pita, I was in heaven! SAJJ definitely has the convenience and casual vibe of a Chipotle but with the quality and freshness the latter tends to lack. Everything was delicious, but the hummus and falafel were definitely the stars for me, especially with their hot sauce on top and pita for dipping. Overall, SAJJ is an affordable, quick and delicious lunch or casual dinner option. My meal came to $11.15 for the bowl, pita and lentil soup (included with the meal) and I personally have enough for a light dinner or snack leftover. I've been here quite a few times and I do like the food here. What really bothers me about this place is the inconsistency with the amount of fillings that they serve. The person doing my pita pocket today was outrageously cheap and basically gave me no more than a small tablespoonful of the chicken sharwma. I didn't say anything cuz I didn't wanna sound greedy but when I got home I really regret it cuz I had so little meat that all I could taste was the veggies and fixings. They really odd to use a scale so that they can at least give a consistent amount each time. As an example, the person last week was great and gave plentiful but today it's was simply horrendous. The other reviewer nailed it when she said that this is like The Mediterranean version of Chipotle! You can either do a bowl or wrap, and fill it with whatever you like. I love being able to choose as many toppings as you want (cheese & avocado are extra $). This is such a great place to get a healthy lunch. Even the salads are substantial and equate to more than one meal! I got a salad bowl with chicken shawarma, pickles, beets, sumac cauliflower, eggplant, chickpeas, tzatziki, tomato/cucumber mix, hummus, and garlic sauce. The amalgam was huge and absolutely delicious. The cauliflower and eggplant stood out as the tastier salad additions. A whole scoop of garlic sauce, however, was overpowering. This is the Chipotle of Mediterranean food and going to get a lot of hate for it, think it's a lot better than Chipotle in quality and quantity. My regular order is a salad bowl, with all 3 types of salad mix and just about every option available. This thing is so packed full of veggies. It's hearty, taste good, and will leave you full for hours. The order comes with a cup of lentil soup which is really good too. Proteins. I honestly can't tell much difference between the chicken or pomegrante chicken while in the salad. There is so much going on already in the bowl, it's hard to tell which one I selected. Yep. Mediterranean Chipotle and it is absolutely brilliant. It is priced a little higher than Chipotle, but with the variety of ingredients, and the quality and quantity of the food, it is worth the $10-$11. I don't think there is anything here that you can go wrong with, but my absolute favorite are the pomegranate chicken, cauliflower and eggplant sides, and the rice. Every time I come, I mix it up with the toppings. They have a lot of choices (most of which are included in the price of the bowl), and I like to load up on the toppings. Tip: if you are a student, show them your ID. You get an entree, a bowl of soup (which comes automatically with your entree regardless), a drink, and a side of hummus and pita chips. I really like the food here and the fact that they offer keto friendly food. But I had issues with the service. One time I ordered a keto bowl and paid for extra chicken. The bowl can with chick peas (not keto) and no extra chicken. Another time I went here, the staff didn't seem to know what a keto bowl was even though it is on their menu on the counter. The beef shawarma kinda smelled weird and really only had old beef and maybe a pickle? Where was the fun stuff inside and why did the beef taste so old? It was a day we hadn't factored in dinner on the Peninsula, so a quick Yelp search for Meditteranean options led us to SAJJ. Steak shawarma rice bowl (First timers get $5.00 off credit) When my coworker went to pick up her food also ordered through the app at the same time I had her pick mine up. When she got there they said someone already picked up my food? they just opened with no other customers in the restaurant waiting. "The driver already picked it up. I won't make it again" my coworker called me while in the restaurant to let me know what happened and I spoke to the rude lady on the phone and said, "how is that possible? Did they have a receipt? How did they know my name?" The employee there said, "okay I will make another. I don't know what happened" My coworker asks her to remake it just like hers since we ordered the same thing. The employee rushes everything and my coworker asked for eggplant but the said, "No that's not included" but normal is free to add in. My coworker leaves and heads back to drop off my food. I open the bowl and they're missing the spicy sauce and chili peppers I asked for. My coworkers bowl had it. The bowl portion size was skimpy and small compared to past 3 times if been there but first time using their app. I hope this employee shapes up and improves her customer service skills and phone skills because I recommended SAJJ to a bunch of my coworkers because of the tasty food but today's experience made a impact on my coworker and I. I hope this was just a fluke and doesn't happen again. I've been wanting to try this new Mediterranean place since it opens. And I finally went in with my daughter yesterday. I ordered a falafel rice bowl & my daughter had a beef bowl. The portion was ok for $11 & they give you a cup of soup with ur meal which is pretty tasty. HOWEVER, the falafel was a big disappointment for me !! It was so tough to chew, it's very dry and not much flavor to it. I had much much better falafels before & this one is nowhere close. Was recommended by a friend to come try Sajj, especially for their student meal deal for $8. Food was pretty good, fresh and healthy. But in my recent visit the customer service was not pleasing at all. The servers weren't the nicest, but not something that bothered me all that much. When I walked up to the cashier and told her I was a student, she took a very long time examining my student ID, as if it were fake. She looked at me in disgusted and pointed to the tiny fine print of the issue date on my ID and claimed that it was expired. I explained to her that it was just the date my ID was issued, and she rolled her eyes as she changed the price of my meal in utter disgust. I can understand if they'd would like to make sure the ID is valid on the student deal, but there is no need to be so rude about it. After all that, she didn't even include the hummus and chips with my meal, and I had to ask for my drink cup. I'd love to come back to Sajj, but my poor experience with that cashier has since deterred me from coming back. I hope that if I do decide to come back that my experience will be much better. read more

What a great addition to downtown San Mateo. This place is where the old Chipotle was on the corner of 3rd and B. Sajj is soooo much better. Everything is fresh and authentic. The hummus is super yummy, very creamy, the falafel are freshly made, the other ingredients are super fresh as well. I had some cucumbers and tomatoes with my pita shawarma - awesome. The best is that you get a super yummy lentil soup with your main dish. The general manager in the store was super friendly and helpful (I forget her name - sorry), she told me that they cater as well - I'll definitely use them for my next party! read more

I have found a new favorite! I have ventured into some Mediterranean food throughout the bay area but even though this place is a bit styled like fast food, it is my favorite! it kind of looks like a Chipotle where you have to pick little things from each menu to go in a whole set up. I did the falafel and shawarma bowl with rice and all of the fixings. Everything was very generous and extremely delicious! All the sauces are completely worth it and make sure to get all of them! It will leave you with some fragrant breathe, so probably not the best choice to take a hot date ;-) I decided to try Halal guys a few days ago for the first time to compare the two, which turned out to be a big mistake! So low-carb or keto dieters beware! But the garlic spread tastes amazing, very garlicky and fluffly in texture. It's awesome mixed in as a salad dressing. The meats are well seasoned and are not over-dry which makes for decent bites. They also offer falafel, pomegranate chicken, and steak in forms of pita, rice bowl, or salad. I finally step in to try SAJJ today. I was intrigued about the food. I was greeted with a friendly staff. Yes it's right next door to Halal guys but you really can't compare the food you're getting because you have so many more options with Sajj. It's essentially a mediterranean style of Chipotle. I can't name all that many chain restaurants that I love, but Sajj is definitely one of them!! Indeed, I'd be content eating here multiple times a week, and that's saying a lot coming from me! I love their salad bowls (but you can also get rice bowls, a pita wrap, or a sajj wrap) and their selection of proteins (the crispy falafel and tasty pomegranate chicken were fantastic). But the real reason to come here is for the huge selection of additional toppings and dips. On your salad/bowl/wrap, you can mix and match all you'd like--my favorite dips are the hummus, tzatziki, and spicy tahini, and my favorite toppings include the fried cauliflower and eggplant, the sumac onions, and the huge variety of pickles. You can also help yourself to hot sauce and cilantro sauce at the counter. Every bite of this dish is a flavor explosion!! There are so many different spices, seasonings, and textures that create a party in your mouth! And the food is healthy and high quality to boot, so you feel great after enjoying every last bite!
