Solid spot to enjoy some Japanese food in the Northwest suburbs. This spot isn't too busy and is a little hidden, so you easily drive by it without realizing it as you drive around the Milwaukee Ave area. The interior is alright, with just enough decoration to feel like a sit-in restaurant and a good amount of light coming in from the windows. The service is super fast and friendly, and you'll get served quickly on a visit here. Parking is also plentiful right outside the restaurant. For me, the food here is alright -- it's fresh though maybe not as satisfying as some other spots you could go to -- due to the seemingly healthier preparation they have on the food. That is, it's a bit lighter on sauces and unhealthy elements, instead opting for more vegetables. Depending on what you're looking for, this could be a good thing as you could probably eat here frequently and help to maintain a diet -- but if you're looking for heavily sauced sushi like what you'll find at an AYCE option, this might not be what you're looking for. Portion sizes are fairly good here and prices are fair. Overall, solid spot if you're looking for healthier Japanese food. There's just enough ambiance here -- but it's nearby a very competitive Asian food area and not exactly a standout option for flavor.

Came here for lunch, and we were seated right away. Being on such a busy road, it's pretty much a standalone shop. We ordered the lunch special of Poke which came with Miso, and it was fairly priced for the area - even would say on the lower end of price. Was $15 for a spicy tuna Poke bowl along with Miso soup. What was nice about the Poke bowl was that it had a lot of fresh salad greens surprisingly and not that overdone with rice. Also very flavorful and fresh and a generous portion. The miso soup was OK as well, nice to warm you up on a cold day. The food came out quickly and service was friendly and attentive. Definitely a great option to be in and out for lunch in under an hour!

My husband and I went to Sakae Sushi with a friend on a Thursday night. We were greeted by a very friendly server. He led us to our table and brought out waters for us quickly. Sakae Sushi is a small restaurant with lots of great decor on the walls. I ordered the fish katsu while my husband ordered the salmon poke bowl. We started with miso soup, which comes with all the entrees. The salmon bowl was good but I wish that the salmon was a little more flavorful. I wanted the fish katsu because I've never had that before, The portion of fish was huge. It also came with a California roll, steamed rice, salad, and shumi. All of my food tasted fresh and was delicious. I saw the chef leave the restaurant to smoke several times. I hope that she washed her hands upon returning to the kitchen. When we left the chef was standing at her car smoking. I highly recommend Sakae Sushi!

Sakae Sushi was just alright to me. It seemed like a solid place to get take out sushi from, but we dined in. The inside is pretty small, but it wasn't busy when we got there & we got seated right away. I really liked the spicy tuna roll we got. It was fresh and I liked that there wasn't spicy mayo on the inside. The noodles were pretty good too & the vegetarian ramen was not good. Our server was very nice about it and took it off the bill. Besides the ramen, I liked everything else about this place!!

On a Thursday evening, we were seated immediately. There were two other parties, but there were many orders for takeout. Service was very good , he offered suggestions and allowed us to take our time to review the menu. I had the teriyaki chicken , which came with rice, salad , and 4 sushi rolls. It also came with two tater tot like fish rolls, they were very good. I was expecting the chicken to be served on top of the rice, but it was separate. Not a bug deal, but I would have liked more teriyaki sauce for the rice. The chicken was very tender and the salad was fresh and I liked the dressing. My husband had the Shumae- shrimp dumplings and Spicy Shrimp Tempura Udon. The serving of Udon was very large. He enjoyed both. My daughter had a variety of sushi rolls. They were fresh. They offered miso soup with each meal, and it was ok, but not as good as our other dishes. Definately worth trying if in the area.

My son and I went here on a weeknight and we were able to get a seat easily. Sakae is located near the corner of Camp McDonald Road and Des Plaines River Road, and has a spacious parking lot. The dining area is a good size, with roughly 7 or so tables and chairs, and a TV on one wall. We ordered: Tofu Yaki Udon Stir-Fried Udon Noodles with Tofu, Vegetables & Special House Sauce. Yellow tail roll -- the typical roll with yellow tail in the middle Gold Rush 1848 roll, which had Grilled Eel, Spicy Crab & Grilled White Tuna With Avocado & Gold Flake. The gold flakes really drew my son in. Alligator Roll which had Eel & Shrimp Tempura with Crunch & Avocado Tonkotsu Ramen was the traditional ramen you expect, with creamy pork Broth, Pork Belly, Onion. The pork belly on this dish was phenomenal... so tender and flavorful. Our meals came with miso soup, which was a nice touch, especially on a cold winter evening. Service was prompt, food came out fast, and the overall experience was good. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located off to the side, near the back, the men's bathroom was single-person, although there is a urinal and a toilet. I always wondered in those situations, do I lock the door? I mean, I suppose someone is free to use the urinal while I do a #2 on the toilet? Either way, all was in working order, things were fairly clean, the sink was in working order. Decent bathroom. Sit or squat? Squat.

Salmon poke bowl... but where is the rice and salmon?

We used to frequent this spot as their sushi burrito is pretty good. Well, after today we will no longer order from here. The Salmon Poke bowl had 6 little 1/2" cubes of salmon... about 1/4 cup of rice and rest veggies. You can see after mixing the bowl... you can't even see where the rice and salmon is. Ambiance - never eaten inside. Always been carry out.

My friends have ordered take out before, but we decided to go eat at the restaurant this time. We ordered: - Miso Ramen - Playboy roll - OMG roll - Crunch Munch - California roll I'm not a huge fan of ramen in general, but I really liked the miso ramen! The noodles were legit and chewy, and the broth was subtle in flavor, soupy, and hot. I would order this again on a cold day! The playboy roll is spicy! The red sauce on top packs a little bit of heat, but the jalapeno on top...that'll burn your tongue and probably make your eyes water and nose run if you eat the whole roll. Everything about it was fresh, but it wasn't my favorite because the spice took away from the taste. The crunch munch is one of my favorite rolls because I love shrimp. It is simple and packs good flavor. And the California roll is a California roll haha. It was good, but didn't have unique flavors like the other rolls. Onto the service and atmosphere! The customer service was great, even though we did wait a bit before we got to order. There was only one waiter and she was busy looking after the rest of the 5-7 tables. She was super friendly! The atmosphere was very welcoming, cute, and clean too. Even though the restaurant is kind of small at first glance, it's actually perfect inside. Overall, I enjoyed everything and I would come back to try more ramen and other rolls. :)

Tempura mix bento and fish katsu bento boxes are delicious. Chicken teriyaki is tough and Overcooked/grilled. Same w the salmon teriyaki unfortunately.

I'm not quite sure what the high review is all about. I ordered the I love sushi meal and for $30 the fish weren't fresh and the portions were really small. I mean for $30 they could have added a little bit more since there is no salad or rice that comes with this meal. The service was ok but I'm definitely not coming back to this place. read more

New place opened up near where we live! Our first experience was great! The place is small, but we were seated right away. Great service. We ordered shrimp steamed dumplings- they were very light and tasty! For sushi we have K-2, kamikaze and playboy! All of them were spicy, which is what we liked. Great sauce for K-2 sushi. This is my daughters favorite sushi restaurant. She orders I Love Salmon plate and devours it. My wife and I have tried various dishes and all have been great although I'm starting to order Gold Rush 1848 Roll most of the time. The staff is super friendly and the place is clean. There is parking in the front and back. The place is a little small and if they keep this up, they will have to expand. Definitely worth trying! read more

Went here on a weeknight for sushi with family. The seating area is limited, but it wasn't very busy. We sat at the furthest table from the entrance which sat the 4 of us. There was just enough room at the table for the 4 of us, however the seats were quite uncomfortable. Our waitress brought us menus and water and after we had a chance to look through the menus we placed our orders. We each ordered miso soup which is 'free' as well as our sushi or entree. They had a tv on the wall streaming ChiveTV muted which was really entertaining and distracting at the same time. The sushi I ordered was good. I didnt really have any complaints except some of the rolls fell apart when I picked them up with chopsticks, some weren't rolled tight enough perhaps. Also, some pieces of the rolls were squished together a little too hard so they were hard to separate. All the ingredients tasted good and made for a good dinner. I got a spicy tuna roll, a Philadelphia roll, an Alaskan roll, and a piece of eel, salmon, and tuna nigiri. The eel nigiri was very good, as was the salmon. The tuna nigiri was fine too. The spicy tuna filling in the spicy tuna roll was less processed than at other sushi places which was a welcome change. The spice level on it was good too. I liked the Philadelphia roll as well and it cooled off my mouth from the spicy tuna. The alaskan roll was also good. Not the biggest rolls in the world, but not small either. I was definitely full afterwards. The rolls were about 7 or 8 dollars each and the nigiri were about 4 dollars each. That's comparable to what Id pay for all you can eat, but I wasnt in pain from eating too much after this . Would come back again. read more

This is my new favorite neighborhood sushi spot. It's got a cute vibe but not pretentious. For sushi I felt it was cheap compared to peers. Service was amazing and we came with a larger group of 8 and the place was full and we didn't feel like we didn't get attention. read more

This restaurant just opened in June 2021. Food served: sushi, ramen, udon, teriyaki bento boxes, katsu bento boxes, tempura bento boxes Capacity: 5 people at the sushi bar, seating for about 24 dine-in customers Take out available? Yes Covid-19 protocol: Servers wear masks; customers can take off masks while dining, anti-bacterial pumps available at each table Overall Grade: B Food: A Served fresh and perfect temperature, quality ingredients, delicious! Service: A Greeted as soon as we came in; friendly staff; right amount of pacing from taking our order, checking on us, and giving us our check in the end Ambiance: C Very loud. With wood, metal, and glass interior, sound bounces around well. When we were there, K-pop (or J-pop) music was on, and TV was tuned to "America's Funniest Home Videos". Add that to the chatter of customers and it was not much for a relaxing dinner. Frankly, the place could do without the TV. I could live with K-pop or J-pop but would be great if maybe change the music to a more relaxing Japanese instrumental music? Note: Great place for take out. I noticed a lot of take out orders while we were there. Final verdict: We will go back to eat. Hoping TV will be off this time and music will be more relaxing. The best Sushi in the area. So fresh. I didn't know how they do it, but it feels like the ocean is just around the corner. The place is small and cozy. It's super clean and the service is very great . There is plenty of parking spaces. Outside Terrace is also available, which is nice in the Summer time. Since now it's gonna be a Sushi place #1 for me! Highly recommend this place if you want to eat good quality food. read more

I was excited to see them open up in the beginning of June and they did not disappoint. My girlfriend and I came in a numerous amount of times and everything was amazing and consistent. The food, the decor, the atmosphere, the service, and the presentation were all a 11/10. They don't treat you like customers, they treat you like family. Sakae Sushi! I drove past this restaurant so many times, and I am so glad I finally stopped by and gave them my business. For this post, I got the Shimp Tempura Appetizer, OMG roll, and the Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen. I would rate them at 4.2 out of 5. Nothing much to say about the tempura. I haven't been to a Japanese restaurant that messed that up yet. I ordered the OMG roll solely based on the name, and wow did it live up to its name. It is hard to tell from the picture, but it was on fire when they served it. I typically am critical of sushi, but this roll is not bad, and I would get it again if I am not trying a different roll. Friendly and quick service. Chirashi don had a great selection of fish, all fresh. Tekka don was delicious as well, with good portion size and generous cuts of fish. K2 roll was huge -- Each piece was packed with ingredients and flavor, hard to eat in one bite, but still good. Their menu also offers free miso soup! 10/10 would come back again for a meal. read more

We ordered through Yelp but setup to pickup the order instead of delivery. When we arrived to pickup the order we decided to go in for a glass of wine as they prepared our food. The service was awesome, especially Shane, he was welcoming and gave us a little history of the place. When we got home and saw the serving of food we were amazed. My boyfriend and I were extremely satisfied with the taste of everything we ordered. Highly recommended place for sushi and ramen. read more

Came here to try the ramen and an order of sushi roll. We purchased the chicken shoyu ramen, tonkatsu ramen, crunch munch roll and shrimp shomai. Both types were just ok. The chicken was dry in my ramen. Tonkatsu ramen broth tasted very salty. Though I wasn't a fan of the ramen here I really liked the crunch munch roll. Will come back to try other sushi rolls. read more

Excellent NEW sushi restaurant within walking distance to a friend's house. We had apps of Gyoza (which were outstanding) and tasty Shumai, steamed shrimp dumplings. They both came with a herbed soy sauce that I wish was bottled and for sale. We also ordered Gold Rush and Crunch Munch Signature rolls. The Gold Rush had actual gold flakes atop, pretty but no taste to them. Both rolls were outstanding in flavor with a little kick. Also, the complimentary seaweed and tofu Miso soup to begin the meal was excellent, not too salty. The restaurant is small but very cozy. Could do without the TV. Staff are super friendly. Liquor license pending. Highly recommend. read more

One can sit at a table or the main sushi counter. The night I visited, it was rather slow which allowed staff to thoroughly wait on us. I asked a couple of questions about the menu. Our server explained that the most popular rolls were the Garlic Salmon, Mafia, and Hamachi Truffle. Most premium maki come as 8 rolls with the exception of Pink Flower and Tequila which are served as 6. All rolls are made to order with fresh ingredients. I also loved that they offered three options for veggie rolls as it's still my preference! To start, we ordered both the Lychee-tini and Old Fashioned cocktails. They couldn't have been more different in flavor profiles. The Old Fashioned was spirit forward yet smooth. It had a really nice finishing note that directly came from the Japanese Whiskey used. The Lychee-tini was sweeter and had good flavor. I also loved that there was actually a lychee at the bottom of the glass. For mains, my husband got the Mafia and Hamachi Truffle rolls per the staff's recommendation. He explained that the Mafia rolls were more of a mild heat. He preferred the Hamachi Truffle roll as it had a more unique and depth of flavor. I got the Black Garden roll without the jalapeño. I loved the freshness of the rolls and thoroughly enjoyed the veggies mixed with the sauce it had. We both agreed that all rolls tasted like they were made with premium, high quality ingredients. Once we finished, the chef came out to ask how we liked everything. Kaido's service level was amazing with staff clearing plates, refilling water, checking in on how we were doing, and just making sure we had the best dining experience. The details didn't go unnoticed and makes perfect sense why they have such an amazing Yelp score! Highly recommend visiting Kaido Sushi and looking forward to my next visit!

The customer service was awful, and the lack of communication made the situation even more frustrating. Sakae is a true gem in Prospect Heights! I stop by almost every month, and it never disappoints. The food is always amazing -- fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Everything is served so fast, but without ever compromising on quality. Whether it's sushi, sashimi, or their specials, every bite is consistently top-notch.
