We ordered the Cantonese shrimp soup (the dumplings were Chinese vegetable which were among the best we've had, and we know great Chinese and Cantonese food. The sushi - especially the salmon, and futomaki - was the best we ever had, even better than in Japan where we returned from two weeks ago and even better than the homemade futomaki made by the Japanese grandmothers in our Buddhist church. My feedback regarding an order I placed yesterday evening. Unfortunately, we found the quality of the meal to be subpar, especially considering that the prices are higher than other local restaurants. While we enjoyed the chicken wings and the crab rangoons (after reheating them in our air fryer to get them crisp), the rest of the meal was disappointing. The shrimp and broccoli was dry and tasteless, leaving nothing to flavor the dry rice. Additionally, the boneless spare ribs were burnt and very hard to chew. Given the cost, we expected a much higher quality of food. I hope management reads this. read more

I was so surprised ... embarrassingly so. When my family members wanted to have some sushi and I made the turn towards Sakana I was asked if I eat here frequently. I said ... no, it's been years. What a mistake ... I have now been back within 2 weeks of that first visit because everything was so good. The first visit's focus was on the Japanese side of the menu but on the return visit it was Chinese all the way ordering some of the same dishes that have been ordered for years at Sakana ... actually decades. I need to emphasize that looks can be deceiving!!! The outward appearance of Sakana creates a perception that this restaurant is not open or if it is ... well, drive by. That would be a huge mistake!!! And, when you walk in ... don't let appearances food you. It's true that the dining area takes you back in time and needs a Robert Irvine makeover but frankly are you heading out to eat Asian food for the splashy fountains, lacquered walls, and mahogany booths? No ... you want good eats and that's what you are going to get at Sakana with plenty for the normal eater to take home the next day's lunch. Service is warm and welcoming! Smiles and conversation (If you choose to engage in some.). Yes, they do a lot of take-out so be understanding of that focus of their business ... those take-out's allow those of us who enjoy eating in to enjoy some delicious food! The tablecloths are clean but obviously have survived generations of washing ... but the welcoming bowl of edamame saves you $5-$10 off a typical bill at other places. FREE and perfectly yummy!!! Believe me our fingers were all over those green pods!!! On sushi night we couldn't help but notice how fresh the food was, which really matters. And, I was nosy so I checked the knife cuts which were precise ... no torn seafood at Sakana's! Soup was tasty ... we were happy!! On Chinese night ... the Hot and Sour soup absolutely pleased both of us. Smooth with the right blend of flavors and full of those special ingredients that sometimes are left out at other locations. Even though I was hungry, there was enough of my shredded pork dish to take home and it was lunch the next day. I will no longer make the mistake of not being a regular. I am curious now about the Thai choices on the menu!! Definitely coming back and my family has told me more than one time now that I should be embarrassed that I have not been a regular customer of Sakana's because their food is sooo good plus the service makes you feel appreciated! read more

Ate there last night. Ordered Thai food for the first time . Pad Thai, so sorry to report when I started chewing the noodles I thought a zip tie was accidentally among the noodles.... they were undercooked. I had some of the chicken, but every time I got noodles there was another clear almost plastic one I had to remove with my napkin and hand. Love this restaurant, but will never order Thai here again. What a great lunch deal! We visited for a late Sunday lunch while on a road trip. It was great! We all got the lunch specials, which include soup, rice, and your main. The hot and sour soup was amazing! Really rich and delicious. The pork wonton soup was also really good. I got the moo goo gai pan, and it was pretty basic but yummy, as was the pork fried rice. My friends got sushi and really liked it. Service was fast and helpful. Overall, a really good option if you're looking for something more nutritious and delicious while driving through! read more

I have been MANY times. But I feel compelled to write a review after yesterday's horrible experience. The server (always the same one) has always been sour and seems put off by a simple request for a napkin. Well, yesterday a 4" long black hair appeared on my table. It took 15 minutes (I was the only person dining) to get a water refill, more sauce and a napkin, which arrived stained. He was eating in the other part of the dining room. The owner saw me looking around as I clearly needed something but he never approached me. As I checked out I took the owner the hair on the dirty napkin. Let's just say, don't judge a book by its cover! From the outside, Sakana looks a little questionable but the food is quite tasty. As usual, we tried a few things from the menu. As a starter, we got the fried dumplings. We were pretty amazed by how delicious the sauce for the dumplings were. An "Asian style balsamic" is what my boyfriends roommate referred to it as. Pretty spot on description. Just such a tasty combo. We chose three sushi rolls from the menu. The fish was deliciously fresh across the board. My only complaint was the mushy rice. Seems like it was over cooked and just too soft to enjoy. The general taos chicken combination was so yummy. We couldn't stop talking about the amazing flavors. Too full to eat it with my meal, I saved my egg roll for the next day. Maybe it's because it was a day old, but it just didn't do it for me. Surrounded by Dollar Stores, fast food, Goodwill, and lots of crumbling weedy pavement sits this rather unassuming, slightly scary looking original diner car. It's not much to look at, and definitely not in a high -end kind of town. Hiding inside this lithe place is some pretty darn good Chinese, Japanese and Thai food. It's proof that you should not always judge a book by its' cover. This is one of the Queen Mother and the Patriarch's favorite S. Jersey places, though they only know it as "The Chinese Diner on 45". They are not big on names, those two. They, Faithful Dining Companion and I headed over there for an early dinner. We were greeted and seated promptly. The place has a lot of the feel of the old diner it once was, with stainless steel and recessed ceiling lighting. There are booths and also tables, and around the side they have built an addition that has larger tables for groups oaf 6 or 8 or more. Drink orders were taken quickly. One order was for iced tea, and we were asked "Sweet or unsweet?" What? In Jersey? Oh, could it be? So, sweet was ordered. A can of Lipton with lemon was delivered with a glass full of ice. *sigh* There is a difference between 'sweetened' and 'sweet', people. Orders were then promptly taken, and we had a variety - one Miso Soup (also very good), one Cold Noodle Salad (awesome), one order of steamed dumplings (OK) along with a ginger salad (meh) were produced first. Then, entrees - one Pad Thai (very good), one General Tso's (very good), one steamed chicken and vegetables (someone is on Weight Watchers) and one Cashew Chicken (good, if slightly overdone). On the whole, very good food. Service was uneven. At some times plates were cleared promptly and water refilled, then at other times glasses went empty and plates sat. We seemed to have 1 3/4 servers, which was a little confusing. Overall, a solid 4 star place, a bright spot in a sea of boring chain food. We'll be back. read more

Just saying...we went here a few weeks ago and we're the only people dining in. The food was great and the staff was attentive. We went back tonight and we were 1 out of 4 tables eating in. They were more concerned about their take out biz than us. Our appetizers came after the meal and sashimi was delivered frozen. When we complained, the owner took it back and I swear he put it in the microwave. The fish was watery and the ginger was warm. I complained and he did give us a $20 credit. I have been meaning to come here for a long time. I finally made it for lunch on a weekday, and I'm glad I did -- my lunch was very good. Some reviewers seem to take issue with Sakana's ambiance. Like the area that surrounds it, the building and decor are a bit rundown and outdated. So what? It's not dirty. It's just not fancy. In my mind, that stuff should only stand out in a review if it's really good or really bad. This is right in the middle: clean and adequate. The staff wear shirts and ties, and their manner seems to match their more formal attire. They were very matter-of-fact, efficient, and prompt. That's fine with me, I'm there to eat, not to find a new best friend. Whenever I try a new place, I get a spicy tuna roll to use as an apples-to-apples comparison of other restaurants. Sakana's spicy tuna was the best I've had in ages. Fresh, flavorful, and just the right amount of spice. I also got a ginger salad, which was good enough, but nothing special, and a salmon roll which was very good, but overshadowed by the tuna. I will absolutely be back. read more

First time trying this restaurant, excellent food and good delivery experience. I've been looking for local places on Grub Hub with Tempura (just been having a craving), and a couple of other places have disappointed. Not the case here! The Shrimp Tempura was excellent, nice delicate coating, the veggies with it were perfectly cooked -- batter golden brown but still crisp. Probably the best fried rice of any of our local Asian places. All of the rest of the dishes we ordered were equally good with great flavor. We'll definitely order from Sakana Oriental again (and maybe one day, actually get to eat in the restaurant). Definitely recommended. read more
