Usually our favorite uptown go-to but today was pretty awful. It started when we asked for outdoor seating for 6 and were told parties of more than 4 cannot sit outside. Now we have done this for years, so it came as a shock. The hostess reasoning was," Because the patio is small and we have to be sure everyone can enjoy it." Wait- you mean everyone except a party of 6? Or any more than 4? Very confused. Our waitress whom introduced herself as Rebecca (but my receipt said Claire) was just awful. Very frazzled, having trouble focusing. She was trying, that was obvious but they had only just opened and weren't even that busy. My food was out before my soup and salad. We had to ask for things numerous times. Never a complaint about the food though!!! This review is really 4.5 stars. We lucked out on a busy Saturday night. We walked in and there was a no show so we got seated right away! The restaurant has very nice decor. I split a large warm sake with my friend. We also split a screaming shrimp and shrimp tempura appetizer across the table. I liked the tempura, the batter wasn't too heavy! The screaming shrimp was also tasty and my friend took the sauce home. I got the spicy tuna roll and hamachi nigiri. The fish was decent quality. I got a poke salad to go. I was a little disappointed they didn't offer ice cream, just the tempura ice cream. Overall, service was ok but the food hit the spot for me. Recommended this by a barista from Revelator. I was in NOLA for about 24 hours and in the mood for some sushi. But after going through the menu, decided on some udon, and it was one of the better decisions of my life. The noodles were SO filling and tasty. If I lived in New Orleans, I would definitely make a return trip to try the sushi. read more

Okay, Sake Cafe. I'm once again updating my rating. I decided to give you guys another chance the other night and brought a friend in (mostly since you stay open later than the rest of the early birds on Magazine), and we both enjoyed our dinner very much. She said it was the best sushi she's had in NOLA, and my roll was certainly excellent too. Also, props on the tempura. Delicious, especially the dipping sauces! Our server was fast and pleasant and had no problem honoring the free drink through Yelp check-in, so I ended up with a glass of rather choice chardonnay. The Crawfish Roll and crunchy roll is so GOOD. 10/10 recommend. The service is welcoming and quick despite the restaurant being busy. You ever go to a happy hour spot and think "how the hell have I not been here before?" Well, that was me on yesterday when I visited Sake Cafe for the first time. I stopped by for sushi as I had a craving all weekend and wanted to try a new spot. Once I saw the happy hour sign outside, I knew that it only made sense to get a drink or two! Y'all, cocktails are half priced during happy hour. Meaning drinks that are $8.50 are $4.25. Even Michael Jackson can't beat it. (RIP legend) And before you assume you're getting a watered down drink for that price, think again. Because the drinks have a nice strong kick to them. I got a Mangotini which has mango puree in it and a Samurai Strawberry Kiss. The vanilla vodka and strawberry flavors mesh together sooo well. On to the rolls: Their sushi is fresh and they have some pretty creative rolls. I like to stick to the rivers and the lakes that I'm used to, so I usually go for rolls with seafood I already enjoy. I grabbed the New Orleans Roll with Crawfish, Avocado, & Crunchy Inside, Snow Crab & Spicy Tuna on Top with Wasabi Tobiko & Eel Sauce. Dee-lish. The Wasabi Tobiko was my favorite addition to the roll, hands down. The HH menu also boasts a few rolls and appetizers, so I also grabbed a crawfish roll and some steamed shrimp shumai. It's tailor-made for people who selfie their every outing, who don't actually eat so much as order, ogle, and opine, and whose idea of a good night out is a recreation of the latest something someone they've never met did for dollars on TV. Loud, dark, and crowded, but oh so scene! Funny thing is that while far from Japanese the sushi and whatnot isn't bad (deep-fried sushi is very Louisianan). I love sushi and I will pay for great fish without complaint. We go out expecting to spend money and we have no issue with it. I can't even believe the experience we had here. The interior, as always, was beautiful. Visually it's a very classy place suitable for casual or business lunch and dinner. The sushi and the rolls? Not so much. Our Crunchy Roll was not crunchy. In fact, I took a closeup so you can see that I'm not exaggerating. We didn't complain because we were starving and also, the employees we encountered were all miserable. (We had no problem overhearing their various conversations, the place was empty.) The salmon on the Tiger Roll was sliced so thinly it looked like it was melting/dripping against the rice. Sake Cafe Uptown is one of my absolutely FAVORITE sushi places in NOLA. Conveniently located on Magazine St., the lunch bento box is to die for and can easily be made vegan! (Ask for all veg tempura, seaweed salad instead of gyoza, and avo/cucumber rolls instead of California.) Hot sake there is great and we absolutely love the staff and ambience. "Sake" was one of my mom's favorites. Her go to for sushi in NOLA. So Tuesday after I modeled for Blue Easel Art Club I stopped by in honor of my momma. Sat at the bar, JOHN was awesome. Got there as soon as they opened and was greeted and seated immediately, needed a place with parking on magazine which I really hard to come by and this was the spot! Usually me and the coworkers come for their bada** happy hour but lunch specials are also A1 here. Food We got rolls, believe tiger, rainbow, hard rock. The quality of the rolls were great. Nothing looked like they rolled it with a 2 year old behind the bar and everything was presented in a very pleasing manner. The rolls themselves huge portions and super great! Nice combo of flavors and also great service. Hoping to rekindle our old love of this place, we tried Sake Café again last night and were pretty disappointed. For starters, it seems like there are more waiters and greeters than actual patrons, which is weird. They are all super-high energy, spiffily dressed and eager young employees, to be sure. Yet... the service is S-L-O-W for some reason. For example, our order, consisting of soup, entree and one beverage, too over 40 minutes to fully arrive. Only then did we realize we'd probably be leaving hungry, because the portion sizes are kinda small. Whereas other Japanese restaurants include things like soup and salad with their Sushi Dinner, not here. Everything is "a la carte". So right out of the chute, you're paying $7-10 more for your meal than anywhere else. The kicker is that the Sushi Dinner is basically 2 tuna, 2 salmon, a couple of others thrown in (including FAKE CRAB, which is a travesty) and a tiny glass with cubes of the same fishes topped by a single butterflied shrimp. Likewise, the $14(!!) Rising Sun Roll - says the menu, "California Roll Inside Topped with Fresh Salmon & Spicy Mayo, Baked & Garnished with Crispy Rice Noodle on Top" - is not only puny, but really not satisfying in flavor either. Regrettably, my dinner guest mistook "Fresh Salmon" for ... FRESH (raw) SALMON, but no... it's cooked. The result is far less enjoyable. Yes, they've nancied the place up nicely and everything is neat and clean (with the exception of a mysterious pile of dirty dishes left standing near the entryway for the duration of our meal, wtf?), but we won't be going back. read more

I've been a customer of Sake Uptown for ages, and have always had great experiences. The food is delicious, the service is excellent and the decor is lovely. Every time I'm there I spend some time looking up at the beautiful, colorful, blown glass chandeliers. Stop in just to check them out if you're in the area. Today I was on Magazine and stopped in to place a to go order at the bar. I placed my order with the friendly bar tender and my food was ready in about 10 minutes. My order - a salmon box - was accurate, the fish was fresh, and it was very tasty. Best of all - they have their own large parking lot!! read more

Whenever we're staying in town a few days, I always scope out and prep-plan meals at places outside the main tourist hubs. This was a fabulous find! We ordered two apps - ribs and calamari, spouse got a sashimi salad with a sushi roll for his entree, and I opted for the Akita Snapper with a cup of dumpling soup and can happily report that each and every dish was absolutely delicious. Our waitress was a doll, super sweet, attentive, and proficiently kept our dinner moving at a nice pace. The beautifully designed dining room with low lighting scores big points for me and was a major factor in choosing this establishment. The one negative point I have is that this was one of just a few places I had on my itinerary for dinners. The other place I had planned for this particular night ended up getting booked up before I could make our reservations, so, prior to the day of, I quickly checked Sake Cafe's website to get their number to book us there. Their site has a reservation booking service that I used and was able to get my preferred time for two reserved, no problem. When we got there, however, the hostess didn't have us down. I showed her my reservation confirmation and she told me that they don't use the link on the site anymore. This would have been good to know ahead of time. In the meantime, when we got there there were already parties inside and outside waiting to be seated. After the reservation debacle, our hostess said she'd go ahead and seat us but we did have to wait 10-15 minutes, and our booth was tucked away in a corner where the rest of the dining room and the bar area is not visible which was very disappointing. Sake Cafe is so perfect for whenever I get a craving for Japanese food in a *lush* setting. Given the nice day, outside patio dining was the only option I wanted to consider and luckily there was a spot for the three of us. The interior is large and almost like a sleek nightclub. On that note, am I the only one who has noticed that in America, Japanese places are usually one of two kinds: the "authentic" modest, tight- but well designed- little spots with a sushi bar, a couple tables and not much else besides some Shoji screens and art *or* the complete over-the-top "ultra lounge" opposite? Just an observation. And I'm not complaining as I like both kinds of ambiance, but Sake Cafe definitely falls into the latter. So on this nice day, we ordered... a fuckton of food. Seriously. My standard in a sushi joint, since I don't eat fish, is an avocado/cucumber roll (I prefer them inside/out). Hooray for fresh ingredients, nutty, slightly chewy roasted seaweed (my new favorite snack, by the way) and flavorful rice. Most important, the avocado was perfectly ripe and delicious. And sesame seeds make it even better! So, they got my standard right. And I had two of them. I also couldn't help but gorge on the seaweed salad, so I highly recommend that, too. Now onto the booze. It was a day drinkin' kind of day (Friday before NYE is a holiday, right?) I ordered my usual thing for the occasion, a Bloody Mary. Decent. Not in the league of flavor at Buddha Belly and not as dressed up as they are at Le Bon Temps or River Shack. Tasty, though! Then again, would you normally expect a Bloody Mary to be amazing at a Japanese restaurant? Not so much. I will definitely try some of their other specialty cocktails on my next visit. We arrived about 12 min later and we were told that there would be a 30 min wait. We looked into the dining room and saw many available tables and many open spots at the sushi bar. We told the 2 ladies that we were happy to sit at the sushi bar. We were told that we could not sit there either. I asked why we were told to head over 12 min prior and that they had many open tables. I was told there had been a "wave of people who had just walked in." I asked where these people were because I saw so many available tables. She did not respond. The evening turned out to be very nice however when we left. I visited Sake Cafe for the first time over the weekend. From the moment we were seated, until the moment we walked out, I was unimpressed and regretted ever going. First, the service was painfully slow. And the place was fairly empty while we were there, so I'm not sure the reason for this slow service. Then once the food arrived, it just was not good. The food quality was simply not up to par with other offerings in the area. I have been to numerous other sushi restaurants in the area, and this is by far the worst one I've ever been to. I was in the area for Art for Arts Sake and after reading the reviews, decided to try this cafe. I wasn't expecting it to be dimly lit and at first, felt under dressed. Thankfully, my attire wasn't an issue and I was seated at a table near the windows in the main dining room. Carli was my server and helped me decide between two rolls I was considering. I already knew I wanted the Ribeye roll (steak and sushi, of course) and my second choice was the Cherry Blossom roll. As an appetizer, I had the unagi and avocado hand roll (devoured before taking a picture). The Cherry Blossom had a little kick to it and the sauces were delicious. The Ribeye roll was tasty too. We had a great experience here. We sat at the bar and it was a bit hectic but Christopher made it very enjoyable by giving us the lowdown on sake and several tastings. We ended up buying a bottle of his favorite and then a glass of the other favorite for dessert. We had hot chicken soup which was practically boiling - make sure you let it cool or it will ruin your night along with a few sushi rolls. It would be nice to have the sushi menu with what each roll is somewhere handy, I still have no idea what some rolls were. Also the sushi ordering sheet is also nice to have nearby. Every time I come here for happy hour, I wonder why I'm not going every week! The HH is long (3-6!) and has great food deals (you've got to get the goat cheese gyoza, as well as the calamari which is sizeable and only $5) as well as a long list of half priced cocktails, beer & wine. A word to the wise for their half priced martinis- they are very tasty, but very strong!! After chowing down on HH bites, I got a Lava Roll. It was....fine? A great Happy Hour and nice spot for people watching on their patio. I've been to this location a few times, and they really have some lovely blown-glass chandeliers. Not sure if they are original Chihuly but that is what they look like. They have plenty of seating options and a very long sushi bar, but we opted to enjoy the weather outside. Their happy hour is pretty great if you're not overly tempted by special rolls. We had tuna, salmon, and mackerel sashimi, two rolls including a crawfish and California, edamame, the goat cheese gyoza and a large sake each. All this totaled out to only $38. My friend was very pleased with his cheap date status. The only dish I didn't love was the goat cheese gyoza, but I think maybe goat cheese just didn't really go with the other things we were enjoying. Our waitress was attentive but not overly so, and the weather was perfect for outdoor dining. I would definitely come back for another Happy Hour feast! read more
