We have been coming here for quite some time, and it has always been our neighborhood go-to restaurant. The service was consistently good, which is why what happened tonight was so disappointing. The restaurant wasn't even busy. After we were seated, the staff walked away without giving us any menus. We had to ask for them ourselves. Even after receiving the menus, we waited for more than 15 minutes without anyone offering us water or acknowledging us. During that time, another table was seated after us, yet the waitress immediately went over to take their order. When she finally came to our table, I politely mentioned that we had arrived first and had been waiting to order. She responded by saying she thought we weren't ready. I told her that we had been ready and waiting the entire time. Instead of apologizing or taking our order, she simply walked away without saying another word. A few minutes later, after speaking with another gentleman (who appeared to be the manager or owner), he came to our table and asked, "Did you have a problem with our waitress?" I calmly explained that we had simply pointed out that we had been waiting while another table that arrived after us was served first. Rather than apologizing for the oversight, he responded by saying, "We're not fine dining." I was honestly stunned by that response. Basic hospitality and common courtesy - such as acknowledging guests, providing menus and water, and serving tables in the order they arrive - have nothing to do with whether a restaurant is fine dining. His attitude became defensive, and it felt as though he no longer wanted to serve us. My daughter was hungry, so I chose not to argue and we placed our order. Unfortunately, the food was just as disappointing as the service. The sushi and sashimi did not taste fresh at all, and we could barely eat them. We ended up taking most of the food home instead. Spending $119 for rude service and subpar food was incredibly disappointing. As someone who has worked in the hospitality industry for many years, I don't believe my expectations were unreasonable. Mistakes happen, but what truly matters is how they are handled. A simple apology would have gone a long way. Instead, we were met with defensiveness and a complete lack of professionalism. This experience completely changed our opinion of a restaurant we used to enjoy. Sadly, we will not be returning, nor would I recommend it to anyone looking for good service and quality Japanese food. read more

I highly recommend trying the lunch special! They give large portions and plentiful amount of food for $25! I had the teriyaki chicken and rice. It came with soup, salad, and a choice of two sides. MLB World Series. Game 1. Ended up here as other places were jammed packed. Sat out on the parklet. There's also indoor seating, as well as covered seating on the sidewalk patio. There was a big screen out for the parklet. So, all good. In time for Happy Hour. Sapporo Drafts. $2 Pints and $4 34 ounce mugs. I can't think of a better deal anywhere else. Some food on the HH menu. Had a few (see pics). Nothing to rave about. Ordered off the regular menu too. Nothing to rave about that as well. I'm not gonna knock the service as the place was hopping for the game. They were friendly enough even with the mood since the Dodgers lost. I'd have to make a return visit to really get a feel but I think it would be fine. Parking in the nearby structures. If you know Downtown Culver City, you'll know what I mean. On a Friday, you might get lucky and find street parking but it's so much easier to just head to the structures. Or rideshare. No rush to get back as I mentioned, as the food was just ok. I'll be honest -- I've walked by Sake House countless times and never felt compelled to go in. The exterior doesn't do it any favors, and the place always seemed quiet compared to the restaurant next door. But I finally gave it a shot, and I'm so glad I did. The happy hour deals alone are worth it. The shishito peppers were honestly the best I've ever had, and at $10 during happy hour, it's a steal. The chicken karaage looked a little rough in the photos online, but don't let that fool you -- it was tender, flavorful, and really well done. The umai roll with truffle was delicious. The only thing i wasnt obsessed with was the baked salmon roll, which was just okay, but everything else more than made up for it. Oh, and $2 beers. I'm sorry -- $2 beers? That alone is reason enough to come back. This isn't going to be your most traditional sushi experience, but the quality is genuinely solid. I have been dining at Sake House for many years! The fish is always fresh and delicious. The restaurant is very accommodating of food allergies. We began eating here when my kids were young children and they are now young adults! The whole family loves Sake House, not only for sushi and sashimi, but also for tempura, teriyaki, and miso soup! The patio has excellent heating via fire pits or heat lamps --and I am a person who gets cold easily--yet I'm usually fine sitting outside. On the coldest days I'll sit inside, which is cozy and delightful as well. This place has been in Culver City, for quite awhile. Luckily, there was no wait and as luck would have it, it's also Happy Hour. So I immediately took advantage of the happy hour prices and ordered the Mini Red Rock, the Lady in Red Roll, the Salmon Avocado Roll, and the Yellowtail Jalapeno Sashimi. I also ordered nigori and edamame to go with everything. The items came fast. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the Lady in Red. The only problem I had would be finding parking. There's a lot of good options on the menu. I really enjoyed the fried squash, which had a hint of yuzu. The Red Rock roll was an interesting, filling choice as well. The chicken karaage never disappoints. We have even been here for a large party during happy hour, made possible with advance reservations, and it was so affordable with a larger group! The service is also top notch and attentive. The patio is very chill and friendly; during the colder months there are warmers, but I would still bring a hefty jacket. Super fun for summer time.
