We come here pretty often for weekend buffet. The quality of the buffet is so far the best in the Bay Area. The spread is spectacular for price we pay. Management is very good. If you are planning to go for a buffet it's well worth the money but if you are going for a regular dinner menu it's pretty expensive for the portion size. We ordered multiple appetisers but were surprised to see the portion size - aloo tiki for around $7 -$8 had only 3 pieces which was a not what we expect for the price. Food was OK, but the experience was terrible. The restaurant was full and so they asked us to sit in the back section of the restaurant that's behind their kitchen. That section has like 4 booths and can accommodate total 16 guests. But unlike the front part of the restaurant, that section is smelly, dirty with no air flow. The waiters weren't responsive and I had to keep calling them for refills and stuff. The manager was shouting at one of their employees for 10 minutes and we and others in our section could hear all of that. As for as the food goes, we had buffet and the food was OK, nothing special. Great ambiance and decor and more upscale than your typical chaat cafe. There's a nice bar, ample seating for dining, both upstairs and downstairs. Fiberoptic chandeliers, brightly patterned apolstried chairs, two to four top tables and circular booths. The hallway leading to the bathroom is lined with mirrors, chests, and candles. Great vibe. Happy hour has $5 specialty cocktails. I got a caipirinha (Brazilian lime dink) and a Mojito. The mojito was minty and well balanced. $2 Kingfisher on draft, which my boyfriend liked and described as the Budwiser of India, only better. Veggie Samosas ($5.50): Mmm, crispy fried pyramids filled with smashed potatoes, peas, and cashews. The sweet brown sauce was a good pair. The green spicy sauce was a bit too spicy and pungent for me. Good starter. Butter Chicken: Tender madallions of slow cooked chicken in a light, creamy sauce reminiscent of tomato basil bisque. Great flavor with a slight kick. Fragrant Rice Pilaf ($5): Flakey, light, and lightly splashed with butter. Really good. Plain Butter naan ($3): Big pieces of flatbread rich in white flour, crispy on the edges and softer in the middle. It was ok. Stone Ground Whole Wheat Roti ($3): Warm, soft, delicious. Flat triangles of whole wheat bread. A nice sopping agent for the butter chicken sauce. Better tasting and lighter than the plain butter naan. Great meal, great vibe, nice service. read more

Used to be a great place. Very sad to see the current state of affairs here. The wine bottles in the bar are covered with dust. The waiter said they have no propane to turn on the outdoor heating, however when we walked and came back later it was running.. Above everything, they usually used to give pickles and onion as side of naan etc... They did not.. when we asked they said they don't have onions in kitchen. Indian restaurant without onions.... I am a regular customer here. And i got so disappointed from their service and food quality and quantity from 2 times. I ordered "tomato and fennel soup" supposed to come in thick consistency, but it was like water. I was fan of it from this restaurant. And I ordered "bhindi masala" and it was not even enough for 2 people.. are you serious? You are taking some $15 for that. I am not going to again go there. Sakoon is One of my favorite Indian spots in the Southbay. Some of her favorite dishes include dal Makhni, sham savera kofta, the avocado jhal Muri appetizer (always a big hit) and the tandoori paneer appetizers (the flavor is so rich and delicious). The spice levels are just right at Sakoon. Their drinks are also quite delicious - I had he mango sangria once and it was perfect to give you a light buzz :) I like the Mountain View location better just because of he lounge like ambiance however, both Fremont and Mountain View locations serve elicious food. read more

Sakoon is an Indian restaurant located on Castro Street in Mountain View. The place seems quite fancy. I saw a wide variety of folks dining for lunch, including a lot of Indian people (which is a good sign!). For the lunch buffet, they have a large variety of dishes. They should have a variety of dishes because $13.95 for a lunch buffet seems quite steep (granted, I am used to $6-$10 Indian lunch buffets). The variety is good, and they even have some Indo-Chinese dishes. The naan they provide at the table is very fluffy as well. Mango lassi is good but I wish they would provide more of the drink! The one complaint I have is that the seating upstairs is really awkward. The tables are FAR too low (they even look like giant ottomans themselves) for the seats that they provide. What a fun Sunday brunch experience to open up the New Year. This was recommended by an Indian friend, and it did not disappoint. After being seated, we headed to the mouth dropping array of brunch buffet choices. There is something for everybody. And for me, after sampling the board, I particularly enjoyed the lamb curry, the butter chicken, tandoori chicken, and fish curry. Exceptionally priced - $14.95 for weekend brunch buffet on Saturdays and Sundays - when considering the tender love and care that went into the buffet dishes. After waiting for 25 minutes, I was told that they could not serve us starters. He mentioned that since he hasn't informed about our orders inside, I have to wait for another few minutes. My guess was 20 minutes. It was 20 minutes. I didn't want to ruin my family happiness and I waited patiently. Finally, the food was delivered after 45 minutes. I am a vegetarian. For me, what makes this restaurant great is the appetizer selection. My favorites are: Saufiya Paneer, and Lassuni Gobhi...they are to DIE for! I also recommend their tomato soup...it's probably the best tomato soup I've ever had! As far as their entrees go, they're nothing too spectacular or original. Their Shahi Paneer is the same as it would be at any other indian restaurant and ditto for the other curries I've tried there. The ambience is great and the bar area is super pretty. Despite all the great reviews, I was not impressed with Sakoon in Mountain View at all. My family and I went for a lunch buffet in the weekend and found the food to be below average. Firstly, the complimentary naans were overly doughy and raw inside. I was surprised that a classy place such as Sakoon would serve raw naans! Secondly, the buffet was very limited with food that was below average. There was not a single dish that I enjoyed at Sakoon and felt the fusion element of their cuisine ruined the food. The rosemary infused kebabs were rather odd and unsettling to my stomach with flavors of rosemary and spices infused into a kebab. The tandoori chicken was slightly burnt and dry. I think the only thing that was decent was the rice...but I don't see how one can go wrong with rice. The desserts offered in the buffet were strange and very limited. The kheer (rice pudding) was watered down and had no substance whatsoever. The other dessert, which seemed to be some sort of thick semolina pudding, had a glue like consistency and tasted of starch and cardamon. Overall, I did not like Sakoon and will not be returning any time soon to sample another one of their buffets. I can only hope their a-la carte is better! read more

Came here for a friend's bday dinner. We got the upstairs section, which was cool. There were other seatings like the main dining area and also there's a section in the back which was gear towards more romantic dates because there were booths that are higher so other people cannot disturb you. There was another room in the back too but didn't get a good look to what it looks like. We had a huge group, so service can be a little slow, but the waiter was really nice and tried to keep up with what we want. Crabcakes- this was ok, too much breading on outside though. Butter Chicken- nothing special, but can't go wrong with this. Lamb Vindaloo- this was a bit spicy, enough spice for me. Bread Basket- cool to try different breads like naans. Overall, the foods were good, nothing really special though. On the expensive side, but you are basically paying for the ambiance. There are a lot of Indian places on Castro Street in Mountain View, but Sakoon definitely stands out. Certainly, Indian food is not bland... with all its spices, all Indian food is pretty delicious. But what sets Sakoon apart is the freshness of its ingredients and care they put into the food. Their Saag Paneer actually tastes like spinach! And you can tell just by the bright green color that the spinach is fresh. Their butter chicken is like buttah.... I brought home left overs and ate every drop of that sauce.... on their menu they called it a "gravy" ....I think that is pretty apt! If you're willing to put the money down, their lamb chop tandoori is amazing. They do it medium rare - so you get the juiciness of it being perfectly cooked as well as the wonderful smokey spice of it being a tandoori. Squirt some lemon on top of that, and it's heaven. I guess that is the problem with Sakoon is that it's a little bit on the pricey side, my reason for 4 stars instead of 5. I understand their ingredients are fresher and the decor nicer - but still, I think i would go more if it were a couple dollars cheaper per dish. Also, their mango sangria is freakin' awesome. I went there with some recommendations of coworkers. I have to say I love Indian food and I probably eat more Indian food that my desi coworkers. The place was full during lunch time and we were seated fairly promptly. The decor is nice and was fairly noisy. They have a quite extensive buffet menu starting with some chaats ending with a made to order indochinese (which I avoid as a principle). In general the food was rather bland, not to say it wasn't spicy, but what I mean is that nothing stood out as a single dominant flavor. The tandori chicken wasn't marinated for too long as the meat on the inside had a taste of KFC (which has no taste). With so many choices for Indian food, Sakoon needs to step up. read more

Went to this place as a birthday dinner for a friend. We were about 13 of us, so made reservations one day prior and set the menu as well. The entry and seating was quick and efficient. The drinks came so late in the meal, that we thought they forgot about them!! We ordered samosas for starters and that was when all the drama started. They brought in 6 plates of samosa, served and were gorged down in no time. The waiter took away the starter plates and then they realized they had forgotten to serve the remaining 6 plates of the order! New starter plates were placed and the starters served again. We ordered the sham savera and tandoori vegetable for main course along with bread baskets. The sham savera was simply awesome. The other one strictly ok. We followed this up by the vegetable biryani and raita, both good. Overall, good food, confused staff and a little overpriced; sakoon is definitely one of the good Indian restaurants in the South Bay. Hoping to try their buffet some day. read more

The only reason I am giving it a 4 star and not 5 star is because of their desserts.. I think they need to add better desserts to the menu... Their presentation and taste of the food is awesome.. The parking is available right across the street which is perfect considering how difficult it is to find good parking on Castro.. Their staff is very friendly and nice.. I have visited this place multiple times and I think this place is worth 3 starts but I am reviewing this placed based on todays experience and I am literally tired of money minded nature of these restaurant owners. I visited this restaurant for buffet on 1st Jan 2018 was hoping bashing start of new year but it was totally disappointing visit. Ambiance :- This place is decent ambiance but it is more on darker side which gives you dull feeling sometime while eating. They have multiple seating arrangements main dining hall , upstairs dining hall , outside open door seating , inside family seating & bar counter seating. Every arrangement has its own advantages and disadvantage. They have put one more table (Hight table seating) just in front entrance and next to bar counter. Please try to avoid seating at this place. People who are waiting for the table gather around this spot and eating on that spot feels very weird because other people will keep on staring at your food. Suggestion to the owner is to please remove this table , this is doing much worse that good and it completely ruining the dining experience. I prefer eating at the middle of the street rather seating that particular place. Food :- Food taste keeps on changing , since I am going to this place from last 2.5 years I felt lot has been changed over the period of time. I would rate the food average. I have tried lunch buffet, a la carte menu and almost everything this restaurant has to offer. I don't think any particular dish the worth mentioning in this review. Service :- Well service is entirely depends upon where exactly your table located. Ideally this should not be the case but this is how it is in this restaurant. - If your table is in centre dining hall you will get good service. Water will be served properly on your tables and empty plates are cleared quickly from the table. - If you got the outside tables or other seating arrangement which I have highlighted earlier then its really a nightmare. You literally have to beg for water and cleaning the empty plates. Please avoid seating on these areas. Pricing :- Usually I think its 17 $ per person which seams to be reasonable price for this buffet. On 1st Jan 18 they have increased buffet pricing up to 18.49 without taxes also since it was holiday time they have themselves added service tax of 15% which was outrageous considering the fact that there was hardly any service provided on my table. Buffer was self service and I never asked for water during the entire lunch. Tip :- Avoid seating on the high table which is located at the entry door and outside. Suggestion to management :- If you can not provide good service to tables then either reduce the tables or increase number of people working. Ultimately customer has to pay entire amount + outrageous 15% service tax with or without receiving proper service. I like routine, hence for last few months, I have been dining at Sakoon for more than 2 to 3 times a week due to convenience. I also insist my group of friends to join me when I dine at Sakoon. A curry and 1 bread would cost me more than $23 for dinner. Hence on average, it costs me more than $250 a month. But I was satisfied with the place. Service is mere average, but I regularly tip more that 15% when the service is satisfactory. I am polite and friendly with the servers as well. The last time I had a dinner at Sakoon, I was dining alone. When the check was presented, it had a 18% tip added to my check. I called for the server and politely asked if it was a mistake. The server replied "To be frank, you people don't tip. This is a fine dine restaurant and you have to tip here". There was anger in his voice and his tone was very insulting. In the response, I politely replied that I regularly tip most of the times and if there was a mandatory tip involved, I should have been informed before the dinner. In the angry voice, he said "I am taking it off this time but the next time you would have to pay it". He nodded at me with a scornful look. I felt insulted and mentally tormented due to the tone and the behavior. I checked the menu and I didn't find any mention of compulsory service charge/tip on it. I have lived in the US since a long time. According to my research and knowledge, I realize that service charge can only be charged if its mentioned on the menu or if the diner/s are informed beforehand. After the dinner, I brought the issue to the supervisor. He answered saying "As I didn't speak up the last few times about extra service charge, the server might have assumed that it was ok for you". Suddenly I realized that I was trusting the restaurant too much. Extra charge was slipped into my check without informing me. This was the first time I noticed it. I found the situation offensive, insulting and unlawful in the following ways: 1. Using the words "you people don't tip" in anger was a clear discrimination against me. Maybe it was racist. 2. I was being charged extra money (more than mentioned on the menu) since last few dinners. Based on the discrimination and without informing me. 3. Had a doctor appointment at PAMF and on the way home decided to give this place a try after a friend recommended them. Tried the lunch buffet and it was delicious! I eat meat but I actually had more fun eating all the delicious vegetarian food. There were great options for both meat and vegetarian. Service was very nice and the atmosphere was better than other Indian restaurants I've seen. I absolutely will be back and recommend them! read more

I love that they have several types of breads because I fkkn love bread, a full bar, really nice restrooms (lol), amazing service - everyone is super friendly here and they really do go above and beyond to make you happy. I don't yelp much but after the experience we had there, we all promised that we would leave it a review on at least one forum. We were there for a lunch buffet and they open at 11:30. We got there around 11:45 and half of the dishes for the buffet were not out yet. The naan came out about 25 minutes into our meal when everyone had just about finished their meal. The Malai Kofta I had was the worst I've had it my life. It had the viscosity and color of something slightly thicker than milk, which I have never seen before. The desserts were horrible and made out of frozen packages. Being Indian, you recognize the local frozen desserts at first sight because that's what you serve at home during the holidays. Then came the time to pay for our meals. There were 6 of us and we were told that they would only take 3 credit cards. I understand that some places do this to save time or for whatever reason but at a lunch buffet it doesn't make sense. People go in groups and pay for their own meals majority of the time. We went there for our third wedding anniversary dinner. We had Chaat Papdi for appetizers and Chicken Tikka Masala, tandoori roti and a basket of naans. Price-wise, the restaurant is a bit expensive, especially considering the quantity The Chaat papdi, otherwise, at a medium-end restaurant would cost $5 or $6. But here it costs us $12. The portion was enough only for one person. The chicken tikka is also good enough for two people. The naans are also prized a bit high for $5-$6 each. Overall, the restaurant is suitable for a special occasion or a dinner date. But if you plan to visit with a big party of people, I would suggest to look for a reasonable option. read more

I really enjoyed the decor inside the restaurant. There are very pretty lights from the ceiling that change colors. I had the Chicken Biryani and the butter chicken. The butter chicken was AMAZING. Today, my boyfriend took me here for a post Valentine's celebration..we have been dating for years and this is the very first Indian restaurant we dined together and we both agree, Sakoon has to be the BEST Indian restaurant in the Peninsula. Reservations required as they are ALWAYS busy with people willing to wait because the food is SUPER DELICIOUS, with exceptional customer service especially from Selena. Ambience is soft and cozy with a modern feel. No complaints about food. It was great. Worst service:- 1. First of all, the manager was rude when we asked about table and buffet. He said we have to wait outside until some table gets empty even though there were few open tables. Din't even put our name in waiting list. 2. We waited almost for 1 hour and apparently they gave us the same table that I mentioned above. 3. Sequence of bringing food was messed up. Waiter said I thought you wanted roasted papad as a main course :)). 4. There was delay in subsequent food orders. 5. Do you want to overpay for SALTY food??? Sakoon used to be a favorite for me and my wife, we loved their appetizers and ambiance and good buffet, but that has changed because of our recent experiences. We went there for a buffet on 10/30, a Monday an hour before the scheduled closing time and here is what we find: 1. Some items on the buffet were finishing off and I saw people scrape food from the bottom of the pan, I expected them to refill it given that there was a whole hour till closing time, but they didn't !! 2. SALTY SALTY SALTY... all the vegetarian dishes i ate, were extremely salty and killed my appetite and taste buds 3. Gulab jamun was served as shreds and not balls and was not at all tasty 4. The rice kheer was empty and no one filled it 5. the service was terrible, no one bothered to come and ask us for a second helping of roti's or ask us if we needed anything given that some items were out 6. and at 15$ a person, it was way overpriced.. We had a similar experience with a dinner with friends we went to in September. Food wasn't salty then, it just wasn't tasty. and it burned a hole in our pocket !! The only 2 things that work in Sakoon's favor are the location(Mountainview downtown is beautiful) and the ambiance.
