I think these guys are not using proper discretion to charge customers their gratuity. The other day we were 7 in a group but we had buffet lunch. Surprisingly, even for a buffet lunch, they slapped 15% gratuity. 15% can amount a fair number of dollars. We were the ones who served ourselves, obviously, being a buffet. Even if you think that they can charge gratuity if the group size is large (7 is not large by any imagination), still it was not dinner where we are served our dishes. It was lunch buffet. So, where is the rationale for charging gratuity?. Even for a normal dinner, I have always questioned this practice of charging gratuity because, what if we just broke the group up into 2 and sat on 2 separate tables. It is the same service and same food, right? I think this gratuity forced on customers is not a reasonable practice in itself. If a customer is happy with the service, ambience, etc. he/she will give a reasonable tip on his/her own. But of course, in this case, they can leave a distaste by forcing a gratuity even for buffet lunch. read more

Every one seemed to come out happy and satisfied with the restaurant, so I would recommend this place. The restaurant staff was pretty nice, helped us create a decent seating area for the big group. Lot of varieties for vegetarians- daal, mix veg, paneer masala, salad, mix veg pakoda, raita, two kinds of pickle, naan, Biryani, gajar halwa, gulabjamun, khee- can't remember a lot of dishes I guess. Everything tasted pretty good and wasn't spicy at all for Indian taste. Deducting one star coz the mix vegetable curry had too much oil and the paneer sabzi was too sweet for me. No whole wheat Tandori roti, they only got us naan. The buffet price is very affordable even though it is in Mountain View downtown- very neat and good ambience. Easily accessible- loads of parking lots available near the restaurant. I was lucky to find roadside parking close to the restaurant during weekday. The best Indian lunch buffet in the Bay Area, with more than a dozen choices, a generous amount of non-veg options including goat, chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, and fish masala, and very good veg options too including saag corn, aloo gobi, paneer, Hakka noodles, and more. Everything was so flavorful and fresh too, the quality isn't compromised. While I feel there could have been one non-Indian dessert option (ice cream or cake), that is a small gripe compared to the great food and service. And at around $20, this has to be the best value buffet in the Bay. This is the new standard. read more

The ambience is good ! But the food isn't that great for the prices ! We ordered 3 starters - dahi vada, soufiya paneer and papdi chaat. The papdi chat and dahi vada were pretty good but the paneer wasn't that great! It kind of tasted bland! The main course was okayish too ! The quantity isn't so much either. The phool makhana curry was the best of all. The Jain option Chana pindi tasted weird. Coming to the Sam savera kofta, the gravy was good but not the kofta !! I have to say the service is pretty good though ! They were friendly and answered all our questions. The gap between serving starters and main course was a lot though ! Mr. Abhishek says that the service charge of 15% is mandatory due to holidays and when I said this was not the case before, his justification is gas prices are high. Food was still amazing (hadn't visited in years), and it is wonderful for large groups. We had a party of 8, and eating family style meant we all had a variety of meats, and veggies. We had more than enough food, as well as some leftovers. Chose this restaurant as one of our party is vegetarian. The staff was very responsive, and did not rush us as we had several people visiting from out of town for the holidays. Easy parking and this block is blocked off on Castro St, so we took a nice stroll after dinner to walk off some of our dinner. read more

Sakoon Mountain View has been our go to restaurant for very long but the recent visit there yesterday was beyond expectation. Everything has lost its taste. Vegetarian appetizers were very oily and taste less. Poori, french fries and samosas everything seems to doubled cooked in oil and didn't taste good at all. I found the naan was a little burnt but super fresh and came out hot from the oven. I particularly enjoyed the paneer, butter chicken, lemon fish, and chicken skewers. This review is specifically for the Sakoon manager - Valent M for their response to the review by Sanam H on 6/19/24. We had reserved in advance for Eid and were hoping to have a nice lunch to celebrate the day. At no point, we were told that we'd be seated in a separate section with absolutely no ventilation, light, in the midst of washrooms and basically cut away from the whole restaurant. Upon reaching the restaurant, when they guided us to that place - I, myself, told them multiple times that we have old and pregnant people with us who cannot walk such long distances to the buffet table again and again - I am really surprised that they are denying the fact that we didnt let them know and don't understand why they needed a visual proof to make sure that there were pregnant people amongst our guests! They were very rude and just wouldnt listen to any of our suggestions. When we asked to just seat 15 people in the front hall, they couldn't even accommodate that and told us that they couldn't send smaller parties to that private room! hard to believe that they did multiple seatings thereafter. In short, management's attitude and refusal to solve the problem really put us in a difficult situation as we had to navigate the logistics of finding another restaurant last minute for our Eid guests. read more

We stumbled on this restaurant as we looked for a last-minute dinner spot before going to TheatreWorks. For some reason reservations were still available on a Saturday at 6:15... that actually made us suspicious! Appartently their rush is lunch buffet, and only about 1/2 of the restaurant was occupied when we went. But, the dinner was excellent. A wide variety of choices, and everything we had was tasty and well presented. So we can vouch for the Avocado Jhalmur, Basil Seekh Kebab, chicken curry, chicken saag, and rice. AND the cocktails. The staff was pleasant and adjusted to our time schedule. The place is clean and efficiently attractive. Just meh....for us. Since our local Bombay Garden closed in San Mateo, we have been on the hunt for a replacement Indian buffet that offered the great flavors we miss. We have found better quality and favors of food at other similar establishments around the Bay Area. Very nice ambiance is unfortunately not in accord with the taste/flavors of the food. Admittedly, we came for the lunch buffet during one of the local arts and wine fairs a few months ago, so perhaps the actual entree menu items could be better? The flavors were heavily spiced without the delicate balance we have enjoyed at other local restaurants; butter chicken was unusualy spicy such that the kids (who LOVE all butter chicken) couldn't finish their pick from the buffet. The tandoori seemed overcooked and lacked the flavor we have experienced elsewhere. That being said, they do have a large variety of items that I haven't seen at other restaurants. Staff was friendly enough to explain how to eat certain items. I tried a little bit of every item and the sum total of the selections just weren't our cup of tea. If you like intense full on flavors, this may be your best bet for Indian fare. If you are looking for a balanced flavors consider going elsewhere. All in all, worth trying once at least. read more

For the fancy Holiday Lunch/Dinner, we picked everyone's all-time favorite Sakoon. Via DoorDash we ordered Achari Chicken Tikka, Paneer Peshawari, and Adraki Aloo Gobhi (spiced cauliflower & potato) for entrees, bread basket and saffron rice for carbs, and Kesrai Chenna Malai (cheese nuggets) for dessert. The food wasn't cheap at all (~$100 with tax, delivery fee, tips, etc. everything included), but its quality and portion were definitely worth the hype. [Taste] I tried everything but couldn't pick a favorite, as I enjoyed every single one. - The chicken tikka was tender, well-grilled yet remained moist and chewy. In addition to its texture, the chicken tikka stood out by its flavor from all the Indian dry chicken dishes I've had - a distinctive aroma that lingered on my tongue. I'd love to know what blended spice created that amazing flavor. - I'm a carnivore but I found it hard to move away from the Paneer Peshawari and the Aloo Gobhi. They were both wonderful, if not perfect, to pair with naan. The paneer was al dente - perfect texture. It also absorbed plenty of flavor from the sauce, which was rare from my past experience (given its dense structure). The Aloo Gobhi was only more tasty than the paneer dish. - Bread basket: delicious paratha and naan with perfect layers/texture and flavor. - Kesrai Chenna Malai: soft tiny cubes stuffed with sweet cheese soaked in delighting cream sauce. Loved it! [Portion] Everything came with average or extra large portion (check out the photos) . - The chicken tikka contained at least 6 gigantic boneless chicken chunks. - The bread basket sampled ~6 half-piece breads of a good variety: paratha, garlic naan, and rosemary naan. And don't get misguided by the "half-piece"! One half piece is more than my average portion of carbs intake for one meal. - The Paneer Peshawari came with super generous portion of long paneer cheese. The other items were of expected portions. I used to come to this place regularly before Covid19. Its lunch buffet was pretty good, friendly staff, good services, you couldn't go wrong going there. This is my second time in Covid19 times and until now, the experiences are still the same: great food, big portions, friendly staff, good services. Also, you will have disposable menus, disinfected tables, one person take your order, another bring you your drinks, and other different bring your food. All of them take distance, clean everything between the interactions. You really feel secure and can just enjoy your meal, so if you are craving Indian food as I was. The buffet has a big spread of food for a very reasonable $22 on the weekend. The standard set of Indian curries and appetizers were quite good - tandoori chicken, achari tikka, saag, dal etc. The egg biryani was sensational and the chai was a nice touch, could have been stronger and with more cardamom. However there were some notable misses: - chana batura had the most average and tasteless chana - pani puri was below average and it's a real pain to get out the puris from the tiny opening - the naan that arrived at our table was burnt - the watermelon was not fresh and it's clearly out of season - veg noodles had barely any veg and was bland - the desserts were DISGUSTING. Artificial flavoring added to everything and cloyingly sweet. I love kheer and I don't understand why they'd mess up a simple dish with added essence! If they actually go all the way to delivering quality and not just quantity, they have the potential to be one of the best in the Bay Area. Has been a go-to spot if you want to be eating within minutes of walking in the door - and the can easily seat groups of 4-6 on weekdays without a wait. We had an online reservation at 1 PM (arrived 15 minutes before) and Sakoon made us wait till almost 1:30 PM, saying they have to seat walk-ins before. SCAM - REAP OFF One of my goto restaurant when I am around Sunnyvale/Mountain View, however, the last experience on December 25th 2021 was awful. Not sure whether I should tag as "REAP OFF" or "SCAM", we as a family of 4 went out for dinner. See attached receipt where the server added a service charge of 20% (approx. 20 dollars) which is absurd and totally wrong because the menu of Sakoon clearly say "18% GRATUITY WILL BE ADDED TO PARTIES OF 6 OR MORE" (http://sakoonrestaurant.com/images/pdf/menu-2021.pdf). On asking the question why, the answer was because we are OPEN on Christmas Day.....DUUUHHHHHHH. What a stupid, baseless, unacceptable answer. I went ahead paid but will definitely never visit or will ask for Manager or Owner before dining in of any additional charges and WARN others to check the receipt for such charges or any charges that are not relevant. I don't recommend this place. TBH, very pricey, small proportion, and lacks flavor in some dishes. We tried avocado jhalmuri, it was literally so tiny. It was also missing chutney and some toppings that I have seen in other pictures. 2nd dish was the mixed grill, this was also a complete disappointment. You're charging $31 for just 6-8 medium sized meat. There's gotta be more come on!! Main course wasn't too bad. The spinach dumplings curry, naan and chicken biryani tasted ok, but again very small portions. The only thing I liked here was the mango mojito. A must try.
