I want to give a higher rating but recently Sakura has been going downhill. I've been here countless times for sit down meals as well as ordering take out. Mainly the reason for picking Sakura over other sushi restaurants is their portions on their Sake don and the freshness of the fish. Well, the past few visits I've noticed both the quality and the portion size dwindling. What set off this review is actually the HORRENDOUS service my party received last week. Now I know the servers there aren't particularly personable and you won't really be checked up on, but this was unacceptable. Two party members ordered cooked dishes while myself and another had sushi. The kitchen dishes came out pretty quick (questionable as to why) and we sushi orderers waited a half hour later for our plates to arrive. A half hour. Not once did our waitress come over, we had to chase her down to find out what was going on which we were told "it's coming". No apology for the excessive wait or the fact we couldn't all enjoy our meals together either. Good sushi, good prices for what you get. In particular, I would go out of the way to try their dragon roll. The Unagi-don (called something else there: unagyo or something) is pretty good, and the Nabeyaki is pretty good. My friends and I went here for a quick bite to eat, and we were not happy. We came here because one of my friends had been here before, and had a nice experience. It was not very busy in the restaurant, and we were seated quickly. We did not bring our own drinks, we had water. For an appetizer, we had edamame, and ahiru (slivers of roast duckling served with sweet sauce). Both were cheap and delicious. I don't remember exactly what we all ordered for our meal, but my boyfriend, my friend and I ordered 10-piece sushi, and my other friend ordered a 6-piece sushi. What really killed our evening was the service. Our waitress made us wait almost 10 minutes to take our order. I would understand if it wa a weekend and busy, but it was a weeknight and not busy at all. When our sushi came, we had 2 10-piece sushi and 2 6-piece sushi. We tried to flag down a server to ask if this was our correct order, but no one would come over. My boyfriend offered to take the mystery 6-piece, and he did not enjoy it. He was still hungry, and ordered another 6-piece. The sushi itself was fine; I've had better, but the price was decent. The service was just terrible. We will not be returning. read more

Sushi looks good and tastes good here, even though just right above the average. The price is not really fair, a kind of expensive. The fried rice and noodles were really salted and oily sometimes. That little room on the back where you eat on the floor is cool & different. and being ankle to bring your own drinks is definitely a plus. I love eating here! The sushi is delicious and reasonably priced. They have the best miso soup. I like to get the house salad which has crab on top, with sesame seeds and ginger dressing. It's BYOB and they have a room where you can sit on cushions on the floor with your shoes off. It's lit with white Christmas lights for a homey atmosphere. I love this place! I have gotten sushi: cooked eggplant and cooked lobster tempura. The lobster tempura sushi is amazing and it has avocado slices on it as well. It is so filling that I can't finish it. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep too well for too long so I would suggest splitting it. The eggplant sushi is also amazing. I love the tempura vegetables there as well! Yum! The ginger dressing for the salad is so good, one of the best I've had. The service is quick and I love the ambiance of the place. It feels so authentic. The parking isn't great but I don't mind walking a bit for this place if need be! This place is also relatively cheap so I recommend giving it a try. read more

I go here 2-3 times a month, this place is awesome. Perfect for a date night / or first date :) . It's byob, has great sushi, great service, in a hip and young urban location. There are bars around the corner - stop at the Wickenden pub for raffles and popcorn - all walking distance, and fun little outlet stores along the street. It was decent but not amazing sushi. The fish seemed quite fresh and the combinations interesting but the taste felt bland. Also the chef used eel in one of the items even though it wasn't on the menu as part of the roll (and we wouldn't have chosen it had we known). the miso did not taste housemade. Went there for the first time tonight and found it to be a solid 3.5 stars as portrayed on yelp. My wife and I ate 18 pieces of sashimi and one "I love you" roll. Pros: Sashimi was tasty. Service was friendly. BYOB allowed us to take a bottle of wine of our choosing. Cons: The roll was just OK. The staff seemed overworked. We were seated at a table in a hallway next to the staff station, so there were constantly customers squeezing past us and staff reaching next to us. Not a good spot for a table. I hope they remove it. If we sat in a different spot I might say 4 stars, but that seating knocks it down to a 3 for me. read more

I've always viewed the service as sort of a schtick. I find that as long as you sit down, concentrate, and are ready to order when they come, you will be fine. It's kinda fun, like Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. I'm also surprised to see that people don't think it's child-friendly. I've brought my daughter there all 3 and half years of her life and she's always been treated very well, but she is a well behaved child. My experience has been if you order quickly, don't ask a million questions, and are polite, you will get decent service. It's not Capriccio's, they're not going to appear out of nowhere to refill your glass the second you take the last sip. It's a small, busy place, and perhaps they haven't always been treated well by their customers, as they don't exactly speak English perfectly -who among us does, in Rhode Island- and are most likely immigrants, which is a hard life. Besides...if the waitresses aren't nice enough for you, try sitting with the chefs. They have always had a friendly smile, greeting and goodbye for us. My husband and I are pretty big sushi fans, and have eaten in many Japanese restaurants of various types all over the East Coast. We have never, ever had a bad piece of fish at Sakura, which is certainly more than I can say for either Haruki. It is simple, quick, clean and fresh- and extremely reasonable. This place is OK. The food was pretty good can't complain about that BUT don't sit outside because they WILL forget about you. The waiter never came not once to check how everything was. Good thing it is BYOB!! We literally had to ask about 4 times for eel sauce before we got it! Not acceptable. We ordered the sunshine roll and the four season roll, both were delicious and fresh. We also got an order of seaweed salad, the ahiru appetizer (duck over some type of thinly sliced cabbage with special sauce), edamame, albacore maki, and the green tea and ginger ice cream. My favorite casual lunch/ dinner spot in Providence. The food is consistently great, the restaurant itself is simple but lovely, and it's on a popular street in Providence, surrounded by great little shops and cafes. Their menu is great with reasonable prices (stop in for lunch!) and the food has never let me down. There is the choice between normal seating or a sitting room where you can kick off your shoes and sit cross legged on cushions, very relaxed. There's also the front facing roofed patio, very sweet in warm weather. My only complaints would be that they generally forget to refill your water and there are misunderstandings in communication at times which can make ordering awkward and frustrating. Though I've dealt with both of these issues several times I'd say it didn't ruin the atmosphere. Overall a really nice spot and one of the best Providence has to offer. read more

My friends and I went to Sakura for brunch last week and their quality has really gone down. They've always been okay to me, but now they're "ick." I had ordered salmon sashimi, and instead of long cuts of salmon (how it's done at every other restaurant), it was served in ground up chunks on a spoon. It tasted disgusting, my friend related its taste to that of "freezer burn" (whatever that means). Thankfully the waitress took it off the bill, but not without making a snide remark in Chinese (which I understood) to her coworker. My friend's curry dish was also gross. It was watery with tons of onions and very little meat, no curry flavor at all. I will not be coming back. If anyone is on Wickenden and wants a real Japanese meal, go to Tokyo. Okay restaurant, but Sakura does not seem to understand what a reservation is... We had to wait forever to be seated. We had a group of nine people so we made a reservation with Sakura over a week in advance to make, but all the large tables were filled and the groups of people seemed like they just got there. After we waited for over half an hour, a waitress finally seated us in their enclosed porch area and pulled up a bunch of additional chairs. It was cramped to the point where people could not move their chairs without having others move as well. The staff apologized for the wait, but otherwise treated it as a normal event. Why won't anyone look at me when I come here?! The first time I waited 20 minutes downstairs since there was a line and never got acknowledged. I stupidly gave this joint another chance last week and this time I was actually seated! Yay!!!!! We got a table squished next to the register where they cash customers. Wonderful. Not to mention that the lamp above us was flickering. Struggling to pay your electricity bills there Sakura? The "waitress" (can we even call her that?) Threw down two waters on our table, causing me to flinch. And then failed to proceed to ask if we wanted any other beverages or even say hi. Are we not even seen as humans to these employees? Fast track a bit, we wait 20 minutes with our menus closed because we decided on two simple orders of 6 piece sushi. Staff passes us by multiple times but our waitress never came back to take our order or ask for drinks since we wanted to try the bubble tea. Needless to say, we skuuurted right out of there and walked out without anyone even noticing us. The employees there are aliens and/or robots. Maybe they aren't sure the purpose and objectives of what a restaurant actually is and don't understand the simple idea of acknowledging patrons and maybe even feeding them. But on this slow Thursday night with very little people in the restaurant, they were unable to act like human beings. They may even be soulless. I hope I don't give them a third try but I have a problem with not being able to let go of assholes/duds when it comes to men so this may also be a reflection of my poor restaurant choosing habits. read more

I eat here a lot. Often I just do take out but eating in also swell. Sometimes there is a language barrier but I don't find it that challenging. Beyond that, the service is great. Food is delicious. I've been to the Tokyo fish market and eaten Stop and Shop sushi so I have a good sense of quality. I think Sakura's sushi and hot meals are good and consistent. It's just a little more expensive than it has a right to be. That said, the prices haven't kept me away. The hamachi hand roll with cucumber is really good. So are the vegetable yaki soba noodles! And they work great as a filler. Hot Babe roll with plain tuna is also worth ordering. It's good. Certainly worth a try. read more

On Sunday when most restaurants in that RI area closed, forced to this restaurant covered up to be Japanese. The structure of restaurant is built upon a 2-story family house w/ one confusing stairs at front. It keeps itself like authentic Japanese by allowing some options to choose floor tables where customers would sit on floor (supposed to kneel down). The "Kari rice" (curry) is not cooked like Japanese style, but more like mixed chicken rice. The other veggie udon is totally close to Chinese stir fry style. Only the tempura is average w/ so so seafood pieces. While service of the younger servers were fine, that older lady has some black face, seemingly not willing to bring over another pair of chopsticks. Price-wise is little expensive but they make that up with larger amount of ingredients. read more

Sakura provides some of the best side dishes but is usually lacking on the main one. Their miso soup comes hot and the sauce in their salad is just right. You can choose from green tea, red bean, and ginger ice cream which are all great. I have gotten the Sakura roll here once and was impressed. The only main dish I've found "worth it" has to be their beef sukiyaki as most others choices have no sauce causing the dish to lack flavor. read more

All food brought out separate times! Would not suggest yaki soba unless you kick it up a bit with soy sauce and spices or if you prefer it kinda plain. Beef Negamaki at Seven Moons much better. Sakura has really great sushi. Its also byob - which may be needed to deal with the staff. I usually get the spicy maki dinner which comes with 18 pcs of sushi, soup, salad, and desert for about 17 bucks, which isn't bad considering the amount of food you're given. My biggest complaint when I come here is that once you order, everything comes REALLY fast, leaving you with no time to enjoy each course. Next time you're in the area, roll in with a six of your favortie brew and enjoy a fairly priced, delicious meal. read more

I love this place. I order here far too often for the health of my bank account, but the sushi is so good that it's hard to care too much - of course, only until I have no money left for more sushi. If you can't deal with the waitstaff, you should really just get over it and learn to. If you can't do that, then head to Haruki on Wayland Square where you'll be served by some ditzy caucasian and surrounded by polo shirts and stodgy sushi drowned in too much sauce. Go to Sakura, because it's worth it; everything about this place adds to the atmosphere, and if you become a regular customer then the staff WILL notice. And honestly, I've come to love the staff. I think they're great. The Unagi is awesome, and so is the Dragon Roll. The sashimi appetizer is always good. I noticed they have a new menu, and the 'Special" sushi rolls are now on the back... the Four Seasons is amazing. I love coming here with some friends and some booze - sit at a table, or on the floor. I also come here sometimes by myself, and it's a great place to do so. Walking into Sakura, you get a warm cozy hole-in-the-wall vibe that is very inviting. The service itself is not over the top, at one point we had at least three different people helping our table, which seemed rather confusing. Other than that, they had a huge array of sushi and other Japanese inspired entrees, nothing that would send me running back for seconds, but definitely decent. I liked this place a lot. The service was great, very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious! I love sushi, but I've never ordered it. I'm always with a friend or family member who knows more about Japanese food and helps me out. Last night, I met up with two other novices, and we had to figure it out for ourselves. We were looking for vegetable sushi, and our waitress took time to explain the options on the menu, and then gave us the time to think it over before ordering. Not being rushed is a wonderful thing! The entire experience was relaxing, from being seated to getting the check. Nothing rushed, everything served in a timely fashion, and friendly inquiries from time to time to be sure we had what we wanted. When my friend suggested Sakura, I looked up the reviews on Yelp, and almost suggested going elsewhere because of the comments on the poor service. I am glad I didn't. From our arrival, when we were looking for the other member of our party, the staff was helpful and friendly. Several staff scouted around, they all worked well together, and altogether, it was a comfortable and hospitable atmosphere. Great food and a wonderful time add up to five stars! I hope to go back soon to try some of the other dishes on the menu. read more
