The outdoor seating area is really cute. Indoor seating could be a bit loud. Service is generally good. My biggest complaint about this place is the inconsistency of the food. Some days, the food is amazing and some days, I have to send it back. I usually order my food with less salt. The last time I came here, they told me it was not possible to prepare my pad see ew with any less salt or soy sauce. This baffled me, pour less soy sauce and/or use less salt. I have been to this restaurant a few times with family, and friends, and we usually like the food there. We went again today and tried some lunch specials for the first time. Lunch special Pad Thai, and chicken yellow curry ard pretty good, but the portion were very small. We also ordered seafood tomyum soup, and fish pieces in the soup were rotten. I let the waitress know, and she said they can fix it, and swiftly took the soup. She brought back the soup, and I don't know what they change, but the fish still tasted rotten. When a different waitress brought the check, I let her know about the rotten fish in the soup. She noded, and brought back the credit card slip to sign for a full bill. I picked some squid and crab legs, and brought back home to share with my brother and he immediately tasted thd rotten food. They probably change some fish in the soup, but most likely their whole batch of seafood is gone bad already. I know seafood is a little expensive, but you cannot serve rotten food to customers. You need to toss it. And you should not charge on rotten food. read more

I grew up eating here for most of my life. I've watched them change from a warehouse hole in the wall joint to what it it is today. The food has always been delicious and consistent. Everything here is delicious and service is great. These days they really fucked up the pricing and portions. You don't get much value for what you're paying. $6 each for a small bowl of Tom Kha? Disappointed. Have eaten here and ordered out many times in the last 5+ years. Today ordered delivery and everything was off. They have downsized their containers so the two orders of curry were approximately half the size of normal. The green curry which is normally super flavorful was really under seasoned. So much so, that my husband added some green curry seasoning from our shelf to jazz it up. Finally the chicken in the pad Thai was over cooked and the noodles were softer than they should have been. All in all, not the meal we expected and have had many times in the past. We decided to try a new dish, fried catfish filet, and it came out to be 4 tiny soggy fish sticks for $14.00! We went to have lunch at Saladang classic today. My friend and I had chicken satae and the Pad Thai on the lunch menu. We're there when the restaurant was a bit full house, but the servers took their time to explain each dish to us and focusing on my allergies concerns. The food came out very yummy, and they made it the way I wanted. All I would say this is the perfect spot for your quick lunch or it could be a place to sit down and chill with your friends--decent price, attentive and friendly service, yummy food and good ambiance. There's such a wealth in West Los Angeles, whether it be money, traffic, high-end stores, or restaurants. Be that as it may, but I found a wealth of flavor in a very good Thai restaurant in Pasadena, called Saladang. Much to my surprise, a friend of mine, who lives in West L.A., suggested we dine in Pasadena since I usually dine on the west side on the weekends. Saladang was very busy last Saturday evening, but they didn't disappoint. When we arrived, I didn't see an empty table in the restaurant, but the host graciously found an available table. The wonderful aroma in this place was almost enough to satisfy my hunger. Our waitress came with our menus and she was most friendly. I selected the Spicy Beef Fried Rice and my friend had the Pad Thai dish with chicken, and we also ordered vegetable egg rolls as an appetizer. Within less than ten minutes, our food arrived with much aromatic steam. My food was so flavorful, not overly spicy, consisted of tender pieces of beef, and the rice was good and darkened like the kind I'm accustomed to seeing back east. In the midst of our dinner, the table across from ours ordered some type of banana desserts that came with flames of fire on it, and it was all too impressive, as almost every diner at the table grabbed their camera to take pictures of their desserts. Overall, I'm a fan of Saladang. The staff is friendly and down-to-earth. This restaurant is casual but has a certain flair about it, given the service and scale of architecture. Also, their menu is reasonably priced. Well, if you're ever in the mood for some good Thai food, Saladang is certainly a worthy option. read more

The great reputation of Saladang has been reverberating on Yelp for quite some time. I went to Pasadena with fellow Yelper Tony Y Jr. looking for this culinary wonder, and the evidence of their popularity was obvious with what appears to be a large dining hall packed full of people. The ambiance was dim with a shaded grey thematic décor that situates three rows of tables vertically arranged and spatially coordinated with paintings that come to a break in the middle with a beautiful bouquet of flowers to personify its simple elegance. The noise level was high, and we were fortunate enough to get seated right away without having to wait. We ordered the Barbeque Pork ($7.95) which the menu described as "Thai style", arrived with two humongous pieces of thick juicy pork chops served on a sizzling pan smothered with a yellow sauce blended with coconut milk, curry, and peanut sauce. It was something I've never seen before, and after verifying the dish with the server, I proceeded to ask which region this dish came from: Me: "Is this Northern or Southern Thai cuisine?" *pointing to the pork chops* Server: "It's Thai style and it's spicy". Me: "How come I've never seen anything like it?" Server: "There are many different kinds of Thai barbeques. Have you heard of sate, you know, the kind that comes in a skewer? It's pork with sate sauce on it" Me: "Oh, I see". I didn't get the answer I was looking for, and had I wanted sate I would have ordered it from their appetizer section on the menu. The pork chop did not embody any marinade and charbroiled texture, and the yellow sauce was too sweet, moderately spicy, overflowing, and wasn't effectively cooked into the pork chops. We also ordered the Catfish ($16.95) which came golden fried with everything intact. The fish was huge and meaty and could use some seasoning since it didn't come with a spicy dressing that typically accompanies this dish. The side of fish sauce and soy sauce were too dull to do anything to enhance the flavors, and even spoons after spoons of a very dull prik nam pla did not generate an enriching experience. In addition, I find the Beef Fried Rice ($7.95) needed to be fried a little longer in higher heat to bring out the airy fluffy texture. The overall taste was passable, but the lack of spiciness failed to give depth. The food here was just not very good when compared to the bold exciting flavors of Jitlada, Siam Chan, Sai Jai Thai, and Lers Ros. Service was full of smiley faces but none of the servers could fully address the issues I was experiencing with the authenticity of their dishes. In spite of my criticisms, the ingredients they used were fresh and colorful and the festive ambiance is suitable for those looking for gateway dishes that patterns itself after heavily Americanized rendition of Thai cuisine. For those interested, I suggest to come for dinner since I also find their lunch specials to be far more expensive than what you'll find at Siam Chan. I won't be coming back since I couldn't find the rich indulging flavors that I was looking for. Depending on how you look at it, fusion or Americanization, the taste of Thai cuisine has been greatly compromised at Saladang. read more

This is probably one of my favorite non authentic Thai restaurants. What do I like to get from Saladang? -Deep Cried Catfish: They serve the fish as a whole fish...that means with head and tail =P Don't say the fish is staring at you...my friends told me that before. It is served with 2 sauces. -Sizzling Beef: yummy slices of steak in sizzling plate. -Beef Panang: One of my favorite!! -Duck Salad: slices of duck in spicy and tangy salad dressing. -Pad Thai: I prefer pad see ew but my family likes it here. -Deep fried banana: deep fried banana that looks like rambutan (with shredded coconut) dipped in rum and honey then flambed @ your table. Food was tasty and brought to us quickly. I think I know why. The place closes at 8pm on Friday/Saturday. We got there at 7pm and we were rushed the entire time. At 8:08 we were asked to leave as they were closing up shop. They weren't rude, but they weren't apologetic either. This restaurant serves more traditional Thai food, Saladang Song next door specializes in Fusion and is less popular. Pad Thai noodles was warm and soft, true sign of quality. Sizzling Beef came with smoke and fireworks, literally! Beef melted in my mouth along with sweet sweet peanut sauce. The coconut seafood soup came out in a creamy broth with large de-skinned shrimp and pieces of Alaskan King crab leg. My only complain is that the waitresses weren't very nice and not very attentive. Came here for dinner on a Wed. night and it was pretty packed! I really liked the ambiance and setup of the place. The high ceilings, dim lighting, and modern decor give this place an extra star! It's a casual yet somewhat nice place to eat with friends or on a date. Parking is also plentiful because they have their own lot which is pretty rare near Old Town Pasadena! Drink: Thai Iced Tea. Yummy! Definitely one of the better ones I've had! I hate the kind that taste like medicine! But this one was sweet and delish! Appetizer: stuffed chicken wings. It was really bland and pretty tasteless and it came with ketchup on the side. Not too big of a fan. Next time, skip! Entree: Pad Thai. One of the better ones I've had but not the best. Definitely better than those small delivery Thai places! But I think overall, Jitlada in Thai Town does Thai food best! Very AUTHENTIC and flavorful! "Dessert": They gave us free dinner mints that were individually wrapped in these cute colorful wrappers. But.. it tasted HORRIBLE! REVIEW FOR SALADANG SONG NOT SALADANG (my bad!) I think people like this place because the ambiance is clean, modern, and makes you feel like you just entered a tropical resort's restaurant. I was disappointed when I saw the menu because of the prices. For a curry chicken with rice (which I had to pay extra for), I had to pay about $12 with my meal. I'd recommend going to Banana Bay or Coconut Bay for cheap and good Thai food. The food is good, but not worth it for the price. Definitely a good place to impress someone for lunch though (ie: work lunch or lunch date) because of the ambiance. read more

Saladang is well-known for catering to more non-asian customers - and therefore criticized for not being very authentic. I've always thought the food here is good, but is priced a bit higher than other Thai restaurants. As usual, I got the spicy fried rice with scallops (always excellent) and not too spicy. We also tried the Chicken Noodles which is a platter of sauteed rice noodles with chicken and veggies (very similar to Pad See ew). You can ask for less oil for all the dishes and they will happily accommodate. For dessert we got the Mango Sticky Rice which is covered with a sweet and creamy coconut sauce. I really like this dessert, but the sauce was a little too thick and sweet and got in the way of the chewy rice. Parking is tricky during peak lunch and dinner hours even though its in a private lot because they share with Saladang Song next door. read more

Alright, I've been here 3 times, and I don't understand why people love this so much. I came here years ago when it first open, the food was mediocre - and the shrimp was just bad - this must have been sometime in 98/99. I came back last year, and got the mussels(along with other mediocre food yet again) - how were the mussels? UN-F'NG COOKED. 2 of them were properly cooked and I had to send back the rest - they must have literally pried open the shell, because the shells could have not opened themselves that wide if they weren't cooked. Today I went yet again (I know, I'm just asking for trouble aren't I?) to just pick up a Thai Iced Tea. I paid the $3.24 which seems on par with the rest of the prices, and after I got back my change, I turned around and waited for a minute, only to turn back and see they gave me a leaking CHILD'S CUP (see photo). $3.24 for a child's cup? Are you kidding me? They replaced my leaking child's cup with another child's cup. Overpriced, overrated, unsanitary. I did happen to call Pasadena health inspection after the uncooked mussel incident, and they were cited for improper cooking and handling of food - apparently it wasn't just my food, it happened a few times. So if you like uncooked food, feel free to come back here. Otherwise, go elsewhere - City Thai and Chandra's are better (and fully cooked) places near by. read more

My friend's wanted to eat Thai after a Dance competition at PCC, so we decided to come out here and try it out. Pulling into the place with parking can be limited if its a busy night. When we walked in we asked for a table of 5 and they took a lil while and when they seated us it was for a table of 12 as they misunderstood us. They had to give us a new table and finally had that fixed. I ended up ordering Tom Khai Gai that I would rate maybe a 3 of 10 as the flavor wasn't great, for my plate I got a Sizzling Beef that was kinda hard and really wasn't satisfied with taste. Would not come here again and would try out other places if I was in the area. read more

Not my first choice for Thai food, but my mom is in love with this place. I only make the trip out here whenever she is in the mood for some whole deep fried catfish. Otherwise, I usually stick to the Thai restaurants around Arcadia, since they're usually good enough to satisfy my own Thai cravings. For starters, we decided to go with the Chicken Satay. Moist, juicy and succulent, this chicken satay was one of the best that I've ever eaten, since a lot of places end up serving chicken pieces that are too dry or stringy. The sweet, yellow curry flavor brushed generously on top of the chicken paired deliciously with the peanut sauce. This was definitely the highlight of our meal. Unfortunately, from there, it went a little downhill. Now, as for the centerpiece, of course, we must have the Deep Fried Catfish every time we come here. For this dish, you get a whole catfish, head and all, fried to a perfect crisp, along with two dipping sauces (soy sauce and green cilantro sauce). The way they present the dish is very simple. In fact, a little too simple. I felt like the fish could've used more seasoning since I really wasn't able to taste much else besides fried catfish skin. Catfish meat itself is already super mild, so in order to even get any depth of flavor, I had to slather it in sweet and sour sauce, which cost extra by the way. We also had the Pad Thai and the Green Curry. Reminiscent of omurice, the pad thai came wrapped inside of a fried egg, giving it little twist. However, this was more for the novelty, since I found that it didn't make do much to enhance the dish. The sauce was a bit too tangy and sour for my taste and I would've preferred it to be a tad bit sweeter. I barely touched the Green curry since I'm not really a fan of that particular curry anyway. Like I said, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here as I believe that there are better Thai restaurants out there for a better price. If you come here, be prepared to shell out a little more than you would in your average neighborhood Thai restaurant. read more

This restaurant is located in a small lot right next to another Thai restaurant (must be owned by the same people, as the names sound very similar). The parking lot is rather small but you can park on the street (free). Anyways, I came here with my husband to have dinner one evening. The lighting was rather dim with the decor being quite minimal. After browsing the menu, we ordered: Papaya Pok Pok, $5.95 prior to tax: I really thought this salad would be refreshing and tasty, but felt that it lacked flavor. Presentation of this salad was pretty and colorful though. Chicken Pad Thai, $7.95 prior to tax: I thought this noodle dish was pretty good. This dish was served with each component of the dish separated. So like the noodles was placed in one part of the plate, the chicken in another part, the bean sprouts in another, etc. I would have preferred for the restaurant to mix it all together (but it seems like this is a common practice for other Thai restaurants to serve it in this manner). I wouldn't say this was the best Pad Thai that I have ever had, but it really pretty good. Fried Vegetable Rolls, $4.95 prior to tax: A little on the oily side, but that is to be expected for anything fried at a restaurant. Thought these vegetable rolls were okay, but a little bland. Thai Iced Tea, $2.95 prior to tax: My husband ordered this and enjoyed it. I didn't have any. Service in general was good, as our water glasses were refilled during our meal. But overall, just thought the food was just decent and not incredibly memorable. But I did happen to see their lunch menu and their lunch specials seem like a good deal.
