While I waited for my takeout order, he offered me a glass of water, which was especially appreciated after a busy morning of volunteering. Given that I was already making a second trip because of the hair in my meal, I thought the restaurant might extend the courtesy of comping the $5 side of rice. Instead, I was charged for it. The charge itself wasn't the main issue--it was the principle. After having to drive an hour round trip because of a mistake with my original meal, I felt that waiving the cost of a small side of rice would have been a reasonable gesture of goodwill.
