Heard Salerno's was for sale or was going to be sold, so when I was back in Scranton my family placed a pickup order for old time's sake. This was never the best pizzeria in Old Forge but I've probably eaten here a hundred times and have spent 15 years defending it, so it holds significance in my food journey. The late 2025 experience was between sad and insulting. Flat dough on 3 pizzas, chintzy toppings, only half the soup container was filled and didn't include bread, sloppy sandwich, and the woman on the phone sounded like she wished she had retired five years ago. Nobody ever said that this was the most consistent restaurant in Old Forge, but when your restaurant reaches the point where you're dragging down the reputation of the town's food scene, I think it's time to close. read more

There was a sign to be patient as they are short staffed--which is fair but you should pay your employees a fair wage & they'll want to work. Slow to get food but i felt rushed to finish. Great locals pizza & italian joint serving old forge style pizza. Very cool vibe, owner greeted us and was very welcoming! Refreshing to see in person dining finally! (Spaced out accordingly) We went on an Old Forge style pizza crawl, Salerno's was our final stop and by far our favorite! Like that you can order "cuts" (rectangle slices) vs having to order a whole tray if you want to try multiple slices which we did. Ordered a white piece, 1 plain and 1 sausage, pepperoni and mushroom. All 3 were amazing but the plain and S,P,M were my favs. Crust is VERY light BUT crisp on the bottom, however they cook it, its impressive. Couldn't believe how light and fluffy yet crisp it was! Homemade sausage was outstanding, amazing flavor! Kids split the honey fried chicken which I stole some of and it was outstanding! Quality ingredients, good friendly service, great pies, nice big menu with lots of options; it was busy but everything came out fast. Highly recommended!! read more

This was my third and final pizza stop on my pizza crawl through Old Forge. AI was told by several people in town that I needed to check out Salerno's Cafe. There is a dining room in the back, but most of the people seemed to congregate inside the dark bar located in the first room when you walk inside. Out of the three spots I visited (including Revello's and Arcaro & Genell), I felt that Salerno's had the most casual vibe. Basically, a sports bar with good pizza and a lot of dark wood. There was also a wall full of signed photographs from various sports players. Clearly, I have zero knowledge about sports. Otherwise, I'd call out a few prominently featured on the wall! Though, I did recognize Mohamed Ali. I ordered the standard cuts just like at the previous stops: 1 red and 1 white. Salerno's also has had a lot of media attention and was even included in the book Roadfood as one of the best spots to eat in the country. I could see the draw -- and why it held such a special place for locals. It's like Old Forge's version of Cheers. While I enjoyed the other two pizza stops more, I'm glad that I tried it. And the total price for two slices was just $3.30 total. You certainly can't beat the price. read more

If it's Sunday and you're in Old Forge, PA the place to go for pizza is Salerno's. But in this context "pizza" may not be what you think it is. Old Forge pizza comes in two distinct and unusual form: red or white. For me, white is where it's at. Old Forge white is a double crust pie cooked in a rectangular pan, stuffed with a blend of cheeses, topped with a sprinkling of herbs. At Salerno's there may be a wisp of paper thin onion slivers gracing the top crust as well. How this is "pizza" is beyond me. It feels more like a calzone. The less gracious may liken it to a hot pocket. Whatever you want to call it, the white is delicious. It is also really really heavy and filling. Fortunately, you can order it by the cut. One cut is more than sufficient for me. Unfortunately, at at Salerno's if you want the white with broccoli, you cannot order it by the cut, you have to get a full sheet. So if you're traveling by yourself, and you don't want to deal with a tremendous quantity of leftovers, no white broccoli for you. Thus, I've never had Salerno's white broccoli. I've seen pictures. It's on the menu. It looks delicious. You know, now that I think of it, next time I may just order a sheet, eat a slice, and give the rest to the locals who are always at the bar. Because more than anything, Salerno's is a local hangout. And while you may feel like an interloper walking through, everyone there has always been friendly and welcoming. Oh. Also it's good to be aware that reheating a cut of white can take longer than one might think. Those things are dense, and the kitchen wants to make sure the whole cut is heated through. read more

Yuck. Someone online recommended this pizza to me as having the best Old Forge style pizza (rectangular, thicker crust). Old Forge is supposedly the Pizza Capital of the World. I got two for my Boyfriend's 40th birthday. It was disgusting. The cheese wasn't actual cheese and stuck to our teeth. Really disappointing. He is a pizza eating champion (actually) and we were so excited to try... Great pizza, nice beer selection, and good prices. We sat at the bar while our to-go order was being made. The bar area is cozy with a lot of wood--makes it feel warm and inviting. The service was fast & friendly. We got a tray of red with spicy sausage and sweet peppers and a tray of stuffed white. The red was delicious and we enjoyed the combination we chose. The crust is buttery and has a nice chew. The stuffed white is SO yummy. Old Forge is the only area I've been to that does American cheese on a pizza. It's different, but it works particularly well in the stuffed crust pizza. The top crust is sprinkled with herbs & onion slivers and the American cheese inside gets super gooey. I've been eating at Salerno's for DECADES but two recent encounters have changed my desire to ever eat their food again. Waitress puts plate of wings on a table then goes back to the table after customers have touched the food and picks it up saying, oops wrong table! Takes it to another table. During Covid....seriously gross. Viewed through open kitchen doorway, Same server drops plastic cups on the floor then proceeds to fill them with ice and soda while she wipes her nose on the back of her hand. Cook reaches in with ungloved hand to grab handful of sliced cucumbers from the salad prep area shoves them in his mouth then grabs some tomatoes to eat with the same hand. It's pretty much half bar and half restaurant type area. My boyfriend and I entered from the bar side for lunch around 12:30 and it was SO dark. At first I thought it was just a bar but there was a restaurant area which was more lit in the back. When we got there there was no one in the restaurant area which seemed a little concerning. We order onion rings and 3 cuts of red pizza. The onion rings were very good. The pizza was okay. It's apparently a specific type of pizza for the area so I wasn't sure if I just didn't like the type or that specific one. This is the best "Old Forge" style pizza around. Seriously. I tried quiet a few other places during my years at a nearby college, but nothing ever came equal this. I can't judge their other foods, just the pizza. It has a crispy bottom, fluffy dough, perfect sauce and a wonderful combo of cheeses that makes it unbeatable. Also a plus, it's not very greasy like many other pizzas. I've moved from the area recently, and whenever we are visiting friends we always make it a point to go there. (It's secretly the highlight of visiting people that live nearby lol!) Edit: According to wikipedia the definition of "Old Forge Pizza" is: "This pizza is typically rectangular in shape with a balanced tangy sauce, and topped with a creamier cheese, similar to fontina or white American, on a crispy thicker crust. Salernos has always been and will always be my favorite old forge pizza. Period. Plain with crushed peppers, can't beat it.

While I appreciate the pride that locals take in their idiosyncratic cuisine, the appeal of Old Forge style pizza is lost on me. The main distinction of "Old Forge style" is the chewy, unnatural cheese, the sort of thing usually found topping frozen supermarket pizza. ("Nardone Bros." frozen pizza is another local "delicacy" much extolled for reasons of nostalgia more than actual merit.) The pizza dough is bready and drier than most. The pizza at Salerno's is as good as any in Old Forge, it is not awful by any means. But it is an acquired taste that might be difficult to acquire. The place is quite busy and the prices are reasonable. Aside from pizza, the rest of the menu is run-of-the-mill Italian-esque. Worth a trip for the curious. read more

Servers are known to skip over customers which been sitting and waiting while people just seated are waited on first. finally, the owner should take a look at his window sills, their filthy, dirty, and that all falls onto your food. again the NO LOCKS on mens bathroom door is defentily a healthcode violation especially if a child is in there and a man walks in especially when that man is likely drunk seeing bar and resteraunt share same bathroom. read more
