Rich dark green velvet draperies and god accents and the bar -- it's so mid century modern and beautiful but not overkill. Perfect. Both my husband and I had pasta dishes which were flavorful, cheesy (but not greasy) drizzled with herb-infused olive oil-- a nice touch that added even more Italian goodness. For a starter we had fried calamari (which was tender, not chewy -like it can be at lower end places ) It came with a marinara dipping sauce that was so excellent we ordered extra. While a beautiful concept and exquisite design and details, Luca just didn't quite meet the mark. Only being open for a short period of time I did expect some kinks. The side door entrance to the restaurant needs to be fixed. Almost every customer who came and pulled on the door could not get it open. The air conditioning was not working very well so our server was sweating, his shirt was drenched on his back, and I saw another staff member using a menu to fan themselves. The food was decent. To start we had the burrata with focaccia, it was fine but it does not even compare to Bettola's. The rigatoni was good and I appreciated the portion size. For dessert I had cannoli, while it looks beautiful it just was not what I was expecting. The shell was too soft and mushy so it just fell apart and I accidentally ate some of the paper doily it was plated on. I plan on revisiting in about 6 months to a year to see how they have improved. But for now, if you are looking for an Italian dinner in Birmingham I would suggest the following: Bettola, Gianmarcos, Amore, or Trattoria Zaza. read more

Walking up to the restaurant I loved the outdoor patio area with access to the bar. Once the weather warms up I know this will be a great spot to come enjoy some drinks and food. They also have a store in which you can purchase fresh pasta and other items. The dining room is pretty large filled with tables and there is a bar that has a large window that opens to their bar seating outside and the patio area. I ordered a gimlet to drink which was delicious once I received it. The meatballs were good only they came out warm not hot. Since the flavor was there I know if I was to order again and received hot they would be amazing. The pasta was good and since they make it fresh you have to try it. As the restaurant was in its first opening weeks I knew that service was still working out its kinks so I did not hold the "warm" food against them as some of the other items arrived hot. We had a party of 2, and a reservation for 7:30- but didn't get sat until 7:50. I had a sangria and the bucatini all'amatriciana. The food came quickly and was decent, our waiter was good. But the place is just so loud. I went here for dinner to catch up with a friend but I couldn't hear them talking right next to me. Echo is really bad and it's hard to hear anything in there. Also check the prices on your receipt- I ordered a sangria for 10$ on the menu but 11$ on my bill?. Probably won't be back. read more

Ambiance outside is great but the food is very mediocre. This is our second time trying out Luca and we were hoping for a better outcome. We started with the focaccia and it was dry, the Tri colore salad was wayyyy too lemony. It was basically a sour salad and the grilled chicken was dry. Lastly, we had the rigatoni and it had good flavor but the sausage was very oddly cut. It looked like sliced meat patties. If I could give this place zero stars I would. To start off, I walk into the most unprofessional and clueless hostess I have ever seen in a so called "fine dining" restaurant. We got sat at a cute both in the back corner of the restaurant, just the two of us and I could barely hear the person sitting across from me. Our server came over, and she was very sweet although I don't remember her name. She started us off with water and took our cocktail order, the drinks came out promptly and they were very good. We started off the meal with the fried carbonara and the luca chopped salad. The fried carbonara was their take on a deep fried pasta and to say it was under seasoned, bland, and soggy was an understatement. We were next served the luca chopped salad and talk about soggy, old, wilted lettuce, you would think that a salad that cost $12 it would at least be fresh!! For our next course, we had the lasagna and the grilled gulf fish. This was the most mediocre lasagna I have had, it had a "bolognese" sauce with a couple pieces of wilted basil on top, the worst part of this dish was, it was cold in the middle. I could've saved myself some money and bought a stouffers frozen lasagna for a fourth the price with a better flavor profile. On to the snapper now. The snapper was dry and overcooked and came with a pathetic excuse of a "side salad" that consisted of fennel, grapefruit and olives. For $38, I really expected a lot more from them. Me and my partner love to enjoy a nice dinner and don't mind spending money on something good, but this. This was beyond unacceptable. We could've gotten better food at Taco Mama for half the price. When we expressed our concerns to the manager, I think his name was Adam or Andy, he seemed disinterested in what we had to say and annoyed at the fact that we stopped him. Whatever his name is, even had the nerve to speak over me as I was talking as an attempt to make me look stupid and juvenile with the smell of liquor reeking from his breathe. As a poor attempt the pacify us, they sent us over "free" desserts, but still charged us for the desserts. As we were walking out with out $128 check, we looked back one more time to see Andy or whatever his name is mocking someone to another sever by making sounds of what would be a disabled person. That was enough for us to see, we will never be coming back here, and to anyone else reading this review. I suggest you don't even bother. read more

Alright I don't know why Luca is only getting 3.5 stars right now. Seems like people think it's too loud but that's just because the wine is flowing and it's a super fun time. Food delivers, service was great, and the ambiance is all there. This will be a Homewood staple for a long time and was much needed for the area. We started with the orange blossom - tasted like a mouthful of skittles which isn't my wife and I's favorite thing (sweet drinks) but it still didn't stop us. Or how about no music playing that interferes with the dining experience? The crime of this place was bread is not served! It is 5 dollars! I have never been to an authentic Italian restaurant where bread is not part of any meal! I didn't see any small salad on menu and I hesitate to return when there are two better Italian restaurants in Homewood. All that being said the rigatoni arrabbiata was good. I had saw this restaurant via TikTok and knew I had to give it a try. Luca exceeded our expectations. Our server, T, was amazing, she was kind, generous and very attentive! The food... Lawd have mercy! T, our server, was kind enough to bring us a complimentary serving of the Luca Fries and let's just say they will be ordered during our next visit. We also got the fried mozzarella and pepperoni pizza as well, these were also amazing, tasteful and fresh. The wine was also amazing and paired very well with the food and they have a wide variety of choices between red and white! Lastly, the ambience, beautiful interior with tasteful decor and design. This was a perfect place for a date and would also be great for a girls night or even a solo trip! The little market up front was also very nice and I learned about their Wine Club, which I am considering heavily. It appears they were understaffed, so can chalk this up to being new and not being properly staffed. Nice decor with beautiful bar. Dessert cannolis and gelato were excellent. Need some SERIOUS sound dampening materials installed. None of the 4 of us could hear each other talking without shouting while sitting 2 feet across from each other for our 7pm dinner. There is no Italian ownership even though they've made it appear that way. The owners went on a lavish vacation and monetized Italian inspiration and well as named the restaurant after a purebred Italian dog they won at auction. Way overpriced!!! Very limited menu. I can understand that a salad is not served with an entree, since this seems to be the trend lately, but charging $5.00 for bread is ridiculous!! If you are looking for a good neighborhood Italian restaurant that has an extensive menu and serves bread with the meal, try Napoli in Vestavia.
