I am so happy to say that I have tried Luca. We ordered the fried carbonara, focaccia + evoo, bucatini, rigatoni, & tri colore salad. The carbonara was definitely unique, but average. The focaccia is absolutely incredible. The rigatoni was good (could definitely tell it is homemade pasta) but the portion was incredibly large. The service was exceptional. I read past reviews saying they were understaffed but this was far from the case for us. The restaurant itself was in a beautiful building. It is large so I can see why others were complaining of a loud environment. The tables around us were noisy, but the restaurant itself seemed normal. Overall, I would say this restaurant is good. The pasta and food were good. The drinks were exceptional. We will definitely be stopping by the market to buy fresh pasta and grab gelato. I think Luca is worth trying. read more

I went here on Wednesday after work and surprisingly it was only a 15 minute wait. I ordered red wine and a Moscato which the server recommended. Both were very great and paired very well with our pasta. The silver also recommended us her favorite: The Agnolotti and the Malfadine. we waited around 20 to 30 minutes for our food, and the server was very attentive filling our drinks. It was very loud and hard to hear the other person which was kind of embarrassing since we had to raise our voice. The Agnolotti had a strong lemony taste. The service and ambiance of this place is great. I thought the food was below average. We started with the Strawberry Burrata, which was so-so, nothing to rave about. For entree we got a Margherita Pizza and the Agnolotti. The Margherita pizza was good but nothing special, I've had much better. The Agnolotti was extremely salty and portion size was very small. We also got Campanelle to go, which was also mediocre. For dessert, my niece got an Affogato, which she said was also meh! Came here for dinner on the first week that it opened! There's plenty of parking out front and a nice little outdoor patio area as well which I'm not sure if it's part of the restaurant since no one was sitting there when we came. The place was PACKED when we got there and I'm glad we had reservations. I'm not sure if they do walk ins? We ended up ordering Campanelle and the mushroom potato pizza and sharing the meals. I thought the pasta was good and flavorful but the pizza had an overwhelming taste of thyme. Not sure if I loved that herb on there but that will probably be my only complaint. We dressed up for dinner but it's not super fancy or anything by any means. Pretty sure if you wore jeans that would be fine too. Service was very quick! Everything about Luca in my opinion is great. Drinks, apps, entrees, etc. I rarely go for dinner but go quite a bit for lunch and sit at the bar and work. Every time I go back, their lunch menu becomes more expensive with smaller portions. This year last time I could get a slice of pizza and a side for $11. The next time I went it changed to a few entree choices and a side for $16. This past time I went they changed the menu to one of 4 sandwiches for $16 and a side for an extra $4. They also had a choice of a sandwich, a side and a scoop of gelato for $25. I am not one to complain about quality food but the prices behind this make no sense. I got the Italian sandwich and it was basically a 6 inch sub cut in half. Overall my bill was $20 including a $2 tip. Unless they make a change to their lunch menu I will not be going back to these ridiculous prices. read more

The servers and food were great-- one of our friends ordered a meal that was served a little cold, and the server quickly took it back and had a new dish served in a matter of minutes. We almost didn't come because the reviews online weren't good so let's get these stars up! Cause this place is so great. The decor is adorable. I don't drink and they had a great non-alcoholic wine that I loved. My mom and I shared the summer tomatoes which were delicious. And then I got the pepperoni pizza and it was perfection. This beats the pizza we have in Chicago. Don't tell them I said that. I got it because it was suggested by (my favorite part of our experience) our server Jane Ellen (hopefully I spelled her name right). She was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu but really knew how to sell the food. It didn't sound like something she had memorized, you could tell she loved it. We had a great time! Luca is a fairly new restaurant to us, and it is a nice change of pace from the usual casual bistro one finds closer into to Birmingham proper. They have a good market (wine, Italian sundries, cured meats, cheeses, fresh pasta, gelato) with some very interesting a tasty choices. The restaurant is very open, casual, and offers a good mix of group seating options and more intimate tables and booths. The atmosphere is inviting, although in our last trip the music was loud enough that two old deaf people could no longer hear each other in a normal tone. Tables are simply set - no clutter like S&P shakers, red pepper flakes or flowers, etc. The menu is interesting, offering some unusual appetizers, good salads, pasta plates, a few Segundi dishes, and pizza. Lunch has some great sandwiches - the porchetta is especially good. Our first visit a couple of months ago was at about 1 PM. We each had a signature cocktail, a glass of red wine with the food. The meatball appetizer was very good, definitely nice introduction to the main meal. I ordered the Rigatoni, my partner the beef and pork Bolognese. Both were excellent - I make Bolognese frequently, and theirs was different (the flavors of the veg were not balanced with the rest of the dish) but there was a distinctly umami quality (demi glace?) along with a slightly too buttery flavor. Still quite good, however, and heads & shoulders above most anything else we've tried in BHM in quite a few years. The Rigatoni was also quite good, but again strong butter finish (not a bad thing IMO). We didn't have a dessert, but left quite pleased with the meal. This was an A- meal, no significant complaints except it did take a while between visits from the server. Our second visit was a stark contrast to our first. My wife ordered the signature spritz - still excellent - but I ordered their Vesper. Apparently they think adding cider vinegar to a classic martini in a tiny coupe glass was a good idea. It was NOT. IDK if they simply floated the vinegar on top of the martini, but it was so overwhelming I could not get past a couple of sips. $15 down the toilet. We ordered appetizers - she had the tri color salad, which was quite flavorful, I had the Grande Beans, which was very tasty but the pancetta was way overcooked, like biting down on something very hard. Definitely need some tweaking there. Our entrees arrived too quickly, leaving us with half-finished appetizers that were set aside. Wife again got the Bolognese, I the "White Bolognese", which is really just pasta in a creamy mushroom sauce. First blush impressions: way over seasoned, the pepper almost choking heavy, and the salt way too pronounced. There was none of the lusciousness of the Bolognese sauce this time, and definitely no buttery or umami finish. My pasta sauce, while again tasty, was unidimensional and far too thick and gloppy. We both got to go boxes, but my wife decided later that day that hers was not worth a re-eat. Our wine was a nice Montepulciano, well balanced, a good "drinking wine" with our meal. We both had coffee, and she had a gelato, which she said was divine - plus one at the finish! Overall, this was a C+ experience, making me wonder if the "chef" was just too young/inexperienced (I noticed he could not seem to stay in the kitchen). Wait staff was pleasant, but seemed very rushed, even though the restaurant was mostly empty - yet she had plenty of time to scroll on her phone. Go figure. I guess our late arrival should have given us a clue as to what we'd experience (B Team, anyone?). I would still recommend this restaurant to others, but I think I'd try to figure out when the A Team is in the kitchen. Maybe evenings on Thu-Sat? read more

We ate there for the first time tonight. The food was delicious. We had the meatballs for the first course. My husband got the rigatoni and I got the gulf snapper. The server was very attentive. The only negative I would add was that it was extremely noisy. The restaurant was full. They had the music turned up loud and with all the people talking, it was strain to have a conversation with the other couple we were dining with. The music was very annoying and not what you would expect in an Italian restaurant-sounded more like a disco club. I would suggest to just turn the music off or put something on more conducive to dining. The noise is the reason I did not give five stars. read more

Was (and still am) so excited about this place!! The service needs a little work, but that's to be expected of a BRAND NEW restaurant. The mimosas were refreshing and had fresh squeezed OJ, appetizer fries were so so good (easily the best part), the meals were tasty and fresh, and the affogato was a good way to end the meal. The waiters did not have any recommendations for us as first timers and didn't seem to know the menu because they couldn't describe any dish to us. So maybe we ordered the wrong things but what we got was not good. We ordered the roasted beets, fried carbonara, mozzarella sticks, burrata, snapper crudo, margherita pizza, lasagna, and bolognese pasta. The best thing was the lasagna. However the pizza was meh, the beets tasted straight of of the can, and everything else just was disappointing. Rich dark green velvet draperies and god accents and the bar -- it's so mid century modern and beautiful but not overkill. Perfect. Both my husband and I had pasta dishes which were flavorful, cheesy (but not greasy) drizzled with herb-infused olive oil-- a nice touch that added even more Italian goodness. For a starter we had fried calamari (which was tender, not chewy -like it can be at lower end places ) It came with a marinara dipping sauce that was so excellent we ordered extra. I've got mixed feelings on this place. The good- It's aesthetically appealing. Love the design, decor, colors, outdoor patio, front small shop to take home olive oil, wine or sandwiches to go. Our server was awesome!! She went above and beyond explaining a lot about different menu items & answering any questions we had with a smile. She was genuinely lovely! The meh- I won't say bad... but I wasn't impressed with the food. It's possible we ordered the wrong thing.. but we got the Luca chop salad which is an Italian salad with salami & Italian dressing. Simple, good... but nothing that would make me remember to get it again or recommend it. My husband said it reminded him of the Olive Garden salad. We also got the half roast chicken. It was good! But nothing stood out to me. I can make the same thing at home very easily. We also got the tiramisu. This is a personal preference, but I don't like when places do different things with tiramisu. Leave it as it's supposed to be... it's good as is. Luca put a fine crumb dusting of hazelnuts all over the poor tiramisu. It was suffocating in fine dust. It was distracting. I had a pile full of crumbs in my mouth instead of creamy mascarpone filling. It also took away from presentation. Looked like a sloppy mess. The thing I loved was the espresso martini. I spotted an espresso machine, and I appreciate a true shot of espresso in my martini. I enjoyed the lovely decor & kind people. How ever, spending $80 on food that I barely remember, nope. I cant.
