We decided to get two Small shaved snow ($8.50 each), one with guava flavored snow and the other with Thai tea. Each order also comes with two toppings of your choice so we opted for the almond jelly and mango to top our guava snow, and egg pudding and mochi to top our Thai tea. The snow had a creamy texture and I enjoyed the flavor of the Thai tea snow. The guava snow was pretty disappointing as I didn't get the guava flavor. Additionally, I wish they were more generous with the toppings as it was only enough to last through our first few bites so we had to eat the remaining snow on its own sans toppings. The shop appears small from the exterior, but there is a decent amount of seating indoors, about 4-5 small tables. They called our number as each item was ready for pick up at the counter. We chose various sixes between small, medium, large. We ordered the durian (highly recommend), taro, matcha, and strawberry. It's been a while since my last visit to Salju due to my busy schedule, but after my most recent experience, I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. I've always loved Salju. The shaved ice has the perfect soft texture, and the toppings really complete it, you truly can't find anything quite like it in the area. That's what makes this experience so disappointing. The customer service was terrible. There was no acknowledgment when we walked in, and the staff seemed more focused on personal conversations than on customers. I guess it's true what they say about these Gen Z's. They don't give a f*. At one point, they were openly talking about personal life, and it was hard not to hear. Yes, girl. I heard you met your guy 3 weeks ago from a friend. When our order came out wrong and my friend tried to ask a question, she stood there waiting to be acknowledged while the conversation continued. On top of that, the mango topping was rotten. I'm assuming it went unnoticed because the staff was too busy chatting instead of paying attention. We ordered a pandan shaved ice w/ rice balls, taro pudding, and lychee jelly, topped with condensed milk. (2/5) The first bite tasted yummy and sweet. Toppings were great as well. But as we ate more, the sweetness from the condensed milk disappeared & the pandan flavor also wasn't prominent. It started to taste like bitter frozen milk, which wasn't pleasant & left us feeling very confused & disappointed with our dessert :(( We asked for more condensed milk which helped but that essentially masked the taste of the bitter milk shaved ice which shouldn't be there in the first place.. and no pandan flavor in sight. I am not sure if this is a ingredient issue but if I were the business, I would consider the recipe again & make sure the ingredients/machine/process is doing alright. When it comes to snow ice, no San Gabriel Valley dessert bar does it better than Salju Dessert. This popular shop shares a Valley strip mall with a tea house and a Cajun seafood joint. The atmosphere is very 90s, from the pastel walls and upholstery to the outdated wavy ceiling decorations. To the left, a line queues up at the ordering counter, and staff members sculpt snow bowls in cardboard cups. On the right and straight back, mismatched tables and chairs are scattered around the walls. Chinese pop music blends with the echo of chatter, and the air conditioner is no match for the SoCal summer heat. Across multiple visits, I have been most impressed by the dynamic Taro ice and the rich Black Sesame ice. The true-to-flavor Thai Tea is also worth trying. Less exciting are the muted Guava and the Vietnamese Coffee flavors. For toppings, I'd highly recommend the fresh mochi Rice Balls (as opposed to the "Mochi" topping, which is the sugary, shelf-stable variety). Other solid toppings are the jellies and condensed milk. My largest criticism is that the toppings are sprinkled along the outside, leaving an inconsistent snow-to-topping ratio. On the weekends, expect every table to be taken and a line trail out the door. Service is friendly but inefficient, as the staff can only create one shaved ice bowl at a time -- as such, simple orders should be placed at the kiosk in the middle of the space. A two-flavored Medium Snow will run you $12 and will reasonably satisfy 2-3 appetites. It took about 10-15 minutes for my order to be ready. There's limited seating so I typically stand and wait for my order and eat outside or in my car. Don't expect to be able to easily find seating, it's usually crowded! I've tried so many flavors and they're all great! My favorite flavors would have to be Black Sesame, Pandan, and Coconut. The snow is so light and fluffy, it's a texture different from your the typical ice cream. The flavors don't exactly pack a punch so don't expect it coming from snow. I mean, it is snow so it'd have a light icy flavor anyways. For $8.50 you'd think it's pricey, but for the amount you get, a small was filling for me and my boyfriend. I'm glad we shared because a small was enough to fill up the both of us! You're able to get 2 toppings included and 1 choice of drizzle.
