    failed attempt at cooking rice

Unfortunate miss. First time trying this place, went for lunch, grabbed about 5 dishes off their lunch menu. Price was ok, maybe a little high in general for what you get. Also their dine in sit down menu looks extra pricey. Anyways parts of the food tasted weird. Particularly the rice. How does a Japanese restaurant get rice wrong? It tasted almst like they used soapy water to cook it. It was inedible. Something was also off with the tomato and beef in other dishes. The green beans were the mostly normal tasting part of the meal.

Small restaurant, staff very friendly and attentive, stopped in for lunch, had the Katsu Curry, price with tax and tip was $25.00, portion size was good. Food came quickly, curry had good flavor, not very spicy. Cutlet was cook well and had a nice light breading. Parking may be a bit tight but there is usually some on the street if the lot is full. Will go back for something else from the menu.

Nice little Japanese restaurant that is tucked in between a few businesses. You definitely wouldn't think a restaurant as nice as this one would be located where its at. PARKING can be a little tricky, but you can find some additional parking along the street side. SERVICE was great. They were friendly and attentive. They provided great recommendations. FOOD was on point. Everything tasted great! We ordered quite a few tasty items on the menu. Pictures for reference. Drinks were great. I had the Lucky Dog Ale and ordered a bottle of sake. Looking forward to another trip here.

We'd heard good buzz about this place, hidden in a small strip mall, and had to try it. We opted for a reservation at 5:30 and glad we did, as the place got packed after we arrived. The inviting funky atmosphere, quality menu, and seating in plush, red cushioned chairs made for a nice experience. I loved the asparagus appetizer, crunchy and drenched in yakitori sauce. The bento box we split was great-- savory crab sushi, spicy salad, tuna/salmon/yellowtail nigiri, and tempura. They have a nice variety of sakis, too. I'm no expert on sushi, but it was evident the chef knows his stuff. We'll be back.

Love this place! We've been here a few times and the food has been consistently fresh and well prepared. It's an easy spot for a casual meal, and the service has always been friendly. Definitely one of those places we keep coming back to. #taxcap98

    SEARED BLACK PEPPER TUNA

Overall, I would recommend giving this place to try. The ambience is nice, the staff is friendly, and the food was good. I will say some items are pricier than other places, but still enjoyable. Decided to give this place a try and stumbled upon it right as it opened! The ambience was really nice and the waiter told us the menu was brand new, (less than a week old). Everything looked so good, so we didn't hesitate on tasting a variety of items. Appetizer: GARLIC SPICY EDAMAMME $8 This was my least favorite item. The edamame was steamed way too long. As a result it was super soft, stringy, and mushy. The spicy garlic sauce was just coated on the top, but not really cooked into the appetizer. Specialty Cut Roll: EL SEGUNDO $23 (ingredients are... SPICY TUNA - AVOCADO - CUCUMBER - TOPPED WITH TUNA - SASHIMI - JALAPENO DRESSING CILANTRO) This was soooo tasty and flavorful. It had a surprisingly zesty taste to it. I don't know if I'm doing justice to this roll, but it was good! Hand Rolls (choose 3 for $35) - BLUE CRAB (with CUCUMBER - AVOCADO) This was OK. It tasted like crabcake mix (pre patty fried) in a hand roll. A bit dry, but real crab was a plus. - YELLOWTAIL (with AVOCADO - IKURA) This was a little dry as well. Paired well with the soy sauce, but otherwise it was just OK. - TORO (with GREEN ONION) My least favorite of the three. It looked like a very rich and flavorful cut of fish. However, in my opinion, it was quite bland and tasteless. Sashimi Carpaccio Style: SEARED BLACK PEPPER TUNA $25 (served with SPRING MIX - CRISPY ONION - GREEN ONION - YUZU) YES, YES, AND MORE YES! This was so tasty! The tuna was seared perfectly with a nice delicious coating of black pepper. The onion was less crispy and more on the soft side. But if you ignored that, the remainder of the dish was excellent. This I ordered two of. Drink: Green Tea I love me some tea from a sushi house. In this case, my hot green tea arrived in a mason jar with a teabag?!. Not what I expected when I ordered hot green tea. They did offer to refill my glass (using the same teabag), but the leaves were all used up. A little disappointed on this aspect. Condiments: - Wasabi : they use wasabi paste, but provide the option of real wasabi. If you ask for the paste, be advised it is very light in spice and flavor. The actual wasabi is better, but comes with a five or eight-dollar upcharge. - Ginger : nice and fresh

    Beef Udon
    Ivan Lawrence A.

Food I initially ordered the beef curry rice and was excited for my order, but I was informed only after about 10 minutes that they did not have it in stock, which was a shame and I felt it was bad service to inform me only after having waited so long. I ordered the beef udon instead. The beef udon was actually pretty good. Nice and savory broth with good umami that warms you up. Tender beef and some good udon noodles. Service/Ambiance We came in as a pretty large party of 6, so they told us that they could seat us in one table but we'd have to move tables in about 30 minutes since there was a reservation for that table which was fine I guess. We get to ordering and the server was nice but seemed to be a bit lost in knowledge of the menu when we were putting in our orders and had questions on the menu items. The food took a while to arrive.

I came back under the new ownership and the food is still quite good and appears to have improved since last time. I ordered the 2 yellowtail + blue crab bento combo. The tempura was light crispy and satisfying if very very slightly oily. The salad had an appropriate amount of bright zesty yuzu dressing, which complimented the crisp greens well. The blue crab had a nice unami, creamy avocado, and crackles of flavor from the sesame seeds. The yellowtail was less than really fresh but still had excellent flavor and a thick cut. The soy sauce does overwhelm the sushi since its full sodium so be careful with that. All in all a pretty good meal. Minimal complaints.

sweet and spicy shrimp lunch bowl

I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp lunch bowl to go. The amount of shrimp and the size of shrimp used was really disappointing. They were smaller than the cherry tomatoes, which were another thing I found strange about this dish. The flavor wasn't bad but I think it tasted more like a ceviche for some reason. I may still come back as this isn't what I'd normally order from a place like this. But definitely would not order this again.

My girlfriend and I celebrated her birthday at Saloon Osaka off Imperial Ave and had a good experience. Before dinner, we enjoyed some plane watching at Clutter's Park, which set a relaxed tone for the evening. The food was delicious-- we ordered the gyu-don, unagi avocado bowl, four handrolls (two toro and two salmon), and two pieces of aji nigiri. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. However, when it got busy, service lagged a bit. One server seemed unfamiliar with the menu, and with only one sushi chef handling all tables, our waits stretched longer than expected. In fact, I waited an extra 10-15 minutes for my aji nigiri, though I ordered it in the middle of the meal.

This place is the trifecta of good food, service, and atmosphere! It has a small parking lot in a plaza but we were lucky to park in the lot. The salmon carpaccio was amazing! I also enjoyed the shrimp tempura roll. Everything was delicious and I would absolutely eat here again!

Cute little spot felt very cozy. Food and service were amazing. It"s a little pricey.

Great find and even better experience. I picked up some of my favorite people from LAX and they were craving sushi. Thank you Yelp for this hidden find! Beautiful ambiance that sure hits the feeling of being in Japan. Cute menu with great amount of choice at a reasonable price. Keep in mind, you're in El Segundo. Food was delicious and abundant. Well displayed. We probably got the largest cut of teriyaki salmon they had and stayed hot as we finished it slowly. Sushi was fresh. But what really made this a special night was the service. Service will always determine how many stars I give. Roberto was our waiter and he was awesome. Full of class, polite, attentive, and accommodating especially with all the questions a newbie would have. I would highly recommend this fine establishment and would return myself.

This is what $14.00 adagashi appetizer looks like. Going straight to the trash.

We walked in right on time for our reservation (because we're adults who respect the space-time continuum) and were ushered into a booth with "privatey" curtains. I'm not saying they'd hide you from the FBI, but they certainly provided enough cover for us to giggle and navigate stupidly through the menu. You can also order directly to a friendly human too. The atmosphere is colorful, lively, unstuffy, and private enough to enjoy good convo but not awko quiet. You order everything via an iPad, which is dangerous because when pictures of gyoza are staring you in the face, your impulse control vanishes. We ordered "a little bit of everything," which is code for "the table was structurally compromised by the weight of our dinner." * The Highlights: The pickled cucumbers (crisp enough to hear in the next county), the pork bowl, and sushi that actually tasted like it came from the ocean. The Fluids: Cold Asahi and Lemon Chu-His. Highly recommended if you enjoy being happy. Unfortunately, the food told a very different story. We ordered a wide variety of yakitori since the glowing reviews repeatedly highlighted it as the restaurant's specialty. Instead, what arrived was surprisingly inconsistent. Nearly every skewer had a heavily charred exterior that crossed the line from smoky to bitter. Good yakitori should showcase careful grilling that enhances the ingredients, not mask them with burnt flavors. The proteins themselves didn't taste particularly fresh, and the seasoning was all over the place. Some skewers were so lightly seasoned they tasted unfinished, while others were aggressively salty. Consistency is one of the fundamentals of good yakitori and it was noticeably lacking here. Having visited plenty of izakayas and eaten more than my fair share of yakitori, I'm not claiming Michelin-level expectations. I simply know the difference between properly grilled, well-balanced skewers and ones that miss the mark. Based on this visit, the food was below average and failed to live up to the hype. With the volume of positive reviews, I expected a memorable yakitori experience. Instead, I left wondering if I had visited the same restaurant everyone else was raving about.

With the USA getting a massive FIFA win, my New York Knicks finally taking home the NBA Finals Championship, and the Carolina Hurricanes defeating the Vegas Knights for the Stanley Cup, my friends and I needed a top-tier spot to celebrate. There was no question we were heading straight to Dash Dashi in Manhattan Beach. Located right near the pier on Manhattan Ave, Dash Dashi perfectly blends that laid-back South Bay coastal energy with incredibly refined sushi. We walked in buzzing from the games, and the staff matched our energy perfectly. The service here is always attentive and friendly. We kicked off the celebration with a round of their premium chilled sake and an order of their spicy garlic edamame. Do yourself a favor and do not skip the edamame--the hot spice blend is dangerously addictive and pairs perfectly with the sake. But let's talk about the main event. If you follow my channel, you already know I come here for one specific reason: the off-menu "KG Roll." The chefs know exactly how to make this custom signature roll for me, and it is a masterpiece every single time. The fish is insanely fresh and buttery, and it has the exact right balance of heat and crunch. Seriously, ask the chef if they can whip up the Kristina Farberman special (the KG Roll)--you will not regret it! Whether you're celebrating a historic weekend of sports sweeps or just looking for some of the best sushi in the South Bay, Dash Dashi never misses. Highly recommend! -- Kristina Farberman

Dash Dashi Creates Something Electrifying…read more There's a cold and impenetrable slab of marble that separates diners in an exhibition hub from the main action going on on the other side of the kitchen's pass through; it is where a host of chefs and demis are executing--in concert-- this incredible idea. Something quite spectacular is in the making. Hands are cleverly disguising, working under the hatch, employing various tasks in preparation of some personified version of "man?" I heard someone utter. You instinctively know it because there is an exceptional amount of care being devoted to this project--likely, a science project. No bubbling glass tubes, nor spiraling Tesla coils off-shooting from an enormous power grid--not even a reanimation table is present (not in the normal sense). There is a work surface and hands. As the chefs dash about, heating metal inserts of sushi rice blocks, and soy/mirin freshwater eel, hands to the left are pulverizing soy beans in a processor for cream cheese paste. The head chef winds a pile of kataifi and plops it into the fryer, creating a blonde nest--or, could it be a blond crown? Will it be woman or man? The senses are building--aromas clashing with tempura veggies and seafood flaring up into little savory puffs in a back fryer. And in blazing speed--a Yakimono-zara tray topped with (what looks like) a Nice to Meet Ya or Hedgehog Rolling cut roll whizzes by to it's awaiting guest. The chefs are still working, and eyes still gaping from the other side--waiting patiently for the REVEAL, when the cloak comes off and the mighty specimen is revealed... whatever it is that these artists have conjured up in those brilliantly encumbered brains of there's, is no one's guess. Their names are Chef Bank, and his ever so servile and highly gifted hands--Willie and Corn, on either side. Corn is building something with the glazed eel; Willie and the Chef Bank are working on the final topping. Their eyes seem pleased. And the plate is lifted over the hatch and presented... in all it's glory (and it is truly glorious), an indescribable feeling similar to shock... or perhaps, joy! overcomes the takers. They gasp, their eyes reel--they taste immediately, and they began to savor the flavors, cutting into the center--layer-by-layer, piece-by-piece through that magnificent halo of kataifi. The centrifugal forces of eel, spicy mayo, and edamame sauce collide as if caught in a wind storm, or better--by the force of the electrifying intensity those hands had the courage and audacity to create. And it is an audacious composition. I shall call it FRANKENSTEIN STANDING! It looks and feels, for a mere second, like all eight feet are there, maintaining as the ultimate spectacle--Dash Dashi's incarnation of the mega roll. Flavors, textures, aesthetic appeal, and palatability aside, the dish is an audacious and brave first attempt: the crispy caramelized kataifi contrasts with the creamy pearls of edamame, and it works in unison with the buttery essence of the vivid green cream cheese; the earth and body of the composition--the freshwater eel--balances the textures. The soy and mirin flavors shine through perfectly. I imagine my own experience. A resounding pair of grunts are heard--don't bother asking the opinions of the two lucky diners until they have finished every bite--and they have. Gut gemacht! That's, "Well done!" (in German), chefs!

Visited for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Quite busy. We ordered the pre fixed $32.00 lunch…read more Each item is served one at a time. The fish is expertly sliced thin and very fresh tasting. The hand rolls smallish but also very tasty . Service was speedy and friendly . Ambiance is that of a typical sushi restaurant . The chefs are center stage to watch. Tables are very close together. Overall a cozy atmosphere.

Wasn't going to leave a review but the excuse they gave just rubbed me absolutely the wrong way…read more Crab hand roll had a sharp piece of shell in it. Unpleasant, but I told my husband to pay the bill, then let them know and show them the shell on our plate after so as not to make a big deal. I've just healed from a tonsillectomy and that could have wrecked me had I swallowed before catching it. I just didn't want it to happen to anyone else. The staff member we told was very kind and said he would take the plate back to show the chefs. Honestly, almost all staff were kind. We shrugged off that one woman kept misidentifying the fish and not a single person could pronounce ponzu. A different staff member came by to apologize, but his "apology" was such a load of bull I couldn't look past it: "Apologies BUT our kitchen picks through the crab for shells at the beginning of the day but it has pieces of shell because it is real crab." It's Southern California. You know how many places serve real crab? And I get to enjoy it without sharp pieces of shell. I can buy premade Dungeness crab cakes at a grocery store with REAL crab and not get stabbed with a shell. Evidently this happens pretty often, because a sweet woman at the table over overheard and told us she gets shell shards literally every time with the crab hand roll, so now she switches it preemptively to a different hand roll. Definitely a smart move on her part. I used to love Sugarfish, but lately they've just been disappointing. The rice in the nigiri is always poorly shaped, if at all. We came to the Manhattan Beach location because the last time we had take out from Marina Del Rey, there was a large bone in the salmon nigiri. Unfortunately, the downturn in quality seems to be across locations.
