The main reason I am giving this restaurant a five star rating is Susie, the amazing, friendly, outgoing customer service she gives her customers is always above and beyond, sadly not everyone that works at this restaurant follows her exceptional example. I truly hope the management appreciates this employee and puts her in charge of making sure everyone there follows her exceptional leadership qualities. What she does is very hard work and the fact that she does it with such friendliness is priceless. Please everyone ask for Susie and be sure you show her she is appreciated. We decided to stop here for dinner as we passed through on the 99 Freeway. It is located a few blocks from the freeway in a strip mall. The restaurant is clean and the service is friendly. My husband had the barbacoa with rice, beans and a salad. It was very good and seasoned well. I had the caldo de rez. Unfortunately, I was not too pleased with the caldo. It had two little pieces of beef and mostly all cabbage. The cabbage pieces were also cut so large and undercooked that I had to literally pick it up with my hands to bite a piece off. It's in a strip mall but don't let that deceive you. Great place. We were seated quickly and the food was terrific. It was busy when we were there and they had a sign, that might be a little slow, because of Covid staffing but they were very quick and friendly. The chips are homemade and salsa was spot on. Sal's serves the best Mexican food in the central valley, and has for years. I have been to the Madera location twice, and I am impressed. Even in this little town, where service basics are sometimes hard to find, the staff here is friendly, attentive, and responsive. I have yet to see the bottom of my glass, and the conversational nature that the staff takes when addressing their clientele is truly welcoming. I have often ordered the camarones con mojo de ajo, because shrimp in garlic sauce is arguably the most delicious food ever created on this planet. Last visit I changed it up to Karl's Burrito and it delivered all the stomachful of satisfying, meaty dinner I could have asked for and more (because no way could I finish this thing). The food is fresh, flavorful, and authentic with every visit. This place is like a small step above Taco Bell. I've only ordered here three times, and all three times they messed up the order badly and overcharged me, but they will deliver to you if they mess up, but you have to slowly walk them through the whole process. Mediocre food, pricey for a 3-ingredient burrito w/no free salsa! 2 burritos not worth my $25! With $25 dollars, you're better off going to a taco truck, you'll have enough for 2 burritos + drinks + free salas! I placed an order over the phone, ordered 2 custom burritos; on the menue it says you get 1 meat choice and 2 fillings... I requested guacamole, sour cream, and cheese which I knew would be extra.... but apparently they also charged me for the meat... Ended up paying $25 for two burritos! When I arrived to pick up the food not only did they ignore me for almost 10 minutes but when I asked for "salsa" I was told that whatever I ordered was in the bag! I think what they were trying to say is that I had to pay for the salsa if I wanted any! Lame!!! read more

Thank you Yelpers, your reviews helped me find a good Mexican restaurant while vacationing in the Central Valley. We went to Sal's after a long drive in from Utah based on Yelper reviews and we are glad we did, the food was very good. I got a combo plate with two burritos, one Chili Verde the other Chili Con Carne, both were very tasty. The verde had plenty of meat, flavorful sauce and a great texture, the Chili con Carne (which I would probably call Chili Colorado) included big chunks of beef in a flavorful red sauce. The tortillas were fresh and the combo came with beans and rice, the beans had great flavor and the rice was good. The wife got a shrimp and prawn combo and she said it was very good as well. The chips and salsa were tasty, the salsa had just enough heat to satisfy me without being so spicy that the wife could not eat it. In summary, the food was very good, service was prompt after the initial lag, the menu has a good variety of options and prices are reasonable. The only negative was the fact that they were blasting a Mexican radio station throughout the restaurant, I could understand some controlled (non radio station, reasonable volume) Mexican music playing in the background but the radio station with screaming commercials was just too much read more
