Definitely fairly standard nyc pizza. However, given the fact that it's nearly impossible to find anything close to nyc pizza up here, this easily gets 4 stars. Good slice, nice dense crust that holds toppings well, fresh ingredients. I would prefer a little more sweetness in the sauce but don't let that hold you back from trying this. Definitely worth it. I grew up on Sal's. In the late 70s and early 80s, when i was at MHS, we often went there for lunch. I've lived out west for most of my adult life (San Francisco Bay Area and now Albuquerque) and have never found anything comparable anywhere. You people back there don't know how good you have it. Most of the pizza west of New Jersey and south of Philly comes on a crust best described as glorified Wonder Bread and is topped with subpar moz that would make an Italian weep. And nowhere but Sal's can you find that amazing Sicilian style pizza. The Sicilian pizza here is the best tasting pizza. Toppings are good in terms of quantity and quality, and the food is fairly priced, even with the recent increases. The regular pie here is also good, but it's not quite on the same level. If you are looking for a non-dairy option, the salad pizza is great. When you walk out with your order, you feel like you are holding a lot of good food for your money. Cheese is the right color, without being excessively greasy. I'm no expert, but it seems to at least be of good quality. It comes out perfectly molten and reheats well for days. The sauce is the perfect bit of slightly sweet, salty and tangy that will have you licking your fingers. The crust is firm and stands up, with the right amount of crunchiness and a great crumb. The rest of the menu that I've tried is good. The meatballs are as tasty on a sub as they are on a pizza, and the chicken and pasta dishes have always come out well cooked. However, this is a pizzeria, so your best bet is the pizza. The service is efficient, though you'll get in and out of here much quicker if you order ahead. At times the line can be comical, but it never approaches the types of lines you see at trendy places in NYC. Seating is limited and can be tough to find some nights, but I don't eat in often enough to encounter this problem anymore. This is the best pizza! No matter what you order you are going to get a wonderful slice. The last time we were here we way over ordered, because we wanted the leftovers for breakfast the next morning. We had: A regular pie half pepperoni, a Sicilian pie half pepperoni, and an order of garlic knots with a side of sauce. While this place is mainly built on hype, I must admit that their pizza is quite good! Best in Westchester, no, but best in the area (Harrison/Mamaroneck/Larchmont/Rye/Portchester)? Most certainly They only offer several different types of pizza. Of what I remember they only have Plain, Sicilian, and salad ready to eat; the rest must be ordered seperately from what I recall. I've been going to sals for 30 years and today I had a first. Ordered a pie at 6:40 pm, arrived at 7 pm and got a pie that was not only not hot but stiff as cardboard. Almost inedible. Took 10 minutes to chew the crust. A real bullshit way to treat a customer. I'll write it off this one time but next time I'll throw the pie at the guy who gave it to me. I really wanted a fresh Sal's pie but got treated like garbage. I'm seriously pissed off. I paid $16 to get screwed and on top of that I had to order another pie from another pizzeria so me and my family could have a decent dinner. Like I said, this is a first but I'm still steamed. Had the Sicilian obviously. Theres a lot going on with that slice. The bottom of the crust is crispy, but the middle and top are soft and fully cooked. Super good. Cool. locally owned joint with no frills service and pretty decent pizza but if you are craving something more they also offer full dinners. Walk next door and they have awesome gelato. Love! I personally prefer a super dry/light crispy melt in your mouth thin crust-their crust is heavier and not really crisp. However it is consistent and I enjoy everything I've ever ordered from there! The pasta entrees are the best on the strip- they cook the noodles al dente and their marinara is extra garlicky. Yes they are not overly friendly over the phone and in person but who cares. One time I had to keep calling back because when he didnt understand my order he would just hang up.... The sicillian slice is no joke - one of the best i've ever had and I definitely crave it from time to time. Tons of cheese over a great sauce and tasty crust = Sal's sicillian. The regular slices are good too but doesn't stand out as much when compared to their sicillian. Sal's is must-stop when coming through Mamaroneck. I ended up getting two completely different slices (ham, broccoli, and chicken; ham, pineapple, spinach, and chicken), plus two generic slices (pepperoni) and a grilled chicken salad for 20$. Are you kidding me?!? Left full, satisfied, and very happy. Also, the grilled chicken salad was surprisingly great. LOVE Sal's! The pizza here is so good! We actually first heard about Sal's on the local news... They had landed on a list of the top 50 pizza places in the country. Since it was nearby, we decided to check it out, and we're so glad we did! When you get to Sal's you wait on a line that is sometimes out the door, but it moves quickly, so don't be discouraged. You order your pizza - my husband and I always get one salad slice, one regular, and one Sicilian, and have them cut all three in half so we can share. Then you pay - cash only. The pizza is ready and you carry it back to the tables. Even though it's always busy, we've never had an issue getting a table. After dinner, you walk next door to the connected gelateria and get yourself some tasty gelato. Then you go home satisfied, because you are stuffed with delicious pizza and gelato! read more
