My wife and I recently celebrated a special occasion here, and overall, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. The food was outstanding. The Tomahawk steak was cooked perfectly, the atmosphere was elegant without feeling stuffy, and the service was attentive throughout the evening. It was the kind of dinner that creates lasting memories, and for that, we are grateful. That said, I continue to struggle with the restaurant's à la carte pricing model. I fully understand that many high-end steakhouses operate this way, but I have never quite embraced the concept. Our Tomahawk steak cost $175 and arrived without a single side dish. The fries and broccolini sides you see here were both extra charges. To be clear, this is not a complaint about the quality of the food or the overall cost of the evening. We knew we were choosing a fine dining experience and were happy to pay for it. My concern is more philosophical. When a guest orders a premium steak, I believe a complete meal should accompany it, with opportunities to upgrade or substitute sides if desired. That approach would feel more hospitable and customer-friendly while still allowing the restaurant to offer customization and premium add-ons. None of this diminished what was otherwise a terrific evening, and I would gladly return. I simply think the dining experience would feel even more complete if the restaurant reconsidered the increasingly common practice of charging separately for every component of the meal. In short: excellent food, excellent service, wonderful atmosphere, memorable evening--just a pricing philosophy that I personally find difficult to embrace. read more

Our server was excellent. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain the menu and food options, which made our dining experience better. Unfortunately, my steak was overly salted and inedible. We were with a group of 13 with the bill totaling $3800. I learned at the end of our meal that 4 of us thought the same of our steak. However, the outstanding service made a positive impression. I hope the kitchen is alot lighter on the seasoning next time. The menu offers several appetizers, salads, caviar, steaks and entrees. I opted for the shrimp linguini dish which comes with a pesto sauce. I really liked it. My husband had the New York strip steak and said it was one of the best he has had. We also got the peach Melba for dessert. It was a work of art and very tasty. The Service was Fantastic. Especially calling out Evan and Michael. Supreme Professionals at what they do. The cocktails and food were Excellent. We dined there for hours. Salt and Char could be perfect except their Fine Dining Area is less to be desired. They need to hire an Acoustic Engineer because the Dining Room is so loud my ears are still ringing the next day. In addition, there were no Linens on the tables (might help). There's a Big wide Entrance with no Door that takes away from the atmosphere. It adds to the Chaos of noise. Salt & Char delivers a five-star experience from beginning to end. It's a standard high-class steakhouse and aligns with a Ruths Chris or a Mortons. You should kind of expect a high price, each soft drink refill is charged individually, the food items are à la carte, and side dishes come with an extra cost. Once you get past those idiosyncrasies, they do deliver quite a good steak! I had the 12 oz New York strip which was one of the tastiest I've had in a long time. At $75, it's pricey, and an affordable luxury. The service is wonderful - Lisa made a solid recommendation for dinner, and each piece of silverware was switched out within minutes of using it. The meals overall averaged about $100 per person, we did not have any appetizer or alcohol, so those can push the prices even higher. In season, the streets do seem to fill up quickly, so if you're driving a car in the area plan early to find parking, which can be challenging especially on weekends. Overall, I do recommend this restaurant, noting the high end experience you should expect. read more

Special splurge meal with a couple buddies Started with the Broadway tower for 2 -- all the seafood was excellent. Shrimp were huge, salmon crab and Tuna were all delicious Lobster dumplings - probably the most delicious bite of the meal. It's pricy tho I got the delmonico - 16oz boneless ribeye. Perfectly cooked med rare, no complaints at all. Au poivre sauce was ok but probably could leave out Unpictured - Other friend ordered the 7oz wagyu top cap, which was described as meat butter. Can't go wrong with any of these Sides: Mac n cheese with lobster was wonderfully creamy and succulent, with good pieces of lobster. Brussel sprouts w/bacon was great and the only green thing in our meal. Potato dauphinoise - probably could've done without - not special Wild mushrooms was good We all also ordered a lobster tail add on to our steak -- we definitely won't do this again. Not worth the $35 for a small tail that was swimming in butter and overcooked My old fashioned was perfectly made. A friend loved his martini. Another got a Johnnie walker blue on a rock - this was a splurge that is not worth it but that was known going in The dining room consists of several smaller rooms. Our r9om had 3 or 4 tables, and a couple times was loud. But nothing too crazy. Our waitress Danielle was wonderful. Very personable and super knowledgeable of the whole menu. She offered her suggestions when asked, and checked in on us. Her helper (forgot his name) was also great and refilled water quickly. Salt and Char has a wonderful ambiance. We celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. It's located inside the Adelphi Hotel. The table setting are pretty, the placemats are stamped leather and matches the menu. They served warm delicious bread, which I could probably eat for my whole meal. My husband and I both had cocktails which were delicious, but I forgot to take a picture of them. He had a mezcal based cocktail and I had a tequila based one. For dinner I had the filet mignon and it was cooked wonderfully. However my husband's dry aged steak was next level. The lobster macaroni and cheese was pretty good as well. The restaurant Salt & Char was highly recommended to us, and we were celebrating our anniversary while staying at the Adelphi Hotel. We had reservations and noted that our occasion was our 26th anniversary. It's possible the note wasn't read, but it was included in the reservation. When we were seated, there was no acknowledgment of our anniversary, and the waiter did not provide a special dinner menu. By contrast, the couple at the next table received champagne upon arrival, a warm welcome, and suggested a special dinner menu. Our dinner was served with an incorrect order. My wife asked for her steak to be medium-well, but it arrived medium. The risotto had an overwhelming taste of parsley. When we asked for a suggestion for steak sauce, the busboy did not provide a good recommendation, possibly due to unfamiliarity with the different flavor profiles. Additionally, despite the note requesting intimate, quiet seating for our anniversary, this was not accommodated. We were seated very close to the next table, which made it awkward to speak because conversations could be heard by others. My wife and I ended up here for my birthday dinner because there was a power outage at the Casino Hotel where we were staying and our 6pm reservation for Morton's (located in the hotel) had to be canceled. The manager suggested Salt & Char. The earliest time they could give us was 7:45 so we reluctantly took it, as it was a Saturday night and reservations were tough to get anywhere in town, and despite the fact that we were starving after a long drive up from central NJ and now we are bumped almost 2 hours. In the meantime, we found another restaurant and made a reservation for 7pm. As we were en route, we received a call from Salt & Char saying they could take us at 7, so we decided to give it a shot and cancel the other restaurant. It was nice that they called, but I wish they didn't. We arrive and they seat us at a very small 2-top right as you enter the dining room, an odd place for a table. It seemed like a table they add to the room on busy nights. There was a much better 2-top over by the window. We asked the hostess if we could sit there and she said it was reserved for someone who was currently at the bar. Our server even tried to move us there a while later, as it still looked vacant, but she was told no by the hostess. The lighting was very bright. We were told they got a new lighting system and whoever installed it forgot to install a dimmer. Between the brightness and the loud volume of everyone's conversations, the ambiance was terrible. But ok, we tried to make the best of it. We put in our orders. Server was friendly, drinks were good, bread & butter delicious. Aside from the awkwardly located table and annoying ambiance, we were off to a decent start, but quickly went downhill from there. My wife's salad not only didn't look appetizing, it was bland and unpleasant to eat. I ordered a filet mignon cooked medium and it was fine, but not worth $70, a la carte no less. The seasoning was barely adequate and I probably should have ordered an optional butter or sauce but I didn't. The mashed potatoes were very good. My wife's swordfish dinner was not very good and didn't even really look like swordfish. The portions were very small. In fact, we were hungry again a few hours later and ended up ordering Dominos. The only real bright spots here were the friendly server, delicious bread, and the mashed potatoes, and the filet was decent, and for that I think 2 stars is generous. Not sure when we'll be in this area again, but we certainly won't be eating at Salt & Char. We definitely weren't very impressed. And the entire time we were there, nobody ever sat at the table we wanted. read more

We stopped in for a pre-dinner drink. My daughter ordered a dirty martini and I ordered a Strawberry Field. Neither of our drinks were good. I could not taste any strawberry in my drink and it was very strong so I asked her to add some strawberry purée, which is how it was advertised on the menu. She said she didn't have any, but could add strawberry liquor. So I wasn't really sure what she actually put in my drink. That's probably why it didn't taste very good! After an evening walk exploring downtown Saratoga. We decided to finish off our food experience eating dessert at Salt and Char. We had a tough time picking the dessert and we finally narrowed it down to Samoa cheesecake or chocolate crème Brulee. We ended up going with the latter and we weren't disappointed. After a few days in Saratoga Springs, I'm comfortable with the surroundings and came across Salt & Char. I walked in and asked to dine at the bar. It's also happy hour and my go to Cocktail is offered, talk about happiness! While my Old Fashioned is being prepped, I order a steak and something called an "Angry Potato". Now I know potatoes are very versatile, they can power clocks, be used as tactile weapons and can also be made into Vodka! This potato was topped with succulent warm butter and poached lobster. Why get mad over that?? Cocktail comes to me and it's bangin'. Nice notes and I made sure there's a Bourbon Cherry as per Yelper Gail. My steak is cooked to perfection and I loved the side potato with lobster. (Is the lobster angry? Celebration dinner- restaurant of the birthday girl's choosing. She had been wanting to try Salt & Char since it was featured on Best Thing I Ever Ate ala Bobby Flay. Made reservations well over a month ago for a weekend evening which I believe is probably a must do if you want to dine here during prime dinner time and not wait for a table. They seem to have a large following and get quite busy. Service was top notch from our waiter to the hostess and everyone else. You can tell they take customer service seriously and want patrons to enjoy themselves. The restaurant is very well run, professional, and a higher end experience for sure. We started with specialty cocktails- mine a tequila strawberry based one on their menu. Sweet, strong and fresh- three things I love in a drink (personally). Sazarec for the birthday girl which is for the strong at heart as it is just that STRONG but honestly quite smooth which can only happen with higher end alcohol and an experienced bartender. We had oysters from MA to start which were presented on this beautiful silver plate (see photo), served cold and a perfect start. Being fans of all kinds of carpaccio we also had to try their dry aged beef one. Beautifully presented, extremely well seasoned and delicious. Could I tell it was dry aged? Probably not but it was good for carpaccio. We came for the wagyu steak cap and we secured it, phew.... Birthday mission complete! It was delicious, melt in your mouth good. I have to equally say that their mashed potatoes with onion soup- also so divine and a must get as well. They don't seem to have many vegetable options as sides so we opted for a salad as well- the wedge. While good, probably the only miss of the night- bacon was dry and dressing was just okay. Dessert of course followed- huckleberry Creme brûlée with espresso ala side of Baileys. They nicely had put a candle on our dessert as a nod to the celebration with a birthday wish from our waiter. Classy job! The dessert was a perfect end to the night and let me tell you- the espresso was amazing!!! We had a most lovely evening and the birthday lady loved it! Highly recommend Salt & Char for a special night. This past weekend, I went to this restaurant for the first time after the races. My expectations were somewhere in the middle because I had not researched the restaurant before going. Beautiful ambiance and decor. This restaurant is located in the foyer of the Adelphi Hotel. There are two restaurants, so make sure you get to this one before you get seated. Both restaurants were crowded when I visited. I came with my partner and a friend. We waited for a table at the bar. The wait was short, and I was able to have a margarita while waiting. I ordered the 8-ounce Filet Mignon. Their steaks do not come with sides; you must order them separately. I also ordered truffle fries. I ordered my steak medium, which I often regret because filet mignon may be easily overcooked, but to my amazement, the filet was cooked perfectly. The fries were crunchy and just perfect. Try the sauce; it adds more flavor. My partner's steak was also cooked nicely, and he appreciated it. We received bread after ordering, and it was good. Our server was incredibly attentive, ensuring that our water glasses were kept full and that we had enough drinks. Overall, I had a pleasant time and will return. I am giving 4 stars because the place was crowded and I could barely follow the conversation at the table. read more

Our service did not rush us , or pressure us at all. It was our first time here, so it took us some time to decide what we'd like. It could definitely satisfy 3, maybe not 4. But there was plenty for the two of us. Everything was fresh, full of flavor. I got the NY strip and my husband got the Kansas City steak medium rare. We shared the cauliflower mash and Mac and cheese. We could not finish the sides, and I hardly finished my steak (he helped!) it was cooked to perfection, and the char on the outside was amazing. We shared the baked Alaska desert, which was huge. It was also spectacular. It was not too heavy of a flavor, which was interesting because it was peanut butter chocolate, so I anticipated it being heavy. We really enjoyed it and would 100% order again! We had the Bee Sting cocktails and the Last Call cocktails. They were great, I really enjoyed the Last Call as it wasn't very sweet. It is a pricier restaurant but worth every penny. Grab a glass of wine or an espresso and sit awhile. This is a long and detailed read. I have avoided leaving this review for 3 weeks and have called Salt & Char 6 times leaving messages for the manager or GM to please call me back. No response. Completely GHOSTED. So... My husband has wanted to try this place for a few years. I had been here twice before but felt it was pricey and below average but it was our anniversary so I surprised him. Let me begin by saying their staff is WONDERFUL. Their hostess, wait staff, food runners, bussers...all attentive, helpful and friendly. We arrived ON TIME for our reservation outside and found that the manager/sommelier (Luïc) had given our table away. The hostess apologized several times as we were sent to the bar to wait for another table. Not her fault and she was incredibly sweet. After waiting 20 mins or so we were seated outside. We had ordered a bottle of wine while we were at the bar and they wouldn't serve it to us until we were seated??? We place our order: salad, a huge, dry aged steak meant for 2-3 people, potatoes and mushrooms. 15 minutes after we finish our salads the waitress tells us the chef doesn't like the way the meat looks and wants to change our order??? Okay. We change our order. (We are VERY hungry by now and thankfully, their bread is really good) No offer of an appetizer while we have been forced to wait. The steak comes out and is still mooing...and my husband is already disgusted with how the night is going. No worries, we will eat the outer pieces and take the rest home. EXCEPT!!! It is pure salt. Like hurt your throat, I need more water now, SALT. I've never had anything that salty in my life. We can't eat it, so we don't. The sides look incredible and we shrug and dig in...pure. salt. We can't eat it. The waitress asks how our food is and we tell her. Her response? "You're the 4th table tonight that said the food was so salty that they couldn't eat it." Ummm...good to know? But why didn't someone correct the problem? She offers us another steak and we decline. I ask her to give a message to the manager, Loïc. It's our anniversary and we don't want to deal with this right now, but we would like to talk to him (he's also the sommelier) please have him call us tomorrow and then we order dessert. The dessert were really good. They do not fuss over special occasions. No candles. No complimentary dessert to make our night a little better. The manager does not come over to apologize and tell me he will call me the next day. Nothing. We chat again with our waitress, she apologizes and we get up to leave. We didn't ask for anything. No comp meal. No gift certificate. Nothing and now I'm so annoyed... no, now I'm fuming with EVERYTHING that has happened. I ask to speak with the manager. Where is the manager on a Saturday night at 9:00 pm? No one can find him!! Really?? Anyone that has ever worked in a restaurant knows there is a manager there on a Saturday night. I bit my tongue and we left. We would leave zero stars but the staff really do their job well and it's not their fault that the chef and the manager could care less about this business or their customers. We tipped the busser $20 cash, the hostess $20 cash, and our waitress $100. The night was over $500 ++ for one of the most expensive, yet WORST meals of our lives. For 2 people. Salt and Char has a lot of theatrics for the traveling C-Suite crowd, but you can definitely find better quality meals for a fraction of the price in town. I will admit that their steaks are outstanding... you just have to be cool with a la carte menus and high prices. They were following Covid 19 protocols so that made me so much more comfortable to dine indoors. I started with the Baby Kale Salad which was a roasted acorn squash, dried cranberries, pepitas, goat cheese with pomegranate vinaigrette. It was delicious and full of flavor. It was just the right combination. The squash was cut into quarters and laid across the top of the salad. It was roasted just right not to hard. It was perfect to slice and include a slice with every bite of the salad. I then had the 7. Oz filet mignon with Bearnaise sauce. I ordered it medium. It was done okay but the meat didn't have a lot of flavor. It was good but done a bit more than medium. I also had the truffle fries which were good. My boyfriend had the Tomahawk steak and said his steak didn't have a lot of flavor either. He had the Chimichurri sauce which I tasted but didn't like the taste of it. It didn't have enough garlic or oregano in it. We also had the truffle fries which was good. I had the Mums the Word Cocktail which has gin, elderflower, grapefruit and Prosecco. Almost as good as any restaurant we frequent in nyc so this place has my stamp of approval! The staff was ok, could be a bit friendly. The steak was great quality, the oysters were amazing but the dish that stole the show was the Mac and cheese! Not sure what they put in this side dish but I was ready to order one to go so good!!! We were vacation and wanted to try this place. It was amazing. Very pricey but worth every penny. We split a 22 oz tomahawk steak which we got medium rare and was done to perfection! The brought it cut of you so choose to. We did. It was ridiculously good. We had the barmaids and the gorgonzola cream! Both were excellent. We also ordered the asparagus and potatoes dauphinoise for the sides. Asparagus was al dente, nice crunch great flavor. The potatoes we also added the lobster, it was absurd! So delicious, this is to be a dish that takes a day or two for prep. It was so good, if you go, try it, you'll understand! Ambiance was nice , a little noisy but not crazy, good lighting for dinner. The server was Danielle, she was very friendly, and very knowledgeable on the restaurants menu. She knew it up and down and was helpful on deciding what we were going to order. We arrived on time for our 8:30 reservation, and waited at the hostess area for a few of minutes before being seated at a table that they should eliminate from their floorplan: in the back room at a table directly in front of the fireplace, surrounded by diners on all sides, but also simultaneously out of the sight line of both doorways that lead you into the space. The acoustics of the backroom are such that when it is full, being seated at this table ensures all that every conversation surrounding you is amplified in such a way that is distracting and unpleasant. Once seated, eight minutes passed by before any server approached our table. Out of sight, out of mind is an accurate saying but it should never apply at a restaurant. We ordered the french onion soup, the romaine and kale Caesar salad, fried calamari with brussel sprouts, two filets (8 and 12 ounce) and a side of the fried rice. My girlfriend enjoyed her salad, the French onion soup was okay (the flavor of the soup is excellent, the unfortunate phyllo hat they cover the soup with diminishes any of the gruyere flavor but also makes for a clumsy eating experience. What am I supposed to do with it? Eat the pastry separately from the soup? Dip it in the soup? There truly is no good answer, and no matter what you do you'll end up with a mess on your placemat as the hat is flakier than even your least reliable friend. Don't get me wrong, in a different capacity the pastry would be fine, it's not bad - it just doesn't complement the soup in any way. I've thought this in the past when I ordered the soup, and for whatever reason I keep ordering it, lesson learned. The calamari had an excellent crunch to it (thank you tempura batter). It was a welcome experience after ordering calamari at another restaurant that was floppy and soggy: the first thing that stood out was the crunch. I am not sure if tempura batter gets harder the longer it is out of the fry oil, but that was my perception. The old bay mayo had a great flavor to it. I am not sure if it is possible to fit more disappointment into a 12 ounce serving of meat than what I experienced with my 12 ounce filet. I requested the my steak be cooked medium, and it came out medium rare at best. It also wasn't particularly flavorful (calm down steak connoisseurs - I understand that a filet is the least flavorful cut of meat - but still, it's all relative). I ate around the edges of the steak, but was quite disappointed that it wasn't cooked to the proper temperature. Without me saying anything our waitress, Liz, asked on two separate occasions if I wanted to have it thrown back on the grill and I declined. They could have cooked it to the perfect temperature but the disappointment would have remained regardless. My girlfriend's steak came out cooked to the proper temperature and she enjoyed it, particularly the chimichurri on top. I cannot help but wonder if the chef started cooking the 8 and 12 ounce steaks at the same time and took them off at the same time, we both requested medium, and they were cooked to dramatically different temperatures. The fried rice had a nice flavor to it, but my goodness the amount of oil that remained in the rice could single-handedly lower national gas prices back to a reasonable level. It made it a little bit unpleasant to eat. Salt and Char's bread and butter ... is probably their bread and butter. I have never enjoyed this simple staple more at any other restaurant. The bread is freshly baked, comes to the table piping hot and is so wonderfully complemented by their lightly salted butter. I could never be disappointed if I came here simply for that and possibly a cappuccino. The final thing that stood out to me is how new and untrained the food runners were. In the past there were European culinary students that came over to the States to gain experience working in a high end restaurant, and they were terrific. Not once during the meal did either food runner bringing food to our table know who ordered what. That might become complicated if you are serving a table of four to eight people, but serving a couple should not present this challenge. I understand that it is off-season, that the labor shortages presented by covid have had a dramatic impact on any business' ability to hire and retain talent, but the woeful inadequacy of the food runners who were probably not old enough to enjoy a glass of wine was a bit disappointing. I have had one phenomenal meal here in the past, a couple of average dining experiences and this was the first and only time that eating here was truly terrible. In no way am I implying that my experience is what you should expect when eating here. On any given night one patron must inevitably draw the short straw and have the worst experience of the night and last night it was my turn. The best Tito's and lemonade I've ever had. The bartender was incredible, he made lemonade from scratch, it tasted just like lemonade from the fair but not too sweet. The oysters were fresh, clean and cold but they were not shucked properly, the foot was still attached to the shell making it hard to eat. The French Onion soup was incredible!!!! The bronzino was delicious, I didn't love the parsnip purée and the broccoli rabe needed a few more minutes of cooking. The octopus and calamari with cauliflower was delicious, and the cauliflower was really my favorite part, it should a side of its own. read more

We decided to treat ourselves to a fancy date night and check out Salt & Char. I Thought this place was wonderful. Service was top notch. Rich got up and left his napkin messy on the table and a waiter came around and folded it up nice. Our waitress was attentive and apologized when our drinks took a little longer because the bar got hit with a bachelor party that ordered 16 espresso martinis haha. The food was cooked to perfection but I did think the portions could be slightly bigger but the quality was unmatched. The space is beautiful and attached to the historic Aldephi Hotel and has a beautiful patio area you can sit at that overlooks Broadway. The space itself inside is small and can get loud. We noticed it was especially loud when the table next to us was there because they were just loud people and when they were gone it got better. So the acoustics in the room aren't great so it was hard to have a conversation at times. That wouldn't keep me from coming back tho. This was overall a 10/10 dining experience. read more

the service and food are both excellent. the non alcoholic sparkling tea is worth every cent and the pistachio rhubarb creme brûlée is one of the best things i've ever eaten. a little pricy, and not many options for those who don't eat steak (like me), but any food you get will be incredible. the environment was quiet yet welcoming, and there are separate rooms for big parties. read more

Very disappointed in dinner tonight. We have a tradition of going annually for the rib eye caps. They are pricey but sooo delicious. Tonight we had one entry (not the caps) come out cold so they remade it. The rest of us were finished by the time the ravioli came back out. For a dinner that was $1,100 without dessert, we thought the ravioli ($35) would be comped (NOT). Also, price of caps at door was $120 each but on menu said MP and on check was $165. We questioned and they said they forgot to update the door sign. Tried to discuss but waited 10-15 minutes for a manager that never showed. So sad that the experience has tainted a special annual tradition. read more

My filet was burnt and I asked for it to be rare and it was medium rare. The waitress insisted on having a new filet cooked and I told her it wasn't necessary. I had to keep asking for water and I asked for salt. They took away my clean silverware and replaced it. I feel that's wasteful. Dessert was awful. I can appreciate upscale dining but this fell short for the prices. Not going back. read more
