The ambiance was a spectacular southern feel with a quaint charm that transports you back to Bourbon St. The bartender was friendly and talented at drink mixology. Cute little Southern restaurant. We had some French toast and some shrimp and grits. I personally did not like the texture of the French toast. The outside was soft, but the inside wasn't as fluffy as it looked. It was a little too bready compared to standard French toast. Normally, I see French toast as a soft fluffy type of bread. This wasn't that. My partner said it was OK though! But he did say it didn't taste like French toast that we expected. Nonetheless, the shrimp and grits was great, and my partner loved it a lot! The service was OK, but after we ate, we waited about 30 minutes to get our check. They took our dishes and we asked for a check, but we still had to wait 20 minutes after which was a little agitating. We actually had to go up to the front and tell them "hey we asked for a check can we get the check now", is was an experience. I understand it was a weekend and the restaurant was half full. With the stellar four-piece fried chicken, I chose correctly in opting for the zingy red beans and rice as a side. The hush puppies were also very yummy, just either slightly overdone or too coated in breading, I couldn't tell which. The honey butter that came with them was delicious, though. 4.5 stars! We don't have a lot of catfish options where I live so when we travel, I sniff out the fried catfish. I was not disappointed! I also liked the collard greens though they were a little sweet for my taste. Hubbo LOVED his gumbo and 3 of his 4 hush puppies. I thought the hush puppies were very good and more like regular corn bread balls and not like the usual flavor of hush puppies. (I don't actually like regular hush puppies.) The banana pudding was just ok. I had the peach tea cocktail which was very light on the peach flavor but pretty good. Service was quick and friendly. It's a cozy place. We got dinner here during our book club retreat, and were super excited after hearing how awarded it was. We were seated outside, which is in the back half of the restaurant and is like an open air room with chandeliers and greenery; not truly outside by the street. It was a beautiful spot. We ordered drinks and started with the biscuit and cornbread basket, chicken liver, and hush puppies. The biscuits and raspberry jam were very good but we weren't huge fans of the cornbread (chalk that up to 2 of us being from the south with higher expectations lol). The chicken liver was very good, very tender and cooked in caramelized onions. We didn't enjoy the hush puppies, unfortunately. The breading was sort of mealy, like the batter didn't fully stick or wasn't totally mixed? I'm not sure. And they were quite bitter, with a sweet after taste. My back porch lemonade (lemonade + raspberry vodka) was delicious! For our entrees 2 of us ordered the fried chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes, and one of us ordered the catfish with collards. The chicken and the catfish were truly delicious. I've never eaten catfish that good. Perfectly crispy, not at all greasy. The chicken was similarly light and very crunchy, perfectly seasoned. I loved the green beans-- they weren't southern green beans (pole beans cooked w/ bacon and red potatoes), but they were really yummy. Seasoned great and cooked just tender enough. The mashed potatoes, for me, left a lot to be desired. They were really thick, sort of like paste. And the collards were really vinegary. For dessert, we had their banana pudding and devoured it in 2 minutes. It was very yummy. Was excited to try out the famous fried chicken awarded restaurant. Got the 4pc for $29 and bbq ribs $30. Both dishes were delicious but the fried chicken was sadly underwhelming for me. It was great but great as the standard and nothing completely mind blowing, perhaps I had too high expectations. Was still yummy though. 4 pc was 1 drum 1 wing 1 thigh 1 breast. They had 1 side included and the beans were really good and crispy fresh! The coleslaw was yum too. Collard greens really weren't it for us. The service was spectacular as our server was incredibly kind to us, even offering an extra side when we were unsure whether to get collard greens or not and good thing too because we did end up not liking it and him giving us the extra side was so kind. Great place! I've never had a bad meal here. The cornbread and biscuits are amazing, and the chicken and waffles, and mac and cheese are my all-time favorites. The food always comes out hot. The front seating area is small and dimly lit, but the back is very pretty and features a nice bar. Also the walls have some pretty cool pictures/history. I'm going to go out in a limb and say that after relocating here 7 years ago from Philadelphia that I find most of the food in the area overrated. There are a couple of places that stand out as Hattie's is one of those few places my wife and I agree is a legit 8+. This was my first visit to Hattie's. I thought the four piece chicken with Nashville hot chicken sauce on the side with collard greens and cucumber salad were excellent. The sauce on the side is the way to go. The collard green portion was huge, though a bit in the sweet side. The cucumber salad and hot chicken were a terrific pairing. Chicken was perfectly cooked. We had a reservation, arrived early, and were immediately seated. The greeting was warm and the service was solid. My wife had the chicken and waffles which were delicious as well. I'm sticking to the 5 star rating because 3.8 overall is very nit picky. My only issue is my sweet tea lemonade was tiny -- anyone who dines down south knows you always get a big cup. I was never asked if I wanted a refill which leads me to believe you have to pay by the glass? That too would be a negative. So why give stats? Because I'd go back and try everything on the menu. My suggestion? Keep the glass full. Overall, a very good dining experience. Big shout out to the hostess and the waiter. I came in early on a Saturday night and they were able to accommodate me. They were kind enough to let me know the reservation was for 7:30pm and would I be able to comply? Now that is some great training and intuitive thinking by the hostess. Also the waiter was great. There's nothing fancy about Hattie's but that's exactly what we expected. Just a quaint place serving up great food! There were lots of pictures adorning the walls from Hattie's past, which just adds to the history of this place. For an appetizer we enjoyed Fried Green Tomatoes. Was in Saratoga for a one night work trip. The group was looking for a dinner spot and my friend who grew up in the area told me to check this one out so I recommended it to the group. Everything about it was excellent. Well decorated. Food was all excellent. I had the Nashville Chicken Sandwich which was just really really good. Even the kettle chips were great. Beer menu was good, but they were out of the beer I wanted (Abita Purple Haze) and they switched the one I ordered with one some else had ordered and we didn't realize until halfway through so that was unfortunate. In Saratoga Springs for work and I've asked the locals about where I should go to eat. Numerous people mentioned Hattie's so I pulled up, tried out a few things and here's how it went! Atmosphere/Appearance: This place is ALL ABOUT THE FOOD and none of the fanfare. I dig it. This place has been around FOREVER and it has kept its charm. I can totally respect that. The front dining room is a pretty decent size, but this place is located downtown Saratoga Springs so space is limited. There's so much history strewn all over the walls that give way to the red/white checkered tablecloths. Lol. The bar is small, however... If you go out the back of the dining room you'll get to a hallway where the bathrooms are and you'll pass through into a sort of "speakeasy" that transport you back into the south. The atmosphere back there is more lively, the bar is bigger and the focus is more on the alcohol. Service: I can't remember who took care of me, but she was awesome. The recommendations were great, she was patient and made sure I had everything that I needed. Food: So while I was here I was able to check out a few things! So when you get the FULL PORTION of Hattie's Famous Fried Chicken it comes with a breast, wing, leg & thigh. It also comes with 2 sides. I was able to split my order into 1/2 traditional and 1/2 Nashville Hot. The skin was so crispy, crunchy and the meat was incredibly juicy. The flavor was a lil' oily and a bit spicy, but that's the nature OF Nashville Hot. I also had an order of their red bean & rice, a southern stable. They come served side-by-side on the same plate, though I'm used to them being mixed together. It was a bit spicy, about a 3 on my scale. My other side was the Cucumber Salad with consists of red onions, cucumbers and various seasonings. It was deliciously vinegary, crunchy, soothing if the food was too spicy and a bit pickle-y. Last, but not least, was the original recipe! The skin was even crispier since there wasn't a sauce on this piece. The chicken was incredibly juicy and left me speechless honestly. It was so hard to describe the flavors, but they were SO WELL BALANCED. Value: Everything I had costed my $26.00. It was absolutely enough for 2 meals and I think this place has an excellent value. In conclusion, I really loved this place. A hack I learned while here is to eat your chicken OVER your sides so that when the skin flakes off, it falls into your sides and boom, more seeeeeasonin'. It's really expensive and they appear to hate their customers. A Saratoga landmark. Not the fanciest, not in the heart of downtown, certainly far from the most expensive, but absolutely one of the most delicious chicken meals you can get at a restaurant. Another trip to Saratoga and another fine meal from Hattie's. Super friendly people, very fast at getting your order, and very attentive throughout the meal. We got the chicken dinner and the salad with chicken. Both were fabulous. Too much chicken dinner for me to eat in one sitting so I got the rest to go. The side of sweet potato fries were also fabulous. On your next trip to Saratoga be sure to stop by this landmark. Cozy little niche restaurant with a simple, well-rounded menu. The service was good and the food was served pretty quickly. We ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich with the Cajun Coleslaw and the 2-piece Chicken Dinner with collard greens and red beans and rice. The coleslaw was a surprising addition and why I ordered the sandwich. It was a tad dry, so perhaps a little more dressing to compensate for the breading, but the flavor was great. The collards and red beans and rice were tasty compliments to the fried chicken. Additionally, we ordered a basket of the biscuits and cornbread as a starter. While I was not wild about the cornbread, those biscuits and that honey butter! YEP! Amazing! For dessert, we had the pecan pie and a Swiss cake roll and were good. What a treat Hattie's was! It made our weekend at Saratoga even better! The staff were super friendly and accommodating from the moment we arrived. It was so big and the chicken was cooked perfectly and the flavours were amazing. My group ordered a couple different things. The fried chicken plate that was enormous! I actually was expecting it to be something like Hattie B's Nashville but this is your average upscale KFC ... the care is very inviting, decor has a kool vibe to it. It's definitely your spot if you like fried chicken. I love spicy chicken so Nashville hot chicken sandwich was my go to option without second guessing....honestly I was expecting it to be hot, with a spicy kick in flavor but it was such a let down the spicy rub was melo perhaps even sweet. Mothers Day avec Birthday brunch joy at Hattie's. As soon as I walked in I realized I've been here years ago. Well this time I ordered the Cadillac of Bloody Mary's. We went to Hattie's 10 years ago and enjoyed it so much we wanted to dine there again. BUT it was quite disappointing. We were specific on the phone that we had a small dog. (9 lbs) while making a reservation. We knew we couldn't eat in the indoor section but they also had a back section that was tented and open. When we arrived they said the back was unavailable and they stuck us in a side alley. We went along with it and then dealt with bees flying in our food etc. Please be aware that they are not pet friendly and that the accommodation for a pet is poor. Four of us stopped here for a late dinner after the Saratoga Victorian Stroll. Very pleased we did. I had the spicy creole linguine. Though I was told it wasn't really that hot spicy it was a little more than I like, but then I generally don't care for hot spiced food. Yet it was very delicious and not overpowered at all by the hot spices. We had heard about Hattie's chicken and the raves are not overstated. Before I get to the crux of the issue with Hattie's, let me review the more surface-level categories such as food, value, and service. Espresso martinis were amazing. Hush puppies with the honey butter were amazing. Fried catfish was good but not as good as I was expecting. Collard greens were sweet and very well done. Mashed potatoes were to die for. Fried chicken platter was overall good but expensive for the portion size. The red beans and rice side was not authentic and not good. The service was fantastic and all employees were very friendly and pleasant. But there is something very disheartening surrounding modern day Hattie's. Hattie's was opened in 1938 by a Black woman. I'm sure you can imagine the insurmountable struggles she had to overcome during that time (and decades after) especially in a place like Saratoga. In 2021, Hattie's was bought by two white philanthropists, and you can really tell. This is no longer a truly authentic Creole/Black dining experience. It has been completely whitewashed, seemingly erasing much of what Hattie built and the severe racial struggles she had to go through. There were some things that were authentic but others that strayed very far from so. Every single employee was white except for one older Black man. It was very disheartening and I suspect the food was much better before the acquisition by a white couple. Extremely disappointing given the current (and historical) race demographics in Saratoga. One of the ONLY truly authentic Black dining experiences in this area being whitewashed. Perhaps it's a sign of the times, but the experience just didn't sit right with me. I would suggest supporting an actual Black owned establishment instead. read more
