I very rarely write negative reviews about restaurants, but this is a special case. My husband and I decided to come here for dinner. There were no tables available, so we agreed to wait. Afterward, we were seated on the veranda, right behind the cashier. It wasn't really part of the main restaurant area, and the sofa was absolutely terrible, with broken seats. We were very hungry, so we decided to stay. The cocktail was decent enough, but the appetizer--the eggplant--was incredibly greasy and completely tasteless. Furthermore, the atmosphere felt like a fast-food joint. A steak cost at least $65, and for that price, you expect a proper setting rather than feeling uncomfortable. We left after the cocktail and don't plan on returning. I strongly advise against it. read more

I do want to add that although the food wasn't the best for us, our waitress was very kind and they accommodated us with our stroller very well! We will def. The food itself was decent but not worth the price. The ONLY veggie they had was baby carrots- like the kind you buy in the bag from the grocery store. The kind that is apparently pre-washed in bleach. So you can have that unless you pay the $3-4 dollar up charge for 4 PIECES of ASPARAGUS! It's laughable because it's not an even comparison. At least the asparagus was edible. But the price alone was so ridiculous-two meals with two up charges of asparagus and no drinks was $80. Even if I did choose the baby carrots-the dinner was too expensive to serve customers inexpensive veggies. I learned my lesson- I'm better going somewhere else in town where they have salad bar and a full range of veggies to choose from. All I can is WOW!! This place was recommended to us by our Airbnb host. After scoping Yelp, our decision was made! The food was absolutely amazing! As soon as we sat down we were given a small plate of different crackers with seasoned butter. The seasoned butter was very good. I ordered the scallop special. I was only expecting about 6-8 scallops and I was served 12! They were a decent size and full of flavor! My boyfriend ordered the prime rib and it was HUGE!! See picture! Other things that were ordered included Filet mignon and another cut it steak that I don't remember. Dinners include fresh bread, garden salad, veggie and choice of starch. Pro tip: if you chose a baked potato as your starch, put the seasoned butter on it! I went this route and it was amazing. I swapped the Caesar salad for the garden salad for a small upcharge and my boyfriend swapped us garden salad for broccoli cheddar soup. Both the salad and the soup were delicious! We were seated immediately (after striking out at two other local restaurants because we didn't have reservations - cold March weekend). Friendly and attentive staff from hostess to wait staff. Basket of warm bread and salad with homemade Italian dressing started the entrees. I had delicious crab cakes with a light sweet potato soufflé. The carrots were sweet but inconsistent texture. I also had a satisfying, hot cream of chicken and asparagus soup. Husband had prime rib (rare, cooked nicely), garlic mashed potatoes. He even tried the carrots (surprise!). I heard about Caldwell House from a friend that has been going there for years. Admittedly, I have driven past it many times and never noticed it before. Caldwell House has been family owned since the 1960's. The menu is simple "American" fare with a throwback vibe in a log cabin environment. Background music ranges from CSNY to Billy Joel to Michael Bolton...basically 60's-80's tunes. Salads are served in thin, old-school wooden bowls; cheese spread and crackers are brought immediately as complimentary snacks. The interior likely looks very much the same as it did back then. We shared the garlic bread and bacon appetizers. Bacon was thick, slab-style covered in a sweet glaze - salty, sweet and meaty...just as you'd expect. Garlic bread is a large plate that is suitable for sharing with multiple people - so we had plenty of that leftover. We noticed that other tables had plain bread brought to them; I assume that we didn't get the bread basket since we ordered the garlic bread. A pitcher of water is left on the table instead of worrying about having someone refill your glass. Iced tea was good; we didn't have any adult cocktails but there's a full bar menu. They have early bird specials (a few dollars off of some of the popular dinner choices that includes salad and dessert) - up until 5:30pm. We happened to be there on the earlier side so we ordered the prime rib and salmon (early bird) specials. The timing of everything was just right and our server was excellent. The hostess was somewhat abrupt and didn't send off a great vibe at first - so we were thankful that our interactions with her were limited. Some of the other staff seemed to be pretty stressed out - but not our person...nor the bartender. The odd vibes from some of the staff, the old school decor and early bird crowd made it feel like we were on a movie set. Not sure what kind of movie, but it was a little surreal. Getting back to the food - my salmon was served piping hot (and perfectly cooked - not fishy at all) with a side of baby carrots and a sweet potato casserole. Side item choices are baked potato, mashed potato, rice, french fries or sweet potato casserole. Solid reviews on the prime rib. Dessert choices were bread pudding, vanilla ice cream or strawberry shortcake. We ordered some decaf coffee and ate most of the dessert - which was also tasty. I really enjoyed the experience. The food was hot and perfectly cooked. My Alfredo was not lumpy or induce Immediate heartburn like many other places I've tried. It was perfectly creamy. The scallions were a nice touch! The fried raviolis were a starter we tried from the special list. They were huge! And you got so many! The NY strip steak was huge! Lots of leftovers to go home with. The unique thing I saw here was the coke cheese spread and cracker plate you get when you get in. The restaurant has a log cabin, living room vibe. It's very warm and cozy. The service was perfect. Really wanted to like this place. We had a 5:30 Reservation on a Wednesday night with 2 kids, 6 adults. We arrived 10 min early. Put our orders in....got our appetizers...and then sat for an hour. Our waitress was running all over the place except to check on us. She half cleared our table and then ran away again. We sat for another hour. Tables were coming and going and we just sat. When we finally decided enough was enough, she said our food was coming right now - we waited another half hour. We boxed our stuff and left and ate it at home. It was really unacceptable. When we asked what the issue was, she said "the kitchen is like 140 degrees...." She did apologize, but also blamed the kitchen staff...that response absolutely was unacceptable. We were really looking forward to this meal and it was not up to snuff. Unfortunately, wouldn't recommend. If it was this chaotic on a Wednesday I can not imagine how awful a Friday or Saturday must be. read more

I made a reservation for 5:30 PM and asked if we would be eligible for the Early Bird Special and I was told yes! My husband and I ordered from the Early Bird menu and when it came for desert I said I thought the desert was included with the EBS, the waitress informed us that we arrived at 5:35 pm and were not entitled to the EBS. She never mentioned this to us when we were ordering our dinners and we thought we were ordering from the EBS menu!! Under the circumstances I think this was very CHINTZY!! We have been to The Caldwell House many times and we were quite disappointed with their decision. I spoke to the Hostess who was not very accommodating, she said "this restaurant was in business to make money". I would think twice about returning to The Caldwell House!! I don't have a lot of pictures from the night I went here because I wasn't very impressed. We reserved a table, arrived and sat for some time before getting greeted with a newer waitress. No biggie I understand the learning curves. I don't want to mention the waitress again but just know she's new. Three of us had pasta dishes and the only one of us that didn't was the only one who was able to finish his plate. He got the stuffed scallops and loved it. Finished it all! The rest of us got pasta dishes like I mentioned, and all of us came to the conclusion that the sauce was very acidic. Like to a point where I scraped off the sauce and only ate the noodles and chicken bare without the sauce. Not good at all. About the dessert. We got the peanut butter pie because we were still hungry because we didn't finish or eat much of our dinner. And the peanut butter pie is nothing special. I wouldn't come back here. We were guests at a wedding rehearsal dinner here on Thu 11/10/22 5:39pm. Our eldest grandson Dustin and his bride Bailey were the reason for this special event. Out hosts were Amanda & Tarone. A very cozy log cabin restaurant with a neighborhood feel. We were early so we went to the bar for a drink before the other 40 quest arrived. We had quick service on a busy evening. We were seat around 5pm and this party filled the entire main dining room. Our server was Nikia you took our drink orders pleasantly and efficiently. She answered all our question about the three dinner options. We had all three at our table of six. House top sirloin, chicken Caldwell Bleu, & seafood cakes. All were perfectly cooked and served hot, hats off to the kitchen for an excellent job on 40 dinners. Generous portions & creative sides and presentation. Personally my seafood cakes were excellent - shrimp & scallops w/roasted red peppers & onions, minimal breading, pan fried w/ a tangy roasted red pepper aioli on a bed of rice pilaf and sauteed carrots. Delicious from start to finish. Classic American comfort foods served in a rustic cabin setting. The early bird special for $21 is a phenomenal deal. Soup or salad, entree, side vegetable and a starch. Warm bread and whipped butter as well as crackers and horse radish spread are nice additional touches. Started with the potato and cheddar soup which was layered with flavors. Clearly made in house as the potato still had some skin (which I like) and added some body to the soup. The prime rib entree was cooked perfectly medium rare. Packed with flavor accented by even more flavorful jus. The baked potato was generously topped by the waiter with a mound of sour cream, scallions and bacon crumbles. Candied carrots and fried onions completed the plate. Came to Lake George on vacation. One of the locals recommended The Caldwell House for dinner and decided to give it a try and glad we did. We had a party of 12, luckily we had reservations because it was hopping. Our waitress Heidi was awesome! She welcomed us and sat us immediately. Initially we were a party of 10, then 2 more decided to join us. Without hesitation Heidi made adequate room for all us quickly and efficiently. My wife and I had ordered the house wine, I had the Chardonnay and my wife had the Pinot. Was very good! We then had salad with homemade blue cheese dressing and for dinner we ordered the Crab Cakes, mine came with Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes and Carrots and dipping sauce for the Crab Cakes which were awesome, nice and crunchy on the outside and tender inside. One of the best I ever had, the potato's were great too. Everyone else all seemed to enjoy their meals. The Caldwell Hose is a log cabin restaurant, with an inviting warm feel to it. I felt very comfortable siting there enjoying my food and company and the great service. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and if I return to the area I would come back for the Crab Cakes!! At 7Pm of Feb 18, me and 6 other friends drove all the way from NYC to Saratoga for a long weekend, tired and hungry, and this restaurant was one of the recommended award winning place to eat according to my searches of the best in Saratoga. So i told my friends about it. We were a group of diplomats and nurses, and therefore decent people. When we arrived this place, one of my friends went in to ask for a table for 7, while the rest of us waited in the car. She said she was told to wait because the tables will be available only in an hour, or 8PM. My friend went back to the car. I said I will try to negotiate since I am better than my friend in doing that.. When I entered the place, the lady in front told us that there is no table for 7 people. She said the wait will be for 1.5 hours, or 830PM. I became suspicious - when my friend asked 2 minutes ago it was 1 hour and now it is 1.5 hrs? Sounds like she just does not want to sit us. I asked nicely if she can give us a table for 4 and then then other 3 can just follow. She said there was none. I could see there are tables. I asked if they have a place where we can wait, like the bar. She said only 2 seats in the bar, but sounding like she does not really want us to wait there. I said I see empty tables. She said she need those for the reservations coming up. I asked what time is their reservation because if they are not coming in the next 30 minutes, then we will just eat fast. She said that is not possible. She said I stopped being nice and just said "i don't think you are really trying one bit to accommodate us" still in a low voice and smiling. and then another elderly waitress passed by and asked what's happening. i said "i am looking for a table for 7". and the waitress chuckled and gestured using her arms signalling that it was hopeless. I am an Asian and I suddenly felt i was being ganged up by 2 white women bullying me and driving me away. I have not been in a restaurant where I was laughed at and derided just because we are 7 - other restaurants would have rejoiced at having so much people coming in! I cannot help but feel discriminated specially after seeing that everyone in the restaurant are white. If you get no smile, not even a bit, and no effort to find you a table, and just says no to everything you ask for, then there is something else there that is not just about logistics. read more
