The seafood paella was super good at this spot. The server was also very nice. The restaurant overall had a very nice ambience about it.

The food was excellent and fresh. Service was on the slow side but worth the wait.The pasta was cooked perfectly and so was the paella.

The fish is mush it was not properly cooked I went back twice hoping better and their fish is pure mush I got food poisoning second time .!

I started off with the SALT Margarita, which you can have without the salt on the rim of the glass. What good is that, I wonder. I followed with the clam chowder, then the seafood paella. Both dishes were excellent in flavor. A small spoiler -- the shellfish in both offerings come in their respective shells. Yes, even the clams in the clam chowder. Not a problem, really. Just fish the clams, mussels, and oysters out of their shells with your fork. My companion had the shrimp po'boy. It was plenty to eat! Ima keep this short because I hate leaving reviews and using this app but this place needs to hear this and I will back in the morning to let some hear this in person, for the first time in my life I spent 60$ at a place for food and had to stop somewhere else to get more food afterwards.. like dam you guys must of lost your mind to charge 24$ for the 1/2 LB of chilled king carb and brought me one leg on plate of ice that could easily covered the whole table, I didnt know if I was supposed to eat the ice or not because that the only thing that gave me beside this sad place of a crab leg.. After a 12 hour drive we found ourselves in the modest little town of Arcata, CA. After finding suitable accommodations we ventured out into the area looking for food; hoping that McDonalds wasn't going to be our only option. Luckily for us we stumbled upon the Salt Fish House, and much to my surprise this place was 5 stars all the way. I could go on and on about how amazing the food is from the Clam Chowder to the Beer braised clams, and finally to the Cod and Chips. Everything was seriously good; beyond good. We went to Salt on our lunch break. The menu was terribly unorganized. Appetizers and entrees were just mixed together. We each had an oyster My partner ordered a cheeseburger and chowder, I ordered the calamari. After the soup and oysters we ran out of time, so my partner went in to ask if they could just package up our entrees when they were ready. It turned out, our food was ready and was there waiting for our waiter to bring it out. So my partner was standing next to out food when she asked if it could be packaged. The woman she spoke to was incredibly rude. She responded by telling her not to "hover over other people's food.". REALLY? As if standing near food could contaminate it. Never mind that it was our food. It turns out that the calamari I ordered was not an entree as the portion was very small. There was no way to know that from the menu. It didn't matter as it was terrible. I'm sure it came out of a frozen bag like you could buy at Costco, and they just toss a handful into a deep fryer. The breading outweighed the meat. I ate maybe three pieces and tossed the rest. My partner did say her burger was good. It should have been as with tax and tip our lunch came to $64! For that I got an oyster and 1/2 ounce of calamari. read more

Almost a year ago my boyfriend and I were vacationing in Humboldt and tried to eat here but it was so packed, we didn't have a reservation and we needed food so a multiple hour wait was not gonna happen. We were sad we missed out so we decided then and there that when we came back we'd make sure to try again. Well we're back in town and yesterday was our day. We walked in right when happy hour started, and unlike last time we had the whole place to ourselves. After a short deliberation we decided to try everything off the happy hour menu. Drinks came first. I got a margarita and the boy got the bartenders choice. They were both fantastic, well balanced and the bourbon, blood orange, basil smash concoction was fricken beautiful. Then the onslaught of appetizers ensued. I'm not a fan, but the boy said that the oysters were great, he's a purist and liked the raw vs grilled ones better. The chowder fries were incredible. Thin, crispy fries smothered in the most delicious clam chowder I've ever had. I downed the bowl of clam chowder before the bf could have some. The shrimp cocktail and calamari were pretty standard but the quality of the seafood was top notch. Calamari was not chewy or fishy at all and the shrimp was fresh and succulent and all of the sauces that accompanied them were great. The fish taco was also fantastic, so do yourself a favor and order more than one. The fish and chips defeated us in the end, we were so full, but it was eaten later and was still crispy, and delicious. The boy ranked the oysters as his favorite thing but said if you want the best bang for your buck, get the chowder fries. The clam chowder and chowder fries were my favorites as well but the fish taco was a close second. We were so happy and satisfied with everything. Lastly, the service. The bartender obviously knew what he was doing and the drinks we had were so well done. We don't normally go to bars or order drinks when we're out because it's disappointing to spend $30+ on drinks that are mediocre at best, but there was nothing disappointing or mediocre about our cocktails last night. I'd like to go back and try some more of the bartenders creations. Our waitress was rad and took our gluttony in stride. She was attentive and made sure to check in often enough to clear our plates to make room for everything else. She realized we were going to have an insane amount of fries so she offered us a side salad instead with the fish n chips which saved us from total food coma destruction. She was really nice and we appreciated all that she did for us. Overall we had a great experience at Salt Fish House and definitely would recommend it. Happy hour is the most affordable way to go, but everything on their regular menu sounded delicious and we'd like to come back and try it someday. I was not at all impressed with this new restaurant. The floor plan is crowded, especially the bars relation to the tables. I ordered the burger medium rare, and it was grossly over-cooked. I have been twice and both times were great. First time I had the curry shrimp noodle bowl and was blown away by the size of the shrimp (I was expecting tiny/standard, these were large prawns). The sauce tasted good, and the portion was big. I would order it again. Second time I had the burger and let me say it was well worth it. I usually order a burger out at a classy restaurant because I'm either uninspired by anything else or because I'm being a cheap ass. But at Salt I ordered the burger because I was interested in what they had to offer in a burger. I don't remember all the details but it had great flavor in the meat and came on a brioche bun. It was amazing and worth the $$. I've had appetizers both times and they were all good, especially the grilled octopus. I honestly can't remember the others because they were good, I would remember if they were bad. I'm not much of a drinker, but the mixed drinks were damn good. Atmosphere is on par with the food. It's a real nice place with good music. Props to the owners for renovating and turning a old kinda gross Chinese restaurant into a Arcata upscale dining experience. (Give Plaza and Abruzzi a run for their money, two restaurants where you never quite get the same cook/quality with every visit.) Just back from dinner at Salt. I have to say it was an enjoyable experience. The hostess, our waitress, and entire staff were professional, courteous, pleasant, clean, and attentive. They set a new bar for waitstaff at local restaurants. These people were actually trained on how to do their job right. Wow, what a difference. It really sets the tone for your meal. The hostess remembered my husband and I from the weekend before when we tried to obtain a table. Due to unavailability she quickly suggested we come back and encouraged us to make a reservation in future. Smart. That's what we did. That's what you want your hostess to do; secure future business. Otherwise we may not have come back for a few weeks if at all should we hear bad reviews concerning the restaurant. She's Savvy. The hostess also made sure to seat us at an appropriate table since we had our infant with us. Our waitress was patient. We ordered their speciality drinks. My husband ordered the corpse reviver. It was delicious. I also ordered one of their speciality drinks. I didn't particularly like it. I told the waitress. She took it back without hesitation or attitude and suggested a different drink, Thai'd up. It was very good. We decided to go with several small plates. We had the grilled oysters, oyster poor boys, grilled octopus, Thai curry mussels, and the hamachi crudo. My favorite was the hamachi crudo. It was delicate and fresh tasting. Loved the micro greens on top. Tasty and playful. My husband enjoyed the octopus the most. All of the dishes were good. The space is inviting. It's clean and modern. No wallpaper, carpet, dirty plants, algae filled fish tanks, water stained ceilings and/or walls, strange smells and my feet didn't stick to the floor. These are things (along with apathetic staff) which are typical of Humboldt restaurants. Frankly, I'm sick of it. I'd rather stay home than eat in a dirty hole and be forced to deal with a miserable shrew of waitperson. Salt was refreshing due to the environment and way the staff made you feel welcome. Stopped in Arcata on my way down the coast for business. Hotel recommended this place when I said I was craving seafood. The place was small but hopping when I arrived. Since I was solo, I just sat at the bar. James and John, the bartenders, were awesome. Very down to earth. Even though they were busy they took their time to chat with everyone at the bar. Their specialty drinks on the menu were really good. But if you want a real treat, ask them for something unique off menu based on your preferences. James knows his stuff when it comes to booze. The menu is a little limited. But the food was exactly what I was in search of that evening. I had a variety of raw oysters and the fish tacos. Hard to go wrong with good fresh oysters. The fish tacos were amazing. Every other dish ordered by my neighbors at the bar got rave reviews too. Don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. The place is pricey but in Arcata I'd say it's the place to go. In reality, compared to the larger Cali cities it's a steal. If I ever return to Arcata, I'll go back. Just a heads up, it's in a concrete walled basement space so cell signal is non existent. And no WiFi. read more

Nicely decorated and their bar staff is very talented. I love their signature cocktails and the local spirits are a nice Humboldt homage. Every time I eat the food however, it is either too salty (aptly named)or kinda bland and average tasting. I had the calamari twice and both times it was way salty.
