The stars here are for the natural champagne and the oysters. They were great and weren't compromised at all. We were a party of 6. We spent the day at the beach so we came in starving and ready to spend some money. We started with a bottle of wine, 1 dozen oysters and two other appetizers. Like I said oysters were good. So good that we order another dozen and another bottle of wine. Fried calamari was COLD. 1/4 of the dish was fried sliced lemons. Which is ridiculous and wasteful. What were we suppose to do with it? The poke was a shame. Rice, carrot ribbons and an avocado that looked like it crawled out of the compost. I'm appalled that it even got sent out. We sent the avocado back and they brought out an under ripe avocado. It was literally crunchy. We would of ordered more appetizers but they 86d majority of the items. It's a Saturday night on a beautiful day and half the menu was 86d. This is particularly discouraging bc our server didn't let us know ahead of time, so no one got their hopes up for a particular dish. I ordered the harissa shrimp for my entree. I urge the manager or owner to test their cooks on how to cook shrimp. Have them make you this plate. Over cooked. Shrimp only take a few minutes to cook. Any longer and they become rubbery. I believe the squash was kabucha  squash. It had an awful, inconsistent texture. This is California. The land of fresh seasonal food. Why is their WINTER SQUASH on the menu. It's spring! Beets, peas, and greens should be lacing that menu. When you buy in season, you support farms and sustainability in agriculture. Who knows how long that squash has bit sitting around, rotting from the inside out. It was probably hanging out with that sorry avocado. I can't speak for anyone else's entree bc it wasn't mine. But I noticed my friends burger had tomato. Where are you getting a tomato at this time of year??  Replace that tomato with some mushrooms or spring onion! And what's up with the fries? There wasn't one whole French fry. Just crumbs and pieces of fries. Like the bottom of the bag. How do you mess up fries?? The menu needs MAJOR work and the cooks need better ingredients and more training. Here's the thing about dining out: if you have crappy food, there's a chance that the service can be the saving grace. Everyone was "nice" but INCREDIBLY INEXPERIENCED. We literally had to ask over and over for the same items. We had no share plates, no napkins, no water, no utensils. EMPTY WINE GLASSES! Now we all know the most expensive items in the menu are the drinks. If I were the server, I'm not letting anyone be on empty. It's was getting late and all the servers got their shift beers and literally 5 employees standing by the expo window drinking their beer while we were empty. Meanwhile our table is 100% covered in dirty dishes and empty glasses. No one ever came over to over us any dessert or more wine. We had to wave and flag someone down. We wanted dessert but what a surprise, the kitchen was out of everything except 3 jarred key lime pie. We of course, took all 3. When the server came over there was no where to even place them. He had to squeeze them in on our table full of dirty plates. DUDE, CLEAR THE TABLE FIRST. After he put them down he was ready to walk away empty handled! It was ridiculous! Servers hands should never be empty, EVER! We had to ask him to start removing the mountain of dishes. This is all serving 101. The entire staff needs help and guidance. From the looks and tastes of things, the owner doesn't care. The only reason you get away with this quality of food and service is because in a food desert like arcata, there's no competition to keep you on your toes. One of the most disappointing dining experiences that I've had in six years living in Humboldt. We started with Burrata which is one of our favorite dishes. We've had it multiple times in NYC, freshly imported from Italy. The dish we received at Salt was not burrata, rather a small scoop of broken cheese and a plate full of melon, all for a whopping $15. We hoped that our entree would be the saving grace as we ordered the special for the day, the lobster sandwich. Instead we were met with more disappointment. There was legitimately no lobster in the sandwich! We had the server take it back and while they did add more lobster too it there was dirty lettuce in it. Overall a very disappointing experience. The quality control has gone down tremendously at Salt and at Camp Ground. Advice to the owners, hire a chef that knows what he's doing and actually cares about your customers. If you want good seafood, affordable prices, or high quality ingredients, go elsewhere. read more

Last weekend I visited SALT Fish House in Arcata, CA after a long drive from Portland, Oregon, and I have to say, it was worth the trip! My girlfriend and I ordered two platters of Fish n' Chips, and it was exactly what we needed. The fish was perfectly cooked and had a light, crispy batter that wasn't greasy at all. They were perfect and had just the right amount of crunch. They were so good that the fish practically melted in my mouth! The service at SALT Fish House was also excellent. Our server was friendly and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in the door. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a laid-back coastal vibe that perfectly complemented the seafood-centric menu. Overall, I highly recommend SALT Fish House to anyone looking for a fantastic meal in Arcata, CA. The Fish n' Chips were a real standout, but I'm sure everything on the menu is just as delicious. Everything about this place was wonderful. The atmosphere is perfect and you don't feel like you're in Arcata at all. Our waiter was amazing, there was a small delay in the kitchen and he made sure to check on us, give us updates, and have our drinks always full. The food was INCREDIBLE, most of the time when my husband and I go out to pricier places we get the check and think "that thing wasn't worth the price" or "I probably wouldn't order that again", and we didn't feel that way about anything that we got. I had the surf and turf with a Thai me up cocktail, he had the king cod special with a cocktail named penicillin or something like that , and and we shared the lobster mac and cheese and the seared octopus appetizer. 10/10 would order again. read more

Salt Fish House in Arcata was a delightful find! We spent an hour here before meeting up with our travel group at the airport. Lucky for us, it was happy hour! The manhattans were fantastic, and the oysters were fresh and skillfully shucked right in front of us. The French fries with bay seasoning were addictive. Round two of drinks included a refreshing Aperol spritz and a unique lemongrass gimlet with gin, both enjoyable. The kitchen's enticing smells set high expectations for their dinner service, which we unfortunately couldn't stay for. Nonetheless, the poke dish was perfectly curated. My partner and I were initially hesitant due to some of the reviews, but our experience at Salt Fish House couldn't have been more positive. From the moment we arrived, the ambiance was clean, ordered, and inviting. We were pleasantly surprised to be seated without a reservation. Our specialty cocktails, The Green Flash and The Smoke Show, were perfectly balanced and arrived promptly. The 1/2 dozen oysters and calamari were delectable, setting a high standard for the rest of our meal. When my original entree was unavailable, our attentive server offered excellent alternative suggestions, ensuring our dining experience was seamless and enjoyable. I had a great experience at Salt Fish House, now branded as "SALT". The ambiance was fantastic, it had beautiful lighting, a stylish bar, and plenty of seating options, whether you're out for a date night or dining with a group. The overall architecture and design really added to the experience. I ordered the FRITTO MISTO di MARE, which was delicious but definitely a generous portion for an entrée (I recommend it as a shared appetizer). The grilled octopus was well-cooked and enjoyable, though I found it could use a bit more seasoning. On the bright side, the service was attentive and friendly throughout the meal. Definitely the kind of place that you need to make reservations otherwise you're sitting on a bar seat by the doors. Food: delicious flavors, unique combinations, and plated with a sense of design. The fish tacos are really good. The ceviche tostadas are very tiny and do not taste like real ceviche but the fish is fresh and they could be a good option if you are not too hungry. The reason as to why it was okay for a heater to be moved from our table to another is to save gas? Or is because it's a simply racist establishment? I had the Grilled Mahi Mahi, and it was delicious. We also had the Octopus leg and the calamari, which were both good. Only caveat - please get some local fish on the menu, and more small fish (lower on the food chain, better for the oceans and our health).
