Normally, I love Salt Grass, however, this time was disappointing. Seating area was stuffy in the closed room section. It was giving us hospital or sick grandma's house in the country vines. So we asked politely to be moved to the open area. Advised if we needed to wait, they'll be fine. Found a hair in my food, so the waitress took it back to the kitchen for a new plate. My husband didn't get the sides he ordered. Instead if complaining, he kept what he had. The waitress was very nice, maybe new. She spoke with her supervisor, I think his name was Kevin or Eric about the hair issue, I guess thinking he would give us a discount. Nope, he offered a slice of cheesecake. No thank you, sir. This is the thing I will miss most about living in Texas, and the place I will have dinner at every time I am back for a visit! In true Texas fashion, Saltgrass offers huge portions and the best quality steak around. Other high end chains will charge twice as much, but I've always had a steak as good, if not better, at Saltgrass. The steak and vegetable soup is a great starter, and the Shiner Bock bread can't be beat. My two favorite dishes on the menu are the ribeye (melts in your mouth) and the prime rib, which I have gotten on at least two occasions so tender that it can literally be cut with a fork. The service can be hit or miss, but that is true with almost any restaurant. The food is the reason to go to Saltgrass, and it's definitely a reason to be homesick for Austin! read more

Much better than I expected. As a food snob, I tend to avoid chain restaurants like the plague. Especially steakhouses, since you can't walk two blocks without tripping over a top quality steakhouse in Austin. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by Saltgrass. We went on a Friday afternoon during SXSW and largely had the place to ourselves. Service was prompt, as you would hope. Almost every aspect of the meal exceeded our expectations: the bread seemed like it was recently baked, the side salads were fresh and crisp,even the chocolate cake wasn't the typical sugar-bomb affair. We really only had two complaints: We both ordered our steaks medium-rare and they both came out medium well. I realized that slathering steaks with butter is a bit of a tradition, but I feel like you can let a steak speak for itself, provided it's a quality cut of meat. Overall, shockingly good! read more

I'm conflicted about this review. On one hand it was one of the best steaks I've ever had. The staff is great except for the mean little manager guy. There were 3 of us. 2 old ladies were taking up 5 seats at the bar. We asked nicely if they would scoot over as there were no other seats available. They said no. I was a little shocked at that. But ok. 2 other patrons were leaving and that made room for us. We sat down. Ordered drinks. Those were yummy too. With the old lady issue behind us we were looking at the menu when the manager came over and was very rude. He told the bartender to close our ticket I asked why he didn't really give a good reason and I turned away and refused to look at them and my friends dealt with the issue. We ordered and waited for food to arrive. The old ladies left. We all had ribeyes. So yummy. Shortly before we were going to leave the assistant manager came over and told us we are cut off and had to leave. We did nothing at all to get this reaction. We only had the one drink. It's decent for the price but they can't ever manage to give me a medium filet. The first one is always over cooked and then they remake and it's rare. Third time, same mistake, and going to be my last. Manager woman just came over with steak and told me I may want to order "rare plus" in order to get a medium steak. Are you freaking serious!!!! Kind of like a Chili's with a different menu. Look, there's nothing really bad about the Research location, but nothing really good either. Nothing that says, I can't wait to come back. It's predictably bland comfort food that you're probably gonna want once. Parking is ample although we drove by once and had to circle around since the signage isn't clear. The atmosphere is kind of like the County Line with faux western bric a brac everywhere. Appears to be pretty clean but I continue to wonder why you'd put carpet in a restaurant - no telling how dirty that is? The host was prompt and like all hosts immediately took us to the worst table immediately outside the server's entrance/exit to the kitchen: uh, no thanks. At least he didn't register any complaint when I said we needed another table. Our server was prompt and efficient as well. The dinner salads were crisp, cold and fresh although oddly the server didn't ask if we wanted the dressing on the side and my date was not happy about receiving it all over the salad. To be fair, she didn't ask for it on the side either so that's a draw. Our entrees were served after the salads cleared - nice tough there - and appeared to be cooked about right. The garlic mashed potatoes with my dish were warm and tasteless while my date's steak fries were better but slightly burned. The steak is the difference. The filet my partner had did not appear to be a filet, and had I not known I ordered a ribeye I would not have recognized my serving as one. These are not prime choices aged and cooked to perfection: they're volume-purchased basic cuts of beef. Bad? No. Good? No, not anywhere near. Total damage for two with no appetizers (which did not look appealing to us) and no alcohol was $50. About right I suppose although for the value received I'm not sure. We had an awesome experience from the customer service to the food. The host was very friendly. The manager was actually out on the floor helping wherever she was needed so that was great to see. A lot of managers these days sit in their office and you never see them unless there's a complaint but she was right there helping which is awesome! The best part of the whole experience was our server Jordan. Overall the experience was good! We waited for about 15 minutes last night for a table for two around 7 pm so that was good. The server, Andrew walked us through the menu since it was our first time there. Throughout the meal he engaged in conversation and was prompt with drink refills. A very pleasant server. He brought the bread and the butter has a sweet bite at the beginning and the bread is unusual but very good. I believe it's Shiner Boch bread and he said they make it with the same yeast they make the beer with. I ordered a Ribeye and the wedge salad. The salad could have used some more toppings and dressing but, the ingredients were quality and fresh so, I just ate it the way it was. I ordered the Ribeye rare and it was done to a medium but, it was so delicious I didn't even care, I just kept eating it. Didn't want to waste time sending it back for a new one! They put this seasoned butter on top of the steak and it really makes the flavor pop! My friend I was with ordered desert to go and this restaurant is so smart they don't heat your desert and then box it! Rather they let you do it at home!!!! So glad we decided to come to SaltGrass tonight for dinner over our usual steakhouse joint. We were worried the wait would be long, especially on a Saturday night but we were seated within 20 min. Our waiter Jeffrey was THE BEST!! So prompt, helpful, funny. We didn't feel like we had to wait at all for anything. The service from everyone was top notch I can't believe how well EVERY staff member contributed to the environment, when they saw a need they just took care of it, no "this isn't my table so I'm not responsible for it" kind of attitude. It just got done. I had the center cut filet topped with their cooked onion concoction and butter. I NEVER eat my steaks without A-1 but this steak in no way needed it. It was cooked to perfection and the flavor was out of this world. My husband had the ribeye with a side of BBQ shrimp (bacon wrapped goat cheese shrimp) He was in food heaven. My wife and I ate here this past Sunday. Ill keep this short and sweet as there are plenty more reviews. First off, the food was fine. We enjoyed our meal. The service was horrible. Issues were no bread, no drink refills, warm beer, no plates with our appetizer, no silverware with our meal, and a long wait for our bill. We were ignored, as was everyone else who ate at the bar, for the entire meal. For us, this is an expensive meal. So, restaurants have bad days. I understand this. The reason for this review is the call I received the next day from the manager. He acknowledged the poor service we received. I listed out everything that was wrong and he agreed the service was poor. Our night out was ruined as was others who were also served by the same servers. He said he really wanted us to come back. Quoting server light pink center. Received steak at least 40 minutes after ordering all our food (apps and entrees) initially. Steak was rare, bloody. Gave up at this point, asked that steak be removed from bill and please box up everything else as we had been there over a very frustrating hour and a half. I'm a long time Landry's Card holder and I think I've made my last visit to Saltgrass. Saltgrass does not know how to make steak. The filet comes out undercooked 80% of the time and attempts to correct end up with overcooked filet. The cooks and waitstaff have no understanding at all how to cook a steak to desired doneness and how long to let it rest, or that there even is a rest period to let the steak finish itself. It goes form grill to table like some cheap restaurant. I know this because I asked the waiter and this was his response which came with some irritation as if he didn't bring it out fast enough which shows no understanding at all. The ribeye is always a bad cut, thin and without the tender cap. There is no seasoning, it is just warm meat. Ribeye should be the most flavorful cut of steak, yet it comes out as bland and unappetizing as a bottom grade grocery store sirloin cooked without seasoning on a stovetop. It is not suitable for Waffle House steak and eggs breakfast much less a featured entree. The asparagus consistently tastes rotten and the other sides are unremarkable. I used to come here regularly, but last couple years I only came with the birthday month credit. However, a year didn't change anything so I won't come back at all. Saltgrass is a low quality, cheap commercial restaurant and I won't waste me good money again. read more

Back then it was an independent Texas-only chain, but since it has been acquired by Landry's and has expanded quite a bit. I was curious to see if it still held up after becoming more corporate, so I went there for dinner. On a Friday night the place was a zoo, which is exactly what I would have expected. One perk of being a Landry's card holder is that we were able to jump in line and be seated almost immediately. As always you start with their bread and house butter, which is a delicious way to start dinner. I always loved the Range Rattlers--jumbo jalapenos stuffed with shrimp and cheese and deep fried--and was pleased to see they were still on the menu. They were as delicious as I remembered and were bursting with flavor. They have always been one of my favorite appetizers anywhere I have been, and they did nothing to change that tonight. Saltgrass has a large number of choices for dinner entrees, but since steak is their specialty it really only made sense to order a steak, and I always felt their steak was well above average for a place that wasn't an independent proprietor. This night I decided to have the T-Bone with a side of vegetables. The T-Bone was grilled well and had a good flavor, but it wasn't quite as good as I remembered from many years ago. This could be having too high expectations from past experience, but it does feel to me that they have less of the Texas indie steak house and a bit more of the chain feel than I was hoping. With that said this steak makes anything you get at Outback seem like child's play, so the steak was quite delicious and still well above average for a chain steak house. The veggies were also quite delicious, and the portion was monstrous. The one disappointment I had was dessert. I had been looking forward to the margarita pie (their take on a key lime pie), only to find out that it had been removed from the menu some time ago and comes back as a seasonal dessert only. On the one hand this saved me from eating dessert I didn't really need (I was already stuffed, though I was also tempted by the carrot cake), but it left me a bit disappointed nonetheless. I will have to see if I can make it back to a Saltgrass when they do have the margarita pie, as it is an outstanding dessert, or at least was when it was a regular menu item. The service was fantastic, and the prices still felt reasonable for the quality you received. The portions are quite large, so if you leave hungry you either didn't like your food or have just done something seriously wrong. I did thoroughly enjoy my meal, but I still feel like Saltgrass isn't quite as good as it once was. Still, it is better than the vast majority of other family steak houses, so it is a hearty recommendation if you love steak, good food, and huge portions. read more

Rustic charm with good food and good service. This is not a top-tier steakhouse, but my steak was quite good and reasonably priced for a nice cut. Seasoning was worth the trip. Pineapple Margarita would not be a normal selection for me, but it was a real treat! I am a little embarrassed I liked it as well as I did. This was the first time either of us had been to Saltgrass, and since I've been going to the more up scale steakhouses downtown I thought the food wouldn't be too good...I was completely wrong! The food was actually pretty delicious and the service was extremely fast! We ordered: brisket queso, salmon topped with lump crab meat with a side of herb rice and fried asparagus, the 22oz porter house with fries, raspberry tea, and some moonshine cocktail. We were too stuffed to even consider dessert! I don't eat steak but the birthday boy said it was the most tender steak he's ever had. And my salmon was INCREDIBLE! For awhile I stopped ordering salmon because I was always disappointed , but a steakhouse has restored my faith! Lol Also,our waiter (Wayne or Wayde?) was amazing! He was engaging and accommodating. I was very happy with the service we received from him. :) The only reason it's 4 stars and not 5 is because of the atmosphere. It's a silly observation but I thought it was too bright in the restaurant. I'm used to the dimmer, traditional, setting. I don't go to Saltgrass often, maybe once every three to four years, and this visit reminded me of the reason why. Yes, the meal is relatively pricey but then it should be worth it. Note my 2-stars and the two words, "should be". 9pm on a Friday night, seated immediately. Waitress arrived within a few minutes, took drink orders (tea), came back in 5 to deliver drinks/bread/ice tea carafe and take orders, no problems so far. Wife and I haven't eaten since noon, we devour the hot fresh bread within minutes, before salads arrive. 9:16pm, Salads arrive, I'm not impressed. Two big tomato slices (not wedges) from beefsteak tomatoes (still cold from the fridge), cheese sprinkled on top, and a not very sweet honey mustard dressing. I eat because I'm starving. 9:37pm, Main course arrives, looking up (maybe?). I've ordered a 9oz Center Cut Filet (medium well, no blood) with brussels sprouts (which the waitress assured me were sauteed). Brussels sprouts: obviously cut thin with a food slicer and then cooked on the grill since they were still "chewy/crunchy" as any greens cooked on a grille will be. They come with bacon and onions, I ordered no bacon, they arrived with ..... tiny bacon bits. (I ate all my onion rings and brussels sprouts first) 9:43pm, Steak: The steak is actually good quality, I can tell by the texture of the meat. One side of the steak has grille marks and is cooked med-well, the other side has some burnt crisp around the edges. I cut into the steak in half, and that tells the tale. The middle is pink, verging on blood, while the outside edges are grey. Hmmm, is your chef a cooking school dropout or did he miss class that day when learning to cook steak? As I ate through the rest of the steak, I even came across a corner that was all grey. Meanwhile, the place is about 1/3rd-full, the other wait staff are actually sweeping under the tables next to us and setting for tomorrow. The waitress checked on us after 5 minutes, "All good?" (whatever) We never saw her again until we finished. We also were never offered or had any more bread brought. The ice tea carafe is half full of ice, which waters down the tea. And I got all that for the bargain price of $75. Strangely enough, I met someone the next day, in a city 50 miles away we were both visiting, from Louisiana. I told him where I ate the previous night, he immediately told me how ever since it was bought out by the current owner (TF) that it's terrible. This owner buys businesses like this and then runs them into the ground squeezing the last nickel of profit. Since I prefer evidence, I went looking because I can remember when it was actually a decent restaurant when it opened about 20 yrs ago in our neighborhood. Sure enough, business was bought by TF in 2002 and the last 2-3 times I've gone during that time span, it just seems to have gotten more expensive with a decrease in the dining experience each time. And the thing that really kills it? I would have given them at least 4 stars IF: -more bread -less watered down tea -better prepared salad -brussels sprouts cooked properly, delivered per order, and doubled in quantity -properly cooked steak Those 5 simple things right there. And there weren't even any mints at the door on the way out to take the bad taste out of my mouth. Saltgrass wants my business back? Yeah right. The only way that is going to happen is if they fix the problems I listed above and then have me back as an anonymous diner for a free meal. Yeah, we'll be waiting for THAT to happen, LOL. We had just gotten done having drinks on Rainey Street and decided to give the spot to try. I ordered the 12 ounce prime rib medium rare with skin out perfectly. I also had the wedge salad which came with ranch which I thought was a bit odd so I asked my server Maureen if I could substitute blue cheese. She said that wasn't going to be a problem. Fortunately, Dante, our server was the only delicious thing about our experience. He was absolutely a dream. Our food came and my mother in laws was disappointed in her meal (which she had ordered before and it was wonderful). All the sudden Steve popped up at our table and was asking what the problem was. Before she could get her thoughts out he was cutting her off, loud and argumentative. At one point Steve said I'm not going to argue with a guest as he continued to argue mainly with himself bc she never raised her voice once. In fact, he embarrassed her with the volume of his.
