Hadn't eaten at Saltgrass for over a year. A friend and I decided to try for dinner since we were both in the mood for steak. I had the 8 oz Top Sirloin and friend had the Porterhouse. Both steaks were tender and done to our liking but the issue was the amount of salt used on the steaks to the point you were unable to enjoy the flavor of the meat. I also had the baked sweet potato that had a huge amount of butter, sugar and cinnamon to the point again the flavor of the potato was hidden. It out server has too many tables, as he did not have time to check if all was acceptable and showed up when time for the check. We went to the Salt Grass for our 31st anniversary, we have eaten here before....but this time it was beyond our expectations ! Our server was so wonderful attentive but not intrusive, I believe his name was Dillon...sorry I am so bad about names. Hope this is yours! You deserve a raise!! Sunday night after the F1 Race, our expectation was for a busy night; however there was no wait, at 6:45pm. I guess that should have been our warning since almost everywhere else we called had at least a 30 minute wait. We went thinking we got lucky, not so much! The food: Artichoke dip - average Rib-eye - 3-4 oz of fat that could have been trimmed prior to service Sirloin - heavy marble, I would say the quality of a top round to be served in chili Baked Sweet Potato - GREAT! Soup / Salad see below The service: When you hear multiple servers say to several tables how sorry they are for something that is never a good thing, the table to our right waited 20 minutes for their check, the table to our left waited 15-20 minutes for refills on iced tea and water. The table behind me had a bus-girl drop an entire tray down his back. And then there was us, we did not receive our soup or salads nor did we receive our drinks, we did get water but not iced tea. More over when we asked the person who brought our food out (not our server) they in tune stated how sorry they were and would get it right away. Finished our meal, sever pushed the deserts with out asking how our meal was, at this point I asked for our check, and started the clock! 16 minutes later our bill came and sure enough they charged us for the drinks we never received. I asked for him to correct the bill and to informed him of how poor the experience had been; again with the I'm sorry, 11 minutes later we got our corrected check. At almost break-neck speed of 10 minutes later I got my card back, with the subtraction of the drinks, and another sorry. Total bill was $73.00 for two steaks, no drinks an appetizer and some really bad bread. All in all this was a significant waist of time; it would have been worth the wait my guess is almost anywhere else. Of all the restaurants we visited this weekend, and over the past 15 years we have been traveling to Austin this is by far the worst experience we have ever had. I would recommend just about any other steak house, local or chain over Salt Grass and if you do go, I hope your experience is nothing like ours. read more

Saltgrass steakhouse consistently serves excellent steaks. We have eaten at this location over the years and not once did we not enjoy everything there. The wedge salad is fresh and tasty. The filet Oscar is out of this world. It's tender, juicy, every bite is delicious. Their complimentary bread is fresh and soft right out of the oven and you will want one just for yourself. On top of that, what's more remarkable is you can get a membership for $25 and get $25 credit immediately for your meal. So, basically, the membership costs nothing, but you get a free $25 meal every year around the month of your birthday. If you eat there just for that occasion, you get one free meal every year. But, if you eat there more than once a year, you also get credit for the money you spend, and get $25 credit after you spend $250. So, with a deal like that, I have to say this is my kind of steakhouse. (Update: 1/2/2018) I originally gave this restaurant a 5 stars, but now I only give them a 3 stars. My waiter sucked worse than any waiter I have ever had. Anything we asked for took freakin forever. I mean simple shit. Extra lemons for sweet tea took 10 mins., straws for our drinks, I had to go to the bar and get them for almost everyone myself, he refilled my tea with unsweetened tea and then once he realized it says, "oh you can just add some sweetner to make it better" instead of just getting me a fresh drink. Upon arrival, the waiter did not offer any bread nor did he refill any of our drinks. Once we received our steaks, he didn't ask if it turned out right. I go here every Thursday for lunch for a standing business meeting in the private dining room (to the north of the main dining room). Private is relative here because the noise from the restaurant is a bit intrusive but we can work with that. I think the food is ok considering the price but always too much butter, what's with that? I had a chicken breast today and it was quite good and the gal next to me had a good lookin' hamburger on her plate (like I actually said to myself "hmmm, I'm going to order that next time"). We have had fair to good service (except one time it sucked ... they know we're coming every week so the service should be good. One thing I definitely like is the hostess and how she greets everyone at the door, opening the door, cheerfully sending saying hello and cheerfully sending us on our way after our serving of butter. read more

We used the side room for a client event. The room can hold up to 30, but that would be too tight. 1 hour lunch on a preset menu. Orders were taken at beginning of the presentation yet food took at least 20 min+ to arrive. The flimsy folding door to enter the room is loud and distracting. The food was good. My Caesar salad was bland, but the Pat's ribeye and steamed veggies were delicious . Based on the delay for food service, the dessert menu came out as we were rapping up the presentation. I didn't have dessert, but they looked rich. Side note: on family visits we order the seafood fondue, and it's devilishly good. Cost is very reasonable for larger groups, but the noise from the restaurant is distracting. Today was my Wife's birthday. I packed her and our three boys into the minivan and took my wife to get her a steak as we've done many times in the past. When I walked in, the hostess tried to seat us immediately adjacent to the front door. When I asked to be seated somewhere else, she seated us immediately adjacent to the Kitchen. There were many other open tables... The establishment was far from crowded, and I and my family were offered seating at the two least desirable tables in any restaurant. We all ordered our usual dinners... I got my steak, and instead of the nicely cooked, tender and juicy slab of flavor I've come to expect from this establishment, I was offered up a slightly overcooked (This alone wouldn't have been enough to bother with) hunk of tough that was worthy of the lunch special at a strip club. Neither I or my family will be back. It's a real shame... this used to be a good restaurant serving a good product at a reasonable price. read more

Wow. Save $60 and buy your meat elsewhere. This is not a review on service, as we ordered takeout. This is reviewing product only. My husband and i ordered the ribeye. ~$25 a piece. The second I opened my Styrofoam box, I had regrets. The steak was a pale brown, 1/16th an inch thick. I commented instantly that the meat looked off. I eat my meat rare and my husband medium rare. Never an issue bc we buy good quality meat. We expect the same, if not more, from a STEAKHOUSE charging what they do. I got half way through, before my stomach started screaming at me to stop. My husband was up in the middle of the night sick as well. I've seen better looking meat served in a cafeteria! There was gristle so tough, after chewing for 10 minutes, i had to spit it out. The baked potato was steamed, not actually baked as you would expect from a steakhouse, so it was soggy. Overall, super disappointing. Never * I repeat * never going back. On Saturday, June 4, 2011, we took a party of 11 to the Salt Grass for dinner. None of us had eaten there before. It was graduation weekend, and we thought we wouldn't be able to get a reservation anywhere. We called the Salt Grass Saturday afternoon and made a 6 pm reservation with no problem at all. We arrived to find a table set up for us in a cozy spot at the back of the restaurant. Our server was outstanding. He brought us at least 5 orders of their delicious bread, refilled our drinks without us asking and checked on us over and over again throughout the meal. Three of us ordered the prime rib and it was cooked medium rare to perfection! The baked potato was hot and loaded! The roasted vegetables were delicious, our salads were fresh and crisp. Four young children at our table had hearty, creamy orders of mac and cheese. One adult ordered the grilled shrimp and rice and declared it exquisite! I can't remember a time when all 11 members of my family have been so completely satisfied with the food AND the service and atmosphere at a local restaurant! We live in NW Austin and, in my mind, it is the best meal we've had together in years!! As we left the restaurant, every server we passed thanked us for coming in.
