This restaurant has the best fine dining menu in Beaufort. The food is interesting and well prepared. The dining room and bar are comfortable and nicely decorated. However, over the last ~10 years or so Saltus has turned itself over to the tourists. They show up in autobiographical outfits. Shout at each other like grandad the air hammer operator. There's a difference between a lively and rude setting. Totally ruins the experience. A relative from Atlanta once referred to Saltus as "chic and unexpected." Not any longer. Other downtown restaurants try to accommodate locals - you know, we dress appropriately, eat local frequently, make reservations well in advance, are nice to staff, tip above average. Not Saltus. Last time there, the dining room was over sold. I offered the harried hostess to sit at the bar or an open booth. These kids work hard. She put us at a two top, shoved against a wall, in an unlit corner with a view of the open kitchen door with dropping plates and crashing trays. Our waiter joked we must be trouble makers. She said it would be 45 min for a better table ( my reservation a week in advance) but there were several open tables in the dining room within 10 minutes. The experience made Saltus into Johnson Creek Tavern. Disappointing. read more

I also ordered the chicken and dumplings which was absolutely amazing in its taste and presentation. As far as the pricing, figure $50-70 a head to truly enjoy the Saltus. Beautiful view of the river with wonderful food. We sat outside and enjoyed the fire pit. My friend and I shared a spicy tuna roll and the mussels. They were so delicious. The mussel broth was so good that we asked for more bread to soak it up. Nice wine and beer selection. Our service was slow but he was very nice. read more

It's one thing to treat guests well. It's something quite different to treat wedding vendors well. I photographed a rehearsal dinner here tonight and every single staff member was pleasant and accommodating. They helped me find a place to put my gear, made sure to be courteous about not stepping in front of the camera during special moments, and y'all...they even fed me. They fed me WELL. We have been customers of this restaurant every time we travel to Beaufort. This time we arrived early for our reservation. They wouldn't seat us even though most of the tables were empty. This place was god awful. To begin, they told us it was going to be a 30 minute wait, it ended up being over an hour. Every time we went to double check on our table the hostess kept saying it's just going to be 10 more minutes. I came here out of town with my family and we were all extremely disappointed with both the food and service. Our food took over an hour to arrive and keep in mind that this place was not busy. My dad's steak was undercooked and way too salty, my mom and aunt didn't like their flounder. I ordered a lobster sushi roll and the waitress, Lacy, comes back with my food and gives me a lobster salad instead. I told her this wasn't what I ordered and she goes, "well looks like you have a lobster salad now." Unacceptable, the lobster salad was disgusting and soggy by the time it arrived to our table. She then proceeds to say that they didn't have any more sushi rolls which I find hard to believe and offered me fried shrimp which was gross and you can tell it was just previously frozen and then deep fried. Avoid this place at all costs, way too overpriced for awful food and horrible service. read more

Excellent restaurant! First of all want to mention we have a baby and he was being fussy during dinner. We originally had a table inside but due to the baby we were basically having to walk him around outside. The hostess and our waiters were very accommodating and we actually moved to an outdoor table mid meal. Service is just top notch, never made us feel uncomfortable or unwanted due to our kid. The food is also incredible! The best grouper I have had on our trip. We also had some tuna shashimi which was top notch. The rest of our party was also very satisfied with out food. This spot has very limited non-alcoholic beverages. The sweet tea had this terrible after taste. I got the chicken parmesan and it lacked taste tremendously. The pasta had a watery after taste. This was the second time we attempted to eat here. The hostess was very cold and rude. We asked for a table for two and was told there was a wait, which was fine. We decided to go to the bar and have a drink while we wait. there was 4 employees talking at one end and three at the other end. we stood in front of two barstools where someone had finished their meal and left. Amazing!!! My husband took me here for dinner on the first day of our winter vacation. The ambiance is very romantic with a beautiful scenic waterfront view. Outside is illuminated and a beautiful fireplace to enjoy a glass of wine. We both ordered the shrimp and grits, and we can easily say that it was probably the best serving of Grits we have ever had! The service was great and they brought out fresh bread once we placed our order. I would recommend you request butter the olive oil is a little sour. I had stayed away from Saltus on previous trips to Beaufort because the interior scene didn't speak to me. My wife and I sat at a nice outdoor table near a fire pit to give it a try in mid-November. We were wowed. The Crab Louis salad was the best thing I've had in a while, simple and delicious. The pate plate was great. My wife swooned over the beef tartare. Service was excellent. This would've had a 5 star rating due to the food and pleasant surroundings, unfortunately other things happened to cause this lengthy review. It all started out great. We were seated nearly immediately outside upon our arrival. Drinks were ordered and served. It was shortly after this that we noticed birds directly above us squawking. We didn't mind the sound, but knew that we were in direct line of fire should those birds decided to poop. We let the waitress know, who then told the manager. We asked to be moved to an open table away from the birds and the potential poop. The manager was very reluctant. She then adjusted our table a very little bit to hopefully move us out of the direct line of fire, which it did not. Sure enough, the bird pooped on my husband. Now we understand that "nature" happens and isn't anyone's fault. But we had asked to be moved and after this event, wanted to go to the other table, but as we were about to ask that, people were being seated there. We were disappointed that the reluctance of the manager to move us when we had asked had then seated someone there afterall. And for the record she never said it was reserved because it is first come first serve. After the bird pooped, they flew away so all was ok and we decided to stay outside. The biggest gripe was the manager. All she said was "ohhh dear." She didn't offer to comp us even a drink. Our son is a manager at a very high end restaurant and would've comped the whole meal if that had happened to a customer. We were surprized, to say the least, that nothing was offered. We actually, at the end of our meal, asked if the drinks were on the house for the occurance and our waitress, who was lovely and more than attentive, said no. She could "maybe do a dessert, but only one." We were more than disappointed at the lack of the management to take care of customers who were really put out due to birds. We spent the whole meal looking up to make sure no more birds were near us. This is a beautiful location, the food is good, and would've been so nice if our issue with the birds would've been addressed more appropriately and I wouldn't have had to write my first negative review ever! read more

We were there for the Easter brunch. The good was we were seated promptly and our waitress Margaret was wonderful. She was attentive, pleasant and really helped us enjoy our experience. Perhaps a clue should have been that the restaurant was barely half full when other restaurants in town were booked fully. The menu was odd at best. We did read their Easter buffet menu on line but I guess we felt they were highlighting the entrees and would supplement the "extras." There was prime rib that was very good, a somewhat dry strata, fried chicken cut in unrecognizable pieces, what was billed at crispy hash brown but resembled McDonalds hash brown wedges, grits, bacon and peel and eat shrimp, yogurt and some very lovely cut up fresh fruit. While everything was ok, except the hash browns, there was not a vegetable or salad in sight. Most things were either a starch or fried. There was no way for anyone wanting to eat a little more healthy to make any good food choices. The four of us at our table could not believe the lack of fresh greens or vegetables. Desserts sat out quite awhile and were a tad dry and uninspiring. For a buffet with a drink and coffee/tea per person and tip that ran about $50 per person it wasn't worth it. The atmosphere is fun & inviting. My party of 4 met & spoke with locals at the bar. When we were seated ( where we'd requested) the menu was presented. My dining companions ordered seafood apps (not my cup of tea). After ordering entrees it seemed like it was a bit of a wait til food. I spoke with manager Michael who was accessible & responsive. Since Saltus River Grill is described with the keywords "seafood" and "sushi," we decided to order some sushi, in addition to the beef tenderloin. The best part of sushi is its simplicity--the natural taste of fresh fish should do all the talking. At Saltus, however, the chef felt the need to add all sorts of unnecessary garnish on top and in the sushi--chopped up bell pepper, fried batter, etc., and overpowered the fish. The rice was also way too soft (cooked with too much water and the wrong type of rice was used). The sushi was all kinds of wrong. As for the beef tenderloin, the meat was tender and cooked just right. As for the taste, meh. All in all, the food was nothing extraordinary. The service, on the other hand, was wonderful. Tonight was our second visit to Saltus River Grill and it did not disappoint! We visited last summer when we vacationed close-by and have been eager to return again tonight. We were promptly greeted and accommodated as we tried to decide whether to sit inside or on the patio due to the possible stormy weather. Sara was phenomenal in making suggestions and answering questions both about the menu and weather. She was kind enough to let us know when to head inside to a table to avoid the rain. When it didn't rain she continued her wonderful service inside. Espresso Martinis, Chili margaritas, Peach Mules, Single Ladies oysters, eel and mahi sushi, and the special Benne Crusted Mahi were all beyond expectations and tasted fantastic!! I was really upset when Bateaux moved away from it's beautiful waterfront location. While we still visit them on a regular basis, but I'm happy that during their relocation we discovered Saltus downtown. Saltus is much more modern than anything else I've been to in Beaufort. It definitely has the vibe of a big city restaurant, and fortunately the food and service lives up to it. Seafood is obviously the way to go here, and I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered. Be sure to check it out if you're looking for a nice dinner in Beaufort but would rather not blow it all out by going to the Beaufort Inn. read more

We were visiting Beaufort this week and returned to Saltus after enjoying a wonderful dinner there in October. We were so impressed with the creativity and ingenuity that went into the menu. We were back this past Friday for dinner. The hostess and wait staff were polite and friendly. The wine list was fine but not nearly as good as it was in the fall and they were out of a couple of wines. We ordered by the glass instead of a bottle. The menu was 1/2 of what it was and lacking in options for non-meat eaters. The scallop offering came with pork, many of the dishes seem to come with collard greens, some with boiled peanuts? Seriously? My husband ordered the crab bisque, it was really lacking, he didn't finish. I ordered the crab cake, it came drowning in a too-rich, heavy cream sauce with no real crab meat in it. It was a bowl of mush. I may have had two bites. Lastly, he decided to try the Cornmeal Crusted Tuna, he took one bite ... the tuna was old and not fresh. He left all but one bite on the plate. At this point, we promptly asked for our check so we could go find dinner elsewhere. I felt sure the waitress would ask if we didn't care for our food or if she could bring us something else. All of our plates were over 1/2 full. It seems part of her job to notice if a customer isn't eating the food she delivered. Date night done RIGHT! We were given a date night out as a Christmas present so we were expecting A LOT! What we received was A LOT MORE!!! I wish I could give this restaurant, wait staff, chef and manager more than 5 stars...it was that good. When my wife and I arrived we were greeted warmly and seated immediately. Danielle was our server and she was awesome. We started with drinks, a Metropolitan and an Old Fashion - both delicious. We began with the soup du jour (sweet potato and spicy sausage - so good!!) and the crab bisque (very good too). We then moved to the main course, sea scallops and the shrimp and grits. So flavorful and the scallops were good sizes and seared nicely. Finally, we enjoyed the the pecan pie with cinnamon ice cream and the chocolate Trimble with salted caramel - exactly as it sounds, perfection! We came Friday night, but you had to have a reservation because they were booked up. So we made a reservation for Saturday night, and we were not disappointed. The food was wonderful, from the fresh, crisp Caesar salad, to the perfectly seared scallops and sauces. Everything my wife and I ordered was delightful. Our server, Lacy, was very knowledgeable about the menu, how things were prepared, and was eager to help us get exactly what we were looking for.
