The restaurant is a little tucked in the corner and not well lit. The inside was much nicer than the outside let on. Lots of televisions and excellent service. We had dinner with a large group of people (12) and they did a great job accommodating us. The food was excellent! We had the Alpo appetizer (fantastic for a group) and an extra order of Salty Balls. For dinner, I had the sourdough burger, which was phenomenal! Each half of the burger had an entire hamburger patty on it. The portions were so huge, I gave half of my burger away. There are LOTS of options on the menu, which satisfied the picky kids and a variety of adults. We will definitely go again if we are in the area! read more

We live nearby and go here about twice per week. Good food, good beer selection, mixed drinks are also pretty great. Their French fries, grapefruit margarita (the salty dog) and Bloody Mary are my favorites. The guys and girls in the kitchen and bar are always personable and service is always great. First and Last: This was our first and last visit to the Salty Dog. Sat. evening 7:20 - 8:40 for food after a Lady Bear game. When we arrived it looked busy and were welcomed by sit wherever you can find seating. There were 4 of us. The only table available was one that hadn't been cleaned and it took 10 min. for someone to clean it. So the cleaner was our waitress and she took our drink order. Another 10 min. and we had drinks and she took our order (7:30). After about 40 min. the waitress came and said our order would be up shortly. after another 15 min. my wife went looking for our server who was apparently busy behind the bar. So wifey asked for someone to find her. Another 10 min. she appeared with the order. The order was not complicated; two burgers w. fries and "Salty Dog" eggs. One burger was rare but our friend ate it anyway as he was hungry...thought the beer would help kill anything in the meat. My mac and cheeseburger was like shoe leather with cold mac and cheese and bacon on a barely warm burger, after a couple of bites of the burger I took the catsup and drenched the fries but could only eat about 1/2 of them. My wife and friend had the "SD" eggs which were not hot and the chicken inside was extremely dry. The waitress came back and asked how everything was and we told her. She said that she would talk to her manager and after another 15 min. she came and said the burgers would be discounted?????? They took $3 off of each burger which we thought was very generous NOT! Hey, we are not big drinkers but since we were there we my friend and I each had a beer. This is a "bar and grill" so they make their money on drinks. Anyway, I am tired of talking about this place but we are sure the young waitress did her best and gave her the minimum tip. But hope she does not have to share it with anyone in the kitchen. If you want decent food, eat elsewhere. It started with me asking our waitress about drink specials and she said, "They didn't have any." This was Friday at 5pm and there was a chalk board that showed happy hour from 3-7. Then, she gave the customers at the table next to us drink specials. My burger was okay but nothing special, the fries were not good. My husband got the seafood basket and the oysters were bad. He took a bite a spit it out. They oozed, which is gross and tasted sour he said. The shrimp and fish were bland. It was disappointing because we had heard good things. We waited over 15 minutes to get our check so we could leave because the waitress did not come back. A lot of the staff liked to talk and the cooks were out if the kitchen consistently chatting up the waitresses. Our waitress did keep my husband's drink refilled but that is about as positive as it gets. The hostess was awesome, working non-stop and helping everyone. read more

Seems like an alright place with TVs, but definitely NOT a sports bar. Went in for the first time yesterday on what should have been one of the best sporting afternoons of the year, the first day of March Madness. However the atmosphere was similar to studying at the library, as in it was boring and quiet as hell. No sound on any of the four games going on, lots of TVs not even on the games. Not sure they had all 4 games on at all, or that they even were aware. Quiet, and I mean quiet, music playing in the background. Wth, right? Great if you needed to catch a few z's though. Guess I'll be going somewhere else to watch sports in this town. Too bad because the place definitely has potential. read more

Extremely poor service. The bar was almost completely empty and we waited for over an hour for our food. When we asked what the hold up was, the waiter said "3-5" minutes. After that time had passed another waitress came by and said it was just now being made. We left and will not come back. Apparently you have to be drunk and over 40 to receive quality service because that's all that was there. read more

My son and I went to the Salty Dog for the first time tonight for dinner. I had chosen the spot based on other inputs on yelp. When we arrived we had a little trouble finding the restaurant, because it's tucked in the back of what looks like a business park and from the road there aren't clear signs. We both were glad we found it and we were very pleasantly surprised. We started with the Wings. Being from upstate New York, I do have to try the wings at just about every place I go that has them, or at least my first time out. These were very tasty and hot, both temperature and spice-wise. They weren't true "Buffalo" Wings, but they were still excellent with a lot of flavor and spice, rather than some we've had that were just plain hot with no flavor. My son had the Bacon Cheddar Burger which he said was one of the best burgers he's had in awhile and he lives off them. I had the Chili Burger and it was excellent, as well. The roll was fresh and the flavor of the chili, jalapenos and cheese was fantastic. I also was almost full after eating about a quarter of the burger. The fries were fresh cut and cooked about medium and they too were excellent. On travel, I do eat at five star restaurants from time-to-time, so I can't give a higher grade "star-wise," but the four stars should not be a reflection of the quality of the meal. It's one of the better ones I've had in Waco in awhile. Lastly, our server was a girl named "Jennifer B" and the service she provided was cordial, prompt and attentive. She had a couple of other tables and she still came back every couple of minutes to check on us. We never had a water glass below half and she also helped to make the experience excellent all around. Additionally, one of the other waitresses checked on us, as did the bar tender to make sure everything was good. If you have a chance, I would recommend your' finding your way over to the Salty Dog if you're in Waco and looking form plain old fashioned good American Bar food with a wide variety of choices. There also was quite a bit of seafood and crawdads on the menu, as well, but we only had room for what we tried. read more

Do NOT go there if you want to browse every game on the Sunday Ticket. During week 1 of the NFL season, they only had up three games, spread across 10+ televisions. I was told the manager didn't want to put on all the games so I left and went to Buffalo Wild Wings. Best decision ever. read more

I visit this place frequently, and I think it's an under-appreciated Waco spot. The food will not blow you away, but The Salty Dog had a diverse menu, and everything is SOLID. Their beer and burger selection is really good, but they also have some "dog bowls" - I had a fish/rice dish and thought it was great. It's not in the greatest location, but gets a good mix of locals and Baylor students. My friends and I have always been able to get in right away, even on game days.Overall, it's a great place to grab a beer and watch a game. One of our favorite places to hang out and have some drinks, alone or with friends. If we are going out to a bar, this is the one. Alot of times we order food, whether it be an appitizer or an entree, we have never had anything that wasn't good. I feel like a lot of people forget about this place other than crawfish season! Come here for the crawfish and oysters when they are in season, I missed out so much while going to buzzard Billy's! However when it's not in season they still have a huge menu selection and the nachos are amazing! You can also get any burger they have as a salad and it's a great low carb option! This seems like a really cool place although, I have only been here once. The waitstaff was great, the place was enjoyable, there was only one issue- They have no idea how to boil crawfish. I ordered a few pounds and when it arrived, it was covered in seasoning which can be fine but it's the seasoning and soaking that occurs in the water that it seems that they did not do. It tasted like they boiled them, took them out of the water, threw them on a plate, covered them in seasoning and searched them. I didn't even finish and THAT has never happened! Other than that, Salty Dog is a really cool place. I'd go back...just won't be ordering their crawfish any more. read more

Great place to grab a brew and watch the game. Couple of local taps (Bare Arms, Pedernales, Guns N Oil) along with the macros. Good looking menu but didn't eat this time around. Bartenders and management were very nice. Definitely will be in the rotation. And they even have the MLB package available so that rules. read more

This place advertise that they are open till two A.M, but they never are. The management closes when it the bar is slow. I wish the owners new they were losing money on late night costumers that end up going to a bar that is true to their hours. read more
