I recently stopped by Sam Won Garden for lunch with a friend. We got there right when they opened, and there was plenty of available seating. They offer both KBBQ and a regular menu, and since we weren't that hungry, we decided to order off the regular menu. I got the dolsot bibimbap, which came out hot and sizzling, and my friend ordered the beef bulgogi bento box. The portions were big and definitely filling. One thing to know is that some dishes have both lunch and dinner portions--if you don't specify, they'll automatically give you the dinner portion. Service was friendly and the food hit the spot. I'd definitely come back the next time I'm craving Korean food!
It's been a long time since I've been here but my mom and dad came here a lot. So we came to give a try since our go to was closed on a Monday. Located within a strip mall, plenty of parking outside. Love the atmosphere inside and the smells as you enter were wonderful. They have an all you can eat, cook at the table option but I like my meals served to me and not cook it myself. The Bento box lunch special has a lot of food. It's the same meal served for dinner. The beef and spicy pork bulgogi is the best. They over cooked the chicken after tasting my sister's plate. We also got a side of Japchae which is delicious. Also got the hot pot Bibimbap. One of my favorite meals. We are definitely regular customers here
I really like this restaurant. I usually just order kimchi jjiae. But this time I decided to eat inside and have the full barbecue experience. I think they're under a new management or ownership because their prices and menu and things have changed. They're all you can eat menu is a very affordable I think it's like $27 so good! Everything was very fresh. So much food it's all you can eat lots of items to pick from. There isn't 30 something dollar option also. The restaurant is a nice size very comfortable nice scenery just all around nice restaurant definitely try it out I'll be back soon!
This place is like the old school Korean Restaurant that everyone wants to go to. Located in a rather run down plaza, you don't think much from the outside. But food and service is solid. Food comes out fast and bubbling hot. You also come across some dishes that you don't find in a lot of other places. They do a great job of balancing flavors. So please support local and don't forget about this place. They're still cranking out awesome food :)
The food was really good, everything came out fresh and flavorful. The servers were super friendly and attentive, always checking on us and making sure we had everything we needed. They changed the grill without us having to ask. Overall it was a really chill vibe, nothing too fancy but just a nice, enjoyable spot to eat.
We always have a great time at Sam Won Garden! Our go-to is the All You Can Eat Korean BBQ, and it never disappoints. The staff is so kind and attentive--they're quick to bring anything you need, and always make sure your grill is perfect. That kind of service makes such a difference, especially during a longer meal like KBBQ. What really sets Sam Won apart is the variety of appetizers and banchan (side dishes) included with the all-you-can-eat option. A lot of other KBBQ spots skip that or charge extra, but here you get the full experience from start to finish. It feels generous and authentic, and the flavors are always on point. Highly recommend for a fun night out with friends or family. Come hungry and ready to grill!
We saw on Instagram that they were now doing AYCE Korean BBQ for $27-$40 so you know we had to come try it! We've been here before and the food was great! The restaurant is small but cozy. The atmosphere is very mom and pop like and all the servers are super friendly! I never have a problem with service here! You do have to cook the meats yourself here, which we love to do! When we came this time around, it was around lunchtime. Our waitress was super sweet and explained the AYCE options. Prices start at $27 and increase depending on the package tier. All the packages come with banchan (side dishes), appetizers, and meats. If you want premium meats, then the price goes up. I think the highest premium meats tier is like $40 per person. We decided on the mid level tier at like $30+ dollars. The table was set up with tongs and scissors to cut up our meats as needed. We were then given our banchan (which had kimchi, bean sprouts, broccoli, potato salad (my fav!), etc.) changed at every refill) and also dipping sauces (sesame oil and salt, soy sauce?, and ssamjang (soybean paste and gochujang). You can also ask for lettuce wraps and also rice to go alongside your meats. For the appetizers, we decided on Korean fried chicken, cheese corn, kimchi jjigae, and japchae noodles. Korean fried chicken: 8/10 - pieces were a good size, fried to a perfect crisp, and came with a gochujang dipping sauce! The flavor was good too and we enjoyed it! Wished our main dipping sauces came with gochujang though! Most restaurants provide it on the side as a condiment. Cheese corn: 9/10 - I absolutely love cheese corn and this did not disappoint! The cheese corn was sizzling and came perfectly melted! Cheese corn usually consists of mozzarella cheese, corn, butter, and some mayonnaise on a sizzling, hot plate. If you haven't tried it yet, you definitely should! The corn cheese tasted creamy and you definitely get that cheese pull! It does get a bit heavy on the stomach if you eat more than one serving! Kimchi jjigae: 7/10 - my friend got this and she said it tasted really good! It's essentially a stew and has tofu, kimchi, pork or beef, scallions, etc. I love kimchi jjigae as it's a very comforting and hearty stew. Japchae: 8/10 - my friend got this and she enjoyed it very much. Japchae is stir fry glass noodles (made with potato starch) with veggies and beef strips. Meats: Beef brisket: 6.5/10 - it didn't have flavor at all and came frozen. We were a bit disappointed that the meat came frozen and not fresh. We had to dip it in our dipping sauces to get some flavor. Pork jowl: 7/10 - I love pork jowl (pork cheek) because it literally melts in your mouth! These were good but it was a little tough. I'm thinking it's because these were previously frozen. It didn't have much flavor unfortunately, but it tasted better than the beef brisket. Galbi (Korean short ribs): 9/10 - these were really good. The marinated meats in my opinion tasted much better! The short ribs were fragrant and had a wonderful flavor. As it was grilling, I could smell all the spices and aroma. I love they added onion as well too because the onion's flavor becomes sweet after it's grilled. The chargrilled flavor was chef's kiss! Spicy pork belly: 8/10 - I enjoyed the pork belly very much and it was marinated nicely. Dipped with the sesame oil/salt mix, it was divine. I always get pork belly at Korean BBQ restaurants and this one definitely hit the spot! Overall, a decent place for AYCE Korean BBQ, but some of the meats need a little bit more flavor. Also wished some of the meats didn't come frozen but we had a good experience here. Will definitely come try this place again!
I used to dine here many moons ago and the food was horrible. I went recently to try their new AYCE bbq under new management. I will say I was actually surprised by how authentic it was. The sides were actually, dare I say, good?! Their kimchi actually tasted fermented and was spicy as well! Their fish cake wasn't dried of the ultra cheap variety. Their steamed egg and teokbokki which accompanied the BBQ was good! They even have moksal which is the best cut of pork (in my opinion). $27.99 is a steal of a deal for this. Highly recommend checking them out. To add reference I am Korean, have been to Korea and have lived in Korea. Sure it's not 10000% "authentic" but it's seriously a HUGE improvement to what it was before. Thumbs up! Will go again!
Ok, I'll admit. I'm addicted to this place. Since coming back from my Korea trip I really needed something to scratch the itch. But I'll also comment that the food here is slightly altered to suit more of an American taste. The seating here is quite nice. They have cute booths in the back where they can let to do a traditional kbbq experience with the grill in the middle of the table. If you're not into grilling your own meat the kitchen will bring it to you on a hot plate and then you'll u can sit in the middle area that's not a booth if you're more comfortable sitting at a table. To note: if you want to grill your own meat you have to order 2 meats. They'll explain it to you. Everyone is very accommodating. The first time I was here I ordered the Al jiggar which is a codfish roe stew. It was so fragrant. I wouldnt recommend it for the uninitiated, but I'd you're more experimental with your food experiences, I love the strong seafood taste of the soup. My friend ordered the galbi, and of course it is always lovely. I love how they marinate their meats here. I came here a fortnight later and got their squid stir fry. It was sweeter than I'm used to and very saucy. Perfect for all that rice you get. This time my friend ordered the grilling meat and her boyfriend got the seafood udon. They loved their orders, so that's all I can say on that, since I couldn't finish all my food. For me the amount of food they give us approximately 2.5 meals amount wise, so it's quite a bit. Even if it's like $20+ per person, you really get what you pay for. They have kdrama playing on 1 TV near the door and kpop music videos on the one by the bar. It's really an aesthetic. It's dark in here, but it really adds to the ambience. You can tell it's truly a mom and pop shop. And I can't recommend it enough. I love it! I keep coming back!
The new version of Sam Won is just as delucious as the previous. I do miss Ms. Kim in the resaurant welcoming everyone. The inside is much more modern and clean looking. We did the AYCE BBQ. It was AMAZING. You can order a ton of different Appitizers/Sides and there are different levels of BBQ. It comes with korean bonchon (sides) that can be refilled anytime even without having the AYCE BBQ. the meat was so fresh there was a worker cutting the meat in the bar area. We ordered the kimchi pancake and the Korean fried chicken both were amazing! Check out the new Sam Won!
Sam Won has been a go to spot for me for over the past 8 + years. I've tried other Korean bbq options here and Jax, and keep coming back to my lil hole in the wall spot over here. I think what you get for what you pay is very fair, the service has always been very good, and so is my food each time I make the trip over here. Sam Won is the type of place that after you visit once or twice, you know what you are going to get each time you come in. It's reliable. Their bibimbap is my all time favorite. Normally I get it in the hot stone, but this time decided to try it in a regular bowl, and add an extra egg to it. Still just as delicious. Their homemade hot sauce they bring to the table with the bibimbap is very tasty. If you require a little extra heat, just tell your server and they will bring a much hotter version of the same sauce, to your table. I greatly appreciated that - custom! The glass noodle appetizer shown in the pics was extremely delicious. That was a new try for me and I will be ordering that again on my next visit! The spicy pork was not overly spicy. I'd classify it a mild to low end medium heat for those of you who like a little spice, but not too much.

Made a trip on Columbus day lunch. The restaurant is not in the best shape, seems old rundown building and deemed lighting doesn't really help. I asked the server for what the best or most ordered food, but she couldn't give me the direct answer. So was debating between dolsot bibimbop or seafood tofu soup. chose the latter. One of the oldie but goodie Korean restaurants in town. I've been eating at this place since the 2000's. The ownership has changed hands a few times already but the place still keeps its roots with its origin. For the best bang for your buck, the lunch menu is almost half the cost of the dinner menu. read more
Ive heard so much about this place from folks who know Korean food. So finally one day we happened to be at University Blvd. off I95 so we stopped for lunch. The restaurant is in an area clustered with many types of ethnic eateries including Thai, Greek, Mexican, Mediterranean as well as markets. I love the diversity in eating places here. There's a private parking lot that's super crowded during lunch, best come early. For under $10 you have a combo meal. Choices are chicken, beef, bulgogi, pork, vegetarian. I had the bulgogi and my friend had the grilled chicken. Both come with fried dumpling, noodles, rice & salad. Bulgogi tend to be a little sweet which was tasty to me. I tasted the grilled chicken it was also delicious. I was quite full for lunch under $10 ... sweeet deal. We did not wait long for our food. The server was very nice. I will surely return to sample more of the menu items and will have me some Kimchee too. read more

We went here last night for dinner. Bulgogi and Korean BBQ Galbi was ok. Came with sides and bowls of rice. I ordered hot tea and to my surprise it was Lipton- green tea . I wasn't too happy being charged for an extra rice with my main meal due to I received my 1st rice with the pickled sides . Server was pleasant. read more

This was our first visit to Sam Won and thoroughly enjoyed it. We ordered pan fried mando, japchae and the Korean BBQ Plate combo (beef Short ribs, spicy pork, bulgogi and seasoned beef). It got really busy but our food was fast and they were quick to refill any side dishes (banchan). The owner was very attentive to us! We plan to come back. read more

My wife and I are both Korean-American that grew up with Korean food in plenty. Ellicott City MD and Annandale VA are our hometowns. We were passing through Jacksonville FL on our way back north from visiting Clearwater FL, and the wife was craving some Korean food after a week of eating burgers and fries.... This place was damn good. In all honesty I skipped the non-Korean reviewers' reviews and was kind of disappointed that one dude said this place had old food. And was complaining about the ambience. Bruh... you better turn in your Korean card because we all know we don't give a wut about no ambience. We want damn good food that tastes like our grandmas made it, and that's what we got. Sam Won is by far one of our favorite restaurants. My husband and I have been coming here for years since he introduced me to Korean food. Our favorite meal is definitely the Dolcot Bi Bim Bop; which is a hot stone bowl of rice, vegetable and marinated steak; combined beautifully with colors, tastes and textures. Kim the owner is always so friendly, welcoming and fun. Her staff is also wonderful. We have never had a bad experience here and will always look forward to our next visit. read more
My son and his South Korean girlfriend took us here for dinner when he came home from being stationed over there. We had the BBQ chicken, bulgogi and spicy pork. The inside of the restaurant was clean and smelled great. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, especially after she realized we had a native Korean with us. This was our first time eating Korean food and we found it all delicious, including the complimentary condiments (ranging from tart to spicy). My son's girlfriend said it was all pretty much traditional, but she did say it was strangely sweet to her taste buds and she surmised that the recipes might have been altered to conform more to American tastes. I was a bit shocked at the price and the large amount of food served. It wasn't until afterwards that our friend told us that most of the dinners were portioned for 2 people, not just one. Oops. I enjoyed it enough to go again, but will be ordering smarter next time. read more

Yummmm....thats what we left saying from our first trip to try Korean BBQ. The restaurant is in a little strip mall off University def nothing special from the outside but inside it is small and comfortable ( with a Karaoke stage too) and I was pleased to see quite a few people in here when we arrived at 12:30 on a Tues. The food!!! We didnt get too crazy being first time here but we tried the lunch special of Galbi - Beef short ribs sliced thin marinated in a delish sweet sauce then grilled and Galbi and Shrimp- same as above with poor little shrimp overcooked to the death, i still ate them but they were very chewy..............the lunch special comes with: white or fried rice, salad, noodles, 2 fried dumplings.....everything was wonderful, yes and the dumplings were so good my husband ordered another order for himself! We were both full and happy and the lunch specials were around $8 and $12 so pretty reasonable for the amount and yummyness of the food Something that confused me was I didnt see any grill tables ( where you would cook the food at your own table) maybe only for dinner? But that sounds fun and I would like to try it! read more
When you want to eat Bulgogi you are extremely limited in options in this city. I think there are only two places in town. I've tried both and they both are just OK. The only difference besides location is the customer service. And both places are hit and miss. Portion sizes are huge. Location is much closer to work so it's easier to grab something on the way home. Portion sizes are too big to try to complete during lunch. And they are much slower in service. But the food quality is still pretty good. My issue here...Marinate was a little too sweet. (I'm use to the spicy savory sweetness of the meat, but this was just too much sugar not enough ginger and pepper). I've had this a couple of times and the recipes remains the same, so I'm assuming this is standard. Not bad, I've just had better. read more
There are three in Table bbq the rest are normal tables. The portions are pretty big for Korean bbq which is a bonus. The table was a little small for 6 the seats are fine just talking about table space for food on the table but for 4 would probably be a good fit. The banchan was good and they offered refills. Just remember if you at bbq table to make sure the menu says cook in kitchen or at the table. The food from the kitchen we ordered was fantastic but note most food came out at extremely varied times. We where not in a rush so it was all good. They do have oksoosoo tea you just need to ask for it. read more
I thought this place was pretty good, despite being kind of dark inside and the mall a little run down. Not major issues though. They have nice and clean bathrooms. :) Anyways the food is pretty good and the servers super nice and sweet. I've gone alone and with a large group. They were great with our large group and even gave us free dumpling appetizers and kept the banchan flowing. What made me really happy is they accommodated my wish for a stew not on their menu: ddukbaegi bulgogi, adding the glass noodles. It was absolutely perfect and tasted exactly as I love! My only complaint is that their prices are a bit high. That stew was $21. A bit steep in my opinion. I think $15-18 is more appropriate. But with few good korean bbq places in the area, I guess they can charge what they wish. I've had their saamgyupsal (pork belly) which is grilled on a portable grill at your table. Also the kalbi (short rib) which is cooked in the kitchen. It was served on a bed of onions, and my only wish was they had sautéed the onions a little more before placing the kalbi on it. They use the proper leafy lettuce leaves, making folding it up with the cooked meat more manageable. I do wish they provided veggies for the grill like sliced hot pepper, garlic, mushrooms. Don't let the outside surroundings deter you... it is good and the people working there want you to be happy! read more

Took my wife to her first Korean BBQ Resto. She loved it! The server was amazing ... as soon as she found out I grew up w/ a Korean step-mom (oma) & it was my wife's 1st time - she gave us the most awesome & attentive service!! She offered a variety of meats for the grill (buogogi, bulgogi & short-ribs). She prepared & grilled all the meats for us & made sure we knew what all the side dishes were from the various kim-chee (cucumber & cabbage). The quality of the food was top-shelf & can't wait to go back for more! read more

Came here with my Fiancè, his sister, sister's husband and their daughter, craving for some Korean! Came here a few times in past before yelping. It wasn't busy on a Monday night (which is good). We were greeted and sat around the grill table because we wanted to grill the meats ourselves. We ordered 2 LA Kalbis, Seasoned Beef, and 2 Dolsot Bibimbap and Japchae. The Japchae was pretty good. Seasoned nicely, noodles were soft, and veggies cooked well. A bit greasy, but wasn't that bad. The sides and Dolsot bibimbap came out along with the raw meat. The server placed it on the grill (which was nice of her, but we really wanted to grill it ourselves). As we start to flip it over and move it around, she came by wanting to do it for us, but we told her that it's alright, we can cook it, we got it. She insisted, but the point for us to sit at the grill is to cook the meats ourselves. We've done it plenty of times. The only thing about this grill is that it mainly cooks in the middle (because that's where the flame is at) which I do not really like because it takes longer to cook. You can only fit like maybe 3 strips to have it cooked all the way, the fire wasn't that big. Because the grill platform has spaces, it doesn't cook in its own "juice". It just falls through and basically grill it dry than moist.... So, we let it sit there a bit and of course when you let it sit there too long it burns. That is why I prefer a flat grilled platform where it can cook in its own juice to keep that moist and flavor. Overall, the meats came out okay, mostly dry and a bit flavorless. I was expecting more, but the way the grill is set-up its kind of difficult. And it seems like they didn't marinate it that well or just didn't put enough... I enjoyed the side dishes more than the meats. I wasn't really all excited anymore. It was kind of a let down. Maybe next time it can get better. Decent little hole in the wall Korean restaurant. A little sketchy looking from the outside but clean on the inside. All entree come with all you can eat sides as pictured. The chicken dish was the best out of the Galbi, bim bop, and other dish we got. Great service. read more
As I was filling out the initial check-in questionnaire for this place - I answered no for almost everything. Is this place trendy- NO. Is this place hipster? NO. If it had asked "Is this place the best Korean in the city?" I would have said YES. I have been coming here off and on for almost 15 years. They NEVER DISAPPOINT. Everything here is fantastic. Okay so the restaurant is very humble in appearance. There is no flashy ambiance but you will find bold delicious authentic flavor. I love this place ! My go to is the spicy pork - although the bibim bap and the bulgogi are fantastic choices. You really can't lose here people. Despite the humble surroundings this is the best Korean I have had in Florida. Just look at the pictures man! You won't find this level of excellence anywhere else. Not to mention, this is where allllll the Koreans eat. You should give this place place a try! read more

Good, but not great. If you are in the mood Korean, your options are limited in Jacksonville. Sam Won has been around for awhile and they are consistent in what they offer. I have been here a few times for dinner, but this is my first time during lunch. I went with my co-workers on a Friday. The place was fairly busy which is always a good sign. The menu is typical of what you would find at other Korean places. Something that took me by surprise was the serving tray that the lunch special was served on. It was a Korean fast food tray, but it reminded me of a prison food tray (not that I have ever been). I ordered the lunch special Galbi. It was served with salad with ginger dressing, fried rice, noodles, and fried dumplings. Everything tasted fine and the portion was plenty for lunch. When ordering the lunch special, the Korean side dishes are not offered (bummer). If you never been here before, or not accustomed to this side of town, you may be put off by the parking lot. FYI, metal bars on the window isn't for the decor. Dinner is a more enjoyable experience (although prices are higher). No cheap utensils, no plastic trays, and lots of Korean side dishes. Also, not having to rush back to work also helps makes it more relaxing. read more

This restaurant is a little outdated located in a strip mall. You do have an option to sit at a non-BBQ table or opt for the BBQ table which has curtains for privacy. The service was good, as we dined 2 hours prior to closing and there is a grand opening for another Korean BBQ joint about 3-5 blocks down. Prices were a little outrageous and food was mediocre. The sweet tea was the best thing on the menu. I may give the other Korean BBQ places a shot in the area since this one was sort of a bust. read more

This restaurant has a really nice vibe. Dim lights, well decorated for as a Korean Restaurant. However the food is quite mediocre. For the price you are paying you would expect it to be really on top but unfortunately, the experience was not really amazing. You would never go wrong with kbbq but I can really say this time that I've had better Korean Food elsewhere. We ordered the seafood pancake for appetizer, it had too much filler. We also got the combination bbq platter (LA Galbi, Bulgogi, Spicy Pork, Bbq Squid - squid is a little tough, and the dish were mostly bell peppers)which isn't really bad but I expected them to be on a sizzling plate, its served on regular plates. I would say that the food is just okay but what really got to me in tonight's dinner is that the servers weren't on their A-game. The sides(the most important piece in eating kbbq) came out last, and we had to ask for things that should be put on the table automatically, specially when you already asked for them the first time, you wouldn't want to repeat yourself. There were just too many pauses in the dining service that I very much would prefer not happening. Would have given 4-stars if had better experience but if you're on your 2nd season of your favorite kdrama and wanting to eat some Korean Food, you can check these guys out as they would be able to give you a kbbq experience. read more

this is the only korean place I go and stick with for a long time. I tried all korean restaurant in town but this is still the best. Tasty food and attentive server. I enjoyed the kimchee, pork, and tofu stew. The various side dishes were yummy. My favorite was the potato. Portion is on the small side for the price paid. But I did not leave the restaurant hungry. The decor is dated but the restaurant appears clean. They can benefit with better lighting as it does look a bit dingy. It was clear that they have their regular customers. The owner seems to know them well. That's a good sign. read more
I have been eating at Sam Won for more than a decade. That being said I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. The restaurant is always very clean and has many grill tables inside. You are seated quickly and can easily fit in a work lunch or can stay longer. They will not rush you out. I typically eat there for lunch and order the spicy pork box. It comes with rice (fried or steamed), dumplings, jap chae, salad, and your choice of meat (under $10). Sometimes it is spicier than others, I prefer the heat. We also added the side dishes. Which is where my disappoint comes in. In the past one of the sides featured some type of seafood, which was a highlight. On top of that, one was fried potatoes. When I eat Korean I am just not looking for simple potatoes, I want flavor. All in all I still enjoy it for lunch but I think Gang Nam is running the sides game and that makes a big difference to me. read more

Had a taste for Korean today and wanted to try another place besides our usual spot. So let me start by saying the customer service was good. Our waitress was friendly, checked on us and the food came out quickly. Now for the food...it was just okay. The menu is pretty much what I expected from eating at many Korean restaurants in the past. I figured I'd try something beside the usual bibimap w/tofu or chicken or soup. We decided on the 4 meats entree and selected chicken/shrimp for me, pork/beef for my husband. Chicken was okay, hubby said steak was really good, other meats were either too chewy or just didn't appear fresh. We also ordered the fried bbq chicken which was disappointing because it was super salty. Even the rice seemed like day old rice and just wasn't that freak light clean tasting rice I'm used to. The banchan was okay. Anyway, with all that being said, maybe today was just an off day. I came here based on the good reviews and a massage therapist I visited swears by this place...NOT a "must try" for me. We'll stick with our usual spot on San Jose. read more
