My son had the vegetable medly that looked like it came out of a food magazine. He said it also tasted like Food Network quality! For me, I went the spicy road. I picked the Jungle Fried Rice. My waiter did inform me it is very spicy. He called it a 7 out of 10 on the scale. Out of precaution, he had them bring it down to a 6. IT. WAS. AMAZING! We were just in the area and was checking out the water front and saw Sambal and decided to grab a bite to eat. We were seated quickly on the deck. The tables for 2 are very small. We would have tried more apps, but the table is not big enough. We tried the fried cauliflower. It was good. Sambal has been our date night place for the last 6 years! We have come here NUMEROUS times. The food never ever disappointed us, and we are pretty harsh food critiques. We have tried so many of their dishes, the curries, the duck, pompano, pad Thai, all the appetizers. Sometimes there is a slight change to the menu but our expectations to the food's quality are always met. The service is great and the servers are very friendly. My guy and I went on a date here and got completely swept up in the amazing food, drinks, and stunning view of the Tappan Zee Bridge, we even forgot to take pictures! The warm recessed lighting makes it a perfect, cozy date night spot. We started with the mushroom appetizer and fried calamari, both were incredible. The spicy drunken noodles with shrimp were packed with flavor, and you can adjust the spice level to your preference. Their lychee martini made with house liquor was fire! My husband and I stopped by for dinner after touring houses nearby. The restaurant is located near water which if it wasn't so cold this night it would have been pretty to sit outside. Inside was nicely decorated. When we walked in they led us upstairs which is the main dining area. We got menus and ordered the massaman curry. I got the duck and my husband got the beef. My husband also got a Thai iced tea. The tea was refreshing and not too sweet. The curries were ok. The flavors were good but the duck was dry and overly chewy. My husband said his curry was only ok. Later for dessert I noticed a pumpkin custard on the menu. I love anything pumpkin so I had to try it. They were very busy that evening and told us it would take awhile. Since we had no place to get to in a hurry we said sure we'll wait. It took almost half an hour before it came. They did warn us. It was very good luckily. The pumpkin does not have the same flavors as American pumpkin pie. It was puréed pumpkin sitting on top of sticky rice drenched in coconut milk. I liked it a lot. Not very sweet, the pumpkin was soft and slightly salty. The sticky rice is soft and full of coconut flavor. Overall not bad. read more

Great location along the Hudson River in Irving. I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time. Finally, my friend, Isabella and I decided to go there on a Saturday evening. The location is great along the Hudson river with a scenic sunset view. We requested seating outside, which was nice. However, the tables and chairs can be more comfortable. I decided to try something that I have never had before so I ordered a sambal chicken dish. The waiter described it as a platter of food but I was underwhelmed by the presentation when the dish was served. Interestingly, the dish has four proteins: chicken, fish, egg, and peanuts. It comes with a dipping sauce and a scope of sticky rice but no vegetables. The chicken looked a little dry and the sardines were plain but it tasted alright. Isabella ordered a Thai curry dish. It wasn't serve hot enough, the waiter took it and heat it up a bit. The wait staff were nice and friendly. Food is decent, if a little skimpy for the price. This review is mostly about the service, but I don't think the food really was great enough to tip the balance here. Service was indifferent. One dish we ordered simply failed to appear. The waiter took his time trying to find out about it (after we asked about it), and then nonchalantly informed us that the kitchen said they were out of it. Zero apology, didn't seem to give a crap either way. I wouldn't be too put out if something was unavailable, but I would expect to be notified about it right away without having to ask and then wait around for an answer, and I would certainly expect at least some level of apology for blowing us off. Oh, and we had to wait quite a while for the waiter to manage to bring the check. Needless to say, I bumped the percentage tip down a bit after all this because it was clearly in the server's court. We shared the cauliflower Manchurian and roti canai for appetizers, and really liked both of them. I had the pompano, which was a whole fish. Messy to eat, but delicious! We sat outside on the deck. The tables are packed in and it's pretty uncomfortable. There isn't a lot of room for people to walk through, and I felt like someone was constantly bumping into the back of my chair. The inside of the restaurant looks a bit gaudy. Service was slow and the servers weren't particularly attentive. Ordered pickup, first time there. The order was placed with a specific time that was acknowledged by the restaurant. There was plenty of advance notice. I got there a few minutes early. The order was not ready but the hostess went into the kitchen to check and told me just a couple of minutes. Well, by the time my order came out, it was 25 minutes late. I was not the only one waiting either and not the only one getting annoyed. The food though was good to fair. The pompano fish was good. The crab fried rice was good. The pork belly with Chinese broccoli not so good. The pork belly which is fatty by itself was not cooked so that the skin was crispy and the fat somewhat rendered. It sat in liquid so that the skin was rubbery and inedible and there was more soft fat than actual meat. Not something to order again. The layout of the place is unappealing and uninviting. When you come in, you see nothing. The hostess is sitting at a desk behind a wall. You won't see her untill you come in 10 feet and look around the wall. The first floor contains only the kitchen. The dining room is upstairs and you and the servers both have to use it at the same time. I did not see an elevator so if you can't do the stairs, you are out of luck. When a party comes in and needs to be seated, the hostess has to bring them upstairs leaving the hidden hostess stand unmanned. People arrived and there is nobody there to greet them. Oh and by the way, the prices are high, too high. The 3 dishes I ordered was over $100. Definitely not worth it. read more

Had a birthday party for my husband here and it went great, they brought cake I brought in when requested, paid close attention to the water for the table and providing the bill & to go boxes in a timely matter and the food was great! Only thing to note is there is a flight up to table so if you have any elderly people with knee pain they may find that a little taxing but besides place is great for small parties and the attention was good. Food may take some time since its prepared on the spot but you have all the time to talk in large groups prior to be interrupted by food. Short staffed but they do fine. read more

This would be an amazing spot in the warmer weather to sit on their outside deck overlooking the Hudson. Staff was super friendly and my food was absolutely delicious. Randomly found this spot and we were super happy we did. Cute outdoor dining area and a nice and cozy indoor dining room. We ate delicious Malaysian dish and the pad Thai. I have been to the other restaurants in this parking lot (Red Hat, MP Taverna) many times, but never stepped into Sambal until last night. I wanted to make a 7pm reservation on OpenTable, but they only had 6:45 and 7:15, so I opted for 6:45. Upon arrival, my dad and I were the only ones there - for the entire night! I thought it strange that I wasn't able to make a 7pm reservation (it's really not a big deal at all, but found it odd). We had the entire restaurant to ourselves. Service was wonderful - our waiter was super attentive, answered our questions about the menu, gave suggestions, etc. For appetizers we had the cauliflower, which was lightly fried/crispy and had a tangy basil sauce. We also ordered the steamed pork momo (dumplings), which came with a brown-similar-to-soy sauce, and a red chili sauce that was AWESOME. For my main dish, I ordered the green curry, with added shrimp. It had eggplant, bell peppers, and tomatoes in a coconut curry with just the right amount of heat for me. Attentive service with authentically flavorful dishes. Loved that they had a few Indian Chinese - like Manchurian on the menu as well. The ambiance of this place is 10/10! It sorts right on the water and has such nice mood lighting inside. The servcie is impeccable, the staff wants to make you as happy as possible. This place has a nice water view. There's a huge parking lot but it's advised to come earlier than your reservation as the lot can fill up quick. We had a 6:30pm reservation for dinner. We were seated outside in the back corner. Service was reasonable, but I tell everyone ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GLASS RIMS. No matter where you are! 3 of 4 of our glasses had lip stains on them. Which leads my to my point of inquiry: if it's a first come-first serve patio...why were we being rushed to gtfo? And where was "there"? The stairs? The bar? Or lowkey "gtfo"?
