We went here for dinner after having a great outdoor experience at Red Hat on the river, which is right next door. It was the 3 of us and we were in a mood for some Indo-Chinese food and the vibe from Sambal tricked us into this place. We went here at 9:15 pm on Sat (the place closes at 10) and it was relatively empty, so we got outdoor seating on a warm summer Saturday night. Social distancing isn't really in effect in their seating and tables are placed fairly close to each other. We ordered 2 cocktails @ $14 each - Bangkok Mule and Lychee Martini. Both were just ok. For food, we got Cauliflower Manchurian ($10.95), Thai Grand Chicken Chilli Basil ($18.95), Lamb Biang Biang Noodles ($17.95), and Jackfruit and Potato Curry ($17.95). Food overall is actually pretty decent, although slightly expensive with a price to portion ratio mismatch. The 'Jackfruit and Potato Curry' is a must-have for vegetarians! Another restaurant on the Hudson relying on ambiance and view. I am not going to list all the reasons(there are many) for you to avoid this place but will attempt to sum it up in a few sentences. It's bad management. It's simply not a correctly run establishment and considering the price point it should be. It's a nice atmosphere with a group or a date if you sit on the patio and enjoy the river-view. Don't go for the food, drinks or the service. It's mediocre at best. Identity Crisis The location formerly housed an Indian restaurant and seemed to still be under the same management. Despite efforts to add some Thai decorations the space is still looking like a predominantly Indian place & Indian songs adds to ambiance. Larb chicken salad was under flavored, lacking the spices and spiciness normally one would find at an authentic Thai restaurant. There are only two or three Malaysian inspired dishes I can see on an somewhat limited menu. The fish dish was a bit salty and the drunken noodle is the only dish that seems passable as a modern Thai. Let's start with ambiance. If you snag a seat outside you will be treated to a gorgeous view of the shimmering river, high rocks of the Palisades and the golden sunset ( available 4-8 pm -). And that makes everything else - food and service - seem better. Food is inconsistent. Some is delicious, some is bland and some is puzzling. But on average it's really nothing special. I don't understand why Pad Thai and some other noodle dishes are served with ingredients on the side and not mixed in. How is one supposed to mix it on a flat plate with a fork. (There were no accompanying instructions provided). I would stick to appetizers, they seem to taste better. Drinks are generally good and tasty. Service. Sigh. The waiters are very friendly and when they get to you, they are attentive. But there are so few of them, and they are so rushed I felt guilty asking for water or anything else. Very UNFRIENDLY, DISHONEST experience. Went for lunch for the first time. I made a reservation, and was pointed outside to pick a table. I saw a table in the sun, and sat. The table was very dirty, and obviously left dirty from the night before. The waiter had to clean it. We were the first ones there. When he gave us the menus. He omitted giving us the restaurant week menu. (Meanwhile, there's a sign on the door featuring that they participate in restaurant week!) When I asked for it, he pointed to the menu that I had. I told him there was no restaurant week menu on there. He pretended that I had the correct menu and that it was there and that I was overlooking it. When I pushed back,He begrudgingly went inside and got us one. Hmm... I ordered the three-course meal off the restaurant week menu, with coconut soup, basil chicken, and mango mousse. My friend ordered off the regular menu, and got pad Thai. I also ordered a mango Mojito, and my girlfriend ordered the California Pinot noir which she pointed to on the menu for $9.(The first one listed) The drinks were good, and my soup was really good. My basil chicken was ok, it needed some type of flavor. Very bland. My girlfriend did not like her pad Thai, said it was very dry. A large table arrived after we were seated, and we werent able to get the waiters attention. (there were only four tables seated.) My friend flagged him down and ordered another wine. Instead of going inside and getting a glass of wine, he went to the table of 10 and started taking their food orders and drink orders. So, we had to wait 10 plus minutes for the wine. We were nonexistent once the larger table arrived! It was very obvious. Nobody ever cleared the plates, so my dessert arrived and the pad Thai was on the table along with empty wineglasses an empty Mojito glass and other plates. A big mess. We ended up stacking dishes on top of dishes. My friend wanted to order another glass of wine, but our waiter was not to be found. I'm pretty sure our waiter was the bartender. We flagged down another waiter, and told him she wanted a glass of the California Pinot noir. This waiter brought it very quickly. Now, it was time to leave. We flagged the waiter down for the check. Her wine bill was $45 for 3 glasses. We were charged for The Rodney Strong Pinot Noir for $15 a glass, not the California Pinot noir that she had ordered and pointed to on the menu. It should've been $27, So, we flagged the waiter again. My friend said, I ordered the California red, not this. The waiter didn't say a word, looked mad, took the bill went inside and changed it. If it was truly a mistake, it would have been handled differently. When he came back he just stared at us. He said nothing put the bill on the table and just stared with a nasty look on his face. It was very awkward. We paid it and went inside. He was standing there. There was no apology, no words exchanged. If looks could kill! He looked really pissed. I definitely feel there's some dishonesty going on at this restaurant. I don't believe it was an accident that he over charged, just like I don't believe it was an accident that he didn't give us the restaurant week menu. He was trying desperately to overcharge us. His face and actions said it all. There was no "thank you ", "come again "or "sorry about that " when we left. No words. Very cold! Very dishonest. I won't be going back there. read more

I found out about this spot after working in Irvington and I am so happy I did! Not only are the views of the Hudson River breathtaking and the staff helpful... but the food is AMAZING! Hands down one of the best restaurants in Lower Hudson Valley. This is my first review for them because, usually I go during my lunch break and only have an hour to order and eat. This time I took my boyfriend and my parents and brother for an early Father's Day this Saturday and everyone had an amazing time! I ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees that I know my family would love and shared amongst the table. Curry puffs I had to order twice because we were fighting over them and the Roti just melts in your mouth! I am not going to go through every item we orders because this review would be about 30pages long, but I urge you to look at my accompanying photos and see these amazing dishes and drinks! We had a wonderful dinner at Sambal. The atmosphere is quite nice. Despite what some other reviewers experienced, we had impeccable service. Plenty of parking. Crispy Spring Rolls and Thai Ground Chicken with Chilies And Basil were excellent. Spicy Guava Martini was tasty and spicy and the Lychee Martini was delicious. Looking to explore the diff restaurant scenes in the River towns of westchester. This spot has a nice outdoor deck with lots of umbrellas to protect you from the sun. Staff is friendly and attentive. We came around 2pm on a weekday, so it was pretty quiet. The food itself is what you find at most Thai places, with some malay dishes in the mix. Prices are high, relative to the small portions they serve. The food is ok, but not something i would come back to at that price point. The dishes are mostly sauce, with no distinct flavor. Chicken Satay was rubbery and the peanut sauce didnt taste great, papaya salad was not memorable. Had some good Thai food the other day with my boyfriend in Irvington! If you sit by the window, you'll have a view of the river. For drinks, we started off with the Basil Gin Smash and the Lychee Martini. Both were great and definitely strong. We got the Chili Chicken Basil as an appetizer which was boneless chicken thighs in a delicious chili, sambal and ginger sauce. For our entrees we tried the Shrimp Pad Thai, the Penang Curry, and the Sesame Chicken. My favorites were the Pad Thai and the Sesame Chicken. My boyfriend really loved the Chili Chicken and the curry! For dessert we had the panna cotta. We had a great time and can't wait to go back for some more Thai food! Wow! This place is absolutely delicious! It was my first time trying Thai/Malaysian food and I am in love! The apps are delicious, especially the papaya salad and the cauliflower. As for the main dish, Pad See Ew and the Massaman are definitely one to try! They are veggie base but you can add your protein. Food **** Service ** Dinner started off well enough at 6:15 pm on a Thursday night when a friend and I met at Sambal to catch up. Our waiter seemed fine and took our order. We explained we would be ordering off the Hudson Valley "restaurant week" menu. This is when I started to feel that I was in an episode of Fawlty Towers. The waiter actually pointed to the menu and the price and asked "you do realize this is the price?". This seemed odd but we just said "yes" and assumed he had had a problem with a different customer who thought it was the lunch price. We ordered and in short course yummy appetizers appeared with our drinks. It was about that time that we left Fawlty Towers and entered some sort of episode of the Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Twilight Zone. Appetizers were eaten happily and were done. Then we sat behind empty dirty dishes for a very long time until, finally, entrees arrived. Only the appetizer serving dishes were removed. Entrees were to be eaten on the previous course's small plates including the leftover sauces. Alright then, we chatted our way through the expectedly delicious entrees (without serving spoons, but what is that between good friends) and sat back. Again, an f inordinate amount of time just sitting and waiting in front of empty bowls and plates, cutlery arranged to the left of the plate to signal "finished", and no staff coming by. Note: there were three parties of two; one party of one, and one party of six in the entire restaurant at the busiest time we were there. That is the size of a weekend family dinner with grandparents and aunts and uncles and teens at my house. I am able to take care of a party of thirteen as a home cook and serve and bus three courses with beverages just fine on my own. But I digress. Finally we were able to catch caught the server's eye. He came over and said "do you want dessert" in a way that implied that we shouldn't. Restaurant week menu was gone and he pointed toward the dessert area on the regular menu that he sort of dangled in front us. We said something like "yes we ordered from the restaurant week menu so we will take one mango mousse and one coconut panna cotta". He said "no panna cotta tonight"and just looked at us. Okay, we were game so we asked "what dessert do you recommend then" and, he said " chocolate cake". We said " fine that seems like a great idea. One mousse and one cake please". And off he went. The dirty plates were still on the table but when a server finally came by to clear, I dropped my napkin. The server graciously asked "do you want a fresh napkin". As I said "no that's fine", reaching out my hand for the napkin...::.he just walked away with the napkin entirely. Luckily I'm a neat eater. The desserts came out. They were served on their own plates with the right number of spoons. The mango mousse was as expected and the cake was stale. My colleague disagreed and says the cake was merely dry, so I let her eat cake:) Noone inquired as to whether we would like coffee or tea. We did ask and when tea was served no receptacle for the used tea bag was supplied. Dessert and tea done......another long wait. Finally we got the attention of the server who was having an excellent time being fully immersed in his chat with an employee who was behind the bar. I have never been so happy to get a check and pay and....stand up..and walk away. There are leisurely multi-course meals that should take almost three hours but this wasn't what a Thursday night restaurant week three-courser should be. Throughout the entire meal, aside from the long delays in clearing the table, there was not offer to refill our water carafe, no questions as to whether we would like another beverage, more rice, or tea, no evinced interest in what we thought of the food served to us, no thanks and no farewells. Look, we will be back anyway. This is a reliable rivertowns restaurant with wonderful food (the stale cake was just a weird one-off) that I certainly could never prepare as well at home, beautiful views, and a very attractive and comfortable dining area. But the question remains ----what has happened to the service? It wasn't rude, but it was non-existent. read more

This is my second time here. A busy Friday night in the middle of COVID-19, with only outdoor dining and 50% indoor. The restaurant had 3 call outs and even with all the limitations, they were still rocking it. I'm so grateful for restaurants that have been able to keep their doors open and are helping us to feel a little normal again. They provided us with an outdoor table with a beautiful Hudson River feel experience and wonderful meal. During dinner, the manager came to apologize for the wait and we were so grateful for her kindness. Our server was great and dinner came out fast. For a restaurant with 3 call outs and all the other things they have to do to stay open they did great. We enjoyed a nice dinner, wine and a lovely couple next to us that made the restaurant experience even more special. Came here with some work colleagues on a Tuesday for lunch. They weren't very busy but there were about three tables being served including mine. We ordered our soups and entrees--pad thai, pad see ew crab fried rice and a salad. Nothing was out of the ordinary until we waited for over 25 mins for the soups and they forgot someone's soup. My colleague ended up waiting a little longer than I would have to speak up but when she did, the server told her she hadn't ordered it (she did, I was there). When it finally came, along with the rest of the food (another 25 mins later), I was a little disappointed in the taste. It seemed very basic. The kicker to this entire experience is that when we went to pay, the server said their credit card machine was down due to bad wifi. So instead, we advised he would be taking a photo of the credit card in order to charge it later. This is a huge red flag. I told him that wouldn't be happening. After a colleague walked with him, the wifi started working all of a sudden and was able to charge the credit card. Very sketchy. Sambal is located in a great location, overlooking the Hudson River. My co-workers and I came here for lunch a little while ago and all of us ordered something off of their lunch special. I went with the Pad See Ew lunch special. It was done perfectly, with a bit of sweetness on top of the typical savoriness that comes with Thai food. The portions were very modest, but that is to be expected when ordering off of a lunch special. It was completely empty when we arrived, but there was a photographer taking photos of Sambal's menu items.
