When visiting new food spots, I usually ask people what I should order, but when my brain isn't braining, I'll forget. I once accidentally went to what turned out to be the best soup dumpling place in New York and nearly ordered some plate of squid nonsense. Luckily, a pair of suited guys next to me were like no, brah, you need the soup dumplings. They even made me eat one of theirs so I would know of the awesome. At Sammich, I was assured that while the Tre with its various salumi is a great sandwich, their in-house action--cured pastrami, roasted meats, and poached tuna--is where it's really at. I assented to leave the Tre unsampled and ordered the pastrami on rye. My wife got a tuna fish salad. OmnomnomMG. The bit of smoke on the pastrami is perfect. The tuna salad was light and flavorful, putting the canned stuff to shame. There was maybe a pickle? We got a cookie? I don't know. My entire recollection of the meal was that smoky, salty awesomeness set off nicely by the Russian dressing and rye. If they'd have grilled the bread, I'd hack Yelp to somehow add a sixth star to the rating. Quality of food and customer service has both gone way downhill since Melissa left for Portland. Have been going here since they opened and can no longer stomach the exorbitant prices for what you get in return. Sad to see one of Ashland's better new restaurants go so downhill. I'm betting that the increased exposure from Guy Fieri's recent visit will only serve to increase demand and further dilute any remaining shred of quality. read more

An average sandwich. I got a cubano here while traveling through Ashland. Every sandwich comes with a side of potato chips unless you want to pay extra to swap it with something else. For a cubano and chips I think it was 10.95 (most sandwiches are around this price +/- a few dollars). The sandwich was great the first half through, but after that the never subsiding saltiness of the sandwich and potato chips became a bit much. The service was average. A woman took our order up front, but was really excited to be done with us and socialize with her active-wear wearing friends sitting in the restaurant. Stopped in from the glowing reviews and was a little disappointed. Staff was friendly and the place was very clean with nice outdoor covered seating. I was shocked to see the pastrami sandwich was $12. Most items were $10+. The pastrami was thick and tasty but there was only a few pieces of meat. 2/3 of the sandwich was the slaw and the runny sauce. The rye bread was the opposite of what I like in a good rye. It needs to be the dark stuff or it isn't a good rye. The pickle wasn't great. Only a small slice and kind of flaccid. Needs more snap. Why not a full pickle? For $13 I would think it is worth putting a while pickle on the plate. I didn't finish the last bites because they were soggy from the sauce. I love this place, and am working my way through the menu, enjoying everything I eat here. It is pricey, but so very worth the $. I am usually happy with 1/2 sammich, but enjoy a whole one when I can. Their GF focaccia is really tasty, and they are most willing to make a sammich "your way". I have never liked pastrami, until I tried Chandra's version. Wow! Let them know if you're taking yours to go, so they can suggest how to make it last the trip. I got the grilled cheese, which comes with a small tomato soup - it was very reminiscent of tomato sauce, but made a nice dip for the sandwich, which was excellent. $14 for a tuna sammich? Yes - but believe me when I tell you it was worth every penny. No canned crap here - they poach their albacore, then blend it with a beautifully balanced mayo dressing and - as if it wasn't velvety-unctuous enough - add slices of creamy, perfectly ripe avocado. Sprouts bring a nice contrasting crunch, and the soft bun it's served on cuddles the filling so it doesn't squish out when you bite into it (a problem with soft salads such as egg-mayo and tuna). Hearty crisps round out the plate, and there's beer in the fridge. Outdoor 'picnic' area is a nice touch. The Albacore tuna is clearly my favourite, but they actually kind of specialize in house-smoked meats, particularly the pastrami which seems to sell out every day. Other veg options include the grilled cheese (3 cheeses), and a mediterranean wrap with roasted melanzanie - really good stuff. Give this place a try - you won't be disappointed. read more

Stopped here on a road-trip heading south on i5, based on other Yelp reviews. With a group of 6, we ordered a wide variety of sandwiches from the hammich to the pastrami and their veggie options. Everyone was really happy with their choices. My friend, who is a northwest foodie, said the top sirloin was the best sandwich he ever had. That means a lot, when most food gets a rating of average at best. I appreciated that most of their sauces and sides are house made. I asked for some hot sauce for the sandwich I ordered and the girl working the counter asked what kind of sandwich I had and then gave me the option she thought would be best for that sandwich. Hands down the best sandwich I've ever had! It was my first visit and right from the get go we were greeted warmly & enthusiastically and asked if we've visited before. I had not, so the young lady behind the counter walked over to the wall menu and started pointing out some of their specialties. She recommended the Rueben, which she said they are know for, and I went for it. OutSTANDING sandwiches. My dad brother and I stumbled upon Sammich on a drive from SF to Portland. The pastrami was hands down the best in have ever had zero hyperbole. My brother loved loved the Chicago beef ('i never would have ordered the american cheese but it was Perfect' he said) and my dad's turkey, the option w/o cranberry looked so good. Good food but terrible service. The woman who took our order at lunch today was arrogant, snotty and generally unhelpful. I asked about the Pastrami Zombie, and she asked why do I need to ask, just order it because we work hard on making it. We ordered it to go and said we would sit outside. But our lunch sat on the counter even as she walked by us. I sought her attention but she just walked faster. Really cool vibe and nice folks, but woooah was my reuben salty. I'm not super picky, but I couldn't even finish half the sandwich. The meat was just bad. I picked up the order to go and didn't feel like driving another 20 minutes to return the food. There was also hardly any dressing on the sandwich. Ive eaten here a few times and its been delicious. This time was underwhelming. I got the tuna. It was poorly put together I had to reconstruct my sandwich. Also, it was very bland. No seasonings at all. The bun was not toasted or anything so my sandwich got soggy so fast. The tuna meat itself was high quality so that's good I guess. Best sandwich cafe ever! I havent had anything there that I didnt really like! I have probably had 6 different things off the menu and would order everyone of them again. This is the gourmet of sandwiches. I grew up in the Bay Area and travel regularly around the planet. I have probably eaten at few dozen different sandwich places in my life. I now live in the area and can say its the best by far in the valley... WELL... as far as I know: the best on the West Coast. I think any NYC deli aficionado would probably agree that this is VERY good. And in my family, it would be very hard to convince them that a good pastrami on rye could be found anywhere outside NY. My family loved this place. When my foodie buddy comes from the Bay Area, he wants to eat every lunch/dinner there. The staff (including the owner from Chicago) can be a little rough with the customers (like intense city banter) but its all good when you realize that the food comes from the heart. (IE: If you were to order a pastrami on whole wheat, you might be asked "why you want to f***ing ruin a good sandwich?" of course its in jest.. but it can catch you off guard if you are having a rough day.
