On such a beautiful day (first day of spring) in Louisiana, we just had to find somewhere with patio seating. I ordered 5 lbs of crawfish (my family was shocked that I ordered so much, challenge = accepted) they had a boiled shrimp plate and shrimp remoulade salad. the crawfish were PERFECT, and the service was really great. the boiled shrimp were huuuuuuge but a little over cooked. now, I ordered a margarita and my cousin ordered a Bloody Mary. I took one sip of the margarita and had to be that jerk that sent it back. it's basically neon citric acid and sugar. disgusting. the waitress even said people send their margaritas back more often than not. the Bloody Mary was a disappointment as well. however, this isn't a place you go for drinks, you go for some damn good crawfish on a pretty patio with family and friends. The worst customer service! We entered Sammy's & it was a zoo. The hostess asked if I was there for a pick-up. I told her, "No, we need a table for 3." She pointed in a general direction, said, "Over there," and walked away. There was a gaggle of young ladies at the end of the counter who looked like they worked for Sammy's, but when I approached them, they went away into the dining room. I don't need to eat at Sammy's. There are plenty of friendly restaurants who will gladly greet me, seat me, & serve good food in Baton Rouge. Go elsewhere. read more

Ok, maybe 2.5 if I were to add a half a star for having a nice selection of Abita brews. When we showed up here Friday night, we were told that it would be a 45 minute wait. Now... I'll admit I'm not sure, but they just seemed to be trying to separate the wheat from the chaff here and see who was REALLY bent on eating here, since the buzzer made it's obnoxious buzzing about 25 minutes into our wait. One thing to note is that the wait is outside, so if the weather is too hot or too cold, factor this into your timing. I had my second platter of mud bugs here since I had enjoyed the three pounds set before me so much the night before. Now, two platters (dang, was it really six pounds) of mud bugs doesn't make me an expert, but these were not as good as the previous batch. For starters, they were cold and the corn was overcooked. But it was the cold, really lukewarm at best, entree that didn't do it for me. The batch here seemed to be smaller, but maybe my eyes were deceiving me. Better half ordered the butterflied shrimp, and when asked, said he would like fries for his side. Now, neither of us realized that this would be not only the fries on the plate, but a second massive plate of fries. Yeah, I know, we ain't from around here. Shrimp were good, but served in an arterial hardening butter sauce. Be forewarned of parking here. If you're coming at peak time like we did, be prepared to stalk people to their cars. Fortunately people here are much more patient with folks making 12 point turns, so it all works out in the end. read more

This is the first restaurant I went to when I started LSU. Recommended by another local, I couldn't think of a better restaurant to tell newcomers of the area to go to. Lines can be long though, so you should get there early and put your name on the list. The restaurant is actually much bigger than it seems from the outside, with a large dining room, side dining room, and bar area; so the restaurant when it is full, there are a large number of people there. This was my first "Louisiana Style" experience actually IN LOUISIANA so I had some high expectations - Sammy's did not disappoint! I ordered 3lbs and honestly if I had all night, I would've ordered another 3lbs.. and then another 3lbs.. This is one of the best meals I have had in Louisiana. I was hesitant but agreed to try the alligator appetizer- which was perfectly seasoned creole style. The seasoning in combination with the remoulade dipping sauce made a believer out of me and I am now willing to eat alligator every time I return to Sammy's. As for the entree, the popular dish at the table was the crawfish! While it did look delicious, I wasn't willing to be that adventurous in one day. I opted for the chicken Palermo which was perfectly grilled chicken over pasta with spinach, mozzarella, grilled tomatoes, and marinara sauce. The sauce was savory and well seasoned; I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this dish. Re: Visit 12/31/2010. Family w/ 4 adults and 2 young children. Nice atmosphere. A few TVs for watching sports. Appetizer: Blackened alligator was nice and spicy and came with a dipping sauce. Had never had alligator before so did not know what it was going to be like but I liked it. And the sauce was nice and spicy as well. I do not know what was in it. SO got the crawfish chardonnay which came with a house salad (got the house vinaigrette which was great - flavorful and spicy) and choice of potato and garlic bread. Fries were nice and crunchy. Crawfish was nicely cooked and could taste the chardonnay. I got the New Year's Eve special: black-eyed peas, cabbage and cornbread, with a margarita daiquiri. Daiquiri was okay. Black-eyed peas were yum but cabbage was the best - made with ham and very flavorful. Cornbread was sad - dry and not much flavor but made moist by the beans. Brother got the tiger salad w/ shrimp and crawfish which was covered in shredded cheese - he devoured it. Sister-in-law got the grilled shrimp po-boy - I tried a shrimp and it was succulent and tasty. We were so stuffed we passed on the desserts - the only one that slightly appealed to us was the blueberry bread pudding which did not really appeal to us (if it had, even though bellies were full, we would have gotten it) so we left. Overall, nice atmosphere, waitress was attentive but not annoying, and food was very filling and flavorful. Whenever I am in the mood for fried seafood in Baton Rouge, Sammy's is my go to. Their fried seafood is always very crispy and tasteful, and you can tell that food quality is very important to them. I often get the seafood platter, but sometimes I will come and get their crawfish, which is delightful with the perfect amount of spice. I was so disappointed in Sammy's tonight. Today was my birthday. So I went to celebrate with my mom and my sister. It was busy, but not where the place was packed. We were seated in the back and the waitress came over and took our drink orders. It took awhile for her to come back to take our orders. She had no clue what she was doing. She did apologize and tell us she was on her last day of training. But nobody was even helping her. Why would you put someone who is training, alone during the busy shift. I ordered red beans and rice with cheese fries as an appetizer. My mom orders catfish. The waitress writes down catfish acadiana. I tell her no, just the regular. I had to show her on the menu there was a difference. Mom wanted a ceaser salad with it. My sister gets the grilled fish and tried to get the salad as well, but the waitress said it didn't come with one. Well she walks off. She comes back to say it did come with a salad. Then comes back again to ask if mom wanted the lunch or dinner portion of fish. So meanwhile the table next to us has 10 people that came in after us and had already received their appitizers. The salads come out and they weren't what we ordered. We don't even know what kind they were. But my fries hadn't come out. So I keep waiting. Then the food comes out. My red beans were good at least. So I tell the waitress I still haven't gotten my appetizer. She apologizes and goes off to see. At this point our waitress had disappeared and another girl was coming to our table. Both my drink and my sister's were empty but she only brought my sister a refill. I had to ask for one. She told me the waitress didn't put the fries order in and apologized that she was training and didn't know. Ok again, why wasn't someone helping her? She was a nice waitress, she just needed more training. So we finish our food and finally the fries come out. 55 minutes after I had ordered them. At this point I'm full and ready to go. So we just box them and ask for the check. It's really bad to spend 66 dollars on a dinner that was suppose to be fun, but ended up being a disaster. The bun was good and could have been toasted just a little more (maybe it's just me) and it was not cut all the way through like some places do, the sandwich here held together the way it should to keep the goodies inside the bun. The Crab Bisque and Crawfish Etouffee was great. The Fried Alligator was perfectly cooked and served with 2 sauces. I've eaten as Sammy's many times and have never had a bad experience, but it also never been an overly impressive experience. It's always been nice and I enjoy eating there. Last night my husband and I had dinner with some friends, my friend and I ordered crawfish. The waitress kept us up to date, saying they ran out but are boiling. After a little longer wait the manager Ron came to explain it was going to be longer than expected. He was very nice and very apologetic. At that point my friend and I weren't just ready to go and our husbands were almost done with our food. Ron came back, apologized again offered us dessert which we honestly did not want and then said he would give us gift cards. I used to be waitress. I understand that things happen out of their control but this manager definitely been above and beyond and I will be coming back to Sammy's many times because of this experience.
