I was impressed with the service, ambiance, and spectacular food. I didn't have a bad dish. Also dined for happy hour for food and drinks. I was just hungry for sushi but didn't see it in under updated menu. Still worth it. I mostly ordered small bites and it's affordable. I didn't try any entrees but I'm sure they're spectacular. When I visit Philly again, this will have to be my number one eatery. It's elevated casual aesthetic. Wide range of interior/exterior seating. Perfect for dates, casual, and foodies. I highly recommend sampan. Also shout out to my server for the suggestions and welcoming demeanor.
My sister recommended this pan-Asian restaurant. We made reservations for dinner and were promptly taken to our table. The restaurant serves modern Asian small plates meant for sharing. We ordered the crispy chicken bao buns, crispy shrimp, general tso soup dumplings, wagyu beef, Korean bbq beef, and hamachi ceviche. We were a group of 3 so one thing that was nice was that our waiter added 1 additional skewer/bao bun for the meals instead of ordering 2 plates of them. Out of all the food we ordered the most delicious were the meats; the wagyu and Korean bbq beef. They were so tender and lightly seasoned because the beef quality itself was good. The Wagyu beef was paired with an apricot dip that was really good. The chilli crisp chicken bao was also good but didn't have much sauce, so it was on the dry side. It was supposed to have chilli so we expected it to be spicy but it was not. We all really liked the crispy shrimp--it was truly crispy. The sauce and the radish paired really nicely with the shrimp as well. The one meal we did not enjoy were the soup dumplings. When we got them they were dripping of raw dough and had no soup in them. The waiter was kind enough to replace them but we still didn't really enjoy them. I did not try the hamachi ceviche because I'm pregnant but it was also a favorite from the group. For dessert we had the mini ice cream cones. The waiter again added an extra one for us. The flavors were chocolate banana and mango. They were good, small bites. One of them melted so quickly and fell on the table and the waiter was really kind and got us a replacement. I did use the bathroom and absolutely hated it. It was unbelievably dark in there and there were weird sounds playing in there. I went in there to make sure I didn't have food in my teeth but couldn't even see. Super inaccessible, hopefully that's something that can be changed. The service overall was clearly excellent! I would recommend this place, especially if you come for the meats. It was surprisingly filling too.
So busy on a Saturday night. We got there 15 minutes early for our reservation and had to wait to be seated for the people who were running late for their reservations. I did enough watching the food prep and seeing all the amazing dishes go by, so not a total loss . We decided on the chef tasting special. You get to pick a total of 7 dishes and given the ice cream cones with the flavors of the day. We started off with the general two soup dumplings. They were a little gummy and flavor was just fair. The pork bao bun was amazing! Crispy full of flavor and the bun was little, soft but held together. I could have eat dozen more of these they were that fabulous. The crab tacos were crispy and packed with crab meat but I felt the crab was a little watery and texture. The beef sticks were cooked perfectly and I added just a touch of hot sauce from the table and it took the flavor to another level. The duck came next and it was delicious - crispy crunchy skin with scallion and cucumbers which added another layer with the hoisin sauce and buns. The Brussels sprouts were out of this world. You have to try them to fully understand what I mean. The branzino fish was also very good. The small ice cream cones were a great touch to end the meal. The chocolate caramel flavor one was my favorite of the two. Serves was excellent - water glass was always filled. It's a shame that they have to ask for a credit card prior to ordering - guessing they have experienced too many people leaving without paying, unbelievable what people will do or try and get away with.
Went for happy hour during the summer and luckily got a table pretty quickly! This place usually has a line to get in so having the extra tables during the summer really helped. We loved that they opened up the tables outdoors on the street, very cool to see people walking by on a nice summer day. The food was so tasty! As a vegetarian, I got the tofu tacos and the edamame dumplings from their happy hour menu. I do wish they had more vegetarian options (or options that could be made vegetarian) from their happy hour menu, but the things I got were pretty tasty.
Our experience at Sampan was ok but not worth the price. The crispy shrimp, short rib dumplings and strawberry lemonade were outstanding! The char siu salmon and crab wonton tacos were good. There was a great amount of shrimp in the kimchi fried rice but the dish did not taste like kimchi. The branzino main was flavorless and the sauce was on the plate under the fish, so it didn't soak into the fish and you really had to scrape the plate to get any sauce in your bite. We did not have condiments on our table (which we felt the tuna rice cracker needed) even though other tables had little sriracha and soy sauce bottles. The waitress told us to order the kimchi fried rice with our mains so we did - but our mains came out 10 minutes after the rice and by then it was no longer warm. They require you to swipe your card before your meal, which she explained was because of dine and dashers. That was understandable but I've never been to a restaurant that does this and it sets an awkward tone. Bathrooms were dirty, however, overall ambiance was nice.
The Kim chee fried rice is always a go-to. I usually omit the poached egg and have been able to get it with a scrambled egg instead. It comes with shrimp and it is definitely filling. It's not overwhelming with Kim chee, so that could be a miss for die-hard Kim chee lovers and great for people who aren't entirely sold on Kim chee. The service is amazing! Food is quick, waiters are quick and hospitable. 10/10! The ambiance is gorgeous, dimly lit and just a vibe overall. I love the colors inside that light up on the walls. I enjoy sitting at the bar in front of the kitchen. It's an experience!
We decided to do the tasting menu where you get 7 selections. 1.We started our tasting with the crab wontons which was filled with crab but I was hoping for an Asian inspired sauce with it but it was a bit bland. 2. Cheesesteak bao buns- our second favorite of the night, it was accompanied by a pepper relish that was really good too. 3. General tso's soup dumpling- our absolute favorite. It's an explosion of flavor when you bite into the dumpling. We both loved these. 4. Salmon skewers- my husband loved , I don't love salmon. The sauce underneath was pretty good. I let him pick this course 5. Walnut shrimp - disappointing. We both expected it to be sweet since it mentions honey but it wasn't, it was boring. 6.brussel sprouts- I would have liked them cooked a tiny bit more but they had great flavor. 7. Short rib with noodles- the short rib is sooooo tender, I was so full by this course and only had a bite. Our dinner was finished with min ice cream cone with a sparkler to celebrate our anniversary.
Always a good time when visiting here. The food comes out fast, but is always fresh. The servers are always knowledgeable (especially for how much to order because you never want too much that you can't finish). It was pretty packed this evening, but they were able to accommodate our reservation earlier than planned, which was perfect. We were celebrating a friend's birthday and they gave us the mini cones with cute sparklers! A nice touch. The kimchi fried rice and the Korean bbq satay are always my favorites here. Must have those on every visit. Tried the general tso soup dumplings for the first time and they were delicious! Can't really go wrong with the options the offer here.
Sampan has been around a while and it's easy to see why. We dined early and it was already starting to fill up on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant is dimly lit and intimate without feeling cramped like some city establishments. Service was attentive and professional. The kitchen turns out the food quickly. We tried several plates and all were really tasty. Favorites include the tempura cauliflower, mushroom shumai and the edamame dumplings.
Had a reservation at 5pm on a Saturday night with my husband, no wait for our table. Attentive, professional staff. Darker mood with nice changing colors on the walls. Food was phenomenal! Everything we had was delicious, very tasty. The general tso's soup dumplings were delicious. The pork bao buns were an explosion of flavor! We also shared a Kim Chee fried rice and Korean bbq beef satay. The rice texture was perfect and so flavorful with plenty of shrimp as well. For dessert we had the mini ice cream cones chocolate pecan and vanilla guava!!! I could have eaten 10! Definitely going back, excited to try other dishes!!!
This place is one of the more popular restaurants in the Center City area. It is always busy and crowded here no matter when you visit. I came here for happy hour and had a short wait to sit at the bar. The inside has these great designs which light up during your stay. It seems like a fun trendy place to visit and bring clients over. There is an open kitchen where you can watch the cooks make the food which is great to see. They are constantly making high class meals and bringing them out as fast as possible. The waitress was very friendly and guided me through the happy hour menu. I decided to order the Kimchi Fried Rice, Kobe Sliders, and the Thai Punch. These items are listed as sides on the menu but there is a decent amount of food. I was filled with the Kobe Sliders alone. The sliders were the highlight of the meal. They were delicious and packed with wonderful flavor. I would love to eat these every day if I could. The Thai Punch was delicious and washed down the meal. I had a great time here and would highly recommend it to anyone for a great meal at any time of day.
Food: The Kobe beef was delicious, well balanced and perfectly cooked. The tuna was my favorite though, wonderful texture and flavor, slightly spicy but not too much. The Kim chee rice wasn't very good unfortunately. It lacked depth, umami, complexity and the heat was overpowering. Service: excellent, my waitress was attentive but not excessively. She paced everything perfectly! Ambiance: really cool and chic. It was a little loud but I was dining solo so I put in my headphones and that was perfect. The pricing was fairly reasonable and overall I enjoyed it. I'd visit again :)
We came for happy hour and the food here was amazing! We tried a lot of different things and liked a lot of the items. For small dishes, we got the edamame dumplings and the dan dan dumplings. The presentation of the edamame dumplings was very pretty and we enjoyed this dish. The dan dan dumplings were on the spicy side and were just ok. I would just get the edamame ones and skip the dan dan one next time. We got a lot of the bun and wrap items. Of the items we tried, we really liked the pork bao, pork banh mi, and the kobe sliders. The pork bao was the favorite and I also really liked the pork banh mi. We also tried the kobe hot dog and crispy chicken bao - those were both not very flavorful and I'd skip those items. We also had the korean bbq beef satay. Each order is one skewer. This was very good. For the crispy items, we ordered the kung pao chicken wings but the kitchen missed it and we were so full that we just cancelled them. They look delicious though and I'd want to get them next time. For sides, I got the crispy brussels sprout. They were ok but the flavors just didn't go well together for me and I'd probably skip this next time. For drinks, we tried the ming mule and thai punch. Both were good. We went on a Monday and it was still very busy and a long wait for a table. I recommend making a reservation (if you can) when you want to come out here. Service is great and our server was spot on with recommendations - the items he recommended were good and the items we ordered without his recommendations are the items I'd pass on.
Sampan is one of my favorite Philadelphia restaurants. It opens to a spacious bar area and enough space to wait indoors if it's cold outside. The door staff was kind to us and communicated frequently during our wait time. We started with the Cheesesteak Bao and Chili Crisp Chicken Bao, which were both delicious and flavorful. We followed with the Vietnamese Chicken Satay. I ordered the Beef Short Rib, served over noodles, while my friend ordered kimchi fried rice with chicken. Every dish we ordered was excellent, the vibes support a trendy date night or an upscale group dinner. I will return ASAP to try more menu items. read more

The food was AMAZING 100/10 lol. The service was great! The place was packed but the waitress, Lexi, was quick and soooo friendly! Everything we ordered was recommended by her and we LOVED it all; we left no crumbs lol! The ambiance was nice, dark, music wasn't loud at all. It was a vibe. The bathrooms were nice and clean but there was a line, however they were individual bathrooms so it really gives you the privacy you need which is a PLUS!! My only complaint is that parking is was terrible (duuuhhh it's Philly). Overall, I loved this place and I definitely will go back! read more

BEWARE: This restaurant has no respect for your reservation and will give away your table--even during the grace period--while treating you with rudeness and disregard. I've been a customer of Sam Pan for years, but the staff and management have become shockingly unprofessional and dismissive in recent times. Here's what happened: We made a reservation for 7:15 pm, fully aware of the grace period they mentioned, which extends until 7:30 pm. Driving in from Haddonfield, NJ, during snowy weather, I ensured we would still arrive within the allotted time. At 7:21 pm, I called the restaurant to inform them I was parking across the street and would be there in minutes (as per screenshot). I walked through their doors at 7:28 pm and spoke to the hostess by 7:29 pm, explaining that two of us had arrived, and the third person in our party was parking. She assured me it wasn't a problem since our table was still "finishing up". However, just 10 minutes later, another hostess casually informed us that our table had been given away. She mentioned it would be at least a 30-minute wait--if they could seat us at all--and suggested we sit at the food bar. Frustrated and disappointed, we reluctantly took seats at the food bar but found it unbearable due to the overpowering smell of fried oils and the cluttered, messy cooking stations in front of us. When I pointed out that we had arrived well within the grace period, and asked what time they gave away our table, she dismissively said she wasn't responsible and didn't know the timing. No accountability. No apology. Just a rude brush-off. We left and went to Buddakan, where we received excellent service and the kindness Sam Pan no longer offers. Bottom line: There are far better Asian restaurants in Philly that value their customers. Avoid this place unless you want your evening ruined by disrespect and poor service. read more

We had dinner at Sampan and loved the food! The atmosphere is trendy and modern. They have fun Edison lights and one light fixture looks like a space ship. The wait staff was friendly and checked in many times. We ordered the pick 7 and the food comes out at various times so there was lots of variety. The tuna rice cracker was one of my favorites. Also the wagyu beef was delicious! The shrimp pad Thai was good but too spicy for my taste. The kung pao chicken wings were really good with a little spicy kick. The glazed Chilean seabass was melt in your mouth good. The music was good, edm and modern mainly. The bar was crowded and most dining seats were taken which I would expect for a Friday there because all around it is a great restaurant. I would recommend making a reservation. Will definitely be back again! read more

I actually came here on accident, but it was a nice accident! I tried to go to Graffiti Bar, but I walked through their bar and ended up here. This place is so sexy-looking. The lightly is perfectly dim, restaurant neat, tables nicely spaced out. My server was so friendly and made recommendations. Now I think I got a steak and cheese bao bun, but I no longer see it on their menu unfortunately. My food came out quickly. I loved this place because I love a good deal. Sampan had every day Happy Hour from 4-7 PM with most of the items being $6 or $7. This is perfect for me because I am always going out alone so I do not always want to break the bank for food. I wish I tried some of their sushi because everyone loves the sushi! When I come back to Philly, I'm definitely going back. read more
The most incredible happy hour. The biggest bang for buck I've had in Philly so far. Everything was intensely and wonderfully flavored, creative, and complex. This was the epitome of Asian fusion done well! The cocktails were also inventive and delicious. Service was great and fast. Came here for happy hour! This place was packed on a snowy day... we saw that happy hour was **Walk-In** only and thought it wouldn't be busy on a snowy day but we were wrong! Got here around 5:30pm on a Saturday night and waited 1hr to get seated for happy hour bar area. I disliked how they can't make reservation for happy hour. However, my frustration quickly faded as soon as I tasted the food. We ordered - Crispy brussel sprouts - Kung Pao wings - Edamame Dumplings - 3 drinks Everything was $6 for happy hour instead of $9/$12! What am amazing deal - we sat at the bar area where we can watch the kitchen staff assemble the food right in front of us. This shows that they are very confident in the sanitation of their food. The crispy brussel sprout is amazing - they use fish sauce which brings out a unique taste. The edamame dumpling was so soft it tasted like mashed potato in a thinly wrapped dumpling. And the clear soup - it's so refreshing! The portion for the Kung Pao wings was quite large for the price. I really enjoyed the seasoning and flavor! Every dish was so uniquely flavored I would definitely order again. 3 dishes were enough for the two of us to share if you're not too hungry. Tip: happy hour is all days of the week and ends at 7pm! Absolutely wonderful! Sampan is one of my favorites places to enjoy a happy hour! They have a wonderful selection of items (both food and drink) any time of the day. The staff is wonderful; very pleasant with this team. I enjoy sitting outside, inside, and at the bar area! There are many things that make this establishment wonderful, including the atmosphere, staff, ambiance, and any given day! Some of the photos (attached) are my favorite! I recommend you check it out! Also, when you visit, ask for Doug! As the manager and just overall person, Doug is phenomenal. Doug will make sure you are taken care of in the realm of service, comfort, and enjoyment! read more

I'd give the food 3 stars. This moves to 4 stars because of the great service from the waitress. I had been hearing about how good the happy hour but this food is just average IMO. The beef satay was good. I liked the sliders as well. The broccoli is a waste of money. I would come here for drinks, the ambiance and the atmosphere within the restaurant is beautiful. read more

I love tacos and I love crab wontons. When I heard they have crab wonton tacos, I was drawn in and came just for it. It was probably one of the worst things I've ever tasted and that's the only reason I'm dropping a star. It tasted like an old can of tuna that was sitting outside for a week wrapped in a thin, soaking rice cake. That being said, one of the best things I've ever eaten were Sampan's edamame dumplings. OMG, the filling was truffle, pea shoot and puréed edamame sitting in a pool of sake broth. I am drooling just typing this out. The kimchi fried rice was spot on, the poached egg on top gave such a comforting feel. Nothing crazy about the crispy shrimp, it's a safe dish. I really liked the thinly slices radish they judged to garnish the shrimp. The ambience in this restaurant is really nice, it's dim but there are neon lights on the wall. We got a seat at the kitchen bar, it was so cool to see the chefs preparing the food. The modern take of the asian fusion menu is creative. read more

This fusion restaurant has a good selection of vegetarian options. My toddler loved their lo mein. Vegetarian fried rice and tofu tacos are my favorite. Edamame dumplings, pad Thai was decent. We even tried their Wild flower and house sake, both were great. Sampan is one of my favorite go to restaurant. I am never disappointed. Food has always been consistently good as well as the service. I typically get the chef tasting menu where you get 7 different dishes to try plus the mini cones with their flavors of the day. Whether it's going with 1 person or a group of 4, I always leave out the door full. Pricing wise - it has gone up for sure since my first visit back 2013 but that's the same with everything in the world. Overall, I am ok with the price because I always leave feeling happy. All the dishes were good but favorite dishes of the night was the Korean BBQ beef satay, beef short ribs and kung pao chicken wings. read more
Back in August 2020, Double Knot and Sampan had a joint outdoor dining menu which was a neat way to try dishes from both restaurants. I'm only reviewing the items from Sampan's menu in this review and the other items are reviewed in my Double Knot review. Food and Drink Ordered: * worth trying - [Crab Wonton Taco]: I'm on the fence about recommending it because the flavors aren't anything special but I do like the combination of the crunchy wonton taco shell with the soft crab filling that had small pieces of crunchy pickled shallot mixed throughout. I'm a big texture person so that's a plus in my book. - [General Tso Soup Dumpling]: The flavor was good but mild in comparison to the umami flavors you can find in a Dim Sum Garden soup dumpling. - [Crispy Rock Shrimp*]: Hands down the BEST rock shrimp I've ever had. It tasted so fresh and the addition of the radish gave a pleasant additional texture and tart flavor. Would I go back? : I'm not sure. My overall experience was pretty mediocre but I thought the idea behind some of the dishes were pretty creative. If anything, I would definitely go back just to order the crispy rock shrimp. read more

If you manage to get a seat, 10/10 happy hour. It's almost always packed so you'll need to be patient (or lucky), but it's worth it. The happy hour goes until 7pm so great for those days where you end up working a little later. All of the drinks and food on the happy hour menu are less than $10. If you don't go for happy hour, the food is a little overpriced considering the small portions IMO. I've made my way through most of the happy hour menu at this point and I've never been disappointed. Some of my favorites are the edamame dumplings, singapore noodles, and pork bao. read more

The food was amazing. I had pork dumplings and branzino and yum yum! I also tried many other dishes since my party pretty much tried it all (tapas lol). There were scallops, tuna, steak, etc. we had the cutest little ice cream treats. The espresso martini saved my life bc I was good full. Also I had a Japanese rum drink that was delicious! The ambiance was nice if a bit too crowded and loud. Also the server while he got our orders correct was a bit slow in checking on us; however it was crowded so I figure that was the hold up. Overall Rating: 3.5/5 (rounded up to 4) In general, limited vegetarian options, but the ones that are there are pretty good! Ask your server what the vegetarian options are because the only ones that were actually on the menu were the edamame dumplings, but they have more options than that! We got edamame dumplings (be sure to ask for these vegetarian because I think they may normally come with some meat or fish broth/sauce), tofu tacos (pictured), Tofu fried rice (veggie version of the kimchi fried rice, since kimchi normally has some fish in it), and Veggie Lo Mein (not pictured, we were eating too fast!) If you have 1 or 2 vegetarians in your group, this is probably enough food, but there's really only the 4 options so there's not too much diversity if you want to do family style. The ambiance is pretty nice outside though and there are ice cream cones that come with sparklers which is fun. * Vegetarian / Veggie review * I'm a vegetarian foodie that has a lot of meat eating friends who want to go to fun places that may or may not be veggie-friendly, so I'm here to tell you what to order if you find yourself in the same situation :) Just search "vegetarian" or "veggie"! read more
One of the best happy hours around, if you can snag yourself a seat at the bar, be sure to order some yummy happy hour food--there is lots to choose from. Bao bun, chicken wings, Brussel Sprouts, dumplings, and sliders were amazing. Share a scorpion bowl with a friend (or not!!) and enjoy!! read more

I came here for dinner with my family/boyfriend and we tried the chef's tasting menu. I honestly LOVED it. You get to choose 7 items from their menu to try and they will automatically update the serving sizes to fit your party. We got the Pork Bao Buns, Edamame Dumpling, Wagyu Beef Satay, Crab Wonton Taco, Beef Short Rib Lo Mein, Glazed Chilean Sea Bass and Shrimp Pad Thai. It also came with little ice cream cones at the end - Coffee Vanilla and Banana Chocolate. The chef's tasting menu just felt super special and I loved that we were able to try a bunch of different items. We were worried in the beginning that the portions would be too small, but we all ended up stuffed and had leftovers. My favorites were the chilean sea bass and edamame dumplings but everything was yummy! I also lovedd the ice cream after. It was the perfect finishing touch :) Highly recommend! read more
Came in on a Tuesday evening at 7:30pm and it was packed! So glad we had a reservation because the wait would have been 45 minutes! We went with the chef's tasting menu for $55 per person (7 dish selections and mini cones for desert). Service: John, our *very cute* waiter, was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable about the entire menu. He answered all of our questions and helped make the selection process very easy. Most of the food came out within a reasonable time frame, then there was a 20+ minute lull, after which our last 3 dishes arrived at the same time. Food: everything we ordered was delicious - pictures below. I didn't try the Szechuan chicken though because it was cut into large chunks that looked like tofu, but I assume it tasted good too... We had ample food for 2 people and even had to box some of it to go. Ambience: a bit loud because the place was packed. However, we were still able to have a conversation and I believe this is a great spot for friends and/or dates. Dimly lit, candles on tables, etc. All in all, it was a lovely experience and would love to return. John told us about their happy hour (7 days a week) and I will definitely try that. I visited Sampan in an interview process and was amazed. Sampan had been on my list for quite some time but I was still so surprised by the food. We had a special tasting menu which was preselected before our dinner and every single thing on the menu was delicious. My favorites were the Edamame dumplings, Calamari Salad, Orande Szeehuan Chicken, and of course the ice cream sushi. The service was absolutely amazing. We had a party of about 15 people and everyone who served the table was so attentive to each one of us individually. I am so excited to go back to Sampan and enjoy some more of their lovely food. read more

My friend and I stopped by here on a whim Halloween night after our first choice was surprisingly closed. Our server was Izzy who was super friendly, attentive and helpful. Top notch service, give her a raise. We ordered the specialty cocktail of the night ($5), I forget the contents but it was essentially a spiked lemonade (maybe yuzu was involved). We also didn't realize but happy hour runs here on the weekend 4-7pm which was awesome. The dishes came out within like 3-5 mins I feel like so insanely fast. This could've been because it was a slower night considering Halloween but I'll take it! My kimchi fried rice and chicken bao buns were like $6 each and you get SO much rice that I had to bring maybe 3/4 a cup home. Both were flavorful. I was happy with my dishes. Came here during "sips" their cersion of happy hour. Outdoor seating full but promptly seated inside. The vibe inside felt like what you'd expect of asian fusion - slightly gaudy wall designs but plenty of bar and separate kitchen seating. Service was prompt and helpful. Edamame dumplings (5/5) - without exagerration one of THE BEST dishes I've had in philly. Would come back ans take visitors here just for this dish Crispy Chicken bao (5/5) - Nice fusion between hot chicken sandwich and chinese bao Pork belly bao (4/5) Slider (3/5) - Center a bit too medium rare Kimchi fried rice (3/5) - Not spicy at all, barely any kimchi flavor. Does anyone know if there is meat in their XO sauce? I know most XO sauces are seafood based but some also include cured ham. I'm pescatarian and want to know if I can eat their XO sauce. Thanks!

There's table seating, but the atmosphere, in my opinion, is more of a classy bar. The food is delicious and has a complexity of flavors. Hope that helps
Is happy hour throughout the restaurant from 4-7 PM or just the bar area?
Just he bar - which is quite small. You can also get it at the bar around the kitchen, but make sure you ask the hostess for one of those seats, as they're not first come first served. HH there is great, if you can get a seat!
Do you have thai iced tea?
No, but I did have the lemonade, it was good, I think it was made from scratch
