Every time I come home, I have to get a Sam's Italian. I always get ham and usually I get a whoopie pie too. But when I saw the cream horns, I grabbed one of those. There's really nothing outrageous about the sandwich. It's just ham, cheese, onions, green peppers, tomatoes and pickles. They use oil and salt and pepper too. It's my childhood, and I get one every time I come back home. The bread is super soft and it just rounds out the sandwich. There was one guy taking orders and making the sandwiches. But they were not too busy, so I was helped pretty quickly. I placed my order, took a few pictures for my review, and my sandwich was done. Lots of parking up front. And some picnic tables off to the side. Had a great sandwich, and great experience. read more

They shorted is on meatballs. They put two in one order and one in each of the other two. They did not tell us. They did not give any kind of discount or addition, and they almost did not include the side salads. I used to have fond memories of this place, grabbing Italians with family, and such. I only have one visit to base this opinion on so far, but we stopped here to grab a takeout sandwich, because Shaws down the road had nothing. We opted for a full-size Italian sandwich each. It seemed to take a while, but we were in no particular hurry so that was fine. The onions and other veggies weren't sliced as thin as I like it, but since a favorite place of mine closed down many years ago, I have yet to find a place that slices thin. But the sandwiches were great and we woofed them down while driving home. The amount of sandwich filling was generous and the right amount of oil was used. We ordered takeout online and most of the order was wrong. The penne Alfredo with broccoli was supposed to come with a side salad and garlic bread. What showed up was plain penne with no sauce or broccoli. The salad was missing. The pepperoni cheese bread did not have pepperoni. The wings did not come with the requested dipping sauce. We use to eat here all the time but this will be our last. I understand that most places have staff shortages but would it kill them to clear off the tables??!! The eating area was DIRTY. Not one table was clean, trash overflowing, no napkins in the dispensers. There were 3 employees working. I have had overall good experiences at sam's. Me and my family have been going here since I was little, about 35 years now! I have been going to this store for awhile. I haven't had a bad interaction myself with any of the staff but a few of them stood out to me. There is always a young girl (I am not quite sure of her name) on the cash register who greets me with a smile and a " How are you! " it's very refreshing to walk in and be greeted so nicely, it always brightens up my experience! Jason and Eve are also some people I see quite often when I go in, they are very hard workers. I have always loved Sam's Ham Italians!! The rolls are soft and taste great. They are always friendly and it's a great place to take the kids. Their pizza is pretty good - OOOH!! Sam's is probably one of the best restaurants you'll go to. The food is reliable, but great. You never have to wonder about what you're making because everything is made the same. I will proudly admit, I am what Mainers call "from away". I know 4 different ways to order a sandwich on italian bread. Hoagie. Grinder. Hero. Sub. The staff at Sam's knows NONE. OF. THEM. I ordered a turkey and swiss (sorry sir, we don't have swiss! No swiss?? This is a sandwich shop?), on a hero with lettuce, tomato, onions, and mayo (because Mainers haven't discovered Russian dressing yet). I got a turkey and american with lettuce and tomato on a hamburger roll. Um, what? They remade it, and it was just as bad. This time, on an "italian". Sorry. An Italian is a specific TYPE of sandwich: Ham, salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onions, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, and oregano, on italian bread. What they refer to as an italian is a hero, or sub roll. Period. The staffer I spoke to did not ask for clarification on what I meant by "hero". And that is really the issue here. Communicate, for pete's sake! The remade sandwich, had two half slices of cheese on it. On one half of the sandwich. The majority of the turkey was on the other half. It looked inedible. The sandwich went in the garbage when I got home and saw the horror that was perpetrated on me. I ordered Domino's instead, which should tell you something. The two best places for Italian food in this town are Dominos and Subway. I love Maine. But unless you're ordering seafood, the sandwich options, pizza options, and bagel options stink. Sam's has eight or ten locations in central Maine and is well known by all of the area natives (and us former natives that have been exiled to the south). Sam's Italian Sandwiches are something you can only find in Maine. It is sort of a sub sandwich with ham, cheese, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and their own sandwich oil. There is something about their own freshly baked bread and the combination of ingredients that make these one of a kind. I've not tasted a sandwich quite like it anywhere. It is one of those things you just have to have when visiting Maine. We've tried buying the ingredients and re-creating it at home but, it's just not the same. They also offer pretty good pizzas and excellent meatball subs with melted mozzarella cheese on top. Ummmmm. They have been selling home made whoopie pies since well before Oprah discovered them and made them cool. Service is quick and efficient. The staff is young and friendly. Put Sam's on your list of Maine foods to tray after you finish your lobster rolls and red hot dogs. read more

I had the cranberry almond chicken salad. We were just passing through and happened upon this little gem of a place. My sandwich had generous chunks of chicken, and ample cranberries. It was seasoned well. I also had my first ever whoopie pie. I live in the south so I have heard of them, but never had one. A whoopie pie aparantly consists of two delightfully dense chocolate cakelike pieces with the most angelic fluffy sweet frosting center smashed in the middle. All I can say is "WOW! Sam's has been bringing from Yarmouth, past Pat's, Romeo's and the Amato's in town. IMO their italian is the best one I can find around here. Nice folks behind the counter every time I drop in too. Got a steak sandwich which is expensive to start with. Asked for onions and peppers which cost me a dollar extra (absurd). Without a drink this Subway sized sandwich was just under 13 dollars. Stopped here on April 28. Ordered a veal parmigiana dinner. The veal was so overcooked that the edges were curled, black and so hard I couldn't eat it. The sauce was ok, spaghetti too. These veal patties are precooked when made at the factory, no need to cook the crap out of them. Also ordered a dagwood sandwich for a work lunch. It was so full of mayo and hardly anything else. The bacon was very old and very little of it. One slice of ham as well. Lot of lettuce and tomatoes on a bulky roll. It tasted ok, but there was so much mayo that the bun kept slipping away on me. I love Sam's. Always have, and hopefully always will. The food always tastes the same and it's totally a go-to comfort fix. That being said, it was unfortunate that I was a bit disappointed with this visit to the Freeport location. I visited in the early afternoon today (Friday) and it was very slow, only one table occupied in the dining room. I could see 4 people working. A tall gentleman took my order (he didn't seem super excited about work..) but he was nice. There was a younger woman making the sandwiches I ordered. Now- those of you who know me, know I am in the food industry and am quite a stickler for sanitation practices. That being said, a few things I noticed- first: no hand sinks to wash hands regularly and conveniently. There may have been one in the back.. But not out front. Second: I know hand sanitizer is used but that is known to be an ineffective way of prohibiting bacterial growth on surfaces and food. Third: no gloves were used in the making of the sandwiches. Besides that, in the middle of sandwich making, the young woman went to the register, fussed and touched it a bit, then went back to making sandwiches! YUCK!! The food: it's basic, not extravagant but I've had it ever since I could eat. If I've been away for a long time, traveling or going to school, or moving away, etc, my first meal back after one of Mom's (of course) is Sam's. I get the same every time- ham Italian, cheese, pickles, onions. No salt, pepper or oil. They are known for their "Italians" so most newbies are prompted to get that above anything else. Lots of options available! Overall, this location was good, but may need some fine tuning here and there. read more

Stopped in after work for the first time to get a quick dinner to bring home. I was quoted ten minutes. Arrived, only customer there and waited an additional fifteen on top of the ten minutes it took me to drive there. French fries weren't even fully cooked all the way and were soggy, and I had white (NOT red) tomatoes on my sloppily put together "Italian" sandwich. Disgusting. Will not be back, ever. read more

I was driving by and saw their for $5.39 spaghetti dinner so decided to stop and give them a try. Ended up getting a bucket of spaghetti with meatballs at a reasonable price. We've been going to Sam's for over 20 years. This was the first time we've been so disappointed. The pepperoni pizza was burnt and tasted like cardboard. The italian had almost no meat or veggies. I'm hoping it was a one time thing. I wonder if management needs to make some changes at this location. read more

Only stopped here once on my way through Freeport. Bought a regular size meatball sub and was quite disappointed. A lot of sauce on it and hardly any meatballs (which isn't too bad as they tasted like they were bought frozen and warmed). It's a pretty standard looking house of pizza type place so I'd imagine a deli sandwich or a pizza would be alright.
