We had steamed mussels, and baked stuffed clams to start, Absolutely delish! then I had the Shrimp pasta with wine garlic tomatoes and basil. Oh I ate all but a spoonful, I was so full but it was so good! I never eat that much dining out. Then we shared Tiramisu, which was awesome, and had coffee that was fresh. All of it was Excellent! Drove out to East Hampton to try out Sam's this afternoon. Walked in only to find out that they are only serving takeout - opening this Saturday for dine in. Ordered a shrimp pie and a sausage and pepper pie to go. Made it back to Center Moriches and reheated pies. Finally, a bar style pie on Long Island! Thin and crispy crust! Great sauce and toppings! Very low key with a small bar that's filled even on weeknights. You start to wonder if you really will be impressed, but when your server is raving about the pizza she had their for lunch before her shift, you start to believe you're on the right track! My boyfriend ordered the Big Easy pizza. Always a fan of anything spicy, he is generally disappointed in the lack of heat in "spicy" dishes. When his first bite gave him such an unexpected kick he started coughing, I knew things were going well! I had Mario's pizza, which has sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke, goat cheese and basil, and I added chicken to it. The explosion of those flavors together was incredible, with an even distribution of all ingredients on the pizza. Home run! We're staying only a few blocks from here and will be making this a regular haunt! read more

Once upon a time, there were restaurants all over the East End of Long Island like Sam's. They had shiny wood booths for four all along the wall; a big bar in the middle of the restaurant with the same people there every night; slightly stale rolls in baskets on the table; dowdy waitresses carrying big trays heaping with pizza and spaghetti; and grandparents, parents and kids all chattering away. That kind of restaurant is now on the endangered species list. Somehow, Sam's has survived the transformation of "the Hamptons" and maintained the same decor, food and people for over 60 years. You won't find elegant food here. Nor will you find cool retro atmosphere. It is just an old-fashioned, family-oriented, Italian restaurant. And when you are completely fed up with the over-the-top, trying-too-hard restaurants catering to the summer crowd, Sam's will be the refuge you seek. I usually never leave reviews whether negative or positive however, i have never had a more unprofessional experience or been treated as rudely than I was at Sam's tonight. When I ordered a drink at the bar, the bartender immediately took my ID to study it by the register only returning to me 5 minutes later when I politely asked what the issue was. He mumbled something about my picture being strange and took my ID to the back of the restaurant where I could not see him and did not return for almost 10 minutes. At this point, I again asked the bartender what the problem was and he continued to question my ID while I felt forced to prove my own identity all for a glass of wine. This continued and the bartender threatened to call the police to which I, still as nicely as possible, replied sure again this is my real ID and I have nothing to hide. Finally, after he further questioned me and I repeated that he could call the police if that is what he wanted to do he handed my ID back and told me "i can have the glass of wine" no apology, nothing. He acted as if he was doing me some type of favor. Furthermore, this is a small restaurant so many had noticed what was occurring. Others at the bar made comments to me how ridiculous this situation had become. During our actual meal when I sat back down with some friends, our waitress was very un attentive and the chicken milanese tasted like it was soaked in salt. I thought the bartender or at least someone in the restaurant might eventually come apologize for this entire ordeal ie: wasting 20 mins of my time + literally threatening to take my real ID but never happened so don't go to sam's to avoid this experience or having to write the 5 paragraph essay i just wrote about it read more

I went to this restaurant because I was staying at the Mill House Inn around the corner so it was a short walk from there. I had the mozzarella garlic bread which was good (a big portion too) and the shrimp spaghetti which tasted good but texture wise the sauce was a little runny. I also had a small beer. The bill was $33.67 plus a $5 tip, so a little on the pricey side. read more

We are regulars at Sam's for many years. It is a family style restaurant located right in the center of town. Neither my wife nor I can cook, so Sam's is a nice option. It is a kid friendly restaurant so it gets busy early. To avoid waiting on line , we try to arrive around 6pm.MY wife normally gets the chicken Ceasars salad and I get the thin crushed pizza. Detracters might say that decor is tired and too noisy. I'm not here to eat the curtain soif you want to avoid kids , there is no shortage of overpriced restaurants in East Hampton read more

Like a beacon, Sam's neon sign (one of the only only allowed in EH) shines on Newtown Lane beckoning to those in need of nourishment. At least that's what one might think looking at the hordes of people that flock to Sam's around dinner time. There isn't anything magical about the sign, however, it's all about the pizza. After 10 years, my father finally stopped ordering his pizza with thin crust. That's how it always comes at Sam's. If thick crust or deep dish pizza is what you want, this is definitely not the place for you. The pies come in 3 sizes, the smallest being an individual 9" and there's usually some sort of special during the week. They have an assortment of toppings, as well as a few special pies with preselected assortments of toppings with complement each other beautifully. The salads are awesome, always very fresh and with excellent dressings. I haven't tried the pasta dishes because I love their pizza so much, but from the bites I've stolen from parents' and friends' dishes, they're pretty excellent. Reasonably priced with very large portions. They have a variety of typical Italian desserts, such as cannoli, tiramisu and tartufo. From what I've had, they're great, but not anything different that you'd get from a different Italian restaurant. Awesome low key atmosphere without being a pizzeria. Definitely worth a try if you're in the East Hampton area! Try to go earlier in the summer (I think they open at 5), it'll be easier to get a table. read more

If you are not from the East Coast, but you know someone who is, inevitably you have heard that person complain about the pizza in whatever city or town you live in. As someone who has always lived west of the Mississippi, I know what I'm talking about here. Most of my wife's family are from the East Coast, so they inevitably swear their allegiance to East Coast pizza. There are a few exceptions in their minds, but in general, the best pizza for them is NOT on the left coast. They all swear that Sam's pizza is the best. Period. Naturally, Sam's had my full attention when I crossed its threshold and sat down in the nice old school booth for a pie. That's another thing about East Coasters: It's referred to as a pie. You have to understand the context to be able to tell whether we're talking pepperoni or apple when you are anywhere near the northeast. Long story short, I've been to Sam's a grand total of 3 times. Each time the experience was fun, and the "pie" was very good. The last time we went, we took out a Sam's Special (kitchen sink, no anchovies), a Mario's Mix (veggie with goat cheese I think) and a 5 Cheese pizza. Yup, the pie was very good. Not jumping around on the furniture/dreaming about it for 3 nights/telling perfect strangers about your wonderful pie good, but good nonetheless. The service was a little spacey the last couple of times we were there, but everyone was nice, and we were on vacation so time wasn't necessarily of the essence. They have a full bar, and as I already mentioned a really comfy old school restaurant atmosphere. read more

Anyone with a fortune to spend can fly a chef in from Europe, model the place after a Picasso painting and request that patrons arrive in cars that cost as much as a college education. No one however, can open a restaurant with the charm that Sam's has. It takes years, decades to do that. Sam's is East Hampton's "home." Like Scoop across the street, Sam's is part of the heart of East Hampton. Scratch your name into the side of the wood paneled walls when the waitress isn't looking and join the generations who've sat in that same booth enjoying the best baked ziti on the planet. Ugh. Where do I start? The staff and service is absolutely terribly. While I have had their pizza before (which is OK), the last meal I will ever have there was horrendous. During the last visit, two people in my party ordered the special chicken Alfredo. It came out & was like an oil garlic sauce. We notified our waitress who said "this is how we make it here" instead of offering another dish, or something of the like. I mean, Alfredo is a cream sauce no matter how you make it?! We wanted to replace them with something else. She refused. I asked for a manager, who never showed up, after 20 minutes of waiting. The woman continued to be so rude at the end, that even the 8 year old child with us began to cry. Disgusting. We paid the bill, left all of the food uneaten, and will never, EVER go back. read more

What can I say beside my name is Sam too! Honestly, I ate here for the first time as a transported kid from Baltimore in 1978 who resided in Montauk with some college friends. Well on a night out we headed to East Hampton and I was introduced to Sam's pizza. All I can say, I fell in love with the pizza and their food. Whenever I come back to Long Island and Suffolk county it's a must. The people and ambience make it special and nothing has changed much. Even as this area of the world has become more commercial and glitzy. It stands alone. NY style pizza done just right. And whatever else they make its home made and fresh. A story of love lost. Sam's was my favorite place in East Hampton as a child. They were friendly, the owner was kind to children and although there was always a wait you were made to feel like family. Not so much anymore. I brought my own children on a Wednesday night and the hostess was no where to be seen. We waited for 10 minutes for her to come back (a young pretty but miserable blond) and she arrived annoyed. We asked for a table and she huffed as this was an odd request to want a table at a restaurant. She said 35-40 minutes. I asked if we could have a piece of bread as my young kids were starving. No, she said. I asked if we could just sit at the bar and order something. No, she said snidely. Perhaps kids are not allowed at the bar. I told her I would walk around with them and come back and she was quite nasty about it. So, we left. And, will never go back. read more

No reservations and a 1.5 hour wait. Its very much a family restaurant. It was raining and this place was packed. I was told the wait would be 45 min. I ended up sitting at the bar with a friend while we waited (we had to wait to sit at the bar too) and ordered Riesling. Thankfully, a lot of people were not there when the host called their names, so skip skip skip skip all these names, and next thing it was my turn! We were seated at a booth and ordered Sam's pizza, as well as the soup of the day. The medium pizza is good for 2 people. It was delicious. The prices weren't bad, esp for East Hampton! read more

Solely reviewing bar/ambiance/drinks, as I didn't order any food (although that's a good thing from what I saw, and from my boyfriends subsequent food experience..) Super dumpy of which i'm frankly never a fan - but I anticipated that with the divey ambiance, there could be the potential for great bloodies! Sadly, I was mistaken. Horrible bloody, and honestly the food looked atrocious (as did the carpet, barf). Also SUPER trashy/tatted/jersey clientele at the bar and all families/loud screaming children at the tables...and when my boyfriend ordered food to go a few days later, he deemed it barely edible (the one bite i took caused me to concur). Service was also not too spectacular, despite the bar being fairly empty. A shame, as it seems like it has the potential to be a reasonably priced, low key spot - also, I'd imagined it would stay open late/be a dive bar at night, but they close at 11... Sam's is an unpretentious townie bar and Italian American restaurant in the Fabulous Hamptons. The highly touted lobster roll cost me $19 and was ok. I know there's a place called the Lunch Box on Montauk Highway where the Lob Rolls are even more expensive and too me that just speaks the the ridiculousness of the zip code. I yearn for the days of the incredible lobster rolls at a drive in on Boston Avenue in Bridgeport CT called Marczi's where the lobster meat was dripping with butter and everything was served all warm and toasty. Service was friendly and efficient. The place is small and the bar is right there in front of you in the dining room. If you don't mind eating next to a bar I guess you'll be quite happy with ordinary food at prices quite affordable given the area. read more

Sam's totally saved the day! My mom and I decided to take a drive from Sag Harbor with no where in mind for dinner. After being turned away by fully committed restaurants, Sam's let us take their last table minutes before closing. We were so appreciative and the food was honestly so good, it hit the spot. Our waitress was SO friendly, and told us Sam's is most famous for (other than Andy Cohen dining here weekly), their pizza's and chicken parm. We went with half the 5 cheese and at her recommendation half a Sam's pizza (sausage and veggies), plus a chicken milanese. The pizza was perfectly cooked, crispy and chewy in all the right places. The chicken milanese was thin and crispy with tons of fresh arugula. Will definitely be back to Sams! read more

Every town has to have a few competing pizza places. Everyone argues about which one is the best, given quality, price etc. For some reason people from Utica are pizza elitists, and most other places in New York are pretty bad. So pizza can get talked up pretty easily. This is also true of East Hampton. There are a few places, like Sam's or Nick and Toni's, which offer pretty good pizza but are probably overrated in the long run. And yes, I've met a lot of people from East Hampton (locals, summer dinks like myself, and vacationers) who say that Sam's is the best pizza place in the world. It has a really old school environment inside, to some people it might seem like dive pizza joint with a lot of grease, and to others it probably feels like you're walking into a set from a mob movie. You can get traditional pizza toppings here whenever you want, and they also have an inventive list of their own original pizzas on the menu. In case you were wondering, the pizza at Sam's is good. Is it the best I've ever had? Probably not. But for people in East Hampton it holds a special place in our hearts and it's usually the place we recommend. It is a little dive-ish and the service can be slow/subpar at times, but when you're ordering a pizza you usually aren't in a huge hurry with grandiose expectations, so I think we can all deal with it. There is a full bar if you're thinking beer, which you probably are unless you're thinking Coca-Cola Classic. Despite the somewhat old school atmosphere, it's not dirt cheap. Im not sure if I just got bad dishes or what, but Im guessing not since my gf warned me not to get food here. We had dropped in to get a drink and I decided I had to try it out as it smelled great and, from what I saw, it looked pretty good. The gf said it looked/smelled bad. Since she didnt want to try it, I got take out. I was wrong. I ordered the small caesar, spaghetti and meatballs, and the shrimp pizza. The salad, which was the best, just because its hard to mess up a salad, was mediocre. The dressing was very thick, which is fine, but it only covered a small part since it wouldnt spread, there were lots of wedges which I hate, and it just didnt have anything great about it like some caesars do. The spaghetti was ATROCIOUS. It was literally like I made some at home in about 5 minutes. The sauce was almost non-existent and had no flavor. The meatball was bad, too. This is the worst pasta I have ever ordered. The shrimp pizza was ok just because the shrimps were actually fresh and big, which Id hope since you dont have to go far to get them. For a $$ location, food was delicious - great comfort food. Service was fantastic. Their attitude is no where near the kind I unfortunately experienced in another restaurant down the road.
