I was excited to try out this place because I wanted some Italian food. I ordered chicken parmigiana and got ready to excite my tastebuds. After waiting a ridiculously long time for our dinner to come out I was more than disappointed. The chicken was just ok and some of it seemed a bit burnt. My side of spaghetti was brought out way after I started eating...I had actually thought that maybe I read the menu wrong and it didn't come with pasta. Pizza is definitely the best for the hamptons, not horrible prices if your looking for a cheaper meal, and their pastas and meatballs are very good. Regarding Pizza: I am a foodie, but my husband is a dedicated pizza lover, so we've made the rounds - and Sam's is best from NYC to Montauk. It is a thin crust pizza, which is both the proper size, and with the correct amount of sauce and cheese to ensure the middle of the pie isn't soggy. We've tried several toppings, and find the mushroom pizza to be outstanding with the mushrooms sliced paper thin and reminiscent of the aura of truffles. The environment is extremely casual, with large booths, dark paneling, and a bar in the middle of the room (although the restaurant doesn't feel like a 'bar' and is perfectly suitable for families). The main dining room has good energy; the back dining room feels a bit old and depressing. Although we have ordered salads, which were good, I can't comment on any of their alternative Italian offerings as we view Sam's as a PIZZA joint. It's a great East Hampton option when you either don't have reservations at one of the 'in' joints, or your outfit is more than 15 minutes out-of-style. They also offer take out. read more

Bad bad bad. Came here for dinner on a Friday night and won't be coming back. The food was OK, but our service was horrendous, almost laughably so. We sat down next to a family with expensive watches and clothes on, and clearly this caused the waitress to be more attentive. In a one hour meal, we got one round of drinks and no refills on our water. Our glasses sat empty for over 30 minutes. Our pizza was over cooked, and very crispy. In the meantime, the family next to us were extremely well taken care of, had multiple round of drinks and refills of water. I guess if you want good service at Sam's you need to wear expensive watches... although honestly, there are way better options nearby. read more

Sam's is a local place that has been around for ages. It doesn't have a pretty exterior or fancy decorations, but the food is great without being overly pricey for the Hamptons. Every time I've come, service has been great, especially Graham at the bar. I like spicy food, so my favorite item on the menu is the Big Easy pizza. During the season, its crowded, like every other place in East Hampton. Off season, its a great place to come in for a relaxing meal or a drink at the bar. Street parking can be a challenge, but there are town lots behind the building and across the street. Be AWARE of the parking rules posted, as you WILL get a ticket if you exceed the time limits. This is not a place to watch sports due to lack of TVs, but its not a sports bar. Sam's....ughhhhhh....I have been there no less than ten times and the food had been good every time; however, the service is so, so bad; it's an absolute Zero!!!! If I could give it no stars I would. Rainy days out east mean no beach, no pool, no bbqs, no tennis, no golf, no polo, and all around cabin fever which means you can go shopping in East Hampton and eat or sit around playing drinking games indoors. I try to opt to go shopping and lunching. Sam's is a great stable for salads and pizzas. The wait can be kind of long one weekends and service can be spotty however. read more

We were intrigued by the dated but charming exterior (neon!) of Sam's while across the street @ Dreeson's so we decided to go in for a light lunch. Pleasant surprise. The place has been there since the late forties and looks it. Design wise that is; no feeling of accumulated grunge. Nice looking bar with booths along the opposite wall and a smallish dining room in the rear. We shared a 9" clam pizza (NOT New Haven style as I surmised, but made with tomato sauce and mozzarella) and a mesculun salad. The pie had a thin crust and although I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew of the tomato/cheese/clam combo, (my fault, I should have asked) it was subtly seasoned and beautifully baked. The salad was quite good, the house dressing (on the side) simple but tasty. I asked for oil & vinegar and got good olive oil and red wine vinegar. Along with two pints of artisan draft beer we got out somewhere in the $30s. As much as we enjoyed our fare, I was really impressed by what was going out to the other tables: steaming bowls of soup, spaghetti and meatballs, various pizzas. I would have no trouble ordering anything (and I usually avoid ordering spaghetti as "al dente" is a meaningless phrase in too many places) on the menu. The service was warm, responsive and competent. Although I have seen reviews here that implied a bias against the physically challenged, one of the party at the next booth needed to use a walker, with difficulty, and the staff was helpful and pleasant. Many years ago, I was advised to judge a restaurant's kitchen by it's restrooms. The reasoning being that if the restrooms, which you can see, are dirty, imagine what the kitchen, which is unseen, is like. I'm happy to report that the restroom at Sam's was spotless. read more
