I've given Sam's quite a few attempts but keep leaving disappointed. Their chili is one of my favorites, and I order it pretty frequently for pick-up (I work around the area). This last time around, I ordered a bowl (vs a cup) of chili and the to-go container was about 75% full - pretty measly for an almost $10 bowl of chili. To make it worse, there was a good thick layer of oil at the top of the chili almost as if someone only ladled the very top of the chili. I drained the top layer of oil from the container (mind you, there's still a good amount of oil in the rest of the chili - which I get is normal). Not the first time this has happened to me. See photos. I also wish some of their servers put just a little more effort into greeting their customers. The last time I was there, I walked up to the bar, said hi to the server. No response back from her - just grabbed my credit card. She walked back and handed me the check to sign. Let me start by saying I highly recommend Sams Tavern in Capitol Hill, but avoid the SLU location if possible. The service here is always terrible. Even with that, a group of us decided to make the trek for some food and drinks. We sat down at 7:30 and 18 minutes later no one from the restaurant had come by to ask about drink or food orders. From what I've seen in the past 20 minutes, the bartenders are having a good time catching up behind the bar (they're not servicing anyone) and the waitress, despite being in eyesight of us, has been texting while we're waiting. We waited in line for half an hour just to find out that they took the wrong reservation and actually had 5 tables open. No waiting list system so the tiny lobby was just packed with customers not complying to covid safety 7 ft rule. The music was far too loud to even hear the person next to me talk, the service was incredibly slow, waited 30 mins for waiter to take our order and another 20 for food. The tonic water was flat..ok no big deal...when i asked the bartender if anyone else had commented on the flat tonic water, he told me to lower my voice lol. Whats with all the hate for Sam's? this place is rad. First off, I recently got a puppy so my reviews have shifted towards dog friendly vs not dog friendly places, and Sam's wins for being extremely dog friendly. Not just the great outdoor space, but take a seat at the bar and your pooch can hang out right there with you - yay! I have been to both Sam's locations in town, and I do prefer the SLU location over CapHill. This spot is HUGE, TVs everywhere, a nice wrap around bar and seating from large booth to communal high tops. Weekdays its packed with Amazon HH folks and weekends its perfect games now that football season is in full swing. Sam's always has a good selection of beers on draft, tons of good drink specials and the most insane bloody mary i've ever seen (complete with a mini slider for the perfect brunch hangover cure). The food is good and cheap, endless fries anyone? I mean, I could just sit here all day and eat bottomless fries while drinking the ice cold draft beers On top of being a great place to meet friends to hang out and watch the games the service is great. This place gets BUSY and I have always felt like the server/bartender was super quick, friendly, and really just kickin ass at their jobs. 1 star because I truly really enjoy their burgers and my super picky vegetarian husband likes their veggie burger, there's a good ambience- big screens and particularly the patio in the summer. However, the service has been atrocious the last couple of times. Like downright rude. I'm talking not being acknowledged for the first 20 minutes then getting attitude when asking about what's on tap. We asked for water twice and it never arrived. Waited another 30 minutes...nothing...no one would even look at us. Finally my husband got up and asked another server if we could order food. She basically told him no, not from her as we already have a server. Finally our server checks another 15 minutes later and says "YES?!" That was the final straw. Not sure what we did besides try and be patient and wait but this is next level indifference from the staff. It wasn't even busy either and was around 3:30PM on a Sunday afternoon. I asked for our drinks bill instead of ordering food as it would've taken more wait time and attitude from servers. If we had cash, we would've just left it and gone much sooner. I wasn't playing cause it was my birthday and this experience put me in a bad mood. We ate elsewhere. I really hope management takes these complaints seriously as it seems to be a somewhat common theme. Hire more people or speak to your staff about decent customer service. Too bad! I will gladly give this restaurant 4 stars. We had an amazing server and the food is definitely solid, told by our server that all the sauces and dressings are made in house. Atmosphere was great and they had a great playlist going. The owner James was there and was very friendly and accommodating. Gave us free merch, and was a stand up guy, pretty hilarious too. Honestly we love goin to this place, it's just off WESTLAKE and one of the few fun low key bar type restaurants to go to in the SLU area. For the most part the service is usually great. I wish I knew our servers name because she really did an amazing job and was very attentive (short brunette latina.) The one downside and reason this place didn't get 5 stars is because there was another server (who didn't even serve us, don't even know why she came up to our table) clearly intoxicated with a drink in her hand, she was definitely on the clock, while she had her mask down talking to us, she kept getting to close for comfort in my boyfriends face with her mask off. (Tall blonde didn't catch her name either). We were trying to be polite and we're having a great time up until the point she came up to our table. My other friend dining with us is an ICU nurse and wanted to leave right then and there because he has to deal with covid patients and she casually had her mask off talking to us like she wasn't aware of the current climate of things. I ordered Sam's hazelnut burger with the addition of avocados, which was the only veggie burger in their menu. The burger overall was okay but I felt it was dry, which is generally uncommon for veggie burgers. I think the addition of avocados made it dry so I don't recommend adding those. The fries were really delicious! I didn't taste any hazelnut in the burger at all so I am not sure why is this burger named after that. This place was suggested to me and my coworkers as a nice local place downtown. The Atmosphere is neat when you walk in and it is seat yourself but the menu is super limited. It's mostly different types of burgers and other basics. Our server only brought two menus for our group of 3 and it took about 15 minutes to get waters when there was only 3 tables in the whole place. The chicken strips are average frozen chicken strips so you know what that's like. Order them if that's what you like. Not a salad place. Not a friendly server place. The Bloody Mary was good, though mostly a novelty and low on actual flavor. I had a Southwest Salad with a rotten, slimy spinach base, a bunch of coarsely chopped cabbage, and a small amount of other stuff. I fished out the rotten spinach and ate most of the salad. The server didn't acknowledge the plate of slimy spinach at the edge of the table. When, on her second trip to the table to ask if we wanted more, I pointed it out, she disagreed with the facts. She said it was just wilted. Why is it black and slimy? I asked if she could see it, she said she'd check with the chef. Then, like an awkward elevator moment, she pretended the conversation didn't happen. She brought our check and gave me the same blank stare we'd had all evening. Dive bar... You get your basic bar food here: small variations of burgers or sandwiches. The quality is just fine. There is a selection of beers on tap, and you can get the more common ones here. But it is a small selection. I would not suggest this bar for a place to catch sports games of you're looking for a nice atmosphere; yes there are some t.v. screens, but they're small so good have you sit close to them to watch. Man, I still love this bar, but one of the bartenders weren't that nice. Also, it was ultra loud inside. The interior was very loud and unbearable to talk. I've tested interiors with a pro soundcheck and from my experience I can confidently say it was over 85 dB. People yelling trying to to have a conversation, then loud music... oh boy. At least they could have be playing Guns n Roses, Nirvana or something. It was almost as loud as a band-powered pub, but without nice music. We raised our hands several times and it took like 20 minutes for the lady to come over (not joking or exaggerating). My friend, who isn't an English native speaker pointed to the half-empty glass and while he was trying to remember the right words for that drink (like IPA, hard cider or whatever that was), she cut his phrase in half and said: "I don't know what that means". She could have tried to understand him or at least asked him if he wanted to repeat the same glass. Then she took (literally) thirty minutes to bring the glasses. I understand that sometimes things get busy, but cutting people's phrases in half and taking more than 20 minutes to bring glasses looks like a lot. Came here for happy hour On a Thursday night and it was packed! Almost didn't come because I didn't see the best reviews but it looked lively and so we checked it out anyways. A couple got up from the bar so we found seats pretty quickly after arriving. Happy hour is until 6pm and we order a BLT, grilled cheese, cup of broccoli cheddar soup, and a side of fries (fries not included with happy hour sandwiches/burger) the food came out pretty quick and was very hot (yay) and the bartender was very on top of making sure we had what we needed but without being overly bearing. We had a few drinks and ordered 2 shots of a mid shelf tequila when we realized a booth behind us was open. We closed out and took our shots and the rest of our food to the open booth. (It's a seat yourself place) About 2 min after sitting I accidentally knocked my tequila shot over and it spilled. I took some napkins and cleaned it up and waited for our now new waitress (since we weren't at the bar anymore) to come over so I could get another shot since it spilled. When she finally came over to us I told her what happened and she said she'd go get me another one. Awesome....so I thought.... I thanked her multiple times and she brought a new one. I then asked for a box. When she brought it she also brought a check for the shot she replaced my spilled one with. I was a little shocked. I know spilling it was my fault but it's just good customer service to comp something when it's almost at no cost to them.
