Solid 4 stars! I came here a few years ago, and didn't like the quality of the fish. Mind you, the last time I went, I just came back from Japan so I came in with a snobby mindset. I wanted to give this place another shot and I'm so glad I did! The waitress was nice and recommended the Super Sushi Combo instead of the bento, which is smaller for a buck less. We were surprised not only at the size of the plate, the fish was pretty darn good and fresh! The prices were decent too. I'm glad I gave this place another shot, as we'll definitely be back. We also had the potsticker salad... wasn't really my thing (7/10), but my husband really liked them, so it might just be personal taste. He ordered the bento box with beef teriyaki and a modified Cali roll (they let him add cream cheese.. nice touch). He was impressed with the beef quality and flavor. The portion sizes are generous, so it definitely felt worth the price. Service was friendly and fine overall. Our waitress was nice, and the bathroom was clean. We came in recently and really enjoyed our food. I especially want to highlight the two young men working that night -- they were hustling nonstop, cleaning tables, preparing food quickly, and closing us out in a timely manner. Super hard-working and absolutely deserving of a good tip. On the other hand, the young woman working seemed to be moving in slow motion and wasn't nearly as attentive, which was a noticeable contrast. Sushi rolls are good, huge and plenty. The only downside for me is the lack of cleaning. The salt and pepper shakers are filthy, the walls and panels where one sits are full of dried on food and dirt/grime and the plastic cups need to be replaced (chipped and cracked). I've been a loyal customer at Samurai Sushi for over 10 years and have introduced many friends to this restaurant. Sadly, after my most recent experience, I won't be coming back. I called in a to-go order and when my husband and I arrived, we decided to dine in since we planned to order more food. The restaurant was empty except for one party. I let the girl at the register know immediately, but when we sat down, the waitress came over after several minutes--not to greet us, but to tell me that I "can't do that." Then, from across the counter, the chef raised his voice saying, "This is not a fast-food place. You don't do that here." As someone who's 7 months pregnant, maybe I felt it even more deeply, but I was shocked at how rude and dismissive they were. I even asked if they'd rather me leave to "follow their rules," and the chef basically confirmed it. So I left. No matter how good the sushi might be, if the staff treats customers this way, it's simply not worth it. A restaurant should make people feel welcome, not humiliated. If you're looking for good service and hospitality, I can no longer recommend Samurai Sushi. read more

The food here is consistently good, but the service has become unacceptable and unprofessional. The cashier--specifically the shorter young woman with prominent eyes--should not be handling customer interactions, whether in person or over the phone. Her communication skills are poor, and she repeatedly hangs up when customers try to place phone orders. I used to bring my family here regularly because of the quality of the food. However, due to the ongoing issues with service, I had already resorted to phone orders to avoid the in-person experience. Now that even phone orders are being mishandled, tonight will be my last visit. I can no longer recommend this place to friends or family. Management needs to seriously evaluate their hiring and training standards. If they don't, they risk losing loyal customers like myself--not because of the food, but because of the people representing their business. read more

I thought I had found a hidden gem at first. I love Japanese food and stumbled upon this discovery of a place. Now, I'm a breast chicken kind of guy due to my health and wallah I was able to get an Udon noodle soup with breast chicken for a few visits on the weekends. Yes, I did pay extra but I don't care, money is not the issue. I was humbled by this place for their customer satisfaction demeanor. However, I visited this establishment on a weekday and when I tried ordering my usual for like the 5th time there, they refused to substitute in my breast chicken. When I told them that it is my usual on every past visit, the cook said that they've never heard of or done that before. When I told the waiter to charge me extra, the waiter said nope, the cook is refusing to even consider that option. So being the smart one in the restaurant, I asked if the reason was because they were out of chicken breast? The waiter said no, we definitely have chicken breast. Finally, I told him, "well then tell the cook to cook me up a chicken breast on the side and I'll just dump it in the soup myself". At this time the negotiation reached an agreement, almost as stupid as it sounds I guess. I could've gotten mad over this nonsense but then some people are not that smart. I say to all current patrons, I definitely think the weekends have a friendlier staff. The thin white girl and the two red haired gentleman are awesome. However, the cook on weekdays, well he might not be so bright or just doesn't know how to deal with a tad bit of a change request called substitution buddy!. I opened my food and the chicken was bland and I started to wonder if it was chicken because it did not taste like chicken (no sauce on chicken or on side). What's up: It's been a while since I've had sushi! When trying to figure out where to go grab some rolls, this place was suggested. Done deal! Parking: Located in the Montebello Downtown Plaza, parking is shared with the nearby businesses. When we arrived for dinner, the majority of the spots were taken. The good thing is that there's always people constantly leaving and freeing up spots for parking. Just be patient! Environment: Masks are required. When we arrived, we had a party of 4 and there was a short wait before we were seated. The place seemed popular and they constantly had take out orders being prepared. The staff members were friendly and very accommodating when we told them we had extra people joining our party. They were able to add another table to ours to make room for the rest of our group. What was ordered: - Rainbow Roll (a good variety) - Hot Night Roll (spicy and yummy) - Super Maki Special (it was a nice mix of California Roll, Tuna Roll, and Crunch Roll) - Shrimp Tempura Udon and Spicy Tuna Roll (flavorful broth, noodles were good) - Lemon Flush Roll (tangy and refreshing) - Sun & Kissed Roll (it was ok. slightly spicy) Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. Haven't been here in years. It's nice to dine in once again. Came midday and only waited a fee minutes to be seated. They take every measure for everyone's safety. Your temperature is taken at the door and they have a big bottle of sanitizer at the entrance. Tables amd menus are clean. Staff is wearing masks and face shields and do a great job keeping the tables clean between guests. They have a nice selection and prices are affordable. Their portions are also generous. Now on to the food. We ordered the udon soup which was served very hot and smelled sooooooo good. Flavor is good and noodles are on point. Next up is the teriyaki chicken goza bowl. Portion os very generous. I couldn't finish mine. Chicken was juicy and the teriyaki sauce is good. Vegetables were cold so I didn't eat them. Last but not least was the shrimp and veggie tempura plate. Good portion and hits the spot. The staff is very friendly and all are working to make sure their customers enjoy their dining experience . Get seated at a table wait for 10 minutes just waiting for a server to come take our order. 2 servers working with 4 parties containing no more than 4 people in the party. Environment wasn't busy at all. Ordered food and sushi just tasted off, shrimp tasted weird from shrimp yakisoba. Ordered mixed tempura, server brings it and doesn't even bring sauce that comes with it. Have to ask for plates, sauce plates, and wasabi. This location is definitely not what it used to be, been coming here for years and never had an issue until today. Well guess may have to look for a new location to enjoy. I've been coming to this sushi joint religiously since I first found out about it back in '13. Aside from driving a city over to the heart of Monterey Park, you'll find that there aren't many (keyword: ) GREAT sushi joints in the Montebello area. In the past I have tried both Oji sushi on the corner of Beverly Blvd as well as Sakura Sushi further down Montebello Blvd, yet always find myself coming back to Samurais. The manager Charlie - though quiet - always provides such a great dining experience. Seems like a great guy with a big heart. Also, prior to COVID adjustments, the now assistant lead (congrats!), Stephanie is always a pleasure to talk to. Hard worker, and operations seem to run much smoother since she took over. Came here for the first time in a few months, and I was happy to see how they pivoted in response to the pandemic. While they don't currently do UberEats or Postmates, they do have quite an efficient system going. They even have a couple bundle deals going on too for some of their rolls and plates! I was in & out relatively quickly during a busy Monday night dinner rush. Looking forward to coming back here once the new normal sets in. Highly recommend trying out their sashimi if you get a chance as it's always so fresh and buttery smooth. Also, I'm a big sucker for their spicy garlic soybeans and mochi ice cream dessert. What a pleasant surprise! I had to drop off my grandpa to a church in the area, and it was around 5pm on a Friday. My husband and I spotted this place while driving to the church. We went back and had dinner. It was fabulous! Sushi was fresh and delicious. We also shared a bottle of Nigori. The garlic edamame is what really stole the show!! Fantastic!! The best we have had. I really wish the bar area was open to sit, because we do prefer sitting at the bar. Other than that, it was a near perfect experience. I'd love to try the Karen Katsu fish next time. Ordered the Bento A. - The chicken teriyaki was delivered as ordered, with sauce on the side. They gave a generous portion of it. There was enough to take some home. - Tempura is shrimp and 4 vegetable pcs (THICK carrot, zucchini, kobacha squash and green bean). Pretty good, but the carrot was undercooked cos it was so thick. The tempura sauce wasn't great. I like the kind where it's warm and more sheer clear looking, with ground of daikon radish. This was a darker thinner sauce. - Salad was good. The dressing was so delish, I asked for more. - Rice was good, cooked to al dente, and it was a high quality rice Then I ordered 2 pcs of masago $3.95. Drinking water was filtered, tasty. The bathrooms were super clean and well stocked! 5 stars on that. Cos then you know their kitchen is clean. The service was good. They had alot of servers / cashiers.
